Dear Matt,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Liz was one of the nicest, kindest, good-hearted people I have ever met. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Please know that there are many people thinking about you and your beautiful wife and daughter...what amazing strength, courage and love it takes to share your journey with not only loved ones but also strangers. Your story provides a reminder that we all walk together down this crazy, powerful path called life. Peace be with you,
A Minnesota neighbor

Matt,
I've been following your story and checking your website for the past two weeks. I just read the story in the Sunday StarTribune article too. You are truly doing an amazing job and the amount of support you have from family, friends and strangers across the country is so wonderful. I can't even imagine going through that. Liz will always be watching over you both and she will live on through that beautiful daughter of yours. I have a 14-month-old girl and when she was a little baby, I talked to her all the time, sang songs and cuddled with her. Now we watch Barney and The Teletubbies - I mean, seriously! She's grown into this awesome little toddler who tries to talk to me and I pretend to understand what she's saying. You and Maddy have such a special relationship. It will only get better. Stay strong and thank you again for letting us into your lives.

Hope you have a safe trip home to your little girl. It will be a wonderful reunion. I bet she missed you tremendously!

Matt-
I am also a stranger from Minnesota who read the article in the Star Tribune and I have benn looking at your website for the past hour. I have cried the whole way through, but in each of your posts I read and find such a strength in you that I can only think to describe it as impressive and, somehow, beautiful. It looks and sounds like you are doing an amazing job and you are exactly the perfect man and father to raise Madeline. I am indeed proud as well and wish you luck.

Matt-
I saw your story in the Star Trib this morning and had to try to tell you what an amazing father you are. I just had a baby boy three months ago and can't imagine how this has been for you and your family, but I can see that you are one of the most amazing men to father a child in this world. Your daughter will one day grow up and stand in awe at the strength and character that you have. Tears are in my eyes right now not because of feeling sorry but because I am so proud of how a man could stand up and live live every day as you are. You are an inspiration to me, you and Liz and Madeline will be in my prayers. You are doing a good job. Continue to carry on. You should be proud.

Just read the article in the Star Trib. I went through the same thing many years ago except is was my husband. I had my second child on the day of his funeral. That child is now 28yrs old. It's tough but you do what you have to do. You are a strong person and Maddy is a beautiful and very loved baby. I know you will do a great job raising her.

Thinking of you today as you journey back home to sweet Madeline and the life you are creating for her. This is so unfair and so sad and so wrong. Your words and story are touching lives all across the country (and the world), so please keep sharing it.

Dear Matthew
When I opened the StarTrib this morning I recognized your picture. I though I know him he is a bit heavier, and with a beard but I know this kid! Then I read the headline, and I was washed with feelings, I do admit to a certain elation about seen your pic, and remembering you that was combined with sadness and disbelief as I read the article. I went to the yearbook and found your pics, the homecoming court, the senior picture and of course the peer helpers. I admired your courage and your strength in moving as you have. Then again, it does not surprise me in the brief 3 years I knew you, you always behaved with the same impressive courage. Much love to you and Madeline.

Just read your story in the Trib and it took me right back to 5 years ago, when my sister lost her husband unexpectedly. They had three young kids (one less than a year.) In addition to bringing back all of the horror, it also made me chuckle because, like you, she said something far worse that had probably never been spoken within the walls of the chapel before! I know you're receiving lots of advice and enduring lots of comments from people who don't really know what to say. Listen with your heart instead of your ears and always be willing to share your story. It really heightens the support. Finally, don't think for one instant that you are not able to give your daughter everything she needs. It's true that you cannot give her Liz, but the things she REALLY needs - love, warmth, understanding, nurturing and a parent who is brazenly proud of her...YOU can give her all of that. Oh, yeah and don't worry about the things in the future that you don't know how to do today. You don't need to know how to do them right now. By the time they come around, you'll figure them out just as you've already figured out belly-button cleaning, fingernail clipping and what puts your baby to sleep. You and Madeline will figure it all out together. You'll grow as she grows and you will be able to provide what she needs in a way that works for both of you. Hang in!
