HOLA Matt!
BUEN DIA
Nice to know that you are having fun at the BIG APPLE!!
Sorry to know that SO late, one of MY BEST friend lives and works over there (Brooklyn/Manhattan, to be more precised) and would be nice have the chance to meet her as MY embassador…anyway, maybe next time!
Love to know that you are ENJOYING your time together!

Sounds like so much fun! I was in NYC two weekends ago…LOVE it! I am glad you & Maddy were able to enjoy yourselves, especially with a nice stay at a beautiful hotel. Have a safe trip home!
-Kalena from Columbus
Man I just came back from NYC too this weekend, I even caught myself looking for Madeline and you throughout my trip thinking just in case. And what do you know, you WERE there. my kids heart NY too and we were just two streets over from where you stayed….
Sounds and looks like you had a wonderful time in NYC. Too bad you didn’t make it to Hoboken, it is the birthplace of baseball, Frank Sinatra, the ice cream cone and Blimpie!
What a nice start on your way and in NYC. I can see why you would be tired of telling your story over and over, but I’m glad you have a rule to tell people. It really touches a lot of people who hear it.
Have a safe, uneventful trip home. Hopefully the flight attendants will be just as sweet. That was really nice of them to take such good care of you guys!
Free wine and free chocolates??? Man, I flew with my 7 month old son solo overseas when he was 7 months old and didn’t get offered anything. In fact they moved the man next to me to first class, while I stayed in my sardine can seat with a baby. You do have some luck in your travels; Madeline must be a lucky charm.
Hello – Long time reader but I’ve never posted. Your story, your writing, your photographs have touched me deeply and I think of you, Liz and Madeline everyday.
I have to say, I think Madeline is one of the cutest little babies I’ve ever seen (and I have 2 beautiful daughter’s – 2 1/2 yrs old and 7 months – I think it’s wonderful that you have taken her to so many great places already! I didn’t step out of the house for weeks after I had my first daughter.
I had to post today because I can’t believe you’re in NYC, my hometown (work in Manhattan, live in Queens). Hope you’re having fun! The weather was beautiful yesterday and it is today too. Not sure if you’re still here but I have to admit that when I went out for lunch today (I’m in Midtown, not far from where you’re staying), I looked around for you two.
Read the Glamour piece…
I wonder if the process of telling your story so often is more help or hinderance to the process of grieving a loved one? My immediate response was that it must be terribly exhausting…but then I’ve also learned that externalizing a story can be healing? Does anyone else have a thought pertaining to their own experience of loss?
Since we’re all in a bit of a lull right now–waiting for NY pics–was curious if you and Madeline are coming back to MN for the State Fair? I bet you can get some pretty amazing and disgusting pictures for the non-MN fans! Just think of all the pork products on a stick…..
Good for you guys!! I am reminded in reading the article that you have a truly inspirational way of dealing with Liz’s death. I am sure that she is so, SO proud of you doing these amazing things with Madeline. I have a feeling that is exactly what she would have wanted! Can’t wait to see pictures! We are missing you both!
i do admire chrissy for how well she is doing as a single mom and a writer, but i can’t help but feel that she is desperate for a man, and for her son to have a father figure in his life, pronto. i don’t know, there is even something about this trip… anyway, i am probably coming off as WAY judgmental, but i always seem to get vibes from people, and this is what i am picking up from her. that being said, i hope that matt had a fantastic trip to nyc and maddie is getting cuter by the second!
I have been reading your blog since you wrote for Chrissy’s blog. I pray for you and Madeline. I saw this poem and thought of you.
Please Be Gentle
By Jill B. Englar
Please be gentle with me for I am grieving.
The sea I swim in is a lonely one
and the shore seems miles away.
Waves of despair numb my soul
as I struggle through each day.
My heart is heavy with sorrow.
I want to shout and scream
and repeatedly ask ‘why?’
At times, my grief overwhelms me
and I weep bitterly,
so great is my loss.
Please don’t turn away
or tell me to move on with my life.
I must embrace my pain
before I can begin to heal.
Companion me through tears
and sit with me in loving silence.
Honor where I am in my journey,
not where you think I should be.
Listen patiently to my story,
I may need to tell it over and over again.
It’s how I begin to grasp the enormity of my loss.
Nurture me through the weeks and months ahead.
Forgive me when I seem distant and inconsolable.
A small flame still burns within my heart,
and shared memories may trigger
both laughter and tears.
I need your support and understanding.
There is no right or wrong way to grieve.
I must find my own path.
Please, will you walk beside me?
GAH – I have seen the pictures of hot dish on a stick with cream of mushroom soup for dipping. Where do you people come up with that shit? YEESH – though all the other items offered on a stick look pretty good!
(and I am glad I looked up the definition of chowderhead before calling Minnesotan’s that. WHY I thought that was a word for you guys I have no idea. Perhaps because my cousin uses it so much)
Glad you had such BEAUTIFUL weather for your trip here Matt. Awesome!
Back after a long absence…but have been faithfully reading. Long overdue but my husband wanted you to know in reference to the comments (ahem…offers) you get from women…he said that he does not have a crush on you. Whew. Glad we solved that question.

@ Katrina – I tend to say things that I am thinking and regret it. I hit post too soon sometimes. Matt knows that all too well with me. He has very kindly edited posts for me, and not even published one.
I am kind of hoping you are regretting what you posted. Because it was really mean.
katrina,
sometimes a trip is just a trip. if you’ve been reading chrissy’s blog from the beginning you know that her son has many father figures in the form of her dad and brothers. we think we know these people personally because we read their blogs…but we have no idea…
Sooo glad your trip to NYC included a visit to Dos Caminos! One of my faves… I hope you and Madeline liked it (despite mean purple shirt hipster girl).
Uh oh, you were ok with Madeline having a date? Just wait, in 15 years you will have the shot gun leaning against the door. What is it Bill Engvall says? “I don’t have a problem going back to prison”
New to your blog. I hope you and Madeline had a wonderful time in my hometown. I haven’t told my 10 mo son that you and she were here… he’d be upset. Eric likes taking his friends on the carousel in Central Park. We wish you a safe trip home to LA-LA land.
@Melissa: How can you hate canned soup? Have you had Progresso chicken corn chowder? Cuz that is THE SHIT. And I could not live without Campbell’s ABC soup.
Wow…. totally jealous of your visit to Dos Caminos.
Best Margaritas (and guacamole)… EVER.
2 week countdown is on until I get to drink one (or several)…reservation is already made!
Hope you have a *good* Tuesday.
Can’t wait to hear all about your adventures in the Big Apple.
Reading some of these comments makes me feel that perhaps some of us Internet Broads are a little over protective of our Matt & Maddie. I’ve never commented on a specific comment but- Katrina!! Nasty. I’m here to show support & love the stories and pics. I appreciate Matt giving me the opportunity to do that. I can’t judge him or anyone else here based on what I see and read. Think before you post, please.

Lopez,
Nobody grieves in the same way period. Your way may not be the other person’s way. I have found that grief is a VERY personal thing.
Hey Matt,
It looks and reads like you and Madeline had a great time.
How many airmiles do you have?
Since we’re all in a bit of a lull right now–waiting for NY pics–was curious if you and Madeline are coming back to MN for the State Fair? I bet you can get some pretty amazing and disgusting pictures for the non-MN fans! Just think of all the pork products on a stick…..
Hurry up!!!!
Pork on a stick rules.
Sounds like you had a blast! Washington is amazing this time of year, maybe we’ll be the next stop on your state travels?
Madeline had a date? OMG she has the best life! the best daddy, the best clothes, the best shoes! she is just a fabulous little lady!

The hot dish at the Great Minnesota Get Together [State Fair] is actually pretty good. I like mine with ketchup too!
Wow Katrina, that is a bold thing to say about Chrissy…I can’t say if I agree/dissagree…but that was a bold statement!

Dont get me wrong. I am a total fan of tater tots and meatballs.
But I am PICKY about my meatballs. I am from Italian country here. Not that I am Italian except by injection, but we sure know how to make them here.
When I visit the midwest I tend to be a bit stuck up about food. I live in food central here. We have the best of everything really.
That and I hate canned soup.
@ Kim, that was fucking awesome.
