matt + maddy in the nyc this weekend.

i’m in a bit of a time warp here with the blog, but i didn’t want that to stand in the way of letting the folks in the nyc area that we’ll be in town this weekend.

at my request, madeline’s bff lauren f. set up a little meeting spot…

here are the details:

friday, oct. 24th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

we’ll be at a place in midtown called social.

it’s on 8th ave. @ 48th st. the closest subways are the 1/2/3 or A/C/E or N/R/W to times square.

there should be a little area reserved for us.

we’d would love to catch up with any strangers friends in the area.

m. + m.

and yes…madeline will be there.

    Matt,

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now… I commented once. I’m Sharon Miller (NanarocksWEEN). I’ve got three grandsons whom I adore (5 years, 3 years, and almost-three-years). My husband and I will be in NYC down at the DoubleTree in Times Sq. tomorrow night… I’ll see if we can make it to the restaurant you’re visiting with friends… maybe I can meet Madeline! And you, of course. We’ll just show up, if we can, and look for Madeline :-)

    Posted 10/23/2008 at 7:38 pm | Permalink

Matt, I don’t know if you remember me.  I lived on Do-Little, right across the street from the house you grew up in.  Well, what a small world it is, I ran into your mom today and she filled me in a bit on you and what you have been through. And I know you have heard it a zillion times, but I am sorry.

When I moved into that house 15 years ago I was  a widow, with an 8 month old son and you were probably about 15 yourself.  My husband had just died in a plane crash when my son was 4 months old.
So, when I say I am sorry for your loss, the loss of your wife, the loss of your daughter’s mother, the loss of your future plans and dreams, I hope you know I have shared that pain.
My son is now almost 16 and 6 feet tall. And I am still a widow. But we have made it through the pain and come out the other side. We still feel the loss everyday, but the pain isn’t there, and in fact there is nothing but joy in my memories. The hardest part is knowing that the children have lost someone who loved them more than anything else in the world, and won’t get to share that love with them.

That is why I love your blog. It is a loving living memory to give your daughter when time has blurred what your reality is now. I want you to know that if you ever want to talk about life, loss, widowhood, parenthood, just email. And I will check in on your blog and the progress of your life.

You are doing a great job and should be proud. Because it doesn’t matter if her shoes match her outfit, or if her hair isn’t brushed, what matters is that you love her. Which she already knows and feels……everyday. I mean isn’t that what life is all about. LOVE.

If I had to do it all over again, knowing the outcome of losing my husband. I would in a heartbeat. Because some people go their whole lives and never get the chance for real love. And at least when he left this world I can say he had no doubts that I loved him with my whole heart. And I am guessing you feel the same about your wife.

So, if there is one good thing I can do, have, and feel in this world, it is to share love with the ones you love. As the lyrics in the Queen song say, “one year of love is better than a lifetime alone”. Because, as you know, they can be taken from you in a minute so live for this moment right now, today.

    Happy Birthday Matthew,
    How did I know?
When my son was born I looked at the little boy and wondered how will he grow?
When he first walked how will the legs carry him?
When he went off to first grade I wondered how will he learn?
When he graduated from high school I wondered will he go to college?
When he met Liz I wondered will this be the one?
When he went off to college I wondered how will they see each other?
When he moved to California I wondered would he find a good job?
When they got married I wondered can it get any better for 2 people?
Whne they bought a house I wondered does this mean a child?
When Liz passed away I wondered what will he do with his beloved wife?
When he took Madeline home from the hospital I wondered can he do this?
He answered, not with voice but with his love, devotion, carring and integrity that he shares with everyone he ever met.
    So how did I know?
    I just did!!!!

    Love Dad

You’re a great dad because you had a great teacher in your own dad! Happy Birthday! If it wasn’t for lovely work (read with lots of sarcasm), I would have taken the train to the NYC for the social last night. Can’t wait to see the pictures and the stories behind the pictures.

I agree that your Dad’s comment was so awesome. I have always enjoyed reading his comments as they come straight from the heart.

    Happy Birthday Matt!

Now I know why you are so fantastic. You have it in your genes.

That was the most awesome birthday message from your father that it made me cry.

I hope you are enjoying yourself despite the shitty weather, both literal and emotional.

    Asalamalaykom Mr. Birthday Boy,

LOL, I’m always late with well wishes!

Maybe the tricky part about celebrating life isn’t the day everyone else says should feel special. It’s the day after…when you have to keep going through the mundane and making it into something to cheer about.

You have the ability to make the most of the life God gave you. Keep finding the reasons to be thankful for the year behind and hopeful for the years to come inshahallah.

    Kullu sana enta tayabba!

Hey Matt…it was really cool meeting you and Mad on Friday. How was Broken Social Scene? As I made it known, I am sooo jealous. I tried to get tickets but alas was unlucky in my endeavor! Hope Maddy doesn’t miss biting my hand for twenty minutes haha..she was a lot of fun. I’m going to be out in L.A. for a possible radiation treatment (boo cancer) and/or getting drunk and seeing shows with my cousin. Perhaps I’ll run into you and Maddy then. Take care!

I was listening to Minnesota Public Radio this AM and I thought of you when they were talking about the weather and said, “and in THE northern Minnesota, the temps are going to be…”. No, they didn’t say “the northern half” or “the northern part”, they said “the northern Minnesota”. Maybe the MPR folks are Matt and Madeline fans too.

I (and I’m sure thousands of others) am looking forward to hearing about your adventures over the last week (or is it two weeks now?). Hope Madeline enjoyed her 2nd visit to the NYC.

Wow. I saw you on Rachael Ray show today and just want to tell you what a wonderful thing you are doing for so many people by sharing your life and most beautiful daughter Madeline with all of us. You are such an inspiration. Some one said on your blogs to live each day and you really are. Thank you for all the help you are giving others. You are a very special man and Liz will always be near both of you. I wish you joy and peace in this lifetime. You are doing an incredible job as a father. Yes, Medeline is number 1 and she will be for the rest of your life. She is the most precious little baby I’ve ever seen. I will pray for both of you for the rest of my life. Thanks again for sharing your little girl with us. You are an amazing man.

My sister was watching Rachel Ray and recognized Liz in the hospital bed and called me right away. When we say it we had to make sure it was indeed Liz. We swam with Liz growing up what a spit fire she was and it looks like Maddy is the same. Your story has made me stop and think what is really important in life worring about money all the time or spend time with your wonderful husband and your 4month old daughter. The answer is very easy know. My daughter is number one in my life too. I can’t believe how fast they grow hope. I give you soooooooo much credit for being a single parent. I don’t think I could do it. You are an amazing super aka super Mom. Thank you so much for sharing this story with us all.
