Matt, There are so many thoughts that just went through my head reading what you wrote on Rachel’s blog and looking at the pictures of Liz but its hard to put them into writing. The picture of Liz on your wedding day just gave me chills. She was so beautiful. And Liz really did “glow” when she was pregnant. I always thought people were full of shit when they told me I was glowing while I was pregnant, but she really did. And then the picture of the one time Liz saw Madeline brought me to tears. I’ve followed your blog for a long time, but I guess it was a reminder of what you have endured in the last 4+ months and how far you have come. I didn’t comment the other day about you driving Liz’s car, but I am so proud of you for facing that challenge head on. And it brought me to tears again when you wrote about Madeline grabbing your finger just when you needed her to. I am sure yesterday was a really hard day, but I am also sure Madeline made it a little bit easier. BTW, Gina’s pictures of you and Madeline are gorgeous! She has great subjects of course, but what a talented photographer! I hope you are enjoying your time in the Banff. Take care….

    Hi Matt,

I’m new to your story and your blog. I just found you yesterday and haven’t been able to pull myself away from reading your posts. I will certainly become a regular reader now.

I just wanted to say that the photos by Gina are beautiful. Yesterday, when I was going back through your archives, obviously the whole experience was emotional. But once I got to that first slideshow that Gina did for you, that set off the tears and I found myself bawling at my desk (thankfully, it was after hours and there was no one at work but me).

Actually, it was the realization that you wear Liz’s rings on your pinky that did it. I had noticed it in pictures before the slideshow, but thought it was a funky pinky ring. Seeing Gina’s photos was the first time I saw them clearly enough to figure out what they were. And for whatever reason, I guess that made the pain you have endured real for me.

I can’t even begin to imagine what you are going through… but I just wanted to tell you how amazing I think you are. I know you are not the first father to ever lose his wife and the mother of his child(ren), but the manner and timing in which you lost her (it seems) is especially difficult. To have to pick up the pieces to care for a newborn baby… it’s just amazing. And from what you’ve written and the photos you’ve shared… it is so completely obvious how much you love that baby. As you should, but still.

In the photo above, I could not help but see the striking resemblence Madeline shares with Liz. Wow. She is (and Liz was) absolutely beautiful.

Best wishes to you. I’ll be keeping up with you, for sure.

    Heather

P.S. I just have to know–do you pronounce Madeline: “Made-LYNN” or “Made-LIE-N”? I assumed Made-LYNN throughout all my reading (since Madeline was my great-grandmother’s name and spelling). But when I saw Gina refer to her daughter Madeleine (with different spelling), I started to wonder. :)

I tried to match your breathing
Beating my little heart against yours
Perfect were the nights we were sleeping

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? My first wedding anniversary approaches and we’re talking babies and kids, and as I read your blog and think about my hopes for my life with my husband/best friend/partner in crime, I’m terrified, but also incredibly reassured. I can’t begin to imagine what you’ve gone through, but I can see that you are doing a beautiful job raising your daughter. Add one more name to your list of stranger friends.

Matt, I thought you’d appreciate this… I took my 9 month old in for his well-baby checkup and he’s 30 inches long. I’m a short mama like Liz (59 3/4 inches tall). I spent the rest of the day being ridiculed by people pointing out that my 9 month old was more than half as tall as his mom. Thought of you and Liz every time.

Matt, I’m not sure if I’ve ever commented or not. I read that your wedding anniversary was yesterday. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry and I’m praying for you and Madeline every day. You are an exceptional father and Madeline is a beautiful (and good-natured from the sound of it) baby. From the pictures you have posted of Liz, I think Madeline looks like her Mama. Same pretty, bright eyes and big, big smile.

I truly am sorry that you lost your wife. Thank you for sharing your life with us. We are all better for it. Natalie

Gina took wonderful photos of you both! Madeline is a little Liz all the way (I do see a few “Matt expressions” thrown in there occassionally).
