sunday.

how about i

just tell you when

madeline doesn’t sleep through

the night?

(’cause she did again today).

today’s gonna be a busy day

at home.

had breakfast with our friends

after they posed

with the robot.

kim + kids + robot.

then we had

a bunch of visitors.

auntie patty and uncle dave,

in town from the nv,

stopped by to meet madeline

auntie patty and madeline.

and the robot

robot + auntie patty.
dave + robot

they also talked to me

a little bit.

later new friend antonia

stopped by with some

gifts for madeline

and me, as well

as some cookies.

once again,

she was here to

meet the robot.

antonia + robot.

later auntie aislinn stopped

by and held my baby

as we talked about

liz.

realized that

liz

would have been

pissed about all these

visitors seeing our

house in its current state

(a total fucking mess),

but i figure she’d

understand under the

circumstances so i tried

to not feel too bad.

said goodbye to the visitors

and spent a few minutes

alone with madeline.

then it was time

to meet with our friends,

to hang out with them

on their last

evening in town.

they wanted to do

something a little touristy,

so we headed up

mullolland drive to get

a view of the city.

the los angeles.

took a few photos of our

friends and

got madeline out of

her car seat long enough

to get a couple of

great shots of us.

madeline on my head.
madeline, me.

finished up and headed

madeline in weeds.

back to the car.

saw some young dudes with

some hair straight

from the mid-80s sunset strip.

rawk!

so, so awesome.

drove back home, taking

the long route

down highland

mirror.

to sunset and back

to the house.

had a nice dinner

then said goodbye

to our friends,

wishing them a safe

flight back to the midwest.

sat with madeline

and listened to one

of my new fav.

songs play over and over.

(swear i should have written parts of it).

madeline slept hard.

i went to bed relatively early,

knowing that the coming week

is going to be nutz.

not a bad day.

Sounds like your day was good! Overall they seem to be getting a little better. Will listen to your new favorite song later – you’ve introduced us all to some great (and some not so great :) music.

Wow, that’s a lot of visitors! Yay for longer periods of sleep for Madeline! Except, I’d often find I would still wake up at the usual times and never fall back asleep…until she started to wake. :)

Who wants to clean house when the days are long and beautiful? Or when you have such a lovely baby and nice friends that stop by? Not me either. I hope the rest of the week is going well. It looks a little warm there, it is here too, 90 today.

Great pics!! Those dudes from Hollywood. Were they all dressed in “Poison” like clothes? I saw these same guys 3 weeks ago at the Saddle Ranch!! LOL They rocked their look! Swore I was back in 1982.

I think Madeline needs to pass some of her sleeping through the night knowlege to my daughter, who stopped sleeping through the night around Madeline’s age.
Hmm, play with the baby or clean the house. Baby wins all the time at my place. Which is why we need to do some serious cleaning before Nana comes to babysit on Saturday.
Wait a minute, you have a robot. Put that slacker to use! Show him reruns of “The Jetsons” and make him take notes about all the things that Rosie did for that family.

@Amy: I’m one of those lucky people who has a two year old that generally doesn’t sleep through the night and I now have a 3 month old who also wakes up occasionally, although usually less than my two year old. Anyway, Matt, you are so lucky to have such a good sleeper. I hope she keeps it up for you! Glad you seem to be having good days!

Don’t sweat the dirty house….you’re spending quality time with your daughter, friends and in getting bits and pieces of yourself back. I wanted to say too, Kudos to you for getting out there and doing various “stuff” all the time. I’m a mom of four, and I find myself stuck in the house quite often, with a case of the doldrums. (if I had more $$$, I’d probably do more going out and about, but that’s another story!) I also think that your ease and frequency with traveling and taking Madeline places every day will really help her with being easily adaptable to all kinds of people and situations, and that’s a wonderful thing. I have a neighbor who never takes her children anywhere except the doctor. They are strange, unfriendly little people and she doesn’t see that!
That said…my kids have been trying to work on a little something for your sweet princess, but it’s not going as quickly as we had anticipated!
I hope you’re having a fabulous day today and that you will soon be able to enjoy those luxurious extended hours of sleep that you should be!

Beautiful song. This is, I’m sure, a cliche you’ve heard a million times, but please, please, *please* don’t damn the beginning of your healing. There’s nothing your wife would’ve wanted more for you and your beautiful daughter, nor anything you and others who have lost so much deserve more than healing. There will always be scars, but allow yourself to stop picking the scabs. Just because you’re not openly bleeding doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten or that all the pain has gone away – it just means you’ve found enough peace to start moving again.

I bet your house isn’t as much of a shithole as this place, and we REALLY don’t have any excuses. Other than having hundreds of kids. two VERY full time jobs, both adults are completely domestica-phobic and also very much air-heads. Oh, and very messy too. Matt, have I lost the plot … or what is your job? You seem a bit creative in the pix that you take … is that what you do for a living? Or are you on ‘maternity’ leave? Forgive me if I sound dumb, things are probably different over there compared to here. I had nine months with my little girl, then it was back to work. What about you? Hmm… maybe I should go back to minding my own business now. What is it about you two that is so intriguing? I actually go onto your blog about four times a day … ok I am a little obsessive anyway, but its like I have to keep checking you guys are ok. I think its called ‘virtual mothering’!

    Hiya Mateo,

As a former Valley Girl (for sure!), I can’t tell you how much I enjoy seeing the pictures you’ve taken around the LA – brings back alot of fond memories. And only there would you see dudes still sporting 80’s hair. If it were the South methinks you’d see lotsa mullets……. ;-)

Okey dokey – so the GG is a sleepin’ fool – count your blessings! Prolly worn out from all the visitors and field trips – not a bad thing.

Re the state of your house – fuck it. As long as you don’t have cockroaches and science projects growing in your fridge it’s all good! Quality time with Maddy is much more important, and I’m quite sure your guests could give a rat’s ass about your housekeeping abilities.

Heavy song there, Matt. I can see why you can relate to it big time. I’m not really sure about your musical tastes, but there’s a song by Seether that makes me think about you when I hear it – “Rise Above This”.

    Hang tough, bud.

  33. Posted 7/30/2008 at 1:14 pm | Permalink

I had to laugh when I read this: “liz would have been pissed about all these visitors seeing our house in its current state (a total fucking mess).”

I’ve thought this so often too, that Charley would be seriously annoyed with me for how trashed my house has been this past year, up until 3 weeks ago when I finally got all the shit picked up, finished, and put away for listing it for sale. Then again, I’m not living in his/OUR house anymore, so I grumpily tell “him” he can shove it if he doesn’t like it…or send his ghost over so it can pick up his share of the slack. =)

Yeah, I just don’t give a rat’s ass most days what my house is like. Since I live in the boonies now, nobody ever sees it except my parents and sisters, so what difference does it make? I don’t want it to be a shithole, however, but clutter and dust bunnies just don’t even register. It’s more important for me to focus what little extra energy I have most days on something positive or beneficial. A clean house just ain’t that important.

But dang, it would have driven Charley nuts…. =) He and Liz must be up groaning together somewhere….

  34. Posted 7/30/2008 at 1:21 pm | Permalink

The only decent looking room in my house is the baby room. The rest of it is a total fucking mess.

Matt-Weird…I had bought this album (cd) a while ago after seeing it on your lastfm (I only stalk your music, I promise). Anyway, the first time I heard this song I thought of your situation. I really love this album….then again, I AM irish, so some of the sadder stuff appeals to me….
Way back, I thought about sending you a cd of some songs that reminded me of your situation, but didnt for several reasons 1) How cliche is a “mix-tape”? 2) It’s a little too personal for someone I dont’t know 3) You’d probably laugh your ass off at my taste in music (remember, I live in a musical black hole) and 4) how depressing! Thats the last thing you need :-D
Either way, love this cd and several of the others I’ve pilfered off of your lastfm site. Thanks for expanding my musical horizons beyond the horrible shit that gets played around here. Seriously…its bad!
On a lighter note, I cannot believe the cargo van turned convertible with the hair band dudes. Would love to see their faces to see if they are pushing 50 has been’s or 20-something wanna be’s. Of course, our PA Monster trucks could give that a run for the money. (Why, why, why do I live here????)

ps.-I’m getting a weird vibe here today…like everyone is walking on eggshells after yesterday or something….Are we all still freaked out about the blow job thing? I kinda am…

pps-Glad that the Robot is back. We all made it clear that we are not in love with Matt, but how many of us harbor a secret crush on the robot? Ladies? Creeps?

My house is a filthy freakin’ mess. I cannot even believe it. I should take pictures and post ‘em on my blog, cuz y’all would not even believe it. I try to keep one clean toilet around in case of barfing, but that’s all I can muster.

As for la musica, I have the new Coldplay album, and … well, it makes me think of you, Matty. I dunno what Chris Martin’s deal was when he wrote this stuff, but it sounds like he lost someone close to him. There are some great lyrics in the song ‘Lost!’:

    Just because I’m losin’
    Doesn’t mean I’m lost

    Just because I’m hurtin’
    Doesn’t mean I’m hurt

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYDOWGlPDTU

I enjoyed the song. Actually looked up the lyrics. Very fitting.

I envy you with the baby who sleeps. Hannah will be 4 months next week and is starting to teeth. It has been painful for both of us.

I have to hide your guy from the 80s pic from my husband or he will want the hair and I might come home to my van looking like that one day. He is dangerous with a circular saw.

Blame the messy house on the earthquake. That is what I am saying and I’m in Chicago.
