monday - 18-week birthday.

got up early.

celebrated madeline’s

18/52-week birthday

with a bottle of warm

formula and a

diaper change.

she ate quickly,

drooling most of

it into a burp-cloth.

wide smiles, but i couldn’t

enjoy them as much

as i wanted to ’cause i

needed to put her down

so i could find

some paperwork.

dug through stacks of

shit, never finding what

i needed.

instead found lots of

stuff i didn’t want to see.

one pile stuck out.

extensive notes, all of them

written by

liz,

detailing the color

she’d like each room painted.

color samples neatly stacked,

alternate choices mentioned.

notes, samples.

(she was so amazingly organized).

was pleasantly surprised to find

that the color

she had chosen for our bedroom

was almost exactly the

same color i chose

to paint our bedroom

after she died.

(i needed a change just to walk in there).

through the tears i could

see what looked

like a 1, 1, 3 & 1 on the clock.

can’t be that late.

wiped my eyes.

shit. it’s 10:30,

the time

i’d agreed to have

a few folks visit our house.

no time for a shower,

i did my best

to clean up my act.

doorbell rings,

visitors await.

invited them in and met their

baby for the first time.

he and madeline are

going to be good buds.

pals.

they spent a little time

hanging out together,

buds.

the parents marveling

at our children.

they babies exchanged gifts,

(madeline got joey a new jacket, joey got madeline her very own suitcase).

and said goodbye.

later, madeline lounged

on the couch looking

like she has no

cares in the world.

whatevs.

awesome auntie deb arrived

had to change her flight,

which got her in

in the early afternoon.

we hung out on

the couch with

madeline, watching her laugh

and drool.

smiles.
rest.
hanging out.

one of my very

favorite people in

the whole wide world,

auntie yolanda, stopped

by in the late

afternoon with a

ton of clothes for

madeline and a few

gifts for me.

we laughed and joked,

just like the old days.

madeline modeled

her new ear protection,

testing out her ear muffs.
testing out her ear muffs.
testing out her ear muffs.

something i bought her

for when she joins

me at her first concert

(going to see the hold steady on wednesday night at the avalon…she won’t be joining me this time).

the mail came,

madeline’s passport arrived!

for my little world traveler...

we had to leave,

so auntie yo had to go.

heard from one of

the mn creeps…nancy r.

she’s in the los angeles

with her boyfriend

for less than 24 hours

and was hoping to

meet us for dinner.

of course.

met up with them in

the glendale and enjoyed

restaurant.

a great meal and some laughs,

nancy holding madeline

the entire time.

me, nancy, madeline.

finished dinner,

had some dessert

and an after dinner drink

cognac.

then headed home,

exhausted from a busy day.

madeline awake for a

few minutes before passing

out completely.

looking.

stayed up with deb until

5:30am, unable

to peel our eyes from the

adult swim cartoons

on the tv.

6:15am.

i was finally out.

I just wanted to tell you what you have already heard a 1000 times. You are a great father and a great husband. Madeline is adorable and she looks like a great baby. I usually read your blog while feeding my baby Noah, he is a few weeks older than Madeline. he was born on March 7th. and I often tell him - look Noah that’s your future girlfriend. LOL
I wish you the best and you are doing a great job. If you are ever in San Diego let me know, Maybe we can take the babies to the Zoo or Sea World… I think my husband and you would get along great and Madeline can make a new friend.

So glad you got those ear protectors. I see people bring babies to concerts all the time and always want to run over and put my hands over the babies’ ears because what a shame it would be to get permanent ear damage at 6 months!

Shin Chan is my current AS fav, although Venture Bro’s is still going strong.

Funny how we are mentally connected to people. Choosing the bedroom colour is like that. You spend time with your loved one and your souls and minds begin to merge, just as the joining of bodies yields beautiful children like Madeline, so too are there products from these unions.

You have a captive audience and I was tickled pink (how colloquial of me) to read your insight to single mom vs. single dad. I was relieved that you were not blind sided to the raise of your appeal by your life situation. I have no doubt you were appealing before, after all you landed an amazing woman like Liz, but now there is…more appeal? Life is backwards non? I understand it, but I don’t condone it, I believe it is unfair to you in your grieving and, yours and Madeline’s need now and future need to honour the woman who bore her, the woman you loved. I do think your blogs are good therapy though, a way to pass the hours instead of staring at walls one can stare at the computer screen.

Men and women are still animals, we have intelligence but essentially we are driven by instinct. Women are designed to nurture and create life, men are driven to supply and protect. I hope this doesn’t offend the ‘educated’ crowd, I can easily supply academic support here, but keep it simple. We are driven to nurture, most women have the ‘nurturing gene’ (it skipped some completely too) but when a woman hears of a baby who is lacking a mother, it is a tragedy for every woman. Because we all suspect/know the secret joy of being able to produce and how wonderful that can be, it is sad to know of a child who will never be held outside of their mothers wombs, by their mothers themselves. It makes me fuckin cry, and alot of other women too, bc we know it could happen to us. I could not find accurate words to describe the sensation of carrying life in your body. It is the epitomy of being a woman and involves intense attachment and patience. there is definitely something prewired in most women to this accord.

Now of course the dad belonging to the team should be a normal occurrence but as nature would have it men can walk away from their offspring, most woman cannot. My experience is that of the male bailing out, but there are plenty of good men out there who love their wives and children, the public hears of them so little, it explains part of the phenomena of your current stardom. I am relieved that you are a member of the team and that you indeed would have been a member of the team had your cards been dealt differently. That’s the other reason people like you, your real, your honest. We read your life like a novel with the understanding that this shit is real, it is happening every day. While I am drinking my third cup of coffee in the morning you are changing Madeline’s third diaper, and whoa, all of a sudden my day takes a different perspective. That’s alot of what life is about, perspective and living to love everyday.

I know this will blow popular opinion…oh wait I just wanted to say blow, this will go against current trend in response to your offer of the BJ. But I have to rhetorically ask, why not accept the hummer? I though it was kinda wierd to offer, but still, hai….I say this in a light hearted way, not to be offensive, but sharing a thought.

What happens when your sex drive picks up in a few weeks/months/years (don’t forget we are animals after all)…I suspect the mental anguish will arise from a mixture of need and guilt. It is a diificult and complex process of moving on from the people we have loved and lost. We never want to forget, and new experiences can bring about all sorts of confusing feelings. I hope you can candidly work through those feelings when they arise as well, bc. there will never be a shortage of lonely people offering anything and everything in misguided efforts to please and gather personal affirmation. I don’t envy your emotional journey ahead, the road is full of potholes to be sure. I was surprised and relieved that your friends mentioned how this would happen. If you do ever date again I would advise to look for somebody who loves all of you, including Liz and your life with her and your beautiful child but that also cares about YOU (and how this tragedy has changed you). The type of women who would walk into a ready made family for the *right reasons* are a rare breed indeed.

Fuck that was quite the mouthful. As a side note, the reason for my original piping up was that I saw this http://www.vimeo.com/1211060?pg=embed&sec=1211060
(disable the HD for smoother viewing)…anyways I was thinking then about Amelie and how the gnome appears in all those photographs….how fuckin cool to have a Matt and Madeline video starring the Robot. Just an idea ( I have loads of those and I am ever so thankful for the world wide web giving me an outlet to run my mouth). You could even begin composing your reflected portraits and Robot poloroids in slide show with some appropriately corny muzak. Just an idea.

    Be wonderful.

(I hope, hope, hope Matt finds it funny too :))

I think I need a “sleep is for the weak” shirt too since Moira thinks that I don’t need any.

Really should get her a pair of headphones like that too - we had some when I was little because my Dad always dragged us to car races.

I just needed to tell you as I read through tonight I scrolled past the pics of you and Maddy on the couch. My 3 year old daughter saw that made me scroll back so she could investigate. Then she said, “He’s a good Daddy”. Purely child’s instinct…but I would say totally true. Personally I was impressed that she would say such a thing, but there must be a vibe that she caught. Enjoy the long nights (my 2 didn’t sleep the night through until I enforced it at a year….)

Finally got little Joey to bed and now have a chance to say that we had a really nice time visiting with you and Madeline. I don’t know who looks cuter sleeping on the teddy bear (although I’m sure we each have our bias!) and I hope that they get to play together again soon.

And yes, perhaps you may should get a “Sleep Is For The Weak” shirt, too!

    Hey Matt & Madeline,

I’ve just caught up on reading after being in bohemian country (West Virginia). As usual Maddie is beautiful, & I’m glad to see that you are looking less thin Matt.
One question? Where did you get the bear rug/thing the babies are laying on, I need one of those!!
Happy 18/52 BD to Madeline (yeah….I know I’m a couple of days late…..so sue me….)

    Wonderful wishes to you both!

@deb edgar - some great, great words.

love the earphones, and so glad she likes them too. down here, people buy those for their children not to go to cool indie-rock shows, but to go to nascar races. yup. ahhhh - georgia. (i love it anyway, though)

and as an insight into how not cool i was growing up - first concert: michael bolton. (not by choice - went with parents of a firend, but still…)

I found this site through the Storked site and this is my first time commenting. First, I’m so sorry about Liz and I think you are doing an amazing job with Madeline. I also like the headphone pics but I especially love the one with her arms behind her head; she looks like such a beauty queen in that shot. You can tell she knows she’s a beauty.

    Asalamalaykom,

Writing to you from the lamplit streets of St. Paul. LOL! Really must be a fan if I’m running out in the night to get my “fix”.

Just wanted to say that Miss Madeline is definately the definition of “Chillaxing” on her bear rug.
