friday.

woke up at 7:30,

moved slowly

around the house.

think i got too much

sleep last night.

knew that i had a dr.

appointment today,

didn’t know what time.

after 10 minutes and

some investigation

i learned that i had

to be there at 8:00am.

shit.

this should be fun.

have to get madeline changed

(diaper and clothes)

and will have to feed

her at the dr’s office.

oh.

and i still have to drive

over to the burbank

in morning traffic.

what would have

seemed impossible to me

just two months ago,

was just the opposite.

made it there two minutes

early and was able

to feed madeline

before my name was called.

i’m super awesome.

the nurses marveled at

my beautiful baby.

i smiled.

dr. checked out my leg,

everything looks good.

said goodbye to ladies

and headed home.

got a text message from

liz’s

friend, ivette.

she wanted to stop by to

see madeline.

we’ve got nothing to do,

and a visitor is always

welcome.

she arrived and held

madeline for most of the

early afternoon.

i, of course, took photos.

madeline.
madeline.
passed out on ivette.

later ivette left and

liz’s

friend diane arrived so

we could go to

the dodgers game.

(madeline better like baseball as much as her mom did).

we took off for the stadium

and picked up our

tickets at will-call.

liz’s

friend stacey c.

used some of her seemingly

endless connections to hook

us up with the tickets.

(thank you, thank you, thank you).

posed for some

photos outside the stadium,

outside dodger stadium.
outside dodger stadium.
me, madeline, cop car.
yawning.

(just look at madeline in her dodgers outfit…)

diane taking the photos,

loaded down with my

camera bag and baby equipment.

hilarious to me,

but i got some

curious looks from those

walking past.

walked into the stadium

for the first time

in awhile.

haven’t been here since last year

when i saw a game with

liz.

she loved this place.

we had season tickets

here for four years.

and this wasn’t my

choice alone.

liz

insisted on season tickets.

i’m not usually the

rational one

(especially in matters of pissing away money)

so when i, a huge fan

of the game,

had to tell my wife

that it wasn’t a

good idea to buy season

tickets the same

year we bought a house,

i had to question

my sanity.

and i think she was mad

at me for a few days

(not robot mad, but just sort of mad).

as she hung out in the

hospital on bed rest,

right before madeline arrived,

liz

religiously watched spring

training games.

dodgers, twins were her preference,

but she’d watch any team play.

she asked me

to go get her a scorecard

so she could score the games.

(i don’t even remember how to score games, but liz could do it well and fucking loved it).

it would have made her

time in the hospital

less not-awesome.

i never got a chance

to pick up those

scorecards.

and as she watched

those spring training games,

liz

insisted that we

get season tickets

for the 2008 season,

so we could ensure that madeline

would become a life-long baseball fan.

and once again

i had to tell her

that it wasn’t a

wise idea to get season

tickets this year ’cause

there’s no way we’d be

able to fully utilize

them with a new baby

in our house.

she just rolled her

eyes at me.

liz

would be so happy that

madeline has been to

two games already,

and even happier that

she’ll be going to her third

game, her third stadium

on july 4th

up in the sf.

we found our seats

seats.

and sat down.

madeline instantly

spit up on me.

spitting up all over my hand.

i think she really spit up

because they

were announcing the angels lineup

(take that, diane!)

we had a ton of fun

watching the los angeles dodgers of los angeles

watching the game.

smiling at daddy's camera.

kick the crap

out of the los angeles angels of anaheim

(such a stupid, stupid name…take that, diane!)

we ate all the stadium classics

garlic fries.
dodger dog.

and took in a beautiful night.

lights.
dirty.
empty.
diane (boo angels) and madeline.

with a dodgers win.

(and an angel’s loss).

lights.

(take that, diane!).

after the game,

madeline got a bottle

bottle.
late night bottle.

and a diaper change

in-seat diaper change.
in-seat diaper change.

as we waited for the

crowd and the traffic

to dissipate

(no diaper-changing thing in the men’s room near my section, so no photos of the troughs at dodger stadium).

empty.

we finally got kicked

out of the stadium

and wandered to the car.

trees.
lights.

made it home quickly,

sent the angels fan

on her way

and fell asleep

on the couch,

madeline

on my chest.

a great day.

tomorrow will be

even better.

Your little girl is so lucky to have a cool dad!
Matt, you are looking really good in your pictures these days. You are getting your healthy glow back! Little girls that wrap daddy around their tiny fingers have a way of doing that to you. Just wait…it gets worse and they get older.
It is great to read a fun post and it sounds like your sat. may have been a good day for you too.
I am still thinking about you two….and Liz always.

Oh, yeah…you’re super awesome alright. :-)

Can’t wait to hear about Saturday. As always, thanks for sharing with us all out here in internet-land. Still sending hugs from the GA.

Ok that looked like WAY too much fun. Do you know how embarassed I am to say that I’ve NEVER been to a pro ball game??? Jody went when we visited some friends in Cleveland in 2004, but I didn’t go… I was watching all the kids instead! It is a MUCH bigger game down there than it is up here (hello, we have ONE team lol), but I’ve always wanted to go to a REAL game in a REAL stadium. If we had more time, I’d take in a SD Padres game, a they have a NUT FREE section in their stadium (with EMT on staff!!). AWESOME for my nut allergy kid !!!

Madeline has been to more pro ball games than ME! lol GO MADDY !!! Looks like a FUN day, and AWESOME pictures yet again :) I aspire to be a talented a you someday lol

Yet another example of just how cool Liz was — season tix for the Dodgers! I’m glad you’re passing on that legacy to Madeline…..complete with the oh-so cute pink outfit! I’m sure Liz would have loved it.

And now I’m jealous as hell that you’ll be at the Giant’s game (my home team) on the 4th! Have a fabulous time and make sure to bundle up (it gets quite cold at night.)

I’m glad to see you and Maddy with smiles on your faces.

I love the little girl baseball outfit! Both of my son’s had one. It was the white ones with the blue pin stripping. *LOVED* them. My husband insisted on my daughter wearing pretty dresses and foo foo clothes! She so would have had one if would have let me! ; ) I couldn’t find any in pink.

Okay, I am seriously pissed off. A baseball stadium and NO fucking picture of the men’s room?! If there isn’t one from the SF stadium, I just may drop this blog completely. THAT will send a message.

Oh, and have I been spelling “Maddy” wrong all this time…? I think I’ve mostly been writing it “Maddie,” but now am sensing that it should be “Maddy” with a y.

Fuck. Now I’m even more pissed off. I of all people should know this, with the unconventional Katy with a y spelling that my parents saddled me with.

Dammit…can’t win today. I’m goin’ back to bed and starting over tomorrow.

You know, a couple of weeks back, there was talk of ‘odd’ crushes amongst your blog readers.

Can I fess up to having a girl crush on Liz? I’m in love with any woman willing (and able) to score a ball game and hook a big ass fish with a smile on her face. She really must have been easy to love; those of us who read your blog (and never met her) are half in love with her already.

    Hi Matt,

Just de-lurking for a moment as I feel it’s wrong to not announce myself at least once. I was told about you by a friend of mine who also lurks. While we are incredibly saddened at your situation, you really are pretty darn awesome. You’ve obviously got the hang of the parenting thing and Madeline’s apparent demeanor is proof of that. She looks like a total doll.

Also, being from the MN I’m firstly a Twins fan, but the Dodgers have been my chosen NL team for quite a while. Fun to see you enjoying both recently. (p.s. I was at the Twins game you attended and was relieved that my date that night, a former co-worker, didn’t show up in your men’s room pic).

Best wishes to you and to Madeline.

I found out about your story on Saturday, March 29… the day after I returned home from Arizona, where I was taking in Chicago Cubs spring training. I recall feeling so guilty, reading Liz’s obit while I did vacation laundry, and thinking how awful it was that I was boppin’ around Arizona, without a care in the world, while this beautiful young family was being torn asunder. I searched you up on the Interwebs, and the rest, as they say, is history.

And now, little Miss Maddy, who has already seen more of MN than me, will be closing in on more ballparks than me as well. I’m a little jealous. Perhaps she’d be willing to team up with me on a little baseball park roadtrip. I’ll pay for gas.

    Hi Matt ~

This is my first comment here, but I felt compelled based on the subject of this post. Go Dodgers! I am a Dodgers girl through and through (Father, Grandfather, Husband and FIL all from LA). I hope Dodger Dogs were enjoyed by all.

Anyway, I found you a few weeks ago and read through your entire blog (freaky? Perhaps, but I couldn’t stop myself). I was both glad and upset I found you blog (glad because you are amazing, upset because I’m 6 months pregnant and extremely emotional). But, I just wanted to thank you for sharing everything that you have shared. And I think you and Madeline are amazing. Such a great post…getting to the dr early? Unheard of with a new baby…mom of 3-never happened, don’t care who had the appointment. Madeline sure looks cute in her Dodgers outfit. Keep taking her to those games, and, just for fun, relearn how to keep score…it is a great skill to teach Madeline…she will thank you later when she is so knowledgeable. It does my heart good to read your blog and see the healing that has been taking place in your heart. Good days are coming Matt, for you and Madeline. God bless you both, from one of your stranger/friends!

As much as I dislike the Dodgers, I cannot deny that Dodger Stadium is a great place to watch baseball. As much as it lacks in modern technology, it makes up for with a sense of history you get when you walk in knowing that it has been virtually unchenged for 46 years.

I went to the Nationals Game last Wednesday and aside from nice new look and an amazing view of the Capital, there is nothing too special about it. There is no better hot dog then a Dodger Dog either.

If you make it down to the SD, you MUST go to PETCO. I have not been to a better park than that (aside from Yankee Stadium, of course).

Cool!!! I’m so glad you both enjoyed watching all the exciting touchdown eagles, and that Maddy didn’t get too upset at the double faults. It’s so great that your team scored more goals than the other one. I’m sure that made the second half of the bout hard for your friend Diane, but it’s pretty clear she’s a good sport on and off the court.

(Not about to let a near-complete aversion to pro sports stop me from sending you good wishes on a day they brought you so much happiness! ;-) )

PS: It’s pretty fucking satisfying to get some of this parenting stuff down, isn’t it? Beyond life with an infant being infinitely easier once you feel adept and comfortable, it also makes just about everything else seem like a piece of cake! So yeah, no doubt about it — you put the “awe” in awesome, Matt. Good on you!

Today’s post was simultaneously silly and poignant. I really love that.

Also, I was weirdly disappointed about not seeing the troughs of the Dodger stadium mens’ rooms. Where else do I get to see men’s rooms?

Also, is everywhere troughs? Or just stadiums?

Man….you rock for getting to the Dr.s with time to spare!!! I hate those frantic moments when we fly from point A to B. Afterwards it is nice to come home, put your feet up and pat yourself on the back, thankful for successful completion. Phew!! I did the same thing today. Time got away from me and all in the sudden I had 17 minutes to get 4 kids downtown for one’s swim lesson. I had to put one in her carseat, wake the baby from his nap -throw him in his carseat and go! I realized half way down there I had no change of clothes for the swimmer, (nor shoes, not that they were needed but meant now I had to carry her)
we had to park far far away (of course) and then carry the carseat and the 3 year old. All that and they weren’t ready!! But @ least we did it!! There will be many more of these moments for us all!! :)

@Catherine, your comment made me cry. I actually think about Liz’s girlfriends a lot. Judging from Matt’s posts and pictures, Liz had some really close female friends. My best girlfriend is closer than a sister, and I imagine Liz was like that to many. I’m so sorry you lost your friend. Please know that when all of us stranger friends (can’t figure out the strike-through) leave comments for Matt, we’re also hoping that our words and prayers help others who were affected by Liz’s death.

I’m so sorry you’re in so much pain, and hope you have a strong support system to help you through this terrible time. If you don’t — and even if you do — I hope to “see” you here often. There’s plenty to go around in these parts, and we stranger-friends are well aware that if Liz’s story has affected us so deeply, it’s unlikely we can even begin to imagine the impact on those who actually knew her.

Your post made me cry…until I started thinking about all the girlfriend times you’ll have with Madeline in the years to come, telling her about her mom and all the great memories you have, and being there for her. So I decided instead to consider you both lucky, in that you’ll have that. I hope that’s okay with you, and that those and other thoughts provide some small comfort.

@K8 in the N: Your post reminds me a lovely family trip we had to Colorado one year. My mom is just fine flying, so long as she has valium and a couple drinks. So there we are in the Denver airport, three kids and mom (dad was getting the rental car), and mom starts trying to get our luggage, except she’s, how did you put it, “tranq’d up to her ying-yang” so she’s not recognizing any of our luggage and instead picking all sorts of random pieces. Matt, I’m really glad you’re letting others take photos of you and Maddy together at various outings. It’s important that she has photos of the two of you while you’re out on your many adventures. I know how easy it is to fall into a routine where you’re the main photographer and then you end up with pix of everyone else with none of yourself in them. I was a single parent to my daughter for many years until I got married three years ago and too few of my photos from back then have me in them, just a billion of my daughter alone or with family and friends.

I just had to comment on the stupidity of the Angels new name. They SHOULD lose for trying to be in two places at once – and for their stadium looking like Disneyland (and I like Disneyland). A baseball stadium is not a theme park.
