the other project…

i’ve been working on is

a self-published

book of photographs.

why?

’cause a couple of times each week, i

have someone requesting to

buy one of my photos.

i usually direct them

to the free download feature

of flickr

(yes, all the photos in the book are available for free download somewhere on my flickr page).

then i realized,

“hey! maybe i should sell these…”

so now i am.

as some of you

noticed, there is a fancy

picture link

to the book on the

right side of my blog.

if you click on it, you

will see a 15-page preview.

there are 65 other pages

that the fine folks

at blurb don’t want you to see.

the photos inside the book

were all taken by me.

there are no photos of madeline.

there is only one photo of

liz.

it’s a photo of her shadow.

the books are sort of expensive,

but that’s because the

company who prints/ships them

makes the majority of

the money.

i had the ability to up the

price a little bit,

just so i can have

some money for beer formula.

please don’t feel obligated to buy one.

i would, however, suggest taking a

look at the last page

of the preview.

BTW- I’ve been enjoying watching videos of Maddy. I am a pediatric speech-language pathologist, so I love seeing little ones when they start making sounds, having their first little proto-conversations with Dad. Very cool.

Can I make a suggestion? Or at least ask a question? Is it even possible to take artistic photos of all of the Robot pictures that you have received from kids, etc. and name the book “Robot Love” and sell that photography book too? Maybe even putting that picture of you on the front? Because I would buy the shit out of that book.

What kind of favours did you have to promise the robot in order to allow you to take it’s picture in such a compromising position? What if the robot’s mother sees the picture? What if you get the robot fired from it’s day job? Did you ever think about the future ramifications for the robot? The robot might be stuck in an unwanted life of robot porn from now on. The poor, poor robot.

Ahem. Well, I’m happy for you! I hope you make enough money from your book to buy Madeline a formula bong so she can really chug it down. :)

I was trying to help you figure out the anniversary thing…One thought I had was Liz would have probably been pregnant at that time or just become PG…but probably too early to be tired or having morning sickness. Thought that might have factored in on the anniversary celebration. I knew with both of our kids VERY early on that we were expecting… Anyways thinking of you and checking on you and your precious girl all of the time. I will stop rambling :-) . Banff looks awesome, My brother in law went there on his Sabbatical. Gotta go as my 7 week old will be howling for food in about an hour! Take care of yourself. Oh and to add on the formula thing (you have probably already done this), but ask at her doctor appointments for “samples”. Normally they have a ton! We got 18 cans one time from our nurse.

    Asalamalaykom,

This is a rotten time to have dial-up. Sigh.

The only cool part is that I got to read the comments from everyone else enjoying you enjoying the robot.

It’s kind of that voyueristic cinematic device, where I don’t see the action; I only experience it through others. Makes my mind conjur up allll these weird images. Thank God it isn’t Ramadan yet!

Ok, so I hate that I can’t see the book preview at work. So I’ll have to wait until i get home but I agree with Yosra about reading everyone’s comments and just cracking up at the idea of what this last picture looks like. I’m sure I’ll be snagging one of these books, but I am with everyone else that i would definitely want an autograph. So let me know if we can just mail them to you for your signature. :o ) I’m so excited for you, I think this book will do so well. I hope that it does so well that you don’t have to go back to work and can stay home with Maddy and travel more. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the book. Take care and as always. MATT!!!! I wanted to tell you what my 14 year old daughter told me today. I picked her up at school late morning to take her for an orthodontist appt. Backtracking for a moment, I have shown her your blog (mostly just the photos, because she’s a photography buff) on a semi-regular basis because she really digs your photog. skills. Right now, she says she wants to be a photographer and wants a new and better camera for Christmas. (She has a lower model Canon now which she has deemed to be “crappy”) Anyway, in one of her classes this morning, the kids were asked to write down 3 people (living or dead) that they’d like to meet. She named Orlando Bloom because, well…he’s “hot” apparently and she likes his acting. Next was this guy from the group “Secondhand Serenade”…not sure of her reasoning, but apparently he is awesome (a good writer maybe???). Lastly, she named YOU! Yes….YOU were named on her list of people she wants to meet! I was so amazed and couldn’t wait to get on here to tell you. She must really be impressed by your skills because she has a few photography books and she didn’t want to meet the authors of those! I’m going to purchase your book for her when I get some money put aside!!!!
Anyway, I just thought you should know that.

I don’t know if anyone has suggested it, but you can also sell individual prints on etsy.com, or sell signed copies of the blurb book there too if you set up a seller account – you lose a few percent to them but it’s not too bad, and might be a fun if you want to start a side business out of it!

ps if you don’t know, etsy is basically a huge site with all home-made stuff – everything from vintage kitsch to jewelry to art.

Already have in mind the wrap around style for my very social conscientious 18 y.o. who is also involved with photography. Have you plugged on my very neanderthal style blog…

Also, will be in LA for a very short trip 5-6 hours in mid-October (the 19th to be exact) and asking what to do there when travelling from Escondido? Travelling with my fabulous sister.

    Suggestions? to Mouse1958@ymail.com

Matt, it’s inspiring how you keep plugging away for Madeline and yourself; in many ways, there is no other choice because Liz would want it that way. Ignore the lonely ones who want more from you (you blogged about them), take solace in the ones who have been where you are and keep on inspiring.

    Always,
