Oh my gosh, that video of Madeline is just too cute. I can remember back when my kids were babies spnding hours trying to illicit those toothless grins (often in vain…they’d start smiling AFTER we put away the camera and video, LOL!). I just love how when they smile at you, their whole entire bodies just seem to light up and smile.
This is where stuff starts to get really fun. The transformation from sleeping/pooping/burping blob to smiley interactive baby is just the absolute best!

I have been reading your blog for the past week. 18 months ago, I lost my beloved husband and soul mate to his suicide. Luckly, I knew why and understood> we hadn’t been dating very long when he told me that he was going to choose the way he was going to die (his father suffer for years) and not be like his dad. My pleas for his delay became smaller as I watched him go from an avid hiker in our beautiful trails to one who could barely walk across the room. Like you, I said “this fucking sucks” many times a day. My mother hated me saying that…now I can say, when my mother was diagnosed with cancer for the 3rd time…what did she say, you got it, “this fucking sucks”

Also, I wanted to compliment you on your very cool photography. I have been a pro-photographer for 20+ years. I love it when people let their creativity run wild when photographing everyday life. Just makes it more real. Love your style. You should serioiusly consider making hardbound books with your shots. Great family heirlooms, and they look pretty awesome. Lots of places online to choose from. I have several favorites. I can share those sites with you if you decide that’s a good route for you. Oh, and all these sites have software that makes creating books REALLY fast and easy…something that comes in handy with a wee one.

It’s funny that we both ended up in MN at the same time… but unless you spend much time at the U or the Ronald McDonald House we probably won’t run into eachother… Of course, if I did see you anywhere you could fully expect a complete stranger to rush up to you for a hug like we were old friends!
I remember someone was commenting (probably several someones) that Maddy has so many onesies… the good news is that after she outgrows them… they would make a GREAT quilt. All those personalized Ts tell a story about how much she is loved by everyone!
Taking the kids to the MOA today and introducing them to the NASCAR Simulators (I loved them when I was here last year durring transplant). And then we might head to Como Zoo, depending on how much time is left in the day.

This post finally brought me out of lurkdom because it first made me smile and then made me laugh out loud.
I smiled to see the Madeline vid and to finally get to hear in your voice the joy that she brings you every day – we always knew it was there from your writing but it’s heartening to hear.
I laughed at loud at your diversion for those who don’t like to read the effenheimer (sp?). I guess we all need baby animals sometimes to take us back to the basics.
I hope you continue to have a good visit in “the mn.” Enjoy the fantastic weather while we have it and the sleep when you can get it, and keep sampling the local fare. I’m glad you had a good day – in answer to your question, why do they stop smiling when the camera is around? Simple – she’s smiling at you! The camera to them is a simply another object that blocks your face from them. I finally had to make it a game for my daughter – basically playing peek-a-boo with the camera hoping I get a lucky shot.
Love the video Matt. Have to share w/ you my favorite sentence, which uses the word FUCK in several different grammatical ways. When you think of it it’s a very versatile word. One of my favorites. Here’s the sentence:

I love the word fuck. It is so functional. It can be used as a verb, noun AND adjective. Plus its fun to fuck with finger waggers.

My husband and I just moved to the MN from the Detroit. We’re househunting and today our agent showed us several homes. Something caught my eye – There was a photo of Liz from her memorial service on the mantle over the fireplace in one of the homes we looked at. It made me sad, and I thought of you. I am not sure you even want to read about this. Anyway, maybe you will be comforted knowing that so many people still think about Liz every day. You, Madeline, and Liz have made an impact on my life. @Cari Dugan: I’m ashamed to say, I started the whole brawl by calling the newly arrived potential posters from Glamour “bitches”. I may have even threatened the poor unsuspecting ladies — I don’t recall the specifics of my territorial frenzy. Needless to say, things deteriorated rapidly from there, and Matt ultimately had to step in and break it up! It was all very ugly and given the opportunity, I would most certainly START THE WHOLE THING UP AGAIN!

And of course I have to comment on the favorite topic of yesterday. Personally I am an avid user of the work “fuck”. I love it!! It can be used in so many ways and as far as I am concerned it is always appropriate! But on a serious note the thing that I find so funny is the importance that certain people (yes Jill, I mean you) are giving to the swearing. I mean seriously, after everything that has happened you come here every day and lay out for all of us your raw emotions. And all these stranger/friends/lurkers come here to support you. Honestly, I never knew in this day and age that there were so many good people still out there. Yet, you and Madeline seem to have drawn us all in. You inspire all of us to be better people and to remember the importance of our loved ones. So really, the swearing – not such a big deal. It is part of who you are and what you are feeling. You fucking rock as far as I’m concerned!!
I was hoping to be able to come and meet you and Madeline tomorrow, but am not sure if I am going to be able to. So if I can’t I hope you have a super 1st Father’s Day. I love my father dearly – but this year I think you are Father of the Year in my book.

Hi Matt – just wanted to drop a quick note to say hi and everything is terrific at Grandpa Tom Logelin & Grandma Bev’s. What a sweet little dolly she is, you couldn’t ask for a better baby. She loves everyone and let’s anyone hold her without crying and she is so content to just look up at you and smile. She is so much like her mother already at only 3 months old.
I guarntee this girl is going places in life.

Your Twinkies kicked my Brewers’ asses on Friday night. I thought, “well ok, just this once for Liz, Matt and Madeline.” It was actually really great though. So many MN folks came down to the Mil to see them play. As we were going to get more cheese fries in baseball helmets (wait for it… yes, that’s what I said. ah… Milwaukee) we couldn’t tell who scored because the cheers for the Twins were as loud as the cheers for the Brewers. They whipped us soundly and sent us home.
Have a great Get-Together tomorrow. The Minnesota State Fair won’t have anything on this event. I’ll be thinking about you and little Madeline and the “internet broads”.

I do know Liz was an amazing spirit. I got to see it first hand at your wedding (when I met the two of you) and heard it from Candee and Tom. I only wish I got to hang out with the two of you more.
I just wanted to re-introduce myself and tell you that I am so very proud and inspired and in awe of you and Madeline. There isn’t a day that goes by since this happened that I don’t think of you, Liz and Madeline. I think this blog is such an amazing connector and such an amazing way to honor Liz. And, on this Father’s Day, I just want to say thank you … for your stories, for your blog, for your perservance, for your strength and courage, for Madeline and for your realness. I just wanted to send a Happy Father’s Day wish to you (even though I am a day late). I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now and I can’t wait to check each morning to see how you are doing and the latest pictures of your beautiful Madeline. I am so sorry about your loss and I think you are doing an amazing job being a new father. I wish you continued strenth to make it through the days ahead. I have a little girl who will be 8 months old on Wednesday and I know things are not easy and I can’t imagine doing it on my own. Your strength has been an inspiration to so many around the world and your Madeline is blessed to have such an amazing Dad.

The way I used to make my little newborn nieces smile is by gently blowing towards their face. The breeze makes them giggle.
I have a friend who says you have to save curse words so that when you need one they have all the impact they can bring. I think saying this fucking sucks bring that kind of an impact. Mostly though, I think you can be more creative, come up with a more descriptive word. Of course, when you have a baby in the house, you lose the ability to think and just have to use what ever words come to you.
You are an amazing dad. Bless you for taking on the job so you can enjoy the benefits.
