6 months ago today
things got really shitty.
i’m gonna try
not to think about
it all day.
(that should be pretty fucking easy).
madeline woke up
with a smile (as usual).
i’m so happy
she doesn’t know
what’s happening.
all she knows is
that she’s got a
a father that hasn’t
stopped staring at her
since the day
she was born
and a whole lot of
family, friends, strangers friends
who care about
her a whole bunch.
so…
this morning,
5:00am, madeline
did something she
hasn’t done in nearly
4 months.
she woke up
and demanded a bottle.
funny.
i go back to work
on oct. 6th
and now is the
time she has
decided to not sleep
through the night.
let’s hope this
doesn’t continue.
the good news is that
she passed out before
the bottle was
empty, which meant
that i actually got a
chance to go
back to sleep.
woke up an hour
later and started picking
up the house.
we have a visitor coming today
so the house
should be somewhat clean.
madeline eventually woke
up and we spent a little
time talking to
each other,
then we headed north on
the 2 to the
210 so we could
pick up auntie anya
and take her to
the airport.
she was heading to
the nyc for auntie maleeda’s
bridal shower.
can’t help but think
about how excited
liz
would have been
for this trip.
fuck.
done thinking about it.
dropped anya off
then picked up
gentle ben and peter
for a quick lunch.
went to our usual spot
near the office
and laughed like we
used to
back in early march.
dropped the guys
back at the office
and went back to
the airport to pick
up our visitor.

came in
to town to hang out
and take some photos
of my baby.
awesome.
she held madeline
as i went about
filling my walls
with memories.
nice to have an assistant,
one that holds a baby,
tells me if the
frames are crooked
and takes photos of
the entire event.
cut my finger open
while trying to
adapt a frame for
my uses.
that sucked.
a while later,
the living room
looked like this:
evening arrived and it
was time to head
up the 5
to meet the so. cal.
contingent of the creeps.
met at a mexican restaurant
where there
was no parking.
i pulled
the stroller
out of the trunk and
nancy laughed as she
came face-to-face
with the robot.
made it inside
and found creepy christa waiting
for us.
we grabbed a table
and waited
for the other
creepy lady to arrive.
madeline demonstrated just
how strong her
legs actually are.
creepy k8 finally
arrived and stole
my baby.
we enjoyed a great dinner
and more
than a few laughs.
the waiter tried
his hand at photography
then we went outside
so christa could meet,
and k8
could have her
second date with,
the robot.
said goodbye and
headed toward my neighborhood.
dropped creepy nancy
off at her hotel
and a sleeping madeline
and i went home.
went to sleep early again.
didn’t want to think
about the day
anymore.
***friday***
madeline woke up
at 5:30 this morning.
no soothing her
back to sleep without
a bottle.
can’t complain though.
she slept through
the night for
4 straight months.
she finished her entire
bottle and went right
back to sleep.
i didn’t have a bottle,
but i was able
to get a short
nap in before
waking up for the day.
spent the morning
smiling at
one another
then staring at the photos
on the walls.
for the first time
since she died,
i really looked
at a photo of
liz.
i’ve seen a ton
of photos of her
over the past 6 months,
but i’ve not looked
at one.
she looks so happy,
so vibrant in that
photo of the
three of us posing
(i can only imagine madeline was posing somewhere inside that pregnant belly)
in the backyard
the day
before she left
the house for the
last time.
i probably shouldn’t have
hung that one
by the door,
but really,
there’s no better place.
sent the robot
to pick nancy up
from her hotel.
we all stopped at
the record store on the
ride to the west side.
that i just
had to have
then we drove
to a lunch
spot near my
old apartment.
madeline sat in
my lap, posing
for the camera
until an older man
caught her attention.
finished our lunch
and let nancy carry
madeline out to
the car.
we drove a couple of
miles so i
could get a haircut
and look cleaned-up
for the thing
happening next tuesday.
got there a little
early so nancy took
some photos
while we waited.
i approved some comments
while madeline
slept in her car seat.
eventually she woke
up and wanted out
of her prison.
it was my turn,
so i handed madeline
over to jennifer, who
had made sure her schedule
was clear,
just so she
could hold madeline.
jeanette cut my hair
and we talked a
lot about
liz.
eventually we were
done and nancy
took an unauthorized photo.
jeanette got a chance
to hold madeline
and took her to
her mom’s favorite spot
to pick up some
of her mom’s favorite stuff.
madeline hung out
while i tried to
pay for my haircut.
jeanette, once again,
would not let me
do so.
we said goodbye
to the ladies,
wishing them well
on their upcoming vacation.
from the west side
we drove back home.
got there in time
to answer the
phone call from madeline’s
doctor’s office.
“we had a cancellation. can you get here in a half an hour?”
i said,
“shit yeah! we’ll be there in 5 minutes”
the guy on the
phone laughed at
my excited response.
i had good reason
to be excited.
madeline’s original appointment
was scheduled for
the day after
i am to return to work.
didn’t want to
have to show up
late on my
second day back,
so i tried to reschedule.
no appointments
until december but they
could put us
on a waiting list
so we could
get in if there
was a cancellation.
so here we are…
on our way to
the doctor thanks
to one of
those elusive cancellations.

Umm… my guess is – 14.55 pounds, 26 1/2 inches. Way to grow, Maddy!
BTW, my husband and I are leaving for Peru in March on a Mission trip. Do you remember if you had to get the Yellow Fever vaccine? The CDC says it isn’t recommended if we are limiting ourselves to the Peru and Cuzco areas, but my doctors are encouraging it. Just now sure?!?! Any thoughts? mrsadlich@yahoo.com

About the sleeping patterns of Madeline….My son Jackson slept 12 hours a night for 4.5 months straight. Once he reached his 6 month mark….all hell broke loose. He was up at random hours of the night. Dr. said she thought it was a combination of teething and a growth spurt. Good news, it will pass. He now sleeps 9-10 hours a night most nights.

This sleep deprived woman simply WILL NOT HEAR you complain about two silly 5 a.m. feedings. If my 4 month old slept half as good as you claim Madeline does, the world would be a better place. Fuck, the economic crisis might solve itself if she would just sleep. That said, 6 months is a pretty typical growth spurt age so she’ll probably be sleeping like an angel again (you lucky bastard) in no time.
I love those smiles behind the pacifiers. You KNOW she must love what she’s looking at to stop sucking long enough to grin.

BTW, Mags slept through the night until a week before I started back to work – it sucked and I felt like a zombie for weeks. Eventually, you get into a routine – but after getting into a routine for the last six months (an unexpected, and unasked for one at that) – going back to work, sleep or no sleep should be doable for both of you. Peace and comfort.

Ok, a quick read through some of the comments and I see alot of the weight I was going to guess, so I have changed it slightly (perhaps it is wishful thinking that you have slipped her a pork product or two and she is a bit more beefy for it…).

My son (7 months) hit a major growth spurt at 4 months and began waking up in the middle of the night again wanting to eat. It lasted a couple of weeks and then all went back to normal.
Wanted to add…he didn’t do that around six months so maybe she is growing quite a bit this month! Once we started solids at six months he slept even longer at night…
My guess is 25.4 inches & 14.5 ounces.

As for her new morning ritual (waking up at 5 am) – my son did the same thing at around 5 months. He acted like he was starving! Sometimes, he would even seem hungry AFTER I would finish nursing throughout the day. That’s when I decided it was probably time to start introducing solid foods, which really helped. Unlike my daughter, he loved them right away. I think he was very ready to begin eating “real” food, though I had planned to wait longer. Just a thought.

Congrats on going back to work. I know it seems wierd to say “congrats” but it’s a step forward, which is an accomplishment any way you look at it.

The only advice I can give is just enjoy every last minute of being a stay at home dad and the work/parenting balance isn’t all that difficult (especially when you have such a fantastic baby like Madeline)! Okay, even though I have a daughter almost exactly the same age I’m terrible at guessing games – my family jokes that I “failed estimations” in high school. But just for fun I’m guessing that Maddy will be 24.9 inches tall and 13.8 pounds.
My daughter is a couple of weeks younger than Madeline and she just went to the doctor as well, so I am going to guess the height and weight that my daughter is because they look about the same.

Hi Matt! I wanted to say that I think Madeline is stunning! I also have a 6 month old, she was born on 3/18. The eating at 5:00 am sounds like her 6 month growth spurt coming on…luckily they do end and you be back to getting a full night’s sleep in no time.
Anyhow, I guess that Madeline is going to weigh 14 lbs 10 ozs and will be 25 and 3/4 inches long.

I’ve been following your blog ever since my girlfriend Jessica Kubel told me all about it. Anyhow, my guess is roughly 15 and 1/2 lbs and 25 inches. Since you will be starting solid foods, I recently found a great baby cookbook that I’ve given to another friend with a baby who is starting solids. Although I guess you hardly have the time to make this baby food, it offers sound advice on different types of food and their nutritional value, etc. and it does have some really quick make food (this can be frozen and apparently lasts a hell of a long time). My 4-year old woke us up last night because he was scared of his stuffed animals – wtf?
In many pictures, we can see the special relationship your friends have with you and your daughter. Does it comfort you that she looks so much like Liz or does it hurt. My oldest son is spitting image of his (late) father and it still, after 6 years, catches me off-guard at times. Don’t let this scare you please! But you do have the cutest daughter in the universe and I am afraid for the poor girl that she will not be allowed to look at the other species till she’s what???? 30:)) ha ha.

Well, I am beyond the allowed deadline (sigh!) but I just wanted to say welcome to your new 2 foot dictator! I have one that is 17 months…also a preemie…and like Madeline, he just keeps shooting up the growth chart. He is now well over 2 feet tall and weighs 26 pounds (he got on the scale himself!) and I like to say he is the cutest, smallest, happiest, bossiest ruler I have ever worked for in my life!
