What a strange encounter Chrissy had. What a total a-hole (not to mention idiot).

On an unrelated note, Madeline’s pink and white striped socks were so cute in the pictures that I was forced to come out of semi-lurkdom and post my admiration. Glad you had a good trip, can’t wait to hear about what Madeline did.

What a great video! Your friend Lauren is Awesome.

My favorite clip is Madeline at the end, passed out, with her (is it candy?) necklace hanging.

Excellent song, too! Have you seen Into The Wild? Or read the book?

    Can’t wait to hear more!

And the Storked! article. Whuu? How she was able to keep her grace in the face of such an ass is beyond me. I would have been tempted to just kick him in the jewels and vamoose. And wow…what the heck is up with the dude in the Storked! article? Great video. M is so adorable. And I confess that we’ve done the same thing in a cab. We go to Shriner’s in Salt Lake for surgery for my son’s bilateral radial club hands, and once the bus from Shriner’s wasn’t there, so we had to take a cab from the airport to the hospital.

We were in a desperate shame spiral and had to get to the clinic on time.

Anyway, glad you liked NYC – you both seemed really happy there, which is excellent to see.

I didn’t read about your friends’ asshole encounter- yet.. sometimes I reach my asshole quota for the day early.

I want to fly off to new york- and get lost in the lights and flow of the big city.

Madeline sure is a jet setter- She will see it all before she can walk!!!

The video is great.. it is nice to see Madeline “in action”.. moving and feeling and expressing her little self.

I am curious to see if this.

“(and i don’t want any comments about the cab-ride portion of the video. seriously).”

    will work.
you get complaints about your over use of the word “the”.. people love to find fault.

why bother trying to be a good person when you can just try to make everyone else look slightly worse?
    right?

looks like a great trip Matt!

    Asalamalaykom,

    The video–wow.

The music and lyrics really got to me today with, “I’m going to rise up and find my direction magnetically.”

Then the images matched with the music had me tearing up. It’s the moment where Miss Madeline is trying to find comfort in her stroller and dad’s hand comes in to help her find her pacifier. And I saw there was something on that arm–what was that? I had forgotten about the tattoo. Then, the moment swelled in my heart. This wasn’t just any dad with any baby. This was Matt and Liz’s baby who was born on the 24th. The other arm I didn’t see, but I knew it was there and I knew what it said.

The whole idea of you continuing is very meaningful to me. You have no other choice. You are rising up and finding your direction.

The rest of us have no excuse.

May God be with the two of you, protecting you and guiding you every step of the way.

    Asalamalaykom,

Sorry to post twice. Wanted to thank jlkennedy for the info on the song. Here are the lyrics for Rise:

Such is the way of the world
    You can never know
Just where to put all your faith
    And how will it grow

    Gonna rise up
Burning back holes in dark memories
    Gonna rise up
    Turning mistakes into gold

Such is the passage of time
    Too fast to fold
    And suddenly swallowed by signs
    Low and behold

    Gonna rise up
    Find my direction magnetically
    Gonna rise up
Throw down my ace in the hole

So we’re not allowed to say the cab part of the video was really cute too :-) ?

A couple of years ago, my parents took my sister, her husband and their then-two-year-old daughter to London for a week (we didn’t get to go because I’d just given birth :-( ) Apparently, one of my niece’s favorite things to do was go for a ride in one of those big black taxis and sit on the rear-facing folding seat. There was just no way they were going to haul a carseat around London — and other families didn’t seem to be doing it either — so they decided to take their chances. And it was fine. Watchagonnadoo, as they say somewhere.

I just wanted to let you know that seeing your face lit up with a smile was about the most wonderful thing ever. Not because your a dad loving his baby, but because you’re a husband who is grieving the loss of his wife and I see hope and healing in your smile.

You know, I’m not much of a crying type of a person. I’ve been reading this blog all along and it hasn’t made me cry yet. Don’t get me wrong, the emotion is there, but the tears just usually aren’t. But, that video did me in. I think what finally hit me is that here is this sweet little girl. She has SO many people that love her, I mean really LOVE her and want such great things for her. People that have never, and will never meet her, have the fortune to actually know her, but love her nonetheless. And though it’s such a horrid circumstance that brought all of these strangers.friends into her life, you are capturing the thoughts, care, prayers and love from all of us. Someday, I really do hope, she will realize how many Aunts and Uncles and guardian angles and friends she has who do, truly love her.

Super video (yay! Lauren!) :) Loved seeing Madeline (and you) animated and happy…she must’ve really enjoyed her time in NYC.

And you know how people drive here in India with their kids… I’m sure you’ve seen tons of kids in the front seat (driver’s or passenger’s side) with no seatbelt, sticking their heads outside the car as they roll down the streets; or better yet the kids standing up on the motorcycle in between his parents as they weave through traffic. I always find it amazing that they manage to stay on and hardly anyone gets hurt!

Oh well, glad you and Miss Madeline are back safe and sound in LA :)

That video is amazing. I think I’ve watched it about 5 times. So beautiful.

I’ve been reading this blog since April and have never posted because really what can I say that has not already been said? I had to post today because that video was amazing. I can feel the love that you have for Madeline in every post but to see the two of you interact moved me to tears. She is a very lucky little girl to have you for a dad.
I just want to leave you with these words that touched me when I lost a treasured family member. “May the healing touch of time ease the sorrow that you bear, take it from your heart and leave warm memories there– and may those cherished memories give you courage, strength and peace, as you realize a love so great can never, never cease.”

First time poster, but long-time reader (heard of you through Momma’s Losin’ It). You’re doing a wonderful job, one so tough that most people can’t imagine, but extremely admirable all the same. I look forward to your posts and I know others do, too. Thank you for sharing with us!

LOVE the video – so sweet! Such a great memory to have from your fun NYC trip together. Looks like you two are doing great! Can’t wait to hear more about your trip. Ok – and I love the song to the video! It sounds like Pearl Jam, is it? If so, what is the song title? Let me know if you can. Thanks!

Your love for Liz is so apparent. Your love for Madeline is so fulfilling.

You are my LastFM friend… You are my friend in spirt… oh, if only you were my friend in reality!

You are truly an amazing father, husband and friend… pictures are in fact worth more then words could ever say.

For all of you that were confused what Matt was referring to about the cab section of the video, I’m pretty sure he was referring to the fact that Madeline wasn’t in a car seat.

No worries Matt! You’re wonderful, and you and your daughter look so beautiful together. :-D

  297. Posted 8/6/2008 at 4:56 pm | Permalink

Adorable video, Matt. So glad that Maddy and JD got to have a “date” — my two favorite blogging babies get to meet!!

Now, I get to be the car seat/cab ride asshole.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t take Madeline in a cab — or any other motor vehicle — ever again. You’ve had enough heartbreak in your life. And taking an infant or child in a motor vehicle without a proper car seat is asking for trouble.

“Car seats reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants and by 54% for children ages 1-4, and reduce the need for hospitalization by 69% for children ages 4 and under.”

To those posters who’ve said that foregoing a car seat in NYC is legal — that doesn’t mean it’s a safe thing to do. Whether or not it’s legal is irrelevant. I don’t care if Matt gets a ticket.

To the poster (290) who said that a Vegas cabbie wouldn’t let them bring their car seat — that’s unbelievable! And I’m quite sure THAT’S illegal, and if you’d reported that cabbie to the Taxicab Authority, they would have agreed with you. It is not “an acceptable thing” to skip the car seat because some asshole cabbie in Vegas told you so!!!!! I’ve stood in Vegas cab lines many times, and I guarantee you I would have let that stupid fuck go risk someone else’s lives, not mine or my child’s.

(Once, I saw a Bellagio valet installing a car seat in one of their limos. So some people in Vegas understand the importance. :) )

To the posters who commented on the NYC subway, the BART in San Francisco, and other mass transit systems — there are many, many, many less accidents, injuries, and deaths on mass transit systems than in automobiles. So while I *might* take my 2-year-old daughter on a BART train without a car seat, I would never, ever, ever, EVER do so in a car.

Am I paranoid about this? Maybe. But I’d rather be paranoid than careless. The fact is, there are a lot of shitty, shitty drivers out there. And it only takes one drunk running a red light, one person falling asleep at the wheel, one person yakking away at their cellphone and drifting over the center line to change lives permanently.

    Car seats save lives.

Call me an asshole for ignoring Matt’s request to not discuss the cab ride, I don’t care.

But PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Matt and everyone else, please use car seats, always!!!!!! If it’s “inconvenient” to lug a car seat around NYC or another big city, then either move or buy a goddamn car. Don’t risk your child(ren) because of “convenience.”

  298. Posted 8/6/2008 at 5:00 pm | Permalink

Of course, my 3rd paragraph above should start: “PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t take Madeline in a cab — or any other motor vehicle — WITHOUT A CAR SEAT ever again.”

Obviously, not riding in a car at all is not an option. :)

What a beautiful little video! I’m new to your blog (linked via the KARE – 11 website here in MN) and have become pretty attached to your updates. I have a Madeline myself (15 months) and I am just enamored with yours. She’s absolutely, stunningly beautiful. Those big, bright eyes! That smile! Wow. And the two of you just have this obvious connection — ok, enough, I’m getting all teary-eyed.

Can’t wait to hear about the amazing thing she did.

  301. Posted 8/6/2008 at 6:33 pm | Permalink

I understand what the word seriously means.

But some things are more important than being polite, and respecting Matt’s wishes. The safety of children is one of those things.

This is Matt’s blog, and he has the right and ability to delete all of my comments if he likes. He also could have turned off comments for this post.

If I change even ONE person’s attitude regarding car seats in cabs, the fact that I look like a jerk is irrelevant.

    Seriously.

I’ve been following your story since the beginning, but have felt a little strange about doing it. I don’t think I would have commented ever, if it weren’t for the video clip. As I watched it, I smiled through a lot of tears. My heart has been broken for you and your precious baby girl. You have occupied a lot of my thoughts and prayers. Even though you are a stranger friend, it still hurts terribly to watch you hurt. The video gave me HOPE tonight! I saw a twinkle in your eye and the tender connection you have with Madeline. What a joy it was to see your laughter!
Since this will probably be my one and only post, I wanted to tell you how much I have LOVED getting to know Liz a little bit through your stories and pictures. She was an amazing woman who is inspiring me to live each moment very fully. I can only imagine how painful it must be to write about her, but I just wanted you to know that there are a lot of us out here who would love to know her better if you are ever up to sharing her. And finally I just have to say, FUCK the carseat guy. That was totally uncalled for.

Sorry for triple posting Matt, but obv asshole doesn’t know that cabs in NYC will take off while you are TRYING to buckle your kid in (this happened to me with my boos). Nor does he know that owning a car in NY will not only cost you the price of the car and insurance, but the parking of said car will cost you more than most people. And I really mean MOST, will cost as much as an apartment.

Nor do I gather that asshole realizes that lugging that much shit around isn’t just an inconvenience in NY, its impossible!, because people don’t get out of your way when you are trying to carry a car seat, a stroller, etc

@Melissa from NJ – I don’t think you realize that sometimes when you’re so darn busy calling out everybody who has annoying comments, you come off as an “asshole” (to quote you) yourself. If you want to be the playground monitor, please go to ParentsConnect or Facebook and bitch all you want about how stupid everybody here is. But please, please, please….stop breeding negativity here. I think that Matt can defend himself.

To everybody – whenever anybody says anything kind of annoying here, certain people want to start in with the “fuck that person” or “that person is an asshole”. Maybe you think it’ll amuse Matt. But when people are truly asshole-ish, Matt responds in a way that (I think) makes people want to see his point….he doesn’t do it in a way that makes it an “us” against “them” thing.

So, because some cabbies drive off before the car seat is buckled, you stop trying in all cabs??

Riding in a car is the most dangerous thing that children do on a regular basis. Car accidents are by far the most common cause of childhood injuries and fatalities.

If it’s too expensive to own a car in NYC, and too difficult to use a car seat in taxis, then I sure as hell wouldn’t raise a child there.

My daughter has NEVER ridden in a motor vehicle un-secured. And she won’t until she’s old enough for it to be safe. When we travel, I won’t even ride with her in a shuttle from the airport to a rental car facility. I either book on-airport rental cars, or my wife and daughter wait in the airport while I go get the car.

Cars are dangerous. Kids need car seats. I don’t give a shit what they “do in India” or anywhere else.

Matt, I don’t mean to be such an asshole on your comment thread. I suspect you already know that riding with Maddy like that in the cab was a stupid thing to do, and you probably won’t do it again anyway. ESPECIALLY after having a car accident yourself last week!!!!!

Thank G-d Maddy was in a car seat then.

He is a dad doing the best he can making the most of a shitty thing like loosing his wife and daughter’s mother.
Notice how you said your WIFE waits with the kids for you to bring the car. In a perfect world or a fair one to say the least, Liz would be waiting with Madeline, but she’s not. Oh and by the way BART in the SF Bay Area doesn’t have seat belts. So maybe you should just go back to your bubble and never go anywhere.

I live in Europe and I wear my baby in the Ergo all the time on the bus. I also use it in the taxi, I just put the belt around me and not her. All of my friends use slings on public transport. In a perfect world you would find a carseat in every bus and taxi.
On a different safety note, I worry about sleeping on the couch with a baby. The chance of SIDS is highest this way. I have a friend who lost her baby this way when she was 7 months so I m super sensitive. Best place for baby is her own bed in your room.

    Asalamalaykom,

This is why I come back to check on the comments. MAN! Who would have thought that comments on a lovely video of a man and his daughter would have devolved into a carseat debate!

When Matt wrote the disclaimer, “and i don’t want any comments about the cab-ride portion of the video. seriously,” I understood him.

I got that he meant he wasn’t a 100% perfect father who kept his daughter 100% safe. There was a margin for error. How much? Depends who you talk to. The family in Bangalore would have been mightily impressed; Eric…not so much.

I guess, in the struggle to do your best (as most of us are attempting) we can’t always handle someone thumping us over the head with a better way.

It’s like the parable of a drowing man who gets help from a friend on the shore in the form of a lecture. “You shouldn’t have swam out so far!” He yells.

The man, about to go under, pleads, “Can you pull me out first and talk to me later?”

The cool thing about Matt is that he actually knows when he can’t handle the well-meaning lecture and tells us beforehand. I thought that would stem the tide, but it didn’t. It actually isn’t respectful to ignore his pleas on his site. While I’ve tried to understand posters in the past who wanted to reach out with words, I’m not as understanding of this time.

I have put babies in slings and ridden in cabs. Everyday? No. Hardly ever. I am a crazed car-seat mama who tightens that seatbelt like my kid’s life depended on it…because it did and does. But, hey! I had to deal with the situation as it was and not as I wished it to be.

It’s good to remember this Arabic caution: Take care of the plank in your own eye before you complain about the splinter in mine.

Matt–Just back and have missed a couple of posts, so catching up. I KNEW my renewed faith in humanity was premature…
