monday morning.
5th day of the
new year.
we woke up,
rested and ready to
get back into
our routines.
maddy slept in
her clothes from yesterday
(yes, sometimes i don’t change her into pajamas before she goes to bed…does that make me a bad father?)
and still looked
cute the next morning
so i left her in
the same outfit.
(yes, i sometimes she wears the same outfit two days in a row. does that make me a really bad father?)
we got out the
door really fast
and made it to
daycare in record time.
i brought a
smiling maddy inside
and lupe said,
“she’s so happy to be here! i thought she wouldn’t want to be here after being away for so long!”
yeah. me too.
but she was thrilled
to be back
amongst her friends.
i said goodbye
and went to work.
tough to concentrate
after so many
days away, but i
i got a call
in the morning
that gave me something
to look forward to.
katrina, my old friend
from grad. school
called to let me
know that she is
in the so.cal
and hoped to take
us out for dinner.
i assured her
that we had nothing
to do, so
we planned to
meet later that evening.
the rest of the
day went by
fast, and soon
enough it was time
to pick maddy up
from daycare.
she was on the
floor trying to
crawl when i walked in.
i said,
“hi maddy”
and she spun
around to see me,
liz
sized smile on her face.
and there were
those teeth…
i can sorta
see them.
i was so scared
she was gonna
look weird with teeth,
like maybe she
wasn’t going to
be as cute
anymore, but i think
the teeth are actually
going to enhance
her beauty.
we headed home
and i tried my
best to pick
up the house
before katrina arrived.
no luck…the cab
dropped her off and the
doorbell rang before i even
got one suitcase moved
into another room.
katrina came in,
carrying a bag of
groceries and a
gift for maddy.
she offered to cook
me dinner, which
was sweet,
but i told her that
we better go
out to dinner
because all of the
tables in my house
are covered with stuff.
she took one look
at the kitchen and
dining room tables
and agreed that
going out would
be a better option.
before dinner, we
spent a little time
catching up
(we haven’t seen each other in a few years)
and talking
about the past.
she insisted that
maddy open her gift,
and we played with
it while katrina
took some photos.
then it was
time to head out.
we decided to hit
the indian restaurant
in the los feliz.
maddy slept through
the entire meal,
giving us a
chance to finish up
our conversation.
we talked about
a lot of things.
the sociologist in her
had so many questions
about the blog
and the community that
has formed around it.
we talked a lot about
liz,
and how maddy
and i are doing.
after dinner, we dropped her
off at union
station and headed home.
went to bed
around 1:00am.
fell asleep satisfied
that i got to
catch up with
an old friend.
tuesday.
day six of the new year.
we woke up early
and i actually put
maddy into a
different outfit today,
an outfit that
made me beam
with pride.
i layered a onesie
under a dress,
with a pair
of jeans under
the dress.
(what the fuck? i can’t believe i just wrote that, let alone did it.)
i’ve said it
before and i’ll
say it again…
i was not cut out
for this fashion shit,
but for
liz,
and madeline,
i’m doing my best.
we went to
our respective offices
and spent our day
doing our work.
during my work day
i got an
e-mail from someone,
inviting madeline
to an extremely
cool event this saturday.
(details to follow).
i called the woman
to accept the invitation,
and thanked her
for the incredible opportunity.
later i picked
maddy up and we
went home.
we spent the evening
on the couch,
reading and listening to
some music.
maddy’s talking evolved
from “da da da da”
to “ma ma ma ma” tonight,
which made me cry.
this is fucking hard.
she fell asleep around
8:30 and i set out
to do a little writing.
went to bed
about 2:30,
worrying again how
i’m gonna explain all
of this to
our daughter someday.
wednesday.
7 days into 2009.
the day started
off great.
i got maddy dressed
and we worked on
her xylophone playing,
and by xylophone playing,
i mean eating the mallet.
we laughed and smiled together
before heading out
the door.
i made it to
work and in my
inbox i found
an e-mail from our lawyer.
(creep becky’s husband).
a lawyer
working pro bono on
behalf of
the liz logelin foundation.
the e-mail
let me know
that he had filed
some of the necessary
paperwork to get
this thing off the ground.
wow.
after months
of discussion and
hard work by creeps
around the world,
(and very little help from me),
our non-profit org.
is taking shape.
soon we’ll be
finalizing some fundraising
events, getting a
website up and
running, and organizing
a big event for
the second annual walk/run
in sept.
(lots and lots of details to follow as they become available).
and to see my
name listed as “president?”
scary.
(and yes. it’s too early to call for my impeachment).
within months we should
be able to start
helping young families that
have lost a mother or a father.
thanks to everyone
who has helped
so far, and thanks
in advance to
all the folks
i’ll be putting
to work in the future.
feeling great,
i got back to work.
at 1:30 i got
a call from
maddy’s daycare.
“is this madeline’s dad?”
“uh, yeah. this is.”
“madeline has thrown up 5 or six times in the last hour.”
“shit. i’ll be right there.”
i ran out the door,
as fast as i
could, got to my
car and realized
that i didn’t
have my keys.
fuck!
i never forget my keys.
why now?
ran back in,
got them and
made it back
to my car.
i’m not sure i
touched a step
on my way down,
up or down the stairs.
got to the daycare,
and found maddy in
lupe’s arms.
madeline looked really pale,
but she started smiling
and laughing when she
saw me.
i grabbed her from
lupe and as soon
as i did,
there was a waterfall
of green vomit
spewing from her mouth.
“green beans”
lupe said.
that’s the first time
i’ve seen her
throw up like that.
i was scared.
i asked a bunch of
questions, got to
the car and started
making some phone calls.
called her pediatrician’s office.
fuck.
closed for lunch.
i started to
feel overwhelmed.
i called sonja, the
pediatrician i don’t pay,
and she gave me
the info i needed.
i felt overwhelmed again.
how am i going
to pick up the
pedialyte and the
other stuff i need
with a baby projectile vomiting?
this is where
our partnership
would have come in handy.
liz
could have run to
target while i held
maddy and cleaned
up vomit with a towel
(thought…do shamwows soak up vomit?).
or it could have
been the other
way around.
but it’s not,
and i have to figure
this shit out
all on my own.
(another reminder of how difficult single parents have it).
and here come
the tears again.
tears because i’m overwhelmed,
tears because i miss
liz.
tears because i
have no idea what
the fuck i’m doing.
two things helped…
first, i got a call
from my friend cara
in the nyc.
she helped calm
me down and reassured
me that i could do this.
second, thankfully i have
a wonder child…
she fell asleep right
before the exit for
our house, so i decided
to make a quick
stop at the store
so i could pick
up the supplies we needed.
made it half way
through the shopping
trip before she
woke up.
i was on the phone
talking to the nurse
at the pediatrician’s office.
oh shit
i thought…
but there’s that
smile again.
she seems fine.
we left the store,
made it a few
blocks before i heard
her vomiting again
shit.
do i pull over?
do i try to mop it up
while i drive?
i pulled over ’cause
it sounded like
she was choking.
i made sure
she was fine before
getting back in
the driver’s seat and
heading home.
she threw up
two more times when
we got in the house,
then she slept
for an hour.
she woke up happy
and i started following
the instructions i got
from everyone re: the pedialyte.
she took a little
the i waited for
her to vomit.
nothing.
a little more.
vomit time?
still nothing.
another nap and then it
was time for tons
of that liquid.
she drank 4 oz
and then we both
took a nap.
we repeated this
cycle until 11:00,
then went to
bed for the evening.
i hoped that
we’d be able
to sleep through the
night, but figured
that was impossible.
thursday.
8 days in.
i woke up at
4:00am, checked on
maddy and she
was still asleep.
i went back to
sleep until 6:30am
when i heard
her talking away.
i pick her up
and gave her another
bottle full of pedialyte.
she drank it
like it was her
favorite stuff
in the world.
all morning she has
alternated naps
and bottles full
of pedialyte.
as i write this, she
is in her bouncer,
bouncing away.
we go to see
the pediatrician at 3:00
today, her regularly scheduled
9-month appointment.
i think you
know what that means…
well, of course it
means that there’s
another guess the weight
and height contest.
i’ll send a prize
(a copy of my current fav. album or book, maybe both)
to the person who
gets closest
to the actual height/weight
without going over.
you have until 11:59pm (pacific time) friday, january 9th.
to get your guess in.
in the mean time, here’s a little help…
last check-up she
was 24.5 inches tall
and weighed 13 lbs, 13 oz.
(most recent growth chart below):
(sorry for the lack of metric conversion…international readers using the metric system can submit your guesses in metric units and i’ll convert them).
so get your guesses in…
we’re off to the doctor’s office.

15 lbs 2 oz
26 inches
It sounds like you did everything right for Madeline, as usual. Way to make it through Pukefest 2009!
oh boy – the line – i layered a onesie under a dress, with a pair of jeans under the dress – killed me, you definitely got this style thing down. the last picture is PRICELESS – and maddy looks pretty damn healthy to me, hopefully it was just a 24h thing.
as for my guess, i’m gonna say 17lbs 10oz and 26 1/4in.
Now you are in for it. Shamwow’s up the ass will be arriving at your door.
Guess: 29.15 h
16.40 w
I will guess….27 inches, 19 lbs. And I LOVE that awesome dress/jeans/onesie combo. super cute. I am glad she is feeling better…the pukey illnesses are the worst!
Oh Matt – I hope you and Maddy are doing better – and your doc visit goes well. Thank goodness for pedialyte! I still remember when my middle one was about Maddy’s age and had a bout of projectile vomiting – he didn’t keep a thing down for two days. Finally I had to sit with him and spoon feed him a teaspoon full of pedialyte every minute for two hours so it would stay down (it worked).
As for Miss Maddy’s weight and height – my guess is 16 lbs, 1oz for the weight (taking into account the few ounces she chucked up today) and 25.75 inches for the height.
16 LBS 2 OZ and 28 inches
matt you are doing great!! I remember when I was a first time mom and my son did the same pojectile thing when my husband was out of town for the weekend!! Totally disgusting, but for some reason I didn’t gag because it was MY son, and not someone else’s.
She’s so dang cute I just want to eat her.
::thinking I’m way off on my inches..::
17.8
25.2
Ok, I’m going with 17.25 pounds and 26.9 inches tall.
It’s always sort of disheartening how excited they are to go back to daycare. You’re glad she’s so happy there, but seriously, can’t she pretend to miss you a little?
Sorry to hear about the vomiting, but glad Maddy is on the mend. 25 1/2 inches long, 15 lbs. 3 oz.
Whoa…could I be first?
Matt, you’re an awesome father. Liz would be so proud of you and everything you’ve accomplished with Madeline. She’s growing like crazy. I’m really looking forward to the memorial foundation; it’s a wonderful way to honor Liz and her memory, and it’s a FANTASTIC way to help out young families with just one parent. What a brilliant idea.
16lbs.
26 inches tall.
I suck at this but I’ll give it a shot.
28.5 inches
17.25 pounds, thinking that the recent vomit episode might have knocked off a few ounces.
Barfing babies suck no matter how many parents there are, trust me. It makes me giggle that she was so happy during being so sick!
My guess: 16 lbs, 14 oz
25.75 inches
Very cute outfits…you definitely have a knack for the trendy layered look. I’m going to guess 25.75 inches and 14 pounds, 8 ounces.
Oooh, poor sick Maddy!
Okay, my guess:
Height: 25.25
Weight: 15.95
I love the onesie/dress/jeans outfit. It’s adorable. And the outfit today, too (especially the t-shirt).
My guess is 25.75 inches and 16 lbs., 5 oz.
First guess ever, and I’m feeling PRETTY good about it.
16 pounds, 6 ounces
26 1/2 inches
We have let the twins sleep in their clothes from the day before on numerous occasions. I don’t think that makes us bad parents…I consider it recycling.
My guesses:
Height: 25.5 inches
Weight: 16 lbs 3 oz
Hope the puking has stopped!
14 Pounds 6 ounces
25 inches
16lbs 10oz
The last picture is a keeper for sure! Love it! I’ve got 5 kids and the vomitting thing never gets any easier.
That feeling of “what the hell do I do now?” is totally normal. I remember all those “firsts” with my daughter. One of them even ended with an IV and a night in the hospital. She was not a fan of Pedialyte. However, during the process one of my husband’s co-workers suggested layering towels under where she was sleeping or where we were sitting. That way, if she threw up we just peeled off a towel, and were good to go. No changing of sheets, couch cushions, etc., and laundry can be done later. The throwing up in the car, you just feel so helpless. I think we’re still getting puke out of the knobs.
My guess — 16 lbs 2 oz, 26 1/4 inches.
You are doing an awesome job, Matt! Love the outfit you put together – your thoughts made me laugh!!
My guess:
16lbs 4oz
25.5 in
Good job dad…the puking is the worst but she seemed to do well.
My guesses:
26.5 inches
15lbs 3oz
P.S. LOVED the jeans under the dress. My 9 year old does that and it’s super cute. Again, way to go dad!
i.
adore.
that.
shirt!
matt, just the fact that you worry about being a good father makes you a great father.
great job Matt … I love how you dress her … you are doing a great job and Maddy is becoming a little fashionista!! I hope she is doing well I think her height is around 26.10 and her weight around 19.21 pounds
15lbs 7 oz and 26.25 in. I hope that Maddy is feeling better. Also I love the dress with the jeans soo cute. Enjoy the dresses now because you may have to put them away for awhile when she starts crawling.
Congrats on surviving Projective Vomiting 09!
My guess:
27.2 inches
16 lbs 3 oz
16# 7oz and 25 3/4 inches
15lbs 6oz & 25 1/4″ or maybe a few less ounces due to the vomiting! Glad to hear she is feeling better and looking as gorgeous as always. Can’t wait to see those chompers!
You are a great father, Matt. My personal philosophy is that if the outfit is still clean after one wearing, it goes back in the drawer. Otherwise, I can’t keep up with the laundry.
You wondered how you’d ever be able to explain to Maddy what happened to her mother, I’d say that this blog would be perfect. (Older as in, not 5, but 18). In the meantime, keep on doing what you’re doing, answering questions as you go. Your love for your daughter is practically tangible, she will be able to get through it all with you by her side.
Oh, and I’m going to go with 16lbs and 26in.
25.6 inches
15 lbs. 3 oz.
“what the fuck? i can’t believe i just wrote that, let alone did it.” hahaha, so funny…your fashion choices are so cute!
i’ll guess 16 lb, 8 oz., and 25.8
26.3 ins and 16.2 lbs
The outfits you dress Madeline in are adorable and you can use this blog to explain it all to her one day.
I hope things are going better today with the vomiting and stuff.
I’m a single women with no kids and I’m not around little ones at all so I’ll guess 27 inches, 17lbs 2 oz.
For what its worth, my 5 month old often goes to bed without being put into his pj’s. If he’s getting sleepy, he goes to bed. I’m not going to risk waking him up by changing him!
My guess is 17lbs 7 oz and 27 inches.
I love the dress/pants outfit, it’s adorable!
ps. I think your top banner should be on the bottom and the bottom banner should be on the top… you know, feet on the bottom, heads on top!
I hope Maddy is feeling better! I’m going to guess her weight at 16.04 lbs. and her height at 25.65 inches.
Hope Maddy is feeling better soon! i hate when babies throw up… so sad…and the faces they make, but it sounds that she’s still has her lil smile going
that’s great! I guess her height as 26 inches and her weight as 16lbs 6 ozs. Love her clothes! keep it up! She’s lil miss fashionista. Liz would be so proud of you!
I love the outfits you dress her in. She’s so cute. I hope she’s feeling better & there is no more vomiting!
I hope she’s feeling better! You’re doing an amazing job. There are bound to be many hard days in the future, but you’re doing fantastic. Really.
I guess 17 lbs 27 inches
W: 15 lbs 9 ounces
H: 26.75 inches
I love her clothes….you are doing great!
15 lbs 14 oz and 26 in. is my guess. I’ve been following you a while now, just have never commented, so I just wanted to say what an amazing father I think you are…oh and Madeline is gorgeous!
15 lbs 2 oz
25.9″ tall
#1: I want to say that Maddy is so DAMN cute! I love the outfits–she always looks like a little doll. I hope she’s feeling better and you get a piece of mind at the doctors that it was just the 24hour bug and not the flu.
#2: I’m guessing she now weighs 15lbs 8oz and is 26.5 inches long.
The good news is that you made it through the first of many stomach bugs to come. The bad news is that there is a certain percentage of times that you’ll also get the bug from all of the vomit cleaning and consoling of poor sick child. So glad to here Maddy is feeling better.
16 lbs. 4 oz.
26 inches
Omg I misspelled hear. Oops.
16 lbs, 2 oz
25.25 in
I love your blog. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
Matt – cute outfits. Love the Your Favorite Band Sucks t-shirt! So sorry to hear Maddy was sick. Hope she is feeling better. I know that feeling of being overwhelmed and scared when your baby is sick – I was going through that last week when my 1 year old had a bad allergic reaction to eggs. Scared the shit out of me. You are doing great – hang in there.
Uh-oh, watch out. You’re liking this fashion thing so much I forsee you in a dress over jeans before long.
My guess: 25.9 inches, an even 15 lbs.
Love, love, love the dress/jeans outfit! Ya did good, daddy!
I also love her t-shirt in the last photo…I want one of those!
Here are my guesses:
Height – 27.5″
Weight – 17 lb. 8 oz. – (although I thought about guessing 17 lbs. JUST for those thighs of hers…heehee…)
Oh…one last thing…a parenting tip for you. I forgot to mention that when your child is projectile vomiting, it’s best to keep your mouth CLOSED when you are close to them and unaware of when it might be coming. I learned that the hard way when my 6 year old (now 9 year old) suddenly vomited in my mouth when they were sick. NOT a good memory or one that I care to repeat.
Her outfits are always so adorable! She looks like a little diva already.
My guess
26.75 inches
16 lbs. 6 ounces
Maddy is getting so big and just cuter and cuter each day. I see a lot of Liz in her but I also see a lot of you in her. Give yourself some credit!! You are doing an amazing job and better then most parents would do in your situation. You are living life the fullest with your daughter and I am sure Liz is watching over you smiling each and everyday. Hence I know she is, her heart lies in your daughters. Hope she’s feeling better soon!!
I would say she is
15.6 lbs
25.75 inches
17ibs, 9 oz
26.8 inches long
You are doing great with Maddie! The vomit thing always sucks!
I just wanted to let you know that letting your kids sleep in their clothes does not make you a bad parent. This morning when I went in to wake my eight year old up for school I noticed that he still had on his clothes from yesterday. I asked him why and his answer was that he and his dad forgot to put on pajamas.
And her outfits are always too cute. You are doing a GREAT job!
i hope she’s feeling better and you’re doing alright! i’m going to guess 16 lbs. 11 oz and 26 1/2 in.
I hope Madeline feels better soon. I think she will be 26 inches tall
weight 16 lbs, 5 oz
25.75 inches
16.53 lbs
I LOVE the shirt she’s wearing!
I am sorry Madeline was sick and you felt overwhelmed. But you did a great job!! I knew you would.
You CAN do this.
I am trying to think where my little girl was around that time, BUT I can’t remember.
And my guess for her weight is 18 pounds. I may be way off.
I suck at dressing my kid compared to you. Glad the puking stopped. She is sooo lucky to have you. Sounds like you have a great daycare too!
16lbs even and 25.75 in tall. the comment on the onesie and jeans etc was a classic…..it cracked me up to read it!!!! you do well in dressing maddy. i’m sure when the time comes (with questions), you’ll have the right words to explain it to maddy and this blog will help. barfing babies are no fun but if it helps, it is a 24 hr bug and it is nationwide……it has hit in ny, ga, and fla that i know of. you did well with all the barfing……i gagged with the kids!!!!!!!
16.14 lbs & 26.12 inches
are my guesses from the MA.
Hope Maddy is feeling better…I can’t believe she was smiling after getting sick, at 31 I still cry when I get sick.
My son is 8 and still goes to bed in the outfit he’s going to wear the next day. It saves a hell of a lot of time in the morning! I’ve sent him to school in the same outfit several times on consecutive days. Isn’t that smart parenting?!? Keep up the awesome work…you are truly doing a great job!
p.s. Pedialyte is not only good for projective vomiting…it’s good for hangovers too. Not saying you’ll ever need that of course!
Shamwows definitely clean up puke well. And other bodily fluids that leak from my babies. I read your blog all the time and I think you are doing amazing with Maddie I’d love to say “Hang in there, it will get better.” But that’s bullshit and we both know it. It will be tough every day for the rest of your life. Every first, every moment, you will think of Liz. But thats not horrible either. Horrible would be if you DIDN’T think of her. Ok, I will get off my soapbox now and guess her weight:
19.6 pounds, 26 3/4 inches
You do such a great job dressing her! She is a fashionista in the making
16lbs 5oz
25 inches
Oh I’m so glad she is feeling better! My son had the stomach bug before Christmas…not fun.
As for my guess. 26 1/4 inches tall and 14.75 inches tall.
i say she weights 14.23 pounds and is 25.75 inches long.
hope she’s feeling better!
Actually, jeans under dresses is indie-trendy. Maddy just needed a braided belt to complete the look
xo
16.5 lbs and 27 inches.
So good to hear that she is doing better… must have been the 24-hour bug. (my entire family and I had it in Nov-Dec)… And you have done an excellent job styling your little girl!!
Feel better Maddy.
16 lbs, 26.5 in.
She is soooo cute! My guess is 16.5 oz, 26 inches. You are doing a great job Madeline’s fashion!
My guess:
17.3 lbs
25.25 inches
p.s. love all the little outfits!
You are awesome. I just had to tell you that.
My guesses:
Height: 25.25 inches
Weight:15.25 lbs.
weight guess – 17lbs 7oz
height guess – 27.25inches
You are an awesome father, Matt. I say that wholeheartedly!
My guess:
17lbs 4oz
27.4″
“all of the
tables in my house
are covered with stuff”
Yeah, mine too. And the counters. The floors are catching up.
Whenever Ev got this barfing bug, he would refuse to drink anything. Now THAT is not good. I’m so glad Maddy’s drinking! The gang at the Doc’s office is gonna be so proud!
xooxo
Love the oufits! I am pregnant and really hope its a girl so I can steal some of your ideas…
My guess is 16 lb 3 oz and 26.75 in.
Lauren
My guess is 25.2 inches and 16lbs 6oz.
I think the outfit is cute too… of course, jeans under a dress is more a necessity for my preschoolers here in Illinois then it will be for Maddy in the warm CA weather.
As for the not changing clothes thing… to be honest, every single parent does it occasionally. It doesn’t make you a bad father at all.
Height: 25.50
Weight: 16.15
By the way your new foundation sounds awesome! I am glad you are staring it up. Too bad my twon did not hve any programs like that when I lost my mom at age 13.
26.1 inches
15.1 pounds
Hope she’s feeling better!! I HATE when my 10 year old gets sick, it isn’t easy at any age! Hugs.
Christa is right: you are about to get a shitload of shamwows. Fuck, I may send you five. Love the dress with jeans. Too cute. And I also love the T-shirt she wore to the doc.
Sounds like you handled the puking great. That is no fun. Glad she’s better.
Madeline is 16 lbs even and 26 inches even.
You are doing such an awesome job! I check in on you and Maddy daily! My guess is height: 26.3 and weight 16.12
Ok LOVE her adorable outfits!
My guess 17.6 lbs and 26 in
i’d be sick if i ate baby green beans, too… hope she’s all better!!!you are a super dad – w/ great fashion sense
! she’s so lucky to have landed in your nest…
my guess for her is………17 ib. 1 oz and… 27 inch, 2 cm…
even if i’m wrong, it’s been an honor to watch her grow!
Matt,
Been a reader for a while now…first time commenting. Love reading your blog…it definitely keeps me in check when my 3 kids start driving me nuts…How blessed I am to have this time with them. I know you know this, but what a BEAUTIFUL little girl you have. When you write about not knowing what to do…..from the pics of her no one would ever think you didn’t now what you were doing. She looks so happy and so in love with her daddy. I think to her you know everything. As for the outfits…she looks fabulous!!! Oh and sometimes my girls wear the same thing one day, to bed, and the next day too. Hope she is feeling better.
My guesses….
15 pounds 11 ounces
25 1/4 inches
I love Maddy’s shirt in the last pic!
My guess is the same as my twins’ weight/height at their 9 month check up the other day (they were born one week after Maddy). 16 pounds, 14 ounces. 26 inches long
she’s a gorgeous baby, matt. but i know you don’t need me to tell you that. and you did alright with the pukey incident. there’s always a 1st time for everything, and you did just great. even if you did cry about it. i did too the 1st time my oldest had that happen to her.
as for my guesses – weight – 16 pounds 2 oz height – 26 inches.
phew – i am so glad you said 1159pm and not midnight. when people say midnight i get all thrown off – would midnight friday mean the beginning of friday or the end of friday. i always say the beginning of friday, but folks i know argue with me and say the end.
enough of my silly ramble babble – glad madeline is feeling better and keeping things down for you. what an impression you would have made had this happened on the airplane. had i been sitting next to her it would have been chain reaction… well, probably not with baby greeen beans, but definitely as her foods get thicker… mmm… dinner anyone?
since she puked most of her weight off, i am going to go with 14# 8oz and 26 inches long.
(((hugs)))
I laughed so hard at the fashion statement i had to call my husband in from the other room. he is always so proud when he dresses our daughter (10 months) in something fashionable! And your outfit was awesome. I am super jealous of all of maddy’s hair and the ability to put a bow in it, mine little girl is bald, bald, bald.
my guess is 16lb, 12oz and 25 3/4 inches!
68.5in
135lbs
shamwows…lol
we had a pukefest on the same day!!! oh the joys!!! hope miss maddy is feeling better.
as for her weight and height – 16.25lbs and 26 inches long
at some point she wont appreciate people guessing her weight! haha!
17 pds 6 oz and 26 and 3/4″ long
i loved the dress, onesie and jean combo but i am really digging the high baby heels. maddy is a baby liz that is for sure. she really looks a lot like her beautiful mother. you will do a fine job explaining all of this to her someday. sounds like you kept a lot of momentos and also have tons of pictures to keep liz’s pint sized spirit alive! i feel like a tool because i sat out the Liz memorial run but this year i am vowing to do it!!
16.3 lbs. (lowered from a guess of 17.1, because of throwing up)
26.25″
Congrats on making it through the stomach crap. Those are some of the worst nights in young parenting. SO glad she likes the Pedialyte! My boys wouldn’t swallow it.
First, here is my guess:
Height: 27.5 inches
Weight: 17lbs 11oz
I am sorry Maddy was sick! Poor baby! I would have been freaking out too so you aren’t alone there. I have a hard time dealing with puke, LoL. You handled it great! I love all her outfits! Hell, who know Maddy may be starting some baby fashion trends. I love the jeans under the dress!
Puking children are scary, period. Any and every parent feels helpless and distressed when having to care for a sick child, I salute your resiliencec in dealing with this situation the way you did. I’ve been lurking on your blog for a while, but never commented before. My kiddos were sick over the holidays (too much “indulgence” food, not enough sleep) and I spent a night laying on the bathroom floor with one of them curled up on my lap in a big towel (there were no blankies left after so many explosions!), rocking back and forth, humming a lullaby. In that moment, alone with a moaning, quivering toddler, in the dark, I felt so immensely alone and incapable of doing anything to help, as if the night would never end, with fear oppressing my heart… and yet I was surrounded by my sleeping family, in a safe place, with many resources at hand…
While my mind knew all of that, my heart was still so worried…
Yet the sun got up the next morning, a new day starting with a little ‘un full of life and smiles. These are precious moments, these new mornings and renewed smiles, they fill me up with new hopes.
I can rationalize your grief in my mind, and I often feel sad and overwhelmed with a feeling of loss for all that could have been when I read your posts, but in all honesty, I simply cannot imagine living it, going through the motions, facing it everyday. Your pain is immense and your strength matches it. I admire your courage and I thank you for sharing your story with us. It makes me a more grateful person and you inspire me. I guess you are probably tired of hearing that, but it’s true to me, so there you go. Thank you.
Too cute in that dress.
My guess 16 lb 8 oz, 16.5 inches
For some reason my kids like to sleep in their clothes and then on the flip side they hate to change out of their pjs. It happens more than I’d like to admit.
18#8oz
28 inches long
Bad father? Uh.no. It seems to me like you may be THE MOST wonderful father in the whole world. One day at a time…you are fabulous.
damn, my son, who was born on 10/26/08 weighs more than maddy does :X but he was also 10lbs 5 oz at birth..
anyway, my guess is 15lbs 5 oz and 25 1/2 inches long
i think you’re a great dad btw…. liz would be so proud of everything you do for/with maddy.. keep up the good work..
28 1/2 inches
19 lbs 2 oz
And yes, I think the Sham Wow would pick up vomit!!!!!
I’m loving her outfits – all of them! You’re a rockstar when it comes to this fashion thing… give yourself some credit!
My guess – 15.5 inches, 26.3 pounds.
(keep in mind, I have no kids, so I really have no clue when it comes to growth…)
Take care m+m!
17lbs 2oz 27in
She is adorable and getting so big!
I’m going to say…..
26.75 inches and 18lbs 1oz
16 lbs. 9 oz.
26.25 inches long
I’m glad the flu didn’t last too long. Hope you don’t get it too!!!
hi m+m.
16 lbs 5 oz, 26.4 inches tall.
hope maddy is feeling better.
she’s stunning, sick or not…
I’m going high. Maddy looks like a great big beautiful growing girl. Is she up for a pink piano duel anytime?
18.36 lb and 26.875 in
Matt, the triad layering is genius.
I would say your stylin’ IQ is up
there! Madeline is such a doll!
Hope the li’l one has recovered, and you
won’t have to deal with anymore upheavals.
I had a guess, then lost it somewhere as I was
trying to be different from everyone else.
26.7 inches
16. 4 pounds
26.75 inches long
17 lb. 2 oz.
You’re doing good Matt.
it brings tears to MY eyes when you have to go through difficult situations on your own with Maddy. I didn’t even know Liz and sometimes I can’t believe she’s gone. It’s a very strange feeling, but it’s because you write about her so eloquently that we all have come to know and love Liz.
Also, i sleep in my clothes NOW! And it hasn’t harmed me in anyway.
Ok, guess…15.5 inches, and 26 lbs (would have said a little higher on the weight, but all the puking and all)
You did a great job taking care of Maddy while she was sick, as she is still looking as healthy and happy as ever! I’m going to guess 16lbs 5oz, and 26.5 inches
re: the clothes – if you can’t see it or smell it, you’re good. i leave my little one in the same thing for a day if it’s clean. and my boy would wear the same pair of pjs even with shit all over it if i’d let him.
i’ll go for 15 lbs. 11 oz. and 27 inches
I totally stole your fashion idea today. well, not totally. I had plans to layer a dress over a long sleeved onsie with jeans but today, thanks to you, I actually put the outfit together and my daughter looked adorable! I wish I could show you a picture!! She was rocking her daycare today in style!
As for the puking, I’ve dealt with tons of that with my oldest and can relate to that fear when they are puking while you’re driving. what the hell should you do?!
You continue to do an amazing job of raising that beautiful little girl.
my guess: 16 lbs 6 oz 27.5″
Matt – when you said that you didnt’ know how you were going to explain this all to Maddy I just about cried… You will never really have to explain anything to her – she is a well loved, well cared for child. The fact that you live your life for her (and liz) will be more than so many other kids get. And truly – I do not know how single parents do it. I admire you every day for that. Parenting is hard enough when there are two… Hang in there! (My husband was a stay at home dad and he was proud of every outfit he ever “put together” on our twins when they were infants – I have a photo album full of babies in different outfits – I think it’s great that you’re showing her and everyone else that dad’s can dress babies too!)
I will guess 26 inches and 16 pounds and 4 ounces.
Sorry for the mass puking. I am glad she is better now.
love the outfits!
16 lbs
26 inches
I think the cute baby will be 28.2 inches and…17.8 pounds. I want to say 18 pounds, but am resisting due to her tummy bug. Good job on getting through your first projectile vomiting episode. At least it wasn’t all coming out the other end!
So sorry to hear Maddy has been sick. Really scary the first time they get ill like that. You did good.
And I must say she is one of the most fashionable little girls I have ever seen! The days my hubby was in charge of the dressing was always.. uhm… interesting.
Maddy is probably the most stylish baby I’ve ever seen. I’m still in awe over the onesie over the pants. Brilliant. I don’t know what you’re worried about.
My guess: 26.25″ 17.5 lbs.
So I’ve been reading your blog for a while and figured at one point or another I need to not be a silent stalker and actually say something. I love reading your journey through a tough life that you have been dealt.
My guess is:
18.23 lbs
27 inches
Um, ick. Puke was my least favorite baby extra. You did a great job pushing the Pedialyte. Sometimes babies puke… and then they’re fine. Weird. Good Luck!
Weight: 16 lbs 6 oz
Height: 26 1/4 in
Matt – I’ve been reading your blog for months and never cease to be amazed by the raw honesty of your posts and the obvious love and devotion you have for Maddy (and Liz). I have never commented before but your wondering if your letting Maddy wear the same thing two days in row made you a really bad father (don’t know if that was a serious thought or not) compelled me to respond.
I will tell you what I tell all the new fathers I have spoken to who are concerned about whether or not they will be a good dad to their daughter. . . just try to be the kind of man you would want your daughter to marry.
Based on your blog and how happy Maddy obviously is, you’re doing just fine. I’m sure Liz’s parents would agree.
Wow – she has got to be one of the most beautiful (not to mention well-dressed) babies I’ve seen! And you’re such a great dad!
Poor Maddy. My Katie(14 months) had to stay home today for the same reason. It is scary isn’t it.
26 3/4 inches
17lbs 10 oz.
Sounds like you did a great job with Maddy’s first puke fest! And you’re doing an even more awesome job with dressing your daughter…love the “Your favorite band sucks” t-shirt!
17 lbs., 14 oz., 27.5″
Oh I forgot to tell you that you’re not a bad father for not putting jammies on every night. Sometimes we don’t get out of our jammies all day.
It was hard not to read the comments, but I wanted to make a guess on my own
I am going to say 16 pds 13 oz and 27.3 oz.
You did great with Madeline’s first sickness. You are right it is not easy to not have a tag team especially during times like that. Your fashion dressing is good too. My husband has taken to dressing our daughter in Matt style as we call it. He puts her onsies on the outside sometimes too.
I am so sorry to hear that Maddy is ill – I hope she is back on the mend. That is scary to have an infant throw up that much. Hope she’s hydrated and well. She’s in capable, loving hands – you are doing an amazing job. Hang in there. I hope you don’t catch what she has!
My guess is 16 lbs 4 oz, height of 26″
I’ll take vomiting over diarrhea any day. Consider yourself blessed…. My guess- 16.2 26″
Hey Matt! I have been following your blog for a few months now. I’m a missionary in Perú and we have 3 little boys, so I always love seeing your little princess! She has got to be the cutest, most adorable little girl I have ever seen! You two make quite a pair- loved the pics of the 2 of you chillin’ on the couch! Just wanted to say that I think you are doing an AMAZING job raising her! She is going to have the coolest life with such great stories of the great places you take her and cool restaurants she sleeps through!
I really do think you’re doing an amazing job! You love her so much and that is so evident! It’s always scary when they’re sick, but I hope she will all better super soon! Projectile vomiting can be very scary! I’m praying for you both regularly and I am especially praying for her tummy to get all fixed soon!! Just wanted to say Hey and I think you are doing AWESOME!!
I have told my husband about your fashion choices with maddy and he always says he doesn’t know how he would do it…There is no Vogue for babies
I will guess 15.6 and 25 inches
16.7lbs
26.7 inches.
Both my husband and I were cracking up at the Shamwow! So happy to hear that you are doing such amazing things. Madeline has such a great da da. I’m sorry you had to here ma ma and not see the smile that would have come on liz’s face.
26.5 inches
16.2 lb
Go Maddy!!!
I’m all about wearing the same clothes overnight/two days in a row. Unless there is puke on them. Then I think it is a good idea to change them.
15.91 lbs / 26.3 inches
16 pounds 14ounces
27.25 inches
26.3 in
16. lbs 77oz
First off my guess…..16#4oz and 26.25 in.
Secondly, you are a funny man Mr. Logelin. The whole outfit comment made me laugh out loud! (That you were talking about layering in the first place, then that you couldn’t believe you were either!)
Lastly, I am very impressed with you re: waiting for your luggage in your previous post. It made me think of a quote from Maya Angelou (when she was on Oprah:)) , “I’ve learned that you can tell alot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.” Just from what you have said, sounds like you’ve come a long way my friend.
P.S. Madeline looks so cute in your “layered” outfit standing by the wall I just want to eat her up!!!!
If you are a bad dad for letting Maddy sleep in her clothes, I am an awful mom. Griffin (who is
sleeps in his jammies and just puts clothes on over them so they become long johns. At night, he just takes his clothes off and his long johns become jammies. I usually only let him do that a couple nights in a row before fighting with him to change the underlayer.
I’m sorry you have to do this alone.
Sending you peace and light, Nena and Reese
Wow, it exhausts me just reading about the throwup night/day. Good job daddy. Heck ya on leaving clothes on for a couple days. Seriously, how dirty do they get? (well, minus the throw up). Just think when she’s a teenager she probably won’t change her clothes anyway. My guess…27.2 tall…16.7 weight
I faithfully read your blog daily (at least check it daily for a new post I mean) and I love the stories you tell, the pictures you take and the way you love your daughter. I could only hope if anything ever happened to me my husband would put forth the same efforts you do in letting Madeline know her mother by doing the little things she would do. Keep up the good work – you are an excellent father!!
I love the pictures of the two of you on the couch! Especially the one where she is looking up at you! Love the enseble you put together, but you forgot the heels!!!
Take care,
Debbie

hi matt,
i’ve been reading your blog faithfully for the last year. this is my first time commenting. sometimes i drive by your house late at night and park my car and just cry and brush my hair while i watch you and madeline through the window. i would love to spend more time with you guys. maybe i could make you dinner. do you like rabbit? i know how to boil a mean little bunny! lol. haha.
well, i’ll stop by either way tomorrow night and finally say hi. i guess it’s better than watching you guys sleep!
whenever you’re ready, i think god told me we should be together. and i cannot wait.

I’ll say it again, you’re an Awesome DAD!
Matt–so happy that Maddy is on the mend. The tummy bugs are icky, but good that this one didn’t last long. Good job dealing with it. Again, such DARLING clothes!
My guess:

Matt, so excited to hear about the news with the Liz Logelin Foundation! Best wishes in this endeavor!
Madeline is beautiful, as always. She is such a smiley baby, and her smile looks so much like Liz (although she mimics some of your faces too). So sorry to hear about her being sick. Hopefully, she’s all better now. She might not like green beans for a while.
Letting her sleep in her clothes is not a bad thing! I’ve done it several times, but only in soft clothes. Not in denim just because I would hate to sleep in denim.
Matt-I hope it was just a bug and that you stay healthy. Goodness knows that those things can take down an entire house. My guess is 15lb 7oz and 26″
You do a fantabulous job dressing her. She is just the cutest! I hope she’s feeling better now, poor baby!
My guess
H = 25.75 inches
W = 17.25 pounds
Love the outfits! she is really getting big, you could really see it in the stroller when she picked you up at the airport (with some help).
my guess…
height = 26.75″
weight = 16lbs, 2oz
My guess is:
15 lbs. 8 oz.

You are doing a great job!!! Projectile vomit is a very overwhelming experience. I love the layered dress and jeans look!

I will say 16.15 lbs. and 25.75 inches

She is so adorable… these last few updates have been great. Happy 2009! Oh, this is my first post ever, but I have been reading for many many months now… my guess 19 lbs 3 oz, 26 1/4 inches
Oh yuck. The pukies are never fun! I’m glad she’s feeling better now! You survived the first vomit attack, so you can make it through anything now, I promise! You’re doing such a great job being a Daddy, Matt. Don’t ever worry about that.
My guess is 15.8 pounds, 26″ tall.
Grow Maddy! Grow!
hmmm…17lbs, 5oz, 26.2 inches?
Poor baby! Stomach bugs suck. When my kids get them, I put beach towels under them on the bed so that if they puke in their sleep, it’s easier to clean up. If you put down several layers of towels and catch it quickly, you can avoid having to change the whole bed (which is especially good when they’re in YOUR bed, and you can only fit one set of king sized sheets in your washer at a time…).
Surely there’s a pharmacy in your area that delivers… These are the times when you should call all your wonderful IRL friends and say, “Hey, can you bring me over some Pedialyte and a six pack of beer?” Just make sure that you each get the right beverage.
Hugs,
Amy
16.25 and 27.25
I LOVE the jeans dress and onsie, so cute. She looks like her mothers daughter in that outfit. What an awesome dad you are!
take care
HI Matt!
I have 3 boys, and we had a puke fest over Christmas too. They were all sick at the same time and when it was done, I imagined a green haze enveloping our house. I swear to GOD that I have Post Traumatic Stress from 3 solid days of vomit, diarrhea and fevers.
Maddy is AWESOME, as are you and her haute couture! Rock on!
My guess is 17 lbs, 26 inches.
I think you dress her in the cutest outfits ever! Shes adorable.
I’m going to guess 16 lbs. 12 oz. and 27.1 inches
I’ll say 17 pounds, 25.5 inches.
15 lbs 25.5 inches.
Even though the situation is so unfair, you are kicking single parenting’s ass! That little girl is the most important thing in the world to you, and it’s so sweet to see it come across in your writing – in obvious big ways, but also in the small ways too. Especially with the intensity that you ran out of your office, forgetting your keys. She is SO lucky to have such a wonderful father. You are doing an incredible job, and know that you can handle anything (even if it’s with a little help!).
Love all of Maddy’s clothes in this post. I frequently leave my daughter in her pj’s all day long and occasionally she sleeps in her clothes. So you’re not alone there.
Hope Maddy is feeling better. The puking is no fun at all.
hmm, I’m going with 14.7lbs and 26 inches
I guess 26 3/4 inches and 15.8 lbs.
I hope the tummy bug is gone now, what a beautiful girl and you are doing an amazing job!! I love love love the onsie, dress and jeans she looked GREAT!!!
16 lbs 4 oz
26.5 inches
looking great, both of you.
You are doing a great job Matt
27 1/2 inches
27.8 lbs.
You rock, Matt.
My guestimate is 16.5 lbs and 26 inches. I’d guess higher for weight but after the recent vomit fest – well, she’s gonna be a bit shy of my original guess.
I’m sorry this is so hard – you are amazing, though. I wish I had a dad like you!
15.2 lbs and 25inches….
Can I just say again that your baby girl is adorable and oooh soo stylish. Hope she is feeling tons better. Thank god for pedialyte.
Thanks for laughs!! It’s helpful after chasing a 15 mos old all day long. Maddy is adorable!
16.8 lbs and 25 inches
I have been reading your blog for a while now but have never commented. You continually amaze me with your writing and of course your strength. You dress Maddy 10 times better than I ever could! Y’all have truly touched my heart and I think about you often, as I have a one year old little boy. I can’t imagine doing this on my own. Anyway, on with the guessing…16lbs 10 oz. 25 1/4 tall
16 lbs 2.5oz
27inches
Anything that goes wrong with our kids sucks, but when they are throwing up it just seems worse! I’m so sorry you had to deal with that alone.
my guess is 16 lbs and 25.6 in.
wow. shamwows. amazing.
so i had no idea what those were until i was unlucky enough to get food poisoned these last two days (and long nights) and caught many shamwow 3 a.m. infomercials. that coke spilled in the carpet trick— it IS pretty impressive.
Matt- you are not giving yourself enough credit. You are doing a fabulous job and should be an inspiration to all of the single parents out there. Hang in there!
My guess:
16lbs 2.5oz
25.5 inches
You’re a great dad and your courage astounds me.
25.75 inches
15 lbs
(I am probably going to be the most off…)
I’m glad she didn’t puke on that cute outfit…because actually, you’re pretty darn good at that “fashion shit”!
height: 26 1/4″ weight: 16lbs 12oz.
PS…be glad you weren’t puking too. I went through that once when I was a single mom of two tiny girls, and all 3 of us were puking. Now that was some FUN. You did great, by the way.
I really really hope that the comment from candice b. real is a joke that I’m not in on. I’m highly disturbed right now. Matt- report that to the police if it’s not a joke.
Be safe.
cute pictures of maddie. My guess is 26 1/2 inches and 16 lbs.
Hi… My first time commenting… I love your blog. I have a 15-month old son and have developed a certain tolerance for a certain amount of puke on me/my clothes/anything before grossing out. Amazing how that works. You are doing an amazing job. And have an incredible attitude. Anyway, my guess is 16lbs and 16 inches.
Hope the visit went well and Maddy feels better soon!
You’re are doing an awesome job taking care of Madeline! My guess is 27.25 inches and 16 pounds and 9 ounces.
You both ROCK!!
Matt.
I love your blog.
Great new header and footer.
My apologies if these are not new.
Most likely, I just didn’t click over soon enough to notice them

My guess
Weight – 15.76 lbs
Height – 25.56 in
You are a great daddy – liz would be proud of you for handling it all on your own.

Cool news about the non-profit mr. president!
L
16.8lbs and 27 inches.
She looks about the same size as my babe
Cant wait to hear about all the updates on the organization.
OMG! Gotta comment before I read any further. The dress with the jeans….ADORABLE!!! Big thumbs up on that outfit.
I’ve been following your blog, and just have to say you are doing an amazing job. Great job on the outfit, by the way! I hope your little girl feels better soon!
Okay….now I’ve read past the adorable outfit photos.
So sorry Madeline had the stomach flu. Sounds like it was just a 24hr thing and she’s on her way to feeling better. Holding down all that Pedialyte is a good sign! Whether it’s their first or hundredth time being sick, it’s always a little scary.
The expiration date on Pedialyte is usually at least a year out. After having to take kids with the flu to get it while they were sick, I decided it would be best to keep a bottle or two in the cabinet. Of course, if you have it you’ll never need to use it. That’s the rule, I think.
Hmmm…I will guess 15 lbs 9 oz, and 27 inches. Go me! Fingers crossed, especially because I have no idea what I’m doing and graphs/charts are pretty much as useless as directions that include North, South, East, & West.
Glad you survived the projectile vomit! Parenting is a dirty job…but you rock
15 lbs 12 oz

Great outfits! I love the dress with jeans!
dude, pajamas are WAY overrated.
I have to say though, you DO have quite the fashion sense. her outfits are all effing adorable, and she wears them in such style. I’m sure her mom would be so proud of both of you.
sounds like you survived the first puke-fest quite well.
9 months ALREADY?!!! IMPOSSIBLE!
I’m going to guess, 26.5 inches long and 16lb 7oz
Good luck on your appointment, I’m glad to hear that beautiful baby is doing better. All our love,

I’m going to say 16lbs 5oz & 25″
I will guess 17 lbs 9 oz. and 28 in. long. I swear that girl just gets cuter and cuter by the day. Glad you made it through your first time of projectile vomiting…blech! Happy to hear she is doing better too.
I hope little Madeline is feeling better by now! By the way, I think you ended up doing great eventhough you were overwhelmed at the time. I still get overwhelmed often with my two kiddos….why did I think having them so close together would be a good idea?? Parenting is a big challenge- that’s a constant!
Anyway, I’m going to guess that Miss M is 26.1 inches tall and weighs 18.8 lbs. By the way, she has the cutest, longest toes!! At least it looks that way in one of the pics you posted- the one where she’s standing against the wall modeling the jeans/dress outfit.
Can I sneak in under the wire? I’ll go with 17lbs 2oz, 26.75″ — but take off an ounce if she hurled again on the way to the doctor’s office.
Though of course I hope she didn’t! (B was such a puker I just ended up a little blase about it, and took a lot of comfort in the fact that bugs work their way through their little bodies relatively quickly.) I hope that Maddy’s well on the way to fully mended by now.
Yeah, that single parent have-to-be-everywhere-do-everything-not-miss-a-single-fucking-trick-because-there’s-no-one-else-to-pick-up-any-dropped-balls thing can be pretty fucking daunting at times. It’s all on us. And that does suck (especially since most days I feel barely qualified to operate a toaster). And it sucks moreso for you because your situation is probably one of the few exceptions to an adage I hold near and dear: The only thing worse than being alone is wishing you were.
Thing is, there are upsides, too. Even in your situation. They don’t fully compensate, but they can mitigate. A little. I’ll just leave those for another comment, cuz this overworked, exhausted, stressed out single mother needs to get some sleep now so she can remember to appreciate all the ways she’s so fucking lucky when she drags herself out of bed tomorrow to do it all again… :- )
PS: So exciting about the non-profit, Mr. President, and to see your reach extend in that direction. But foundation or no, I hope you realize how much non-quantifiable goodness you’re already responsible for in Liz’s name: every wife or husband who holds their tongue or their spouse because your words opened their eyes to how much they have; every mother or father who finds a little more patience for their children or more motivation to get them out and about because of your experiences; everyone who reaches out to strangers because they see what you’ve done with that; all the good that results from those little actions; and so, so much more — It’s all in your column, Matt, just as much as the “concrete” measurable dollars that will, before long, flow to widows and widowers. AWESOME.
HOLY FUCK! I wrote that much?!? Sorry!
Well shit it’s a little past midnight here in Oregon on the 9th. Didn’t get here in time. Oh well! I hope she grew some and she is feeling better right now. Right now myself and my two kids (Lilly who is two and Ben who is five months) have this flemmy cough throw up, stuffy nose thing. So not fun. Running off of very little sleep for the past few days. My husband works so I can stay home ( he works nights too) and I will NOT bug him to lose any sleep. He works hard so I can stay home so I deal with it.
But pedialyte has been a LIFE savor for me these past few days for both of my kids. I’ve never seen so much puke in my life now that I have two kids. And sucking out my sons nose, yikes I’m sure the neighbors think I’m beating him because he screams so much. Lilly is old enough that she can actually “blow” her nose a bit for me. Ack ok I’m ramblin on enough now.
I’m glad Madeline likes the pedialyte. My daughter likes it, my son makes this awful face and looks at me like “what in the hell are you trying to feed me?” LOL Got some great pictures of that face too! lol
But we do pedialyte, humidifier, cleaning out noses and loads of sleep when we can. lol
I hope she starts feeling like herself soon! Sounds like even when sick she’s a happy baby! Thats great!! Can’t wait to hear about her 9month appointment!
OH and I laughed very hard about you describing her outfit you dressed her in! I think you did great!!! Ok it’s 1am and my kids are finally out, time for some sleep for me……
One more thing: Be careful — that Candice is obviously nuts.
I mean, she had GOD on the line and didn’t ask him for Maddy’s height/weight?!? Crazy bitch.
Okay, I’m going to sleep now for real.
Shit I forgot to say that, you are not a bad father for keeping her in the same clothes. They didn’t get dirty! I do this all the time with my two kids. Hell it saves me from doing laundry, even if it’s just a little bit!
best dressed kid..yuuuuup…
I will guess 26.75 inches long and 17.1 lbs….loving the outfits…1st time commenter here and have read thru the posts from the beginning til now just since the 1st of the year. You are doing one hell of a job and make me question my mothering skills. Maddy is going to be very proud of you Daddy and I know Liz is looking down from Heaven smiling on you.
My guess is 15.5 lbs and 26.5 in.
You are an amazing father never think anything less! I am currently a single mommy of a 2.5 yr old and a 7 mth old as my hubby is in Iraq so I know how stressful handling this on your own can be. Just a few nights ago my 2 yr old fell and split her forehead open bleeding like crazy. I ran down the 3 flights of stairs to my neighbor who helped out but it was very upsetting as I had to lug both kids around running to the ER. I hope Maddy is feeling better!!
Let’s get the guess out of the way first.
Height: 25 1/4″ which I just realize sadly is 25.25 – sorry
Weight: 15 lbs, 9 oz.
I hope Maddy (and you) are feeling better. I can’t imagine how overwhelmed you must have felt. Thank goodness you have great resources to call and calm you down.
As always love the fashion choices. You are an awesome baby-dresser!
Here’s to better “vomit free” days ahead.
Hey,
been reading your blog for a good three months now, spend the first week catching up on all the posts from the beginning, never commented before but thought I should say hi at some point and why not now while taking a guess in the contest.
So HI, this is Irene from Germany, mom to a little girl named Jennifer who will be 2 years old in two weeks and currently 25 weeks pregnant with a little boy.
Can’t tell you anything that someone else hasn’t before…You are a great father! I guess my hubby would be hopelessly lost if I wasn’t there anymore.
I absolutely ADORE the dress and Jeans outfit, it’s so cute! And those cute little naked toes sticking out of those jeans…Maddy is such a cutie (oh my the word cute is used way to often in this sentence I guess but oh well)
Anyways, keep up the good work and my guesses are (converted from the metric system)
height: 27.17 inches
weight: 14.99 pounds
Matt your an awesome DAD!!!!!! I hope Maddy is feeling much better. The first time your child is sick like that is scary. I kinda freaked out the first time also. I remember the first time my kids fell and hit their head when first starting to walk. Those egg size knots on their heads. That freaked me out too. You have lots of good family and friends and you will always do fine. You need to give yourself more credit. You are doing an amazing job. Ok for Maddys Dr. visit I say 16lb 12oz and 25.5 inches.
You are doing awesome!
26.5 in
15.2 lbs
She’s so adorable. I love the blue dress/jeans ensemble. Very cute. I’ve read your whole blog in the past couple of days and it’s so inspirational. It really helps me focus when I’m feeling down. Anyways, my guess… 26.5 in and 15 lbs.
Well, I am guessing 15 lbs 4 oz and 26 in. You are a great Dad (nice jean and dress combo), congrats on surviving your first stomach illness. Yuck.
Your doing awesome… Heck I am on kid #2 and still flip out when she starts vomiting! It is not fun.
As for height and weight, I will guess 16 lbs 2oz and 26 in.
Bravo Matt for the awesomely cute outfits and for handling Maddy’s tummy issues so well! The baby pukes are the worst. Hope she’s feeling better (and that you don’t get whatever she had)
My guess: 26.25 inches tall, 15.8 lbs
16lbs and 26.75 inches
sorry about the vomiting, it’s never fun. i hope you guys have a good appt.
is there a way to get my name/email/website to stay so I don’t have to refill it out every time i write? thanks!
hugs from NJ,
erica and Landon
Puking is no fun, but I think it’s harder for the parent then it is for the kid!
I’m going to guess 15lbs. 6oz. and 26.5inches.
I’m sorry she got sick but glad it was short lived. I say she is 16lbs 2oz and 26 3/4 inches! She is a beautiful girl

You are doing an incredible job. Your love for Maddie shines so brightly, I can see it all the way over here in VA (I’m a displaced So Cal native – wish I was still there so I could meet you guys!). Anyway, Maddie is so lucky to have you. Hope she has a fabulous doctor visit!
26.5 inches, 16.25 lbs
you’re doing a great job with that beautiful little girl!
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but after dealing with my son throwing up on me while holding him (because I didn’t know what to do with him), I asked a more experienced mom of 3 what one does with a vomiting child since they can’t put their head over the toilet. Her response was that she sits in the bathtub with them. Freakin’ genius! I’ve tried it and it works wonders (if you know when they are about to blow). I also added a towel underneath both b/c the tub is cold and b/c it soaks up the vomit. Thought I would share…
Your post had me crying and laughing (shamwow and vomit, LOL) at the same time. You did a great job with Maddy’s first bout of the stomach flu. I’m glad she is feeling better. Here is my guess for height and weight:
26 inches
16 lbs, 2 oz
17lb. 3oz.
25.5in.
Hang in there!
Awesome job all the way around, but especially in the fashion department. Liz would be very proud! My guess: 16.9lbs and 26.4 inches.
Love the new website design!
Hi Matt. I hope she’s feeling better i’m sure your taking great care of here! I’m guessing
26lbs 8ozs

Your sense of style is second to none! Little wonder-baby takes such good care of her Daddy with those smiles! Keep on trucking!
My guess: 17.4 weight, 26.8 height
Karla
Love the outfit! And I love reading this blog
25.75 inches
16 lbs. 10 oz.
When I was sick a few years ago, pedialyte was the only thing I could keep in. I found out later that I was gluten-intolerant!
I guess that Maddy is 25.50 inches and 16.10 lbs
15.4 lbs & 25.7 in
And no you are not a bad father for letting her sleep in her clothes because that would mean that I am a bad mom
28.0 inches
17.7 lbs!
Madeline looks adorable as ever!
This is by far the best blog on the internet. Thank you Matt and Maddy.
Maddy is such a beautiful little girl who seems very happy!

26.2 height
LOVE the onesie under the dress, over the jeans. Totally cute
Also love that the jeans were cuffed!
27in

Sounds like you did awesome with your first throw up bug. I have 3 little ones, and two of them got the norovirus within 48 hours of eachother. It was pure hell. A 6 year old and a 2 year old throwing up all night and all day. Luckily my 11 month old didn’t get it!
I am guessing Maddy is around
17.2lbs
27inches long!
Love the outfits! 27.3 in and 15.1 lbs.
Aw, poor little puking thing. Hope she’s doing better and you don’t become the next victim. Blech.
My guess for weight/height:

15 lb 10 oz
hope madeline is feeling better for her big event tomorrow. and you handled the up-chuck just as graceful as the rest of us. you’re doing a great job.
ahh.. sick babies suck. Sick babies when you are alone suck more. When mr. p was sick for the first time, my parents happened to be visiting. Between the two of them and my husband it still sucked. You rock.
I will say 26 inches and 16lbs 4 oz.
I admire you dealing with the pukefest with such valor – I have not had to experience that yet with Zoe and I don’t know that I would have been so calm. It gives me the willies just thinking about it.
You are a great father and I am inspired by you every day to be the best mom, wife, human being I can possibly be. I look forward to finding out more about how I can participate or help with the foundation. If you need anything please feel free to contact me.
Take care, be well!
Jen H and Zoe in the MN
Quite often do I let my little guy sleep in the clothes he wore all day (seriously, why would I wake him up to put on PJ’s?). And…yeah…if he’s clean and there’s no spit up all over him, he’ll sometimes wear the same outfit 2 days in a row.
My guess for Maddy’s weight/length:
16 lbs 4 oz
26 inches
I’m going to say 15.9 lbs and 25.4 inches!
16.2 pounds. 27.25″
And no matter what her height/weight: The most beautiful girl in the world!
Oh, and 99% of the time I let my three year old sleep in his clothes (sometimes sans jeans). It’s not bad parenting – it’s preparing them for coming home after late night partying in college. ;c)
You’re doing great.
That stomach bug is going around like wildfire. My 17 month old had it a couple of weeks ago but the good news is that it usually only lasts 12 hours…and then you’ve got your healthy kiddo back.
You are doing a fabulous job!
Height: 26.5 in
Weight: 15 lbs 5 oz
You are the best father! Anyone would be overwhelmed with an infant puking constantly and no help either! You seem really blessed to have such a great support system when you need it. I know it doesn’t come near to make up for not having Liz there though.
As far as Miss Maddy goes….I have no clue for your little peanut. I produce amazon kids but I’ll give it a shot:
16.7 lbs
26.4 in
I say she will be……15lbs.8oz. 26.7 inches. I hope Maddy feels better soon
You are doing a great job!!
16.6lbs
25.25 in
Hi Matt, I came across your blog a few months ago, and am hooked on reading you=) I can’t even imagine what pain you have gone thru, and continue to go thru. I just wanted to say hi to you, and tell you that you are a wonderful person…..and a great father to Maddy. I love how you document everything so that one day Maddy can read it.
My continued thoughts and prayers are with you and Maddy.
God Bless ~ Lorena
hope all the puking has passed.
love, love, love the “your favorite band sucks” t-shirt. god, that’s good.
17 lbs, 26 in.
You did great. It is a mess with kids puking but you did just what I would have done. And I just LOVE her outfits!
My guess is she will be 14.7lbs and 25.4 inches tall. Have fun!
Thanks for the awesome pictures!

Stopping by from mssinglemama…wonderful blog and gift for your daughter.
Same outfit for two days and slept in…No Biggie! Any parent that says they have never done that is lying
.
We all get overwhelmed when it comes to child rearing but it sounds like you are doing a great job. Maddy will not remember Dad being freaked out or stressed out regarding what is the best way to handle a situation. She will feel and remember the love and in the end that is all that counts.
PS – Welcome to the “Projectile Vomit Club”
I’m so sorry to hear about Maddy being sick!! I hope she rallies quickly. Leaving Maddy in the same clothes does not make you a bad parent at all. Did you know that if it did I would have had CPS at my doorstep long ago.
My guess:
16 lbs 10 ozs
26 1/4 inches
I love this blog! You are an awesome daddy!
27.1 Inches
17 lbs 1 ounce
15 lbs 2 oz . 26.25″ tall.
The good news is…you only panic the first time you deal with the projectile vomiting. Now you know what to do, and in the future you’ll be less teary and panicked, and more in control. I was a single Mom too, and I went through the same learning curve you are. It’s not easy doing it alone, but trust me, you’re doing just fine. Look at that little toothy grin….she’s happy, she’s healthy, and she’s very well adjusted. That my friend, is all because of you.
I’m going to guess….. 17lbs 8ozs, 26 1/2 inches tall….. Good luck!!
Aww I glad Maddy is doing better, hopefully no more puking. I love the way you dress her, and that jeans outfit was so adorable! Say what you want, but you do have an eye for a fashion!
My guess is she is 27.1 inches long, and 16.04lbs.
15 lbs 7 oz
26.5 inches tall
I almost started crying for you! That feeling of being overwhelmed hits us all, but you did fantastic!
I guess……
15lbs 7 oz and 26 inches T
16 lbs 10 oz
26.25 inches
You did so great with the vomiting!! All 1st time parents panic over stuff like that, and you were a champ, as always!!
I’m not going to guess because I’m pretty sure someone already guessed what I would have guessed (make sense?)…
But I’m delurking to say that you are an absolutely amazing parent. As I was reading this post, I just thought “what a fucking awesome dad.” I’ve thought that before, but this post just amazed me.
I say:
16lbs 1oz
25 1/2 inches
I hope the throwing up is done! We just had a 24 hour bug here for one of my 11 month olds – luckily it passsed quickly!!! You are doing a GREAT job! Maddie looks so darn happy!!!
My guess….15lb. 8 oz. and 25.75 inches
I hope Maddy feels better soon, I have a 15 month old daughter and she just had the vomit bug it only lasted 3 days (vomitting for 1 day and lethargic for 2 days)…not too bad. Before I guess I just want to say I admire you for all of this and you have a fine fashion sense.
Weight: 14.67
Height: 25.35
Good luck to everyone!
27.5 inches 16 lbs
Love the band shirt!
Wt: 15lbs, 4 oz
Ht: 26 1/4 inches
k -I think the amount of tears and belly laughs I’ve had reading this post is about equal to eachother!
Matt…you are growing up man. I know that sounds so silly… but…you are…as a parent! I know it is so hard…but you are doing the best you can…and doing an awesome job. If you ever doubt yourself, look at Maddy to see so you can kick yourself in the ass for even questioning!
The throwing up is weird…wonder if she got a back to daycare bug or something. Towels work as great vomit catchers…I remember experiencing the same thing you did…we didn’t make it through the store without some vomit and I had to go to the freaking meat dept to get wipes…fun times!
Ya’ll are always in my thoughts. I can’t wait to read more info about your foundation. I think it is so awesome!
Pukey babies are no fun!
My guess:
15 lbs 8 oz
25.5 inches
You are only a lousy parent if I am — I let my 11yo ward go to sleep so nasty that I had to wash his sheets the next day — I’m pretty sure that throws me off the parenting pedastal
) I’ve taken in my young friend since his mother was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia the Saturday before Christmas. I’ve always spent a lot of time with him – but this quasi-mom thing – this is all new territory… bumpy, rocky, hissy fit laden territory… praying for you both, and don’t worry, they make it through puking.. just make sure she doesn’t choke… my guess is 26-3/4 inches and 17 pounds 3 ounces…
16 lbs, nine oz (maybe it’s more though, i know i pack on the weight around the holidays…)
27.5 inches (she looks tall; damn she is catching up to me, i think i’m barely 61 inches)
Matt – this post made me laugh so much because I know exactly what you went through! I just spent my yesterday with my daughter throwing up on the way out the door of the dr’s office. Then again in her car seat on the drive home (same choking scary moment and all), then again once we were home several more times. Tried to get some pedialite into her but she’s too picky to drink it. I’m a single parent myself and since I was alone covered in baby goo, her covered, the carseat, my car, any place I moved her, I just thought where do I begin! Do I clean everything up, do I comfort her while instead while we’re both dripping in goo, do I try and give her pedialite?! ahh, the joys!
So just so you know, you are so not alone, everyday is a whole new wonderful challange.
P.S. I had planned on writing to say that I always love the outfits you put Maddy in, very creative and adorable. You two are a great team. Thanks for sharing your amazing stories. Its nice to hear from other single parents out there in the world.
I also grew up right near where the photo at the bottom of your page was taken….small world.
My guess is 18.25 lbs and 26.75 inches. This is my first crack at this- and I don’t have any little ones of my own yet so don’t laugh or be offended!!!
I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now and I’m so inspired by you. I pray for you and Maddy often.
I think your wardrobe choices are exquisite. My guess is Maddy is 25.7 inches and 15.12 lbs. I hope she is feeling better.
You are so not a bad father for leaving her in the same clothes for bed. I do it too, sometimes they just fall asleep before you have a chance to change them! M is so beautiful, but I know you get that alot. I think of you and your daughter often as I have a daughter close in age.
My guess 16 lbs 12 oz 26 1/4 inches
26.5 inches
17 lbs 3 oz
and don’t worry about not chaning her clothes daily… we forgot to bathe Aiden for a week lol. We bathe him normally every 2-3 days because of eczema in the winter… last night it hit me, we hadn’t given him a bath since the morning of January 1st! Into the tub he went.
16lbs, 11 ounces. You have so many great friends that talk you through the hard times. Madaline will appreciate this one day!
Weight: 19.1lb
Height: 27.7″
The dress + jeans combo rocked. Bra.Vo. Liz is surely so proud of you.
Sorry about the pukey phase. At least she’s handling it like a champ.
long time reader, first time commenter. i have tears strolling down my face and they are a combination of happy and sad tears. i think all of us parents can related to the feeling of helplessness you experience when your infant is sick. it’s rough because they can’t talk to you. you and maddie are so inspiring. it’s been two years since my “baby” was an actual baby, but here goes . . . 28″ and 20lbs.
25.2 inches tall and 16.4 lbs (on account of vomitfest 2009 I deducted a little but of weight.) Hope your little puker is feeling better. (if you have time send along those writing samples we spoke about. no pressure though)
Hope she is all better!
17.25 lbs
27.1 inches
My 8 month old has yet to be sick, so thank you for writting about your experience and that you made it though. I’m just waiting for the day when I’ll be covered in green vomit as well. Now I feel a little more prepared (and think I should stock up on pedilyte now)
16.2 lbs and 26 inches is my guess.
Matt…have been reading your blog for quite some time, but haven’t commented before. You are truly doing a fantastic job with raising your most adorable daughter (although your wife would probably be telling you that you do shit wrong, well…because that’s what us wives do!).
Also wanted to say that as a 33 y/o, RN, & mother of 4 (under the age of 6.5!)…I still shed many ‘tears because I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing’ (especially with the dreaded ‘firsts’). So no worries there, you’re completely normal! Glad Maddy is on the mend!
17.1 LBS, 25.91 INCHES
Hi Matt and Maddy. I am one of the lurking strangers…I really have enjoyed reading your blog over the past 4-5 months and wish both you both the best.
I think I live really close to your BF AJ. I drive by the creepy bunny and dine at Dominguez frequently.
Height: 27.75 in
Weight: 15.5 lbs
17 lbs 3 oz and 26.2 inches. Hope she is feeling better!
24.95 inches and 15.95 lb
Happy new year to you and Maddie!
26 inches
15.2 pounds
My mom would tell me that the puke-y nights are what really make you a parent. The smiles are fun, the illnesses are the gauntlet.
27.25 inches and 16.75lbs.
I love love love the dress over jeans picture!
I also along with everyone else hope Maddy is feeling better. They recover so quick but it seems like eternity and you wish you could take their place and be sick for them.
25.50″
16.56 lbs
I must admit, I’m a little bit jealous of Maddy’s wardrobe! She is always dressed so great. Myself I could never understand why parents would change a child’s clothing so often even if the clothing was perfectly clean. So why wake a peaceful sleeping baby just to put them in pj’s. Hopefully she’s feeling better and whatever she had has worked its way out of her system… besides by way of her mouth that is! As for her measurements, I would say 16 lbs 12 oz and 26.2 inches tall.
16.5 lb 25.5 inches
I remember going in for my son’s 9 mo checkup, I thought he was never going to stop growing, I had all these clothes for summer and thought oh crap if he keeps growing at this rate none of them are going to fit him, I was wrong they really steady off with the weight once they are mobile. How’s her crawling coming along? As always she’s adorable and you’re doing a fantastic job!
15 lbs
25.2 inches
Love reading your blog and seeing your pictures. Sounds like you’re on the way to a better 2009!
17 lbs 4oz
27.40 inches
and isn’t it amazing just how much they can actually vomit, like where the hell is it all coming from?
She’s so stylish and beautiful, you’re doing a great job dad.
she’s such a cutie. and i think you’re more cut out for the fashion shit than you choose to admit.
15 lbs, 10 oz
25.5 in
26″
16.5 lbs
I love Maddy’s tshirt in the last picture, how funny!
I agree with the other parents, puking is no fun with the little ones. Keep up the good work Matt, you are doing a wonderful job with Maddy. She keeps getting cuter by the day!
My guess: 16 lbs, 8 oz. and 26 inches
Hope she’s feeling better!
16 lbs 12 oz
26 inches
Puking in the car is the worst! Been through that experience too many times with my children and hate taking the seats apart to wash everything. I am happy for Maddy and you that she is feeling better!
I am going to guess 26.5 inches and 16lbs 2oz
I am thinking she is going to be 25in and 16.5 lbs. She is getting so big!!
17.9 pounds
27.25 inches
26 1/2 inches
17 lb 1 oz
You are such an awesome dad!!
I love the dress/jeans combo! Stylin’!
I’m going to have to guess 25.1 inches, and 14.6 lbs.
Hi there, I’m another stalker.
Thank you for sharing your life with us all. A good friend of mine just lost her husband on Tuesday…she has 3 small boys. Devastating.
Maddy is beautiful…you are a lucky man.
My guess:

27.2 inches
16 lbs 9 oz
Btw, I loved the onesie, dress, jeans outfit. You’re pretty good at the fashion shit!
Cool news about the non-profit!
Oh, man. The first stomach virus/pukefest is never fun and it freaks every parent out. I think I stayed awake for more than 24 hours when my son got his first one – I was so afraid he was going to vomit and then choke on it. Sounds like you handled it really well!
I recently found your blog and have spent the last week catching up. I am totally in awe of you. So my guess is,
weight- 15.9
height- 25.75
Congrats on making it through the vomit stage. It will get easier with time and the panic is only natural. also congrats on the teeth, hopefully they are not razor sharp yet (it hurts when they bite your finger)
I think Maddy weighs 15.7 lbs and she is 26.35 inches tall
16.1lbs and 26.25 inches
Hi, I have never left a comment here before, very cute oytfit, and I will say 14.4lbs 26.4 inches
I’m going with…..

Just a quick note that you’re doing an amazing job, Matt! You’re one hell of a father and Maddy is blessed to have you.
And mad props for handling the vomit so well- give me blood and bruises any time. I do no do vomit well.

16.5 in, 16.5 lbs
Glad she’s feeling better!
Beans, beans are good for the heart
The more you eat, the more you…
Darn it. Projectile vomit just doesn’t scan.
And they never tell you about that in the Contented Baby Book, either. All that stress when they are ill makes up quite a handful, and sometimes a pretty smelly handful at that.
But on the upside, at least that lovely new dress was green.
Some might imagine there’s no time for tears when you’re mopping up the green stuff. But it really makes that worse — so very hard to quell the panic attacks about managing all on your own when everything’s all mixed up with grief. Thankfully all Maddie’s smiles can help a bit.
Here’s my best guess (weight has been scientifically adjusted for recent fluid loss):
15 lbs 2oz
26.3 cm
Spirits up.
LOVE the dress/jeans combo- I do that with my girls, too.
16.65 lbs.

Oh and I should say if she is a real woman she packed on the lbs during the holidays like the rest of us
As Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, I can assure you that not changing your child’s clothes at least 3 times each day is unacceptable.
Vivienne Westwood will be arriving shortly with a Prada bag to pick up Madeline and take her to a safe house in Paris

And OMG, you got me cracking up outloud at work when I saw your dress-over-the-jeans outfit. Matt, you are a stitch. And you’re doing a fine job as Daddy to your girl.
As usual, she’s the cutest, lovliest baby! You’re doing an amazing job…I can only imagine what my husband would have my kids dressed like in your position. Not pretty kitty. Liz IS proud of you for all of it!

I love the layered look on Madeline! She is a beautiful little girl and you are an amazing father, Matt. Your blog is inspirational. Your photographs are stunning.
I’m going with a solid 15.2 lbs and 25.4 inches
Wow. I had forgotten how frightening the first bout with vomit is, and can’t imagine doing it alone. You did all the right things, though, sounds like. You are also kicking ass in the wardrobe dept – that is one well-dressed kid. Hope Madeline is feeling better and you are still feeling fine.
Oh! my guess: 26 inches tall
Weight 17 lbs 2 oz.
I can’t handle puke! My ex used to handle that but now that I am a single parent I’m not sure what I am going to do!!! No worries about the fashion cause she always looks super cute!
My guess is 16 lbs 2 oz and 25.3 inches tall!

Happy 2009 Matt and Madeline. I hope this year brings you much joy and if/when there are tears, they are of laughter.
Hopefully Maddy’s feeling better (and doesn’t pass her bug onto you!) As long as she’s stopped throwing up, I’ll put her weight at 18lbs 4 oz and height at 25 5/8″.
Madeline is truly one of the happiest (and most beautiful) babies I have seen – you are doing an amazing job with her. And she with you
Wishing you both the best.
Hi Matt. I have been following your blog for sometime now. I live in the Northern MN. I am constantly amazed at how well you are doing with your daughter. I think you are an awesome father to Madeline. I have two little girls 4yr, and 19mo and know how hard it can be to take care of them but never ever could I imagine being a single parent. Hang in there, it seems you are doing a spectacular job!!
My guess for Madeline’s Height is 27in. and Weight 16 lb 7oz.

Asalamu Alaykom,
Those are scary moments when we know that our child’s health is out of our control. OVERWHELMED is the right word. The only way I get through those moments is prayer. Seriously, life as a parent—let alone a single parent—is waaaaaaaay overwhelming.
May Miss Madeline’s good health and growth continue and may all the prayers for her and her daddy be answered.
Geez, did all the crazies come out to comment today or what?
Anyway, coming by to say that I love little Miss Fashionista’s outfit – good job Dad on putting that one together. I hope she is feeling much better, there is nothing worse than watching your children be sick and not being able to do anything about it. Big cyber hug being sent from my coast to yours.
Congratulations on making it through your first stomach bug, and I love the jeans/onesie/dress combo!!
As for the height/weight, I’m guessing 16lbs., 14oz. and 26 inches tall.
I’m going 5′ 9″, deuce and a half.
or
she just got fricken BIG.
From one single parent to another..
Matt, you rock.. you’ve got it goin’ on..
Awesome….
Madeline is a doll, goes without saying though!! Outfits ador..Loved the Dr.’s office outfit!!
26 3/4″, 16lbs, 1oz.
Hell no, it doesn’t make you a bad father for her wearing the same clothes several days in a row. Makes you a completely normal/good parent. Sam wears the same clothes for days in a row too! It is not like the do much in them to get dirty! I love her wardrobe and I love how you dress her. she is sooooo fashionable! I think you do an awesome job styling her. Just wait till she wants to dress her self and you see some of the wild things she will choose.
My guess: 16 lbs 9 oz and 26 1/4 ”
I am always way off. Sucks.
So sorry Madeline was sick like that, poor thing. It is always so sad.
She’s a gorgeous gal!! You’re doing an amazing job Daddy! My guess is 15.8 lbs and 26 inches. Wish me luck!

25.25 inches, 16 lbs, 2 oz.
She is such a cutie!
My 14-year-old daughter likes to sleep in her clothes sometimes so she doesn’t have to change in the morning. I may be a bad mom for letting her, but you see when you get to 14!
I think Maddy is THEE best dressed little girl I have EVER seen. I love to see her different outfits everyday. You’re doing an amazing job. I especially love the photos of you two hanging out on the couch. You look so natural and happy together.
I’m going to guess 16.6 inches tall and 15.5 lbs (because of all the puking).
17 lb 6 oz

Every inch and ounce adorable.
Can’t resist a good guessing game:
26.75 inches tall, 17 lbs,4 oz

I think it’s fine for Maddy to wear the same outfit two days in a row. My husband says he’d never do it — but I know he would. And, it was a very cute outfit. Hope she’s feeling better from “Pukefest” — it must be nationwide. My little one had it Thursday.
My guess is 15 lbs, 13oz and 26.1 inches
HI,
I guess 16 and half pounds and 26.75 inches. The outfits are too cute. I haven’t had projectile vomit yet, BIG FEAR!
On another note, a guy at my husbands work wife died suddenly at 32 leaving him a single parent and I wanted to tell him about some resource websites, plus, he just started on the job and didn’t take out the spouse life insurance policy because they needed the money and my husband and I donated to the office fund for him, and of course you guys came to mind for the best know how to recommend to him for my husband. I just feel so bad and want to help my husband, plus he always jokes that I am addicted to the computer. your stranger friend
I am glad Maddy is better….She sure is growing….
My guess is 26.8 inches and 19 lbs 8 oz..
My son, Tyler only gained 1 lb from 9month to his 1 yr appt…
Glad you made thru the holidays..You are a strong dad with so many people who love you and Maddy….
Keep up the awesome job you do.. You encourage me to get out of bed sometimes….You have made me realize how blessed my life is and I look forward to the upcoming news you have to share with us….
omg….is it possible for this child to get cuter by the day?!?! LOVE the jeans under the dress!! She’s such a fashionista!! And I must mention I LOVE the sweater you are wearing in those pics of the 2 of you….which are priceless btw.
I am going to FLIP when she starts walking and talking!
My guess for Maddy is 17 lbs 8 oz and 27.50 inches!!
Hey Matt!

My guess is 16.5 lbs & 26.75 inches
this is my first time to your blog..found it from mssinglemama (my first time to her blog as well). i am a single woman adopting internationally and tonight i decided to google single parenting and voila. your daughter is totally adorable and you are doing an amazing job! she’s happy and thriving.
here’s my (totally wild) guess:
15 pounds 6 oz.
25.5″
Hi!
I say 26 inches and 15.7lbs. I think your jean/dress/onsie outfit was inspired. I also wanted to ask you about some camera advice. I will be taking a dig photo class and am looking for a new SLR camera. Something that I can grow into as I learn more. If you get a chance and have some input shoot me an email.
Judy K
My guess:
17 pounds, 12 ounces and 27 inches tall. I love the bows in Maddy’s hair. So girly! You continue to get my vote for father of the year!
Love that picture of you and Maddy below…
26.25 inches and 16lb,4oz
18.7
24.6
I’m glad she has such a good daddy to help her feel better!
I think she is 15.85 inches long and 16.1lbs.
First off, here’s to a better 2009! Love the new site. ABSOLUTELY LOVE your choices in clothing for Maddy! Onsie, jeans and a dress?!?! You did an awesome job. And I love how you do her hair! Hope she is feeling better. Glad you survived the first of many times like that to come.
My guesses are 18.4 lbs and 28.2 inches
Uhh that should read TWENTY-5.85 inches and 16.1 lbs! Ooops. I have her shrinking on you.
Love the outfits. She’s a lucky girl.
Weight: 16lbs 10oz
Height: 26in
My guess is 15lb 2oz and 27in 4cm…hope she is feeling healthy and continues to be happy. You are such a good dad…I give you a lot of credit for taking care of that little lady. You should be so proud of her…and yourself!!
i hate to comment when there are like 500 but after scanning the first couple hundred, i noticed no one admitted this (or maybe you and i really are the only two parents who are actually lame enough to do this) BUT…
if she’s wearing something comfy, my daughter ALWAYS wears it to bed! and if it’s still relatively clean (ie: looks decent after one swipe of a wet rag) she definitely wears it the next day. i even pushed it to three days over christmas break.
so…i don’t know, we may be bad parents, but at least we’re not alone.
I’m going to guess 17 lb 6.5oz and 27.25 inches tall.
She’s a cutie! And I LOVE the bows in her hair!
OK I know I’m late but I’ll guess anyways for the heck of it. 16.2 lbs and 25.75 inches.
Although she probably lost a bit of weight the last few days from the pukefest…sorry about that!
I’m wondering how much I’d need to allow in weight for the afternoon of vomiting….
(yes, sometimes i don’t change her into pajamas before she goes to bed…does that make me a bad father?)
The answer is NO. But that’s why it’s known as “daddy wear”. HA.
Love, Suzanne
I am also late but what the heck!!
26.3 inches
16lbs 3 oz
Matt you are doing awesome!!
You are a fashion king! Love the dress over the jeans, she reminds me of cindy lu who(grinch) and I mean that in a GOOD way. That kid is damn cute!!!! Love the jeans outfit in the last picture too! You rock! I see you opening your own childrens clothing line in the future Matt!
Very Glad that Maddy is feeling better too!
Who invented pajamas and decided we had to sleep in them anyway?? When one of my kids was a toddler, he liked to sleep naked. I’d check on him in bed to find he’d taken off all his clothes . Like a good mom I would dutifully jammie him up again only to have him peel himself buck naked again the minute I left the room. I finally caught on……it doesn’t matter! Sleeping little people are happy little people. Hey also Matt, I travel for work a lot and wanted you to know, I used to wander airports looking for Starbucks. The past few months when I’m in an airport, I find myself scanning the crowds of people looking for you and Maddy. Next time you’re in the tunnel at O’Hare riding the moving sidewalks past all the neon, don’t be surprised if you hear a shout-out from someone waving on the other side. Happy New Year to a great Daddy.
Hey Matt and Madeline – no guesses here, but I look forward to hearing the results! I know you probably get more comments than you can read, but just wanted to stop by and say that I’m still reading, still amazed and inspired, still enjoying every word, always rooting for you both and happy to hear that all is as well as can be. And a couple comments on the parenting stuff – keeping her in the same outfit for more than one day means slightly less laundry, so if it’s clean why not, right?! And unfortunately, those illness never become less worrisome with time or experience. I can tell you for a fact that whether or not you did it alone, the emotions would likely be the same (I’ve done it both ways, so of that I am sure). I’m honestly just hoping that your next post isn’t about you throwing up green beans and more about you dodging that bug and having fun with your smiling, happy, healthy baby.
Thanks again as always for sharing your life with us strangers.
I have no guess, just wanted to say thank you for writing so honestly about how much this path we are on sucks (my husband died a year ago). I have older children, so I think I can say, with a wee bit of authority — you are an awesome daddy and your are doing a fabulous job.
I’m glad I found your blog.

I’m so glad that I’ve found your blog that I’ve given you an award. It’s silly, but I mean it. You have to go to my entry (http://txmomx6.blogspot.com/2009/01/feeling-better.html) to see it.
I’m sure you’ve received a lot of these things, but I just wanted to say thanks for your honesty ….. and for sharing pictures of your beautiful daughter.
I just love her outfits, especially her socks. I found the same brand and picked up the “boy” version of the socks. So cute! I don’t know what my husband would dress our kids in if he had the chance. I don’t think he has ever picked their clothes. It is amazing how much that girl looks like her mama. Beautiful…..
14 lbs 12 oz, and 24 3/4″. No worries on whether she sleeps in her clothes, one of the couples I babysit for their 4year old sleeps in what he wore that day, and depending on the damage done to it, may not change all of the outfit the next day. And the puking is hopefully done, and won’t return for a while. She’s beautiful.
haha about wearing the same outfit two days in the row. We do it here as well. If they are clean why waste the money, time and envirerment by cleaning it when it really doesn’t need to be yet? Scary about the throwing up. My kids didn’t doi anything like that until they were almost 2, so I wasn’t so worried. But I know why you would feel overwhelmed without liz there. I could not begin to imagine how hard it is for you. By the way, I loved your thoughts on baby teeth. I also think your fashion choices for Maddy are awesome. I love her last shirt “Your favorite bacd suck.” That’s just fucking awesome. Hope Maddy feels better soon!
16.6 oz
26 inches
I love this little girl as much as I love my own (creepy- I know, I check the blog daily to see if you’ve posted any updates. lol)- thanks for the post.
Matt we call it “Jammie-Clothes” at our house, my big kids ask for them sometimes, so they can hit the ground running in the morning without all the hassle. (Also saves on laundry!)
I appreciate how you described Maddy’s wardrobe so matter-of-factly. cute. And there’s nothing wrong with her sleeping in her clothes. we’ve all been there, done that.
I wish my 11 month old looked HALF as stylish as Madeline. You do an amazing job of picking out her clothes & dressing her. Seriously! When you get your new foundation up & running, maybe you should start a new infant’s clothing line.
Sorry Madeline got her first stomach bug.
It sucks when you’re driving & you hear your child vomiting in the back seat. I remember that “WTF do I do?” feeling…..do I pull over? Do I just keep driving? Ugh, it sucks! FWIW, I pulled over the first time it happened to me, but then I realized that I couldn’t do anything anyway, so I just drove like hell towards home with the windows down…..
I let my twins go to bed in what they wore for bed everynight well everynight except christmas i didn’t want their dresses ruined. My first time guessing at Mady’s height and weight:
27inches
16.5 pounds
I’m late on this one but Ava bean just had her check up last week and she’s 4 months younger that Madeline but I wanted to use her height and weight to see how close they are. Ava is 27″ and 19 lbs 1 oz. So that’s my guess.
Vomiting bugs are just plain cruel aren’t they. So happy that you got through it. x
Ooh, I want to get my guess in before I read through the whole post.
Ok, here’s what MY son’s 9-month visit measurement’s were…hopefully he’ll bring me luck, fingers crossed.
19lb 3oz
28 1/4 in
Ruh-Roh. Just read that I’m past the deadline. I’m probably waaaay off anyway.
Congrats, sir, on making it through the first illness. Scary and sucky, to be sure. So go the joys of daycare! Sounds like you both did an awesome job making it through the vomit-tasticness.
Number 1…. You are not a bad parent at all for letting Maddie sleep without putting on her PJ’s…. Why Wake a sleeping child for that? I do it all the time and i think my kids are Ok for it… Number 2… if you haven’t heard of the BRAT diet… here it is…
Bananas-Rice-Apples(applesauce even) and Toast(dry)..use this for any ‘flu like syptoms…’ Sharts or pukes… Along with the pedalite of course… You Rock and are doing a Fabulous Job dad…. Love to read your Blog! Thanks for Sharing your life…
Shit, missed the deadline. Oh well. Sorry I’m way late, but I’m so sorry about the vomiting marathon Matt. You must have been scared. Vomit marathons STILL freak my shit out, but it sounds like you did GREAT! The best part is that she is too young to even care or notice that she was so barfy. Hope all is well now!
I’m simply in such awe. Your words are truly touching. As a Cancer survivor, I sense that you bring Faith and Hope to so many.
Blessings galore!
Her clothes are precious. You’re a wonderful father.
Matt! You’re driving me mad! ONE, because Madeline is the most adorable female speciman to ever grace this earth (and cyberspace) with her presence and fashion, and TWO because of all the hype about some “big news” you have to share. Chrissy wrote about it on Storked! today and I must find out soon. OMG. Wishing you the best, today and always.
I’m doing a 365 blog where you take a picture a day for a year. I know you like taking pictures and thought…hmm..that would be a cute idea to take a picture of Madeline maybe from one birthday to the next for a year
Just an idea! She is so pretty and you’re a good Dad and she’ll be so happy to have all these photos you’ve been taking of her when she’s older!!!
Of course it doesnt make you a bad dad to let her sleep in her clothes- if it does my husband is a bad dad too, and so am I! Maddy is just precious. You are so lucky to have her, a part of Liz that will always be with you. I read your story in People, today. I can see the love you have for her and she for you in your eyes.
God bless.
your baby looks adorable!!!!
you have done so good!
i know its hard taking care of a little one but you have been doing a great job. keep up the good work…
Matt, if the clothes were clean and she was happy sleeping, it’s okay to sleep in her clothes. Hell, there are days when I wish I could just crash in mine. Vinegar gets the smell of puke out, by way. Who knew?? LOL. She should be feeling better soon. It’s always sad when you can’t take away that crappy feeling. Stay warm and stomach flu bug free!
Hi Matt… You don’t know me, but I am Eileen Scahill’s (Peter Miriani’s girlfriend) mom. Eileen has kept me up to date on you from day one. I just want to say that you are amazing and that your Madeline is just beautiful. I am so sorry for your loss, but so glad to see that you are doing well and you are a super dad !!
I haven’t posted in a while, or read actually. Started a new job and can’t really get online at work. Miss this site sooo much. Hard to get on b/c I have an 11 1/2 month old who is into everything!
Just wanted to say congrats on the great story in the most recent People magazine……great photos and anyone who reads People are going to be logging in and seeing what all the fuss is about……and of course, they will fall in love with you the way we all did! Hope all is well and Maddie is as cute as ever…….getting cuter actually!!!
Matt, I just read your article in People’s magazine and it hit a very sensitive nerve in my heart! We have much in common! My first son, Brad was born 2 days before his dad died. My life went off course for several years as I know you can imagine! My heart is with you as the healing process takes many years! Please contact me… I’m sure we would have alot to talk about!
Sincerely, Cindy Titus
a bad father? hardly
you are doing a fine job my friend.
a fine job indeed – Madeline is stunning and robust; such a happy child!
you are doing a great job..she is a lucky little girl to have a dad like you
Just read your story in People Magazine, Jan 26th issue. I was very touched by your story and just wanted to send my best to you and Madeline. It sounds like you are doing a terrific job raising her. She is beautiful. Good luck to you and Madeline. She has a wonderful father, she should feel very proud someday.
i think your amazing. i have a little boy myself. he’s 5 1/2 months.
i’m guessing her weight to be 16lbs. and 26ins.
i know it’s hard….i think of my husband everday…
You have a beautiful daughter….Very touching story
I imagine now that the story has been printd in People that you will be overwhelmed with new posters. I just wanted to say I think you ar amazing and I am SOOOOO sorry for yor loss. I too had complications at the end of my pregnancy and ended up with emergency c-section. It is scarey and you wonder if it will be OK, you just never know. I am sorry for your and maddy’s loss and lizs’ loss for that matter. To have the love you 2 had (have, I do not consider it lost in death) and to make such a beautiful creature from that love. You are blesssed even in your pain and for whatever you believe spiritually, you will not be given more than you can handle. You 2 will find strength in each other thru the years as you remember LIz and as you tell stories of your love, you will teach maddy what love truely is. MY heart goes out to you, it truely does
I have 2 little ones of my own and I can not imagine what it would be like for them had i been lost in childbirth or even if something happened to daddy. Loss is always heartwrenching but inspires deep growth and spiritual developement>
Hey Matt. Elizabeth in Seattle here again. Your comment: “what he fuck I can’t believe I just wrote that!” about Maddy’s outfit description made me laugh out loud. My son had the projectile vomit gig at about 8 months, it sucks. Luckily there’s the fact that you’re getting more practice at baby fashion than you bargained for to keep you laughing through all of this!
Hey, if the Liz foundation would like to do a walk up here in Seattle in the fall, I’d be happy to help organize. I recently left a non-profit board, have a bit more time. Let me know. All best. Elizabeth
I just read your touching story in the People Mag. I am so sorry to hear about you beaut6iful wife, Liz.
I am a Nana of two grandchildren and live close to LA. If Maddy needs a west coast Nana please let me know as my heart has plenty of room for another.
My daughter use to work at the Grand California Hotel at Disneyland, I don’t know where Liz worked but maybe they knew each other. Maddy is so precious, let me know if I can help.

My 5 year old daughter used to go to bed in her clothes every now and then and still does sometimes. She also sometimes likes to sleep in one of my shirts. It in no way makes you a bad dad. Madeline is so cute. It looks like you two have a lot of fun together. She is so lucky to have you. I’m a single mother and raising a child by myself has been the hardest, most rewarding experience ever. My daughter and I are so close. You look like you are a wonderful dad, if only more men were like you.
Hi my name is desiree i read your story in people… so sad. I can never say i feel your pain or fully understand. i am lucky not to be a single mother my son has a great dad. We do have a few things in common and from your story i wish i would have known more. My son Tristen was born 9-11-08 he was 6 days late and only weighed 4lbs 15oz, i also lost all my fluid but didn’t know untill the ultrasound the morning of my c section at 9 that morning i had 9% and when the dr busted my water there was nothing so after they tried to induce me and no progress my son was taken at 11:24pm, he was perfectly healthy thank you God. It’s kinda funny i was reading how Maddie went to the dr for her check up and in sep and weighed 13lbs 13oz on 1-12-09 we went for our four month and Tristen weighed 13lbs 12oz, he caught up fast. i just wanted to say you have a beautifull little girl and you have done a great job being a mommy and a daddy and sometimes Tristen wears the same outfit two days in a roll too lol. it’s people like you and your story that make life so much more worth while you sure have made you spot in heaven right next to your beautifull wife, but remember you have a whole life with her through your daughters eyes.
I just wanted to let you know that i just started reading your blog today, after i read your srticle in people magazine. I want to commend you for being a great dad, those are hard to find these days. You have a beautiful, precious little girl who seems to be thiving perfectly. I hope everything was a-ok on her last drs visit. Good luck with everything you chose to do, and god bless you, Maddy and Liz……….she is watching you and her daughter and I bet she would be proud of the father you turned out to be and the daughter Maddy is turning into. Im officially addicted to your website now…….keep up the blogging!!!!!!
I too read the article in People magazine and decided to check out your blog. As a 1st time parent to a daughter named Madeleine or as we call her Maddy (6 months old), I really relate to the things you are going through. I can only imagine how tough it is to go through them alone. Your daughter is very lucky to have such a wonderful and devoted parent. Maddy will not remember that you didn’t change her into pjs at night but she will remember all of the time you two spend together. I can’t wait to see what you two get into!
I read your story in People and was deeply moved. I was in the hospital on strict bedrest for 100 days and delivered my son at 32 weeks. via c-section. Your story reminds me how truly lucky and blessed I am. From your pictures you are doing an excellent job and should be voted “father of the year.” Maddy is adorable. You must know that Liz is looking down from heaven and smiling at the wonderful job you are doing. God bless you and Maddy.
animal collective album—i’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s 2009’s best album of the year (who cares if it’s only january??). it’s definitely my favorite album of the year SO far.
madeline looks beautiful! hope mexico was fun.
Matt and Maddy – your article in People was awesome! When you said you were going to be in there I was thinking a one-pager, I was so excited to see you got a full spread (much deserved). The pictures were fabulous. As shitty as it is the way in which this came to be, I am pretty damn sure Liz would be LOVING that you made People! Hope you are having a great week!
Matt,
I also read about you in People. I am very sad for you and the loss you and Maddy have suffered. You appear to be doing an awesome job though because Maddy looks like a very happy baby. Your wife would be proud. I look forward to reading your blog to keep up with you and Maddy. All the best to you both.
After seeing your article in People, I came to your blog and read the WHOLE thing… It’s taken a week. After a while, I couldn’t remember how I came to be reading it but then uncovered the People magazine buried on my desk — an “oh, right” moment. You are doing a GREAT job… Please make a back-up of everything you’ve got here!! Someday Madeline is going to look at all this and be so proud of her dad.
Your daughter is absolutely beautiful and extremely lucky to have you as her father!
(I hardly ever put my kids into their PJs before bedtime either!)
I read your story in People and you’re doing everything that I a dad who loves his little girl would do. Today is my daughter’s 4th birthday and her father and I remind her everyday about his mother who was shot and killed by his father the day after we found out we were pregnant. She was the first to know and cried she was so happy. He always says it was the happiest day followed by the saddest. I am truly touched by your and Maddy’s story. I know Liz is watching over you both and is very proud.
Matt. You are the best Daddy EVER. Liz would be so proud of you. I am, and I don’t even know you aside from reading your blog, which captivates me. You and Maddie are lucky to have each other. Keep up the good work.
I, also read the article in People Magazine and i very sorry about your loss. I’m sure there are moments that you feel that you can’t do it anymore but you have to be proud because you are doing a great job. Maddie couldn’t wish for a better father! she must be proud of you and her only way of showing it to you is with her sincere smile. isn’t that great! i bet she means everything to you. and i know you mean everything for her.
goog luck!
keep raising your daughter the way you r doing.
ps’ i’m sorry if i wrote something bad. english is not my first language
Maddie couldn’t wish for a better father, and you are very lucky to have her. she is adorable!!!!
i know there are times that you must feel exhausted, alone, but you are doing great. and i bet maddie is proud of you, and her only way she can show it is with her sincere smile…. isn’t that awesome how a smile and a look can changed your day!!!
good luck!!
ps’ sorry if a made any mitake. english is my second language.
Sounds like your doing a wonderful job with lots of challenges yet to come.. I have a philosophy with my kids not to sweat the small stuff..pajamas occasonally etc. Your love and attention will grow her into a person with a free spirited personality more than the worries about the right sleeping attire. God less you and Maddie.
Can I just say that Madeline’s ‘Your favorite band sucks.’ tee is fucking awesome. I love it. Keep up the great work, she is beautiful!
Believe me, as a single parent myself, we need every single minute we can spare. As long as the outfit is clean, with no boogers or dirt, it’s perfectly fine to wear.
you are an amazing father! and maddie is beautiful!!
she always looks soooo cute i luv her clothes and shoes!! your doing great!
Hey Matt. Stumbled on to your site and have been reading it for a few days over the weekend. You are doing a great job. Our daughter is 8 months old, 2 months younger than Madeline. She’s our first and we feel for you because we too are feeling the excitement, craziness and difficulties of raising a first child. I’m sure that Liz would be proud of the work that you are doing with Madeline and happy to see how well your little girl is doing. Keep your chin up and thanks for the heads up on the projectile vomiting…(oh, I’m thinking Madeline will be 16lbs and 26 inches) PS. She’s beautiful!
In the pictures your daughter looks so big. My niece Sophia is 8 months old and she weighs 15 pounds and is 26 inches long and when I hold her she is such a peanut. You didn’t tell us how big Maddy is. I would guess she is at least 16.5 lbs and 26 1/2 inches long. She is so beautiful. She has alot of hair too.

Dearest Matt, I came across your blog via AOL and thought wow, I have got to see how this guy does it! Because I, too, lost my fiance of 12 years (a year ago Feb.) and have been raising our two children, eight yrs old and five yrs old, as a single parent. And I want to know how do I teach my children the coping skills to get thru life with out their dad if I don’t know how to do it either?! I often find myself getting upset and angry because I didn’t plan on being a single parent, he and I were suppose to do this together! That was the deal, you know? And while I was reading your (past) post about Maddy being sick and you feeling overwhelmed… I couldn’t help but cry because that is exactly how I felt when that same stomach bug whipped thru our house the night before Easter Sunday of last year! Picture my son laying on one couch that was covered with towels and sheets and his blanky and the same set up for my daughter on the love seat. Both with big buckets, on stools mind you, on the floor close to their heads (or mouths,) sippie straw thingy cups full of ginger-ale, tissues galore, and lysol spray and hand sanitizer on the coffee table. Oh and also three old milk gallon jugs full of three parts water and one part bleach willing and ready to be poured into those buckets for rinsing and repeating! All the while I am trying to sleep, sitting up, at the end of the couch that my son is occupying, evenly between both children, waiting patiently for the first sign of who was going to be sick next, trying to ward off my own symptons of an upset stomach! And I coudn’t help feeling overwhelmed, I mean the tears just poured out Matt and I couldn’t stop them! It was the first time since his passing, two months earlier, that I realized my life had really changed and that I was really in this for the long haul with out the help, support, encouragement, patience, words of reason, love (etc.) of the man I had trusted to be by my side thru it all… even throw-up! And there have been millions of times since then that I have become overwhelmed and upset because I just wanted to (and still do) feel his arms around me and hear him say “Everything will be ok, your doing a great job, I am so proud of you and I love you!” I just want to feel that security and that safeness that I felt with him because I knew that everything really would be ok as long as we had each other! The kids and I have amazingly some how made it thru the year of the firsts (aside from his one year anniv. that is a week away) which was no easy task and I can’t help but think of all the other milestones that he is going to miss out on and that we are going to miss him experiencing! For instance, I turn 30 this year (as would he) and we had been talking about going away to celebrate us entering this new chapter in our lives since we hadn’t really done much for ourselves in years and had committed ourselves to being the best parents we could be. And our daughter starts kindergarten in Sept. and it is going to break my heart with it just being me standing there smiling, waving, and taking pictures because that was def. something my fiance was good at, being there for his family! He never missed anything that had to do with our kids because he knew how important it was for us (we both had absent parents) and our children. Also our son, he was the star soccer player this year! I was so proud of him because he worked hard out there on the field, Coaches are still calling to see if he’ll be on their team this Spring. And I know that not having his dad there affected him, because he was our sons biggest cheerleader but, I think (or I hope) our son took that sadness and turned it into determination. Especially when at the end of the season he was recognized as the MVP, he asked me if I thought his dad would be proud of him right now? I guess I really need to know how to not be so angry at him for leaving us and to somehow be able to, not necessarily move on (I hate how that sounds) but, start to live our lives again and learn to live them with out him? If you have any advice please let me know, we could trade stories and I could possibly help you with the next time Maddy gets one of those (terrific) daycare/preschool sicknesses considering we have had them all. I have become a pro at those and boo-boo’s LOL! Hope to maybe hear back from you but, if not I wish you all the luck and you and Maddy will be in our prayers. P.S. I was telling my son about your blog and your story and my son said to me and I quote “That makes me sad because atleast I got to have 7 1/2 years with my daddy and she didn’t even get to be with her mommy! I hope her daddy will tell her that she will always have an angel with her to watch over her and to keep her safe like my daddy does for me!”
dad is a mechanic – plenty of shamwows around for washing up cars – i tried cleaning up puke with one once…….so so results..
No it doesn’t make you a bad father, does it make me a bad mother? Funny, because I had been wondering the same thing but figured, nobody knows but me and McKenna’s father. It is just clothes, right?
Acutally I know a few people ( mostly single parents) whohave thier kids go to sleep in the clothes they will wear the next day. It lets the kids sleep in a bit. I don’t see that much differnet then letting them sleep in the clothes they wore all day. Espically if they fell asleep in them. Never wake a sleeping baby!
I love how detailed you are! You don’t forget a single one! It makes the reading that much more enjoyable! And your pics along with the stories…priceless! I’m a fan!!!!!!! Saw you on the Rachel Ray show today, my heart goes out to you and your lil sunshine. -Jill
im almost 27 and sleep in the same clothes i wore that day….and wear them the next. does that make me a bad adult?
