Love seeing new photos of Madeline – that outfid is great! Just read your post on rachel sarah’s site. I’m just a blog reader, but I think of you and Madeline (and Liz) often and wonder how you are doing. Didn’t realize this was an anniversary week. Tough stuff. Thinking of you always….

Matt, There are so many thoughts that just went through my head reading what you wrote on Rachel’s blog and looking at the pictures of Liz but its hard to put them into writing. The picture of Liz on your wedding day just gave me chills. She was so beautiful. And Liz really did “glow” when she was pregnant. I always thought people were full of shit when they told me I was glowing while I was pregnant, but she really did. And then the picture of the one time Liz saw Madeline brought me to tears. I’ve followed your blog for a long time, but I guess it was a reminder of what you have endured in the last 4+ months and how far you have come. I didn’t comment the other day about you driving Liz’s car, but I am so proud of you for facing that challenge head on. And it brought me to tears again when you wrote about Madeline grabbing your finger just when you needed her to. I am sure yesterday was a really hard day, but I am also sure Madeline made it a little bit easier. BTW, Gina’s pictures of you and Madeline are gorgeous! She has great subjects of course, but what a talented photographer! I hope you are enjoying your time in the Banff. Take care….

Love Gina’s photos and your blog on Rachel’s site. Enjoy the cool weather…it’s cooler in Texas now, ONLY about 90…we’re getting a Canadian front tonight and it will be down in the 80′s! Wahoo…great for August. Kudos to you for joining those of us who braved August weather for a wedding…ours was outside in Oklahoma with no backup. Back in the hippie dippie days. Worked though. Hi Matt,

I’m new to your story and your blog. I just found you yesterday and haven’t been able to pull myself away from reading your posts. I will certainly become a regular reader now.

I just wanted to say that the photos by Gina are beautiful. Yesterday, when I was going back through your archives, obviously the whole experience was emotional. But once I got to that first slideshow that Gina did for you, that set off the tears and I found myself bawling at my desk (thankfully, it was after hours and there was no one at work but me).

Actually, it was the realization that you wear Liz’s rings on your pinky that did it. I had noticed it in pictures before the slideshow, but thought it was a funky pinky ring. Seeing Gina’s photos was the first time I saw them clearly enough to figure out what they were. And for whatever reason, I guess that made the pain you have endured real for me.

I can’t even begin to imagine what you are going through… but I just wanted to tell you how amazing I think you are. I know you are not the first father to ever lose his wife and the mother of his child(ren), but the manner and timing in which you lost her (it seems) is especially difficult. To have to pick up the pieces to care for a newborn baby… it’s just amazing. And from what you’ve written and the photos you’ve shared… it is so completely obvious how much you love that baby. As you should, but still.

In the photo above, I could not help but see the striking resemblence Madeline shares with Liz. Wow. She is (and Liz was) absolutely beautiful.

Best wishes to you. I’ll be keeping up with you, for sure.

    Heather

P.S. I just have to know–do you pronounce Madeline: “Made-LYNN” or “Made-LIE-N”? I assumed Made-LYNN throughout all my reading (since Madeline was my great-grandmother’s name and spelling). But when I saw Gina refer to her daughter Madeleine (with different spelling), I started to wonder. :)

Your post on Rachel’s blog broke my heart for you, all over again, but the pics of you and Maddie we’re just so uplifiting, that it balanced it out. You hear this a thousand times a day, I’m sure, but she is such a delightful, beautiful little girl, she must make your heart burst with pride. I always here this song and I didn’t really know the words or meaning until I looked them up… I think it fits you and Madeline. It’s by Chrisette Michele – Your Joy

    Walk down the sidewalk
    Staring at your feet
    Wishing my steps were longer
So by your sides I could keep

    Hold your hand much bigger
    Never wanted mine to grow
So I could always fit perfect
    Inside your palms just so

No one loves me just like you do
No one knows me just like you do
No one can compare to the way my eyes fit in yours
    You’ll always be my father
And I’ll always be your joy

    Lay me on your belly
    Nights when Mama wasn’t home
    Lightning made me shiver
And you never let me feel alone

I tried to match your breathing
Beating my little heart against yours
Perfect were the nights we were sleeping
I never want to end what we are

‘Cause no one loves me just like you do
And no one knows me just like you do
No one can compare to the way my eyes fit in yours
    You’ll always be my father
And I’ll always be your joy

One day he’ll come on bended knee
And ask my love away from thee
And when I give my love to him
He’ll always have a place within

One day he’ll come on bended knee
And ask my love away from thee
And when I give my love to him
You’ll always have a place within

No one loves me just like you do
No one knows me just like you do
No one can compare to the way my eyes fit in yours
    You’ll always be my father
And I’ll always be your joy

ugh. terribly hard to get through those anniversary dates. birthdays suck too–just a warning. glad that you were spending the day with family.

and i’m SO glad that your REAL (non-creeper) friends like ben read your blog too. i always wonder how many of yours and liz’s friends keep up daily like the rest of us stranger friends?

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? My first wedding anniversary approaches and we’re talking babies and kids, and as I read your blog and think about my hopes for my life with my husband/best friend/partner in crime, I’m terrified, but also incredibly reassured. I can’t begin to imagine what you’ve gone through, but I can see that you are doing a beautiful job raising your daughter. Add one more name to your list of stranger friends.

Matt, I thought you’d appreciate this… I took my 9 month old in for his well-baby checkup and he’s 30 inches long. I’m a short mama like Liz (59 3/4 inches tall). I spent the rest of the day being ridiculed by people pointing out that my 9 month old was more than half as tall as his mom. Thought of you and Liz every time.

Matt, I’m not sure if I’ve ever commented or not. I read that your wedding anniversary was yesterday. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry and I’m praying for you and Madeline every day. You are an exceptional father and Madeline is a beautiful (and good-natured from the sound of it) baby. From the pictures you have posted of Liz, I think Madeline looks like her Mama. Same pretty, bright eyes and big, big smile.

I truly am sorry that you lost your wife. Thank you for sharing your life with us. We are all better for it. Natalie

Your wedding picture, so beautiful. You can just see how Liz is looking at you with so much joy. Your pictures on Flickr’ from Banaff and they are SO beautiful. Thank you for sharing your new life and old life with us. I look forward to your words each and everyday. They make me realize how much I have to be thankful for.

Now as I cry (and my heart aches even more), I also think of how far you’ve come. My goodness..look at that amazing daughter of yours..you’re an extremely strong person and an amazing father. Keep doing what you’re doing…and thank you again for letting us into your lives. You’re all forever in my thoughts and prayers.

I have followed your blog for quite some time now and never posted a comment. I think you are an amazing dad and are doing such a wonderful job with sweet Madeline. She looks so much like Liz with those big beautiful eyes. I only wish that my husband would take care of my two boys the way that you are doing with Madeline.
The pictures that Gina took are amazing, I just love the last one of you and Maddy, simply precious. Keep writing, you are truly great at it.

PS…I hope you week went well, hopefully looking at that precious face of Madeline smiling up at you took away a little bit of the pain you have endured especially during your anniversary week.

    Matt,
I hope that you were able to remember some of the great times you had with Liz on your anniversary. I’m sure it was a tough day, but you have that beautiful little piece of her by your side (and often strapped to your chest) to help remind you of the love you will always share.
Madeline’s outfit rocks. My 3-year old likes to mix and match patterns in a similar way.

Gina took wonderful photos of you both! Madeline is a little Liz all the way (I do see a few “Matt expressions” thrown in there occassionally).

Hope that you were able to remember all about your wedding day and your beautiful bride on this anniversary. I can imagine that it was a very difficult day for you. Thinking about you and Liz.

    Asalamalaykom,

I hadn’t read what you wrote until just now. I couldn’t. Sometimes I can’t face what has happened to you. It’s too surreal and it makes me uncomfortable to be reminded that we are temporary–not just after 80 years, but whenever God decides. Subhanallah.

The photos. Mashallah. The photos are of another realm than other family photos. Not everyone has these gorgeous images. Maybe you don’t know that. Alhumdulillah.

Your Liz was so photogenic. You know what makes a person photogenic? Being fully alive in the moment. Miss Madeline knows all about this.

One more thing: you are wrong about something, Mr. Matt. And I’m sorry, but I have to correct you—Your Liz did indeed hold Miss Madeline. Your Liz carried her for months. They were closer than close. They shared nutrients and oxygen and love.

See that belly button? NOT YOURS! Miss Madeline’s! That’s the closest she ever was to Your Liz. Kiss it and know the connection. That bellybutton is where life and love flowed from mother to child. Subhanallah for baby belly buttons.
