From: Janeen Holmes
To: Matt Logelin
Subject: from Janeen at My Stuff Bags Foundation
Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2008 13:18:19 -0800

Hi Matt,

It is with a heart brimming with gratitude that I write to you today! First, I thank you and Single Minded Women sincerely for making My Stuff Bags Foundation your charity of choice for your special charity registry collection in honor of Liz and baby Madeline. Gifts of clothing and toys and other great “stuff” are pouring in for the abused, neglected and abandoned children we serve across America! They will become a part of individual My Stuff Bags for these children who so often enter shelters and foster care with nothing of their own. These donations are so important and so very welcome as we strive to send out the message to these children, through My Stuff Bags, that lots of people care about them. Even more important, Matt, is that you and Single Minded Women are helping spread the word about the plight of our country’s abused children; more than 300,000 are rescued each year from terrible situations and enter foster care. It’s unbearable that they should also have to suffer the indignity of shuffling from placement to placement with little or nothing of their own. I’ve always been convinced that people would do something about that if only they knew. Thank you for being a part of getting the My Stuff Bags message out.

Now for some very exciting news! We received a message just this morning that My Stuff Bags Foundation will receive a grant of $25,000 from an anonymous donor in honor of Matt, Liz and Madeline Logelin! Cash funding helps us purchase the My Stuff duffels, toiletries and toiletry bags and ship the My Stuff Bags across the nation. This grant will have such an impact and make it possible for us to reach so many more children!

I see that you live in the Los Angeles area; please consider calling us and coming to visit our headquarters and Volunteer Center here in Westlake Village, CA someday, and please bring little Madeline. We would all like to thank you personally for your support of My Stuff Bags.

Best wishes for Happy Holidays,

Janeen

to the anonymous donor…

$25,000?

are you fucking serious?

thank you so very much.

you are an amazing human being.

and thanks to everyone else who has donated or plans to donate…you don’t have to donate $25,000 or even $25. $1 goes a long way.

please consider donating to this charity...

Holy SHIT! I have never cursed on here before, but it seemed fitting under the circumstances! Whoever the anonymous donor was, all I can say is “WOW, you are a wonderful person!” and thanks to you Matt, for getting the word out there about that organization.
PS…Madeline is growing up so fast….what a doll!

Oh, so they got my check?

    Kidding.

Anyway, I’m so, so happy for all those kids.

And even happier for you, Matt. Because apart from Maddy, I’ll bet not much has come close these past almost-nine months of making you feel as good as reading that email did. Life handed you a ginormous sucky lemon and you turned around and quenched a lot of thirst. So much to be proud of, thankful, and happy about in that. :-)

To the anonymous donor: You fucking rock. Giving $25k is awesome, for sure — but let’s face it, it also probably didn’t cause you financial hardship. In my book (and I believe, the Talmud) it’s that you did it anonymously that takes it to a whole nuther level. Such goodness. A blessing on all your houses — literally and figuratively.

I’ve been reading your blog for months but have never posted a comment.

Just posting to say that I will be donating several beloved childhood books to My Stuff Bags instead of buying gifts this year. Everyone I know is either asking for very expenisve gifts, or nothing at all. I love the idea of buying a favorite childhood book for someone who may not have access to any at all (Misty of Chincoteague, FTW!).

    Matt, that is so amazing.
I actually just talked to them yesterday because I have a donation to make of a lot of Connor’s things that I’ve never even used. They will take items that are out of the package as long as they are new. I’m sending over a bunch of new newborn clothing that my bruiser never wore, plus towels, washcloths, blankets and toiletries.
I am just amazed that in this tough economy someone has opened their heart so much as to give such a generous donation. The human spirit (And Liz’s) triumphs again

You are so right Matt. A dollar, or twenty five grand….

My late daughter had a spot on belief.

She never missed a donation bucket, reminding me that if every person who passed it donated a dollar, the cumulative effect would be awesome.

So, you know what? I hardly have a buck…Christmas this year is canceled at our house. But, I am off to donate a buck, and challenge all of us that think it won’t make a difference to try it….together it will.

Sometimes, when life gets difficult, it’s easy to think that the world is a completely shitty place and that all people suck, but I’ve always known that really wasn’t true and this PROVES it. Thank you, anonymous donor, whoever you are! You are amazing. So are you Matt, for helping to make a difference as well through your blog.

Recently I heard a story close to yours which happened 5 minutes from my home:

And I immediately thought of you as well, as I have been looking at your blog once a week for your updates. You have done so much for this group and it’s wonderful that everything inspires you to do so much for so many other people. Maybe with time, this individual may find some hope as well. Cheers to you, your daughter and to the many people who care about your welfare as well as those who are in similar situations. What a wonderful donation whoever it was, by the way!!

Wow…$25,000!!! As a teacher I see kids in my class whose families can’t afford to buy Christmas gifts or clothes that fit appropriately, but at least these kids have the love of their families. To think of kids who’ve been neglected, abandoned, abused…it just breaks my heart. Matt, while she may not be able to demonstrate it now, the lessons you are teaching Madeline will be so valuable to her as she continues to grow. Madeline is standing there with such happiness in her sparkling eyes (not to mention her hot dress).

She has no idea the pain you feel, Matt.

She doesn’t know she lost her mother.

She only knows the secure and awesome life that you are providing her.

She will understand more when she’s older.

She will have the blogs, photos, videos, get-togethers, travels, family, friends/strangers, charities, and your “reflections”

to know her mother and how much you loved her and how much you both love Maddy.

As has been said so many times,

you could have shriveled and you probably will feel like it sometimes for a long time to come.

    But, still you don’t.

And that is why you rock, and we can all see it in Maddy’s eyes.

    Keep on!

Matt, hi, there. I just found your site through a friend of a friend (a young mother with two very young children) who is seemingly losing a battle with cancer and is attempting to find some solace in thinking of widowers (and associated children) who are somehow making it through. Just wanted to let you know that I have officially added you to my unofficial list of people I think about every day. I will probably read your blog regularly, although I will probably post infrequently. (Look up “lurker” in the dictionary, and you’ll see me.) Thank you for writing such compelling entries, for being a father any kid would be lucky to have, and for helping me to be more grateful for my day-to-day.

  224. Posted 12/14/2008 at 9:37 am | Permalink

    Asalamu Alaykom Givers,

We all give. Matt gave by putting this charity on his blog. Miss Madeline Island gave by looking gorgeous from her sparkling eyes down to her toddler cankles. If you put a positive comment on this blog, you gave.

To the Anonymous Donor: God knows the reason why you gave. May your prayers be answered and may you feel the peace you wish for.

To the Other Donors: Muslims are asked each year to give 2.5% of their excess monies and investments to charity. It’s one of the five pillars of Islam. For every extra thousand you have, you pay $25. I mention this because it is our belief that God judges you based on percentage not by the biggest total.

This donor who gave $25K, (may God reward), he or she might have actually gotten LESS rewards than the person who gave $100 if that $100 was a higher percentage of the donor’s limited wealth. See?

But Matt…now here’s the coolest part….Matt, because he is the one who started the good deeds rolling…Matt gets reward from God for every single person who gives. He gets the reward from the $25K AND the $100. He even gets it from the person who wishes they could send in money, but truly can’t swing it!

    Alhumdulillah.

This is absolutely beautiful. I have a friend who lost her mother as a young child…her father shut down. It was a lonely life for both of them. I’m sure there are times you want to shut the door and hide, but by keeping that door open you have helped and inspired more people than you could have ever imagined…and they do the same for you I’m sure. Liz is proud and Maddy has the coolest Dad ever. $25,000 donor…you’re the BOMB!
