friday.

woke up at 7:30,

moved slowly

around the house.

think i got too much

sleep last night.

knew that i had a dr.

appointment today,

didn’t know what time.

after 10 minutes and

some investigation

i learned that i had

to be there at 8:00am.

shit.

this should be fun.

have to get madeline changed

(diaper and clothes)

and will have to feed

her at the dr’s office.

oh.

and i still have to drive

over to the burbank

in morning traffic.

what would have

seemed impossible to me

just two months ago,

was just the opposite.

made it there two minutes

early and was able

to feed madeline

before my name was called.

i’m super awesome.

the nurses marveled at

my beautiful baby.

i smiled.

dr. checked out my leg,

everything looks good.

said goodbye to ladies

and headed home.

got a text message from

liz’s

friend, ivette.

she wanted to stop by to

see madeline.

we’ve got nothing to do,

and a visitor is always

welcome.

she arrived and held

madeline for most of the

early afternoon.

i, of course, took photos.

madeline.
madeline.
passed out on ivette.

later ivette left and

liz’s

friend diane arrived so

we could go to

the dodgers game.

(madeline better like baseball as much as her mom did).

we took off for the stadium

and picked up our

tickets at will-call.

liz’s

friend stacey c.

used some of her seemingly

endless connections to hook

us up with the tickets.

(thank you, thank you, thank you).

posed for some

photos outside the stadium,

outside dodger stadium.
outside dodger stadium.
me, madeline, cop car.
yawning.

(just look at madeline in her dodgers outfit…)

diane taking the photos,

loaded down with my

camera bag and baby equipment.

hilarious to me,

but i got some

curious looks from those

walking past.

walked into the stadium

for the first time

in awhile.

haven’t been here since last year

when i saw a game with

liz.

she loved this place.

we had season tickets

here for four years.

and this wasn’t my

choice alone.

liz

insisted on season tickets.

i’m not usually the

rational one

(especially in matters of pissing away money)

so when i, a huge fan

of the game,

had to tell my wife

that it wasn’t a

good idea to buy season

tickets the same

year we bought a house,

i had to question

my sanity.

and i think she was mad

at me for a few days

(not robot mad, but just sort of mad).

as she hung out in the

hospital on bed rest,

right before madeline arrived,

liz

religiously watched spring

training games.

dodgers, twins were her preference,

but she’d watch any team play.

she asked me

to go get her a scorecard

so she could score the games.

(i don’t even remember how to score games, but liz could do it well and fucking loved it).

it would have made her

time in the hospital

less not-awesome.

i never got a chance

to pick up those

scorecards.

and as she watched

those spring training games,

liz

insisted that we

get season tickets

for the 2008 season,

so we could ensure that madeline

would become a life-long baseball fan.

and once again

i had to tell her

that it wasn’t a

wise idea to get season

tickets this year ’cause

there’s no way we’d be

able to fully utilize

them with a new baby

in our house.

she just rolled her

eyes at me.

liz

would be so happy that

madeline has been to

two games already,

and even happier that

she’ll be going to her third

game, her third stadium

on july 4th

up in the sf.

we found our seats

seats.

and sat down.

madeline instantly

spit up on me.

spitting up all over my hand.

i think she really spit up

because they

were announcing the angels lineup

(take that, diane!)

we had a ton of fun

watching the los angeles dodgers of los angeles

watching the game.

smiling at daddy's camera.

kick the crap

out of the los angeles angels of anaheim

(such a stupid, stupid name…take that, diane!)

we ate all the stadium classics

garlic fries.
dodger dog.

and took in a beautiful night.

lights.
dirty.
empty.
diane (boo angels) and madeline.

with a dodgers win.

(and an angel’s loss).

lights.

(take that, diane!).

after the game,

madeline got a bottle

bottle.
late night bottle.

and a diaper change

in-seat diaper change.
in-seat diaper change.

as we waited for the

crowd and the traffic

to dissipate

(no diaper-changing thing in the men’s room near my section, so no photos of the troughs at dodger stadium).

empty.

we finally got kicked

out of the stadium

and wandered to the car.

trees.
lights.

made it home quickly,

sent the angels fan

on her way

and fell asleep

on the couch,

madeline

on my chest.

a great day.

tomorrow will be

even better.

It is a MUCH bigger game down there than it is up here (hello, we have ONE team lol), but I’ve always wanted to go to a REAL game in a REAL stadium. If we had more time, I’d take in a SD Padres game, a they have a NUT FREE section in their stadium (with EMT on staff!!). AWESOME for my nut allergy kid !!!

As much as I dislike the Dodgers, I cannot deny that Dodger Stadium is a great place to watch baseball. As much as it lacks in modern technology, it makes up for with a sense of history you get when you walk in knowing that it has been virtually unchenged for 46 years.

I went to the Nationals Game last Wednesday and aside from nice new look and an amazing view of the Capital, there is nothing too special about it. There is no better hot dog then a Dodger Dog either.

If you make it down to the SD, you MUST go to PETCO. I have not been to a better park than that (aside from Yankee Stadium, of course).

Cool!!! I’m so glad you both enjoyed watching all the exciting touchdown eagles, and that Maddy didn’t get too upset at the double faults. It’s so great that your team scored more goals than the other one. I’m sure that made the second half of the bout hard for your friend Diane, but it’s pretty clear she’s a good sport on and off the court.

(Not about to let a near-complete aversion to pro sports stop me from sending you good wishes on a day they brought you so much happiness! ;-) )

PS: It’s pretty fucking satisfying to get some of this parenting stuff down, isn’t it? Time got away from me and all in the sudden I had 17 minutes to get 4 kids downtown for one’s swim lesson. I had to put one in her carseat, wake the baby from his nap -throw him in his carseat and go! I realized half way down there I had no change of clothes for the swimmer, (nor shoes, not that they were needed but meant now I had to carry her)
we had to park far far away (of course) and then carry the carseat and the 3 year old. All that and they weren’t ready!! But @ least we did it!! There will be many more of these moments for us all!! :)

There’s plenty to go around in these parts, and we stranger-friends are well aware that if Liz’s story has affected us so deeply, it’s unlikely we can even begin to imagine the impact on those who actually knew her.

Your post made me cry…until I started thinking about all the girlfriend times you’ll have with Madeline in the years to come, telling her about her mom and all the great memories you have, and being there for her.
