sunday, monday, tuesday.

(determined to catch up…soon.)

***sunday***

woke up a whole

bunch of times

to check up

on a baby who

wasn’t here.

got up for good

at 6:30.

wanted to go get

madeline, but it

was a little to early

to wake up catherine and

her family.

waited until i heard

from them then drove

to their house

to retrieve my child.

madeline was asleep

when i arrived,

so i talked to

everyone for a bit,

hoping that she

would wake up on

her own.

i waited as long as

i could, but i finally

had to roust madeline

from the crib she

was in so

we could make

it to our next destination.

spent what seemed

like forever packing

up madeline’s possessions

(she was gone fewer than 20 hours…i had no ideashe had so much shit with her).

thanked catherine and

family for taking

such good care of

my child then

headed east to

the sierra madre to

the home of gentle

ben and patient dana.

ben had an idea…

a photo shoot with

the robots that

live in my house.

i packed them up

before picking madeline

up so we were well

prepared for the day.

we hoped to supplement

the robot collection

with a few new

ones but learned upon

arrival in the pasadena

that the toy store no

longer exists.

no problem.

we decided to pick

up lunch instead.

got back to his house

and had lunch

with his family.

after lunch it was time

for some photos.

first, a couple

of madeline

staring.
about to smile.

then it was time

to set the scene…

the robots waited patiently

before the photo shoot.

but then gentle ben’s

artistry revealed itself…

robot last supper.

a robot last supper.

awesome.

we got a few shots

robot last supper.
robot last supper.

before losing one

of the disciples

robot last supper.

enough laughing

and photos,

it was time to disassemble

the whole mess.

drove home

in time to meet up

with adam and ivette.

they spent a few

minutes staring at

my child then we left

for dinner at

the french restaurant

in the atwater village.

we talked a lot

about how things

are going

as madeline slept

in her car seat.

lots of laughs and a

few tears as we

talked about

liz

and all the things

we are missing

because she’s gone.

had a great dinner

and managed to

convince them to have

some dessert.

madeline still a perfectly

still and sleeping

baby, we left the restaurant.

got home, said goodbye

and went

to sleep rather quickly.

we are exhausted

and i am not looking

forward to next week.

lots of stuff to do

before i return to work.

***monday***

monday was a

quiet day.

we celebrated madeline’s

27/52 week birthday

with a little shopping

trip for the items

necessary to start

her on solid foods.

shopping for solid-food eating supplies.
shopping for solid-food eating supplies.

then we went to

pick up some items

in anticipation of

madeline’s first day

of daycare.

we managed to avoid

the saddest clown ever

poor jim.

and drove home,

spending a few

minutes in the front

yard, enjoying something

we don’t see here

very often.

clouds in the los angeles?

madeline fell asleep

before 9:00 so i

cleaned for tomorrow.

went to bed too late.

feel asleep

worried about the

enormous bags

under my eyes.

***tuesday***

another tuesday.

don’t feel like

leaving the house

at all this week,

especially not

today.

really just want to

be alone with

madeline so we can

enjoy our time

together before we

start our new,

separate adventures.

but today

we had something

that we needed

to take care of.

we had a photographer

coming to visit us.

she and her assistant

met us at the

house and then joined

us at the park

for our play group.

kind of a bittersweet

day at the park.

it will be the

last play date for awhile

now that i’m heading

back to work.

i’m gonna miss these

moms (the occasional dads)

and the kids.

i hope to find

a way to regularly see

these folks…

they’ve been such

a huge support

system for the two

of us.

we spent the morning

posing for photos,

and enjoying the

almost unbearable heat

and the company.

the crowd

began to thin

a little after noon so

it was time to

head back to the

house to continue

the shoot.

the photographer took photos all

around the house

photo shoot.
photo shoot.

and at one point asked,

“can we get photos of her eating?”

umm…

well, i’ve never given

her solid food.

hell, her highchair is

not even put

together yet,

but no time like

the present, i suppose,

especially because

there’s a rad

photographer here

to document the

whole thing.

after what seemed

like hours,

her assistant and i

finally got the highchair

put together.

even though there

was someone here

shooting the event,

i couldn’t help

but take a few

shots of my own

of my baby’s

first attempt at

eating (somewhat) solid foods.

waiting...
in her new high chair.

i took my seat

in the chair

next to her

and coaxed her to

open her mouth.

she sucked the soupy

rice cereal from the spoon.

some of it

actually made it

into her mouth,

but most did not.

"what have you done to me?"

after a couple of bites

and a few looks

of confusion,

look at that hair!
i think she likes it.
"what the hell is this?"

she gave me

a shout of (i think) joy.

happy.

i would say

that this was

a success.

the photographer agreed,

telling me she

had all the shots

she needed.

i thanked her and

her assistant and

said goodbye.

can’t wait to

see the photos.

you all may

see them

somewhere someday.

we were exhausted

after the photo shoot,

so we both took

long naps.

evening came and

we spent it

watching our favorite

american league team

lose a one-game playoff

to the hated

rivals from chicago.

it was too much

for madeline to deal with

so she went to

sleep early.

i stayed up thinking

of our future,

not sleeping

until it was almost time

to wake up.

madeline chose this

night to start

sleeping all the

way through the

night once again.

awesome.

WOW what a busy few days you two had! I love the robot last supper shots! Too funny!
Miss Madeline looked to enjoy the cordon bleu cusine you provided, well compared to formula it probably tasted very exotic!

I am sitting here hoping your first day at work is going well and that you and Madeline both have a happy day.
    Keep on Keeping on.

Those pics are adorable. Madeline’s expressions get cuter by the second and I love her fuzzy hair do!

The robots last supper pics seriously had me about to pee my pants! Totally classic!!

Matt, it has been a pleasure to read about your relationship with Madeline. Take my word for it, picking up a child at daycare and seeing the look of absolute joy in their eyes to see you again is a phenomenal feeling. Good luck at work.

So did her tummy tolerate the new stuff, she couldn’t be more photogenic even with rice cereal on her face!

the first pictures of her she is just absolutely adorable . . . those eyes, that smile. She is her Momma’s daughter!

And those pictures of her eating – she reminds me of a baby bird with that fuzz on her head and her little open mouth.

The robot pictures – those are just fucking ridiculous!!

I hate to get to the end of your posts . . . I wanna just keep on reading. I need to be caught up. I need to know how today went. I know it was hard :(

You are doing a fantastic job!! Such a big girl eating cereal! Just wait until she starts feeding herself :-) Hope your first day back to work went smoothly for both of you.

It really is insane the amount of shit a small person needs with her on overnight adventures. Those first couple of pictures of Madeline are absolutely stunning. And the robot photo shoot was hilarious.

I love her facial expression in the first shot at Babies R Us (yes? I recognize those price tags). Is she holding a stuffed elephant?? ROLL TIDE. (Sorry.) (Not really.)

Man, playgroups, and the support you get from them, are awesome. Hope you’re able to keep up with some of y’all’s new friends despite your return to work.

HER HAIR! In the rice cereal pictures! Is THE AWESOME!

Finally, STOP RUBBING IT IN MY FACE that she sleeps through the night. Bastard.

Seriously, I thought about you a lot today. Hope it wasn’t totally horrible. I bet the smile Madeline gave you when you picked her up made up for whatever anxiety you experienced during the day without her. You hear this a lot, but it’s true: you’re fucking fantastic, and she’s not so bad either.

Don’t know if I’ve ever commented before (I think I have)….I’ve been following you guys for awhile (on the blog, not literally)—think about you and pray for you often. I live in the Studio City and am a pediatric nurse practitioner. I think you are doing a fabulous job with Madeline–she is a lucky little girl to have such an awesome dad. I’ve also been meaning to ask—is the French restaurant you’ve been going to in Atwater called Canele? I’ve been wanting to go to that one for a long time. I would love to meet up with you guys sometime. It seems like you have a great support system–but if you ever need one more. And don’t hesitate to bug me with medical/developmental questions–I’d love to help in whatever way possible. Keep up the great work (with the baby and the blog)!

Awesome pics….I especially loved the ones of her eating. Unfortunatley, I missed that 1st bite-of-solid-food milestone with Joey, as my in-laws took it upon themselves to feed our son his first solids while they were babysitting. I was FURIOUS at the time, but have since decided to forgive them…(and hold our next one a little closer).

I’m sure someone’s said this already – but I’m too lazy to read through all the comments LOL. My kids didn’t care for cereal too much unless I put a little bit of baby fruit in it – just enough to flavor it. Then they ate it like crazy!

As a mother of three, I have a secret to share on getting babies to eat solids. Put them in a bouncer seat or car seat instead of a high chair. When the baby is not sitting straight up, the food does not fall out as easily. It makes for more food in the tummy and less on the face. It took two kids for me to learn this trick. (Though you are clearly doing a great job without my unsolicited advice!)

Cereal…yet another milestone! I hope you fared well on your “adventures” yesterday. It will take some time to adjust being away from your beautiful girl, but it does get easier. And I’m sure she will enjoy her new friends at daycare. You are doing a great job…I’m sure Liz is beaming with pride.

Woo hoo for sleeping through the night again just before you start back to work. Gotta love that girl! She knows just what you need, doesn’t she? That first week or two back at work is killer, but you guys will both adjust. She’s such a happy, easy-going baby, she’ll do great at daycare. Wishing you both the best with the transition.

Looks like Madeline did a great job with the solid food! And you did a great job giving it to her. Don’t give up..as long as she gets a taste of it in the beginning, that’s what matters. It took both my girls about 2 months to actually open their mouths for food and eat more than 1 spoonful. Now they’re both great eaters! It was important for me because my husband is a picky eater but I eat everything!
Thought of you many times yesterday and continue to do so today. Hope both days went well for the both of you.

I think you have just about the happiest baby I have ever seen.
Love, love, love the robot photo shoot. Would love to see some more recreations by the robot team.
Hope yesterday (and today) went well for you two.

I enjoyed the Robot last supper. Nice. I personally believe the robot you lost was the betrayer . . .

Madeline’s hair gets a bit fuzzy in the high chair,eh? lol too cute!

Loved the photos of the robots. That was great! Sounds like you guys had a few busy days there!

Awww the first time with Solids. My daughter was fed in her bumbo (we didn’t even have a highchair yet…hehehe) and I think over half of it, ended up under her butt, her sitting in it! hahaah she was just in her diaper and she LOVED it! We have two jack russells so they did the favor of cleaning her up. (well mostly, then I did the rest which including a bath!) But the first few times with solids, they get most on them rather than in their mouth.

Solids will be messy for awhile. Hahah I remember my daughter wearing her chili all over her face and hair hahahaha

You are doing awsome! Hope work is going great and Madeline is enjoying daycare! :)

Matt- I was just recently turned onto your blog by a friend and spent 8 hours reading from beginning to end, crying along the way. You are a remarkable person and an amazing dad. Although I know there is sadness involved, there is also so much joy you share, and you have a great way of doing exactly that.
I just had to comment as I LOVE the pics of Madeline eating, her hair is just perfect standing on end in excitement. Much love from Oregon!

So glad that Madeline’s first eating experience was a good one (the video of her eating is great)….loved the robot photo shoot.

Read this in the paper today and thought of you:

“Earlier this summer, fourth-generation candymaker Joseph Marini III introduced chocolate-covered bacon bon-bons at his stand on California’s Santa Cruz Boardwalk”

I wonder if they are any good? Sending you good thoughts today. :)

Just wanted to give a shout out to your first day of work yesterday and your second today. We’ve been thinking of you both and hoping that Miss M enjoys making new friends and you find some comfort in work. Coming from working parents – the balance is never easy, but boy do we look forward to seeing that baby at the end of the day.

Scary clowns always remind me of that commercial of the baby who buys stock on e-trade or whatever, and with his earnings, hired himself a clown. And totally “underestimated the creepiness factor.”

I missed your first day back to work. I’m sorry. I hope it went okay. I know my first few weeks back to work really sucked and I missed my girl(s) more than ever. Eventually things got okay.

But even the best days at work are just okay till you see your kiddos again. Then they turn awesome and you learn to appreciate the short weekends even better!

I’m lucky now, for the past 2 years I’ve been able to work only 3 days a week and have awesome long 4 day weekends with my girls.

Take care and keep a nice photo of her close to your computer an use on as your desktop wallpaper. It always helps.

    Asalamalaykom Mr. Matt,

Don’t know about you, but I can describe how I’m feeling—see if it matches.

I just feel a bit surreal about so many changes at once, since I’ve been back to work and Mr. Boo has started daycare. Of course, I’m in a new apartment too.

Oh! And no car still–anyone in MN want to donate a car?

We are creatures who crave routine, even if people like you and I love being all wacky with our schedules. I keep telling myself that this will all settle down and I’ll get into the swing of it inshahallah. You will too. Just keep swimming. For me, I don’t have it in me to blog much, even with so many great ideas germinating. I just feel too stretched to squeeze in one more thing. Dont’ you?!

You should have that robot be a guest blogger. Does he have a name? We could have a “Name the Robot” contest, before he appears in People Magazine, or was that YOU?!

I hope the return to work today went okay…or at least that it wasn’t too overwhelmingly shitty and hard. That first day back at work after being widowed, even though it was 6.5 months after Charley died, was really tough, despite that I didn’t even make it through more than 2 or 3 hours at the office.

    Hang in there….

    Hugs,

I have been meaning to post for quite sometime and every time I am just about to hit the post button something comes up. But I wanted to let you know how much you and Madeline have been in my thoughts lately. I hope your first day back @ work and Madeline’s first day at daycare went well!! I can not imagine how long of a day that must have been for you and what an adjustment it must be for you both. I am sure you will settle into your routine soon. fortunately Madeline seems very social, well adjusted and goes to others with ease. Last week, I had to leave Sam for a day while I worked and he would not have it. Evidentally stranger anxiety must have set in that day as he would look at my friend and put his head down and cry!! I left EBM which he used to take from Dad but refused it from a sitter. He cried so bad my husband had to take off work and then Sam refused to eat all but 1-4 oz bottle of BM.Needless to say when I came home -10 hours later he was starving! I was a nanny by occupation, worked at daycares and Montessori and have first hand witnessed that it is much harder on the parent!! By the way I have always wondered -what do you do? I think you work for Yahoo??? !! I know you used to travel a bunch! (sorry curiousity got the best of me-had to ask)

Too bad Madeline wasn’t wearing her Dr. Seuss onesie when we saw you in August, Sam was wearing his that day-would have made a cute picture) Which by the way -the two pictures of her above are amazing. She is so photogenic and beautiful, you take and have some of the most amazing pictures. What an awesome talent to have.

I also wanted to ask you a ? about the babyhawk. But I do not want to bother you now as I know you have so much going on this week. Maybe you can write again when you have time and I will ask you then!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!!

Hope your first day back at work went well! I remembering crying as I walked out of daycare and the whole way to work that first day but it gets easier! My daughter is 18 months old now and LOVES daycare! She has friends she runs to now when we walk in the door and they have taught her so much like sign language and table manners! I think I will always miss not always being around her but now the time we spend together is even more precious!
