bedroom.

we woke up early

to get together

with our stranger friends

for a playdate

at the coffee shop

in the eagle rock.

these folks are nothing

short of amazing.

they shared stories

and advice

and were never overbearing.

they adopted us as

part of an incredible community,

even though we don’t

quite fit in

(madeline’s a little younger than most of the kids).

we learned a lot

and look forward to

future playdates

with our new friends.

what a relief

to find some other

(cool)

parents in the neighborhood.

after the playdate

we spent some time

with anya,

then raced home for

a videogame playdate with

ben and peter.

madeline gets free.

the a/c installation is complete

and has passed all inspections,

just in time for

the 70 degree temps

we’re enjoying.

got a few packages today.

stranger friend louis from the mn

sent me some books

that helped him

through a similar situation.

stranger friend ashely t. from the nc

(sister of stranger friend laura).

sent me this:

she claims her husband

uses this with their

child, so i suppose

i can as well.

(thanks).

liz

got this in the mail today:

bob and anna

stopped by with

a special delivery from india.

i was reunited with

an old friend,

a friend that should

bring an end to

the bad luck.

(thanks to red jenn for taking care of him for the past 6 months)

john and heather arrived

to see if i was

telling the truth about

that polish restaurant.

ambience.

(they learned that i was).

more delicious pierogies

cooked in bacon grease.

pierogies cooked in bacon...

mmmm….

came home and fell

asleep on the couch,

madeline on my chest.

woke up to find johnny utah

looking at me

through the door.

holy crap.

how long had he been

waiting there?

he claims only a

few minutes…said

he didn’t want to disturb us so

he made a phone call

to andrea instead

of knocking.

(how nice).

wednesday was great.

thursday will be

interesting.

madeline will get some

shots during her dr. visit.

any guesses re: her weight?

(special prize to the person who guesses closest to her actual weight).

The My Brest Friend is awesome I swear! Amazon wouldn’t let me write a long enough note to tell you why I think you will like it…It is very helpful for bottle feeding, too, because you can strap it on and it will support the baby while you feed her. My husband loves it and uses it all the time when he is giving our baby her bottle. You don’t really have to hold it like you do with the Boppy and it doesn’t slide around either. Trust me on this one. Try it out and see what you think.

    I say 8 lbs 11 oz
I did the shots with my first child- I am not sure if your doctor told you this but I found giving her a dose of baby tylenol about an hour *before* the shots worked really well for her comfort. All my other children we refused vaccines or waited like they do in other ‘less western’ countries.

Every baby should have a little Ganesh to clear their obstacles- They seem like little natural little boundary explorers- Before the veil is so firmly in place in her world, she can help share some magik with her poppa.

I also forgot to tell you that yesterday on my way home there was a man on the bus with his baby. The baby was great; quietly playing the whole time. After 20 minutes of the ride and no one saying anything to the dad, another MAN started a conversation with him. Commenting on how good the baby was, etc. I was eavesdropping and didn’t overhear any mention of being or not being a pedophile. However, he may have a similarly-aged baby at home (my eavesdropping’s not that good) so maybe that’s his excuse for feeling comfortable approaching the dad with the baby and not mentioning pedophilia? I thought this tidbit of info might be helpful for your research.

    Love to you both!

Best of luck with your shots tomorrow, it’s going to be worse for you than her! My daughter is 2 weeks older than Miss Madeline and we went through this a couple of weeks ago. Make sure you have some infant Tylenol on hand and ask the Dr. for the dosing sheet, it goes by weight, I believe. I didn’t feel comfortable giving it to her beforehand (but I know lots of folks do), but it came in handy later that day. If she’s more fussy than usual or has any side effects the Tylenol and a long nap will work wonders. I’m guessing 9′3 on the weight!

That motherless daughters book is a really really good one. For you, and someday for Madeline. There is something about the way the rage of loss can sneek up on you at the craziest times that she captures with a lot of empathy and understanding. I’m glad it found it’s way to you. There is a companion book called letters from motherless daughters (or something close to that) that is really good too.

    I’m guessing 8lbs, 13oz….

Couple things to add (found you through StarTrib, fellow MN person blahblah).

Anyway, I highly recommend “The Next Place” by Warren Hanson. I received the book when my mother passed away and it is a beautiful, spiritual but non-religious explanation of “The Next Place.” Warren Hanson is also from MN and not only wrote the book but illustrated it as well.

About the “It’s official, you’re a mom.” Been struggling with infertility for almost 5 years now, every now and then some fucking ass clown baby company will send me something announcing how old my baby is and what my baby is doing now. Where they get that information from I’ll never know. I know it isn’t the same exact situation, just wanted to share my distaste for the faceless marketing people that know how to shit on our parades.

Stormy here in MN today, hope the sun is shining where you are.

So glad you had another good day! I hope Madeline made it through her shots okay! If you didn’t do it this time ask next time what amount of infant tylonol to give her before her shots. We didn’t know to do that the first round of shots but they told us for the second round to give it to her before we left to come in for her appointment and it worked so well! My guess for her weight… not knowing where she was last time…is 7lbs 10oz. Can’t wait to hear how it went and how big she has gotten. Once again… she is so beautiful!

Hello Matt, This is my first post. First, I will say you are doing a wonderful job. I am guessing Madeline will be about 8 lbs 1 oz. By the way I have a 3 1/2 month old. He spent his first nine weeks in the NICU although he was full term. He loves the same gumdrop orange pacifier that Madeline seems to love. I bought a bunch of them. She’s beautiful as always. Plan a day of a little crabby for shots. I normally get them on Fridays and then take the weekend to recoop. They’re normally not bad and feeding RIGHT after really does calm them down. I don’t even bother to leave the doc’s office.
    My guess 9lb 4oz!

Regarding the playdate. I started taking my son to playdates when he was just a month old. I did it for me, not for him of course. The best social connections I made were in those first few months of his life.

I always really enjoyed the dads that would bring their babes to any baby classes, or library times that I attended. I still do. I like different perspectives that dads can give. In your case, you are both the mom and the dad, so you have much more to offer than someone who is sharing the role…
not that you needed to be reminded.

You’re doing an amazing job, Matt.

    Hi Matt,

I came home from vacation last night and read the past 6 days worth of updates as I couldn’t wait to check in. Sounds like you had some really good days and some fucking shitty ones. I find it completely amazing that you get through your days with such determination…..I know Madeline is so incredibly lucky to have you for her father. You have a wonderful circle of friends and family. All I can say is that I hope each day brings you new hope and happiness with your beautiful daughter and that you find your way along this new journey with Liz guiding both of you. I know she’s very proud. On a lighter note, my guess for Madeline’s check up today is 9 lbs 13 oz. Wishing you a wonderful Friday with your daughter and friends.

Matt, two funny things. Last nigh I realized I was checking in, not only on you, but on your fabulous collection of cyber friends. What a group of amazing people! I can never seem to find the right words, but there is always someone where with the exact right note. Loved meeting your dad last night too. I think we all feel like we’re getting to share in your life, and I bet most of us think of you as “our friends Matt and Madeline”.

It is an honor to be part of this moment.

The other thing. This morning I signed on to check on you, and I found myself happy you weren’t here yet. I thought “oh, good, he’s getting some sleep, and getting out…..” good. good. good.

8.4 oz. I think she probably weighs more, but 9.2 is already taken.

    Hi Matt,

Regarding the books louis from the mn sent…I’ll be interested to see what you think of the widowed one. I personally didn’t like it–it was one of my very least favorite grief/widowhood books that I read–and depending on your personal religious beliefs, it may or may not torque you off…or it could comfort you. Who knows? Some of it was decent (maybe even good?) but it was too overtly religious for me…but that’s just me. I’ll email you with some other books that I’ve read, both ones that I found more helpful and ones that weren’t so you have a variety and can make your own choices. I’ve heard that the Motherless Daughters book is quite good–it’s supposed to be a classic tome in the grief field–but I don’t know anyone personally who’s read it.

Glad to hear you had a good day Wednesday, and that Tuesday was a better Tuesday than usual. That’s all you can hope for some days. Hang in there, and you’re doing a great job!

Hi Matt, this is my first time but have been with you two since the article in the paper, and I am in awe of you. You are doing an awesome job and should be very proud!!!! I am so sorry for your loss and keep you all in my prayers daily, Liz is truely with you on this journey and is smiling down on both of you.
I was just with my daughter taking her Little Princess Ava to the Dr. for her shots and it’s not fun for… but the pain is short lived, so that’s good. But they always do the Tylenol thing and it seems to work well.
Had to get in on the weight guess, Little Miss M is growing so, what a lovely little one she is, so precious. My guess is 8 lbs 1 oz.
At night when my husband and I are watching T.V. I tell him well, it’s time to go check on Matt and Madeline, I just love reading about your day and LOVE the pictures :)

You are doing a fantastic job Matt- we are all so proud of you. I have been reading your blog to my husband, he is just amazed by you. By the way, Im totally with you on people going crazy over babies in public…the women all go plumb cooky and fight over eachother to hold a strangers baby.

    Hello Matt,
Just read through, took some time between sharing your tears…

I HAVE to send you a DVD. Will your name and zip code do? (thinking the post office there MUST know you pretty well about now). If not, I can just send you the recommendation…it’s something my boys love, and parentally tolerable kids stuff I think you can also enjoy.

I got your blog link from a local Mommies Network website here in NC. I know lots of TMN sites all over the country are crying with you by now, and loving you and little Madeline.

I’m the female Obama delegate elected from my congressional district, and in Denver I’ll carry Liz’s vote in my heart as I try to change our world for our little ones, okay?

Insight on ‘Hipsters” ignoring you and Madeline – “It’s SO not a big deal that I won’t even notice” could be going through their heads. Alot of the time, oddly, people give you dirty looks when you’ve got a baby with you. Either they are disturbed by even the idea of a cry breaking out, or they think it’s inappropriate to have a baby anywhere (seriously,it’s weird). So, ignoring you is just the right/hep thing to do.
…I’m sure this makes sense to the sort of folks who heard the song “sensitive artist” and thought it was insightful instead of comedy ;)

    Wii 3007 8315 4545 7456

Race ya sometime!? (I’ll warn you, I’m not very good…but I bet my 6 year old could kick your ass)

    7lbs 15oz

    Hi Matt,

I hope there weren’t too many tears during Maddy’s first shots, or at least that Johnny Utah was there to comfort you while your poor little girl got poked and immunized.

I’m guessing Miss M weighs…more than the Ganesh statue, but less than the fucking robot? I so enjoy reading about all the cool (not to mention thoughtful) gifts you and Maddy receive, but it really is nice to read about the people who have extended their time and energy to you as well. That Eagle Rock playgroup sounds fun – are immature adults who’d rather play like children (but who don’t have children of their own) welcome?

  83. Posted 5/29/2008 at 5:49 pm | Permalink

    I’m guessing 7lb 15.5 oz.
The comment from your dad on yesterday’s post was beautifully touching. Although many replied that it brought them to tears, I am so happy that you have many many around you who love, support, and acknowledge you. I am in awe of this entire site and the power it has.

    7 lbs. 12.5 oz.

Best of luck with those immunizations. Caleb was not himself after his 2-month appointment. Tylenol and lots of cuddling (Moby Wrap) were the only things that worked for us. He has his 4-month appt on Monday, I’m not looking forward to more shots! :( Hope all goes well.

9 lbs. 13.2 oz. I have relatives in Pasadena and in the MN. I think of you often and pray for you. Being a single parent is tough. You are handling it so amazingly well. If you are ever in doubt, look at that sweet face, those chubby cheeks, and sparkling eyes and say well done, my little girl is doing awesome! Take care of yourself, I am sure it must be hard in your situation. Peace and sleep.

Matt, I just wanted to let you know that you are very inspiring and you are doing a great job with your daughter. I don’t know what it’s like to lose a spouse but I do know what it is like to lose a mom and based on my experience, she is SO lucky to have a dad that didn’t turn his back on her.

For the Tyenol dosage chart, google Ask Dr Sears tylenol chart. When you go to the website, you don’t have to sign up for the newsletter, just click the link in the right corner. Anyway, the dosage chart is right there. I always give my son his Tylenol about an hour before the shots.

I noticed Madeline uses the same pacifiers as my son. I am not sure if you need extras but you can buy them at gumdroppacifiers.com.

One more reccomendation and then I will leave you alone, if you don’t have the book Baby 411, go grab a copy. It’s been a HUGE help for me!! Take care and keep up what you are doing!!

I also put in A/C after my first summer with Em….wondering if us here in Minnesota will need it all this year!!!

One other thing. People keep telling you how you inspire them in different ways so I thought I should tell you that you’ve inspired me to take more pictures. And not only of my family, which I do all the time, but also to look at life at different angles and sometimes to just notice the small details which actually make up our life anyway.

Ooooooooo…..I just love baby weight guessing games! My guess is 7lb 14oz – that’s what my little dude weighed when he was born.

I hate shot time! I also HIGHLY suggest dosing her up on baby Tylenol before the dr appt. It truly helps minimize any side affects that she might have. I learned the hard way and had to deal with a sick and cranky baby for several days AFTER the shots. Ugh! Good luck – hopefully she’ll be the good laid back baby that she seems to be and handle the shots like a pro.

I’m going with 7 lbs 9 oz. Of course if she was able to eat pierogies, my guess would be much higher. As for the shots – the first time broke my heart – the crying! But, the subsequent ones have been much easier on Magdalene, we bring her favorite blanket, have some toys to distract her, and a bottle ready to go, something about eating right after that comforts her. And finally, going back to leaving diaper bags in the car: Steve thought sending you the tiny diaper bag might make it easier to remember (from his experience of forgetting it). I on the other hand, like to forget both the tiny one and the main one at home, so we have to make a half hour retreat detour and wind up incredibly late for things – Awesome – at least you have it in the car!
