Is there still a chance prop 8 can pass? From what I am reading there is still 5% of precincts not counted in California, and its only behind 403,572. Thats a pretty high number but depending on the precincts it CAN happen right?

I just wonder about the mindset of people against it, saying it would ruin the sanctity of marriage. Its THEIR marriage, worry about your own and the sanctity will be just fine.

Yay, I look forward to a new era. I’m a little shocked that 8 passed. I thought we Californians were more accepting now than when we vote to ban gay marriage more than a decade ago. It seems because I live in the SF Bay Area that I would think so, but it’s different elsewhere in he state. It’s disappointing. If you ever have gay friends, they’ll let you know being gay is not a choice, just let being straight really isn’t. That shouldn’t preclude them from having loving relationships and getting married, if that’s what they want. Some gay relationships are better than some straight ones. But there are those whose religious viewpoints don’t like word marriage for anything beyond a man and a woman.

Sorry about Prop 8. But I am still pinching myself over Obama’s win. Someday, you can tell Madeline that you voted for the first black President! (And by then, you can tell her about all of the things in the world that she takes for granted that Obama did for us.)

I thought of Madeline, my teenage son, and my daughter in the Army when I voted for Obama. He not only put a crack in the ceiling, he blew off the whole roof. We can now work hard to make this world better for Madeline.

She makes me smile, by the way. When I need a lift, I come look at her photos, and when I think my life is hard, I cry with you.

I know its not fun to read “parenting advice” from some stranger on the web, but…

I just want you to be aware that since she cant stand yet by herself, she could topple over in a heartbeat, ~way~ too fast for you to catch her (especially with a camera in your hands!).

You really should’nt let her stand alone on the couch.
I’d hate for her to hurt herself :(

Hi Matt and Madeline! I haven’t posted to your blog in forever but have been a faithful reader. I had to post this for you, though Matt to let you know how popular you are, LOL (as if you didn’t already know, duh). My husband and I took a cruise last week to parts of Mexico and I brought with me “I’m a flower in the garden of awesome” shirt, which I love to wear everywhere I go. So we’re there like 7 hours inland from Mazatlan in some tiny little village in the Sierra Madre mountains, where you’d think nobody even HAS the internet, let alone can speak english (oh how naive I was, LOL) and out of nowhere comes a woman running over to me and saying, “That’s MATT’s daughter! From California!” in broken English. We didn’t know each other but had a great smile and hug and both wished you well (though you weren’t there to hear it, LOL) and went our separate ways. So – even in remote parts of who-knows-where…. people are reading your story and wishing you well. Just thought you’d like to know (plus it was great to venture out of the armpit of America!!!) :-)
    All the best –

One of my friends said, “I used to think that HOPE and LOVE went together. I have now seen Hope and Hate holding hands in California.” I thought that was well said.
    Yea Obama! Boo prop 8.

I am a Dutch woman living in Canada. I am happy for all of us. The world is waiting with open arms for a new America..where everyone gets treated equal. I truly hope for a prosperous future for the USA and for all of us..no more war and more understanding. And it’s time to start healing the economy. And as always…Madeline put a smile on my face! She is absolute precious.

    Asalamalaykom Voters,

@Katherine: the first election in which I involved by little girl was Sen. Paul Wellstone vs. Norm “Chicklet Teeth” Coleman. We were overjoyed to see Sen. Wellstone at the State Fair that year. Since it was her bday, he sang to her. Subahanallah! Weeks later he was dead and I screamed at work and had to leave early to pick up my little girl.

Hope didn’t die with Wellstone. This election re-ignited my altruistic beliefs.

I am sorry that Prop 8 passed. Though Islam doesn’t endorse homosexuality, I don’t need to push that belief on anyone else. America is built on personal freedoms and we better all be getting equality. Afterall, I shouldn’t be the only one allowed to screw-up legal monogamy.

As for Miss Madeline sleeping…bliss…pure bliss.

You know, my friend and co-worker from Costa Mesa said it rather bluntly while we were discussing the election (yes she is straight with children) and Prop 8 said something that was just cemented in my head when speaking with my father just now.

It WILL happen, we will all be equal one day, yesterday was a HUGE step. BUT, the conservatives are generally aging, and they will die off (and yes she said she knows that sounds bad, but its true too). From Gen X down, we generally are live and let live and are all for equal rights. We for the most part are not racist, nor do we hate (I am not talking EVERYONE here).

Everyone will be able to love the way they want someday, everyone will be able to be free to do what they want unless it effects society.

My Dad’s stance on Prop 8 is what the vote went, and he thinks it will happen in Mass and CT too, (I dont). He couldnt come up with ONE argument how someone else’s marriage affected his except that it made it a joke. He said it would destroy the sanctity of marriage, but he is staunchly Catholic. When I asked about people that arent religious and get a civil marriage how it effected his, his answer that it would make his marriage less.. Um I forgot the word, but basically less respectful for the sanctity thing again. Basically a round and round. In the end he just said that God didnt want it that way and if gay people married that would be an insult to his.

As the conservatives die off (not being mean here) I think that we will be more accepting of what equal rights means.

BTW, he never came up with an answer as to what rights would be taken from him if gay people were allowed to marry. Go figure. I still love him!

While I am thrilled by Obama’s win (getting Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio is HUGE) I am saddened by the Prop 8 in California. Why is my marriage (if we could) to my partner of 7 years the downfall of the US?

Matt, my cousin told me about your blog and I have been totally sucked in. My heart goes out to you — but I know you are a great dad and that Madelinie will know what a wonderful mom she had. If you are ever in the DC area you have a place with us.

    Asalamalaykom,

Either my first comment didn’t really go through or Mr. Matt has finally decided to bump me off the comments.

@Katherine: What I wanted to remember was my daughter’s first political knowledge and that was with Sen. Paul Wellstone. She got to meet him at the State Fair, and since it was her birthday, he sang to her. Subhanallah, in a few weeks, he was gone.

My hope for political dreams becoming realized kind of died too that day, but they have been resurrected with President-elect Barak Obama. Alhumdulillah.

As for Prop. 8, I’m sorry that it passed. Islam does not sanction homosexual unions but that doesn’t mean I have to push that belief on anyone else. As Americans, we should want the same rights for our neighbor that we have ourselves. Equal opportunity for screwing up a legal marriage as much as me, I say! I mean, it’s not like the U.S. divorce rate says that we hetros are keeping the sanctity of marriage all that well. Let’s see what our counterparts can do with it :) I wish them well (I really do).

    And Miss Madeline…bliss…pure bliss…mashahallah.

I am more bummed about Prop 8 not passing than my candidate losing. I am thrilled to see history in the making and know God is in control so no matter who was President we will be taken care of. Nice to meet another believer in equal rights for ALL!

it’s incredible to me that Madeline will live her whole life in a time when Americans vote for a candidate, not a black or white candidate. add that idea to the garden of awesome!

We will continue to wear our Robots for Obama shirts happily in St. Paul, MN! My take on it was that Obama is so great, even robots support him. I am a huge supporter of Obama, but I also am thrilled to bits to have Michelle as our first lady. Imagine how fantastic that’s going to be!

I am so disappointed in our state for passing Prop8. Here our country makes history by electing Obama, but then we (well not me) tell a whole class of people sorry you don’t get to marry. Sad.

@ Becca – on a blog I read (which is funny as hell, Y’all should read it, its called Why Mom Drinks Rum) she had the funniest post today. She is Candadian, but loves Obama too btw.

But here is a quote of her post today..

“Hubby pointed out over the bathroom sink….after dripping water and tooth paste down my arm….that,

“Hey, I think he plagiarized that line!”
“What the fuck are you talking about? Can you get that IN your mouth please? Ugh!”
“Whatever…it’s just water. That whole ‘Yes we Can!’ line. He totally stole that from Bob the Builder.”
    “Impeachment is imminent.”
“Your not nice in the mornings.”
    “Clearly.”"
