monday – thursday.

monday morning.

5th day of the

new year.

we woke up,

rested and ready to

get back into

our routines.

maddy slept in

her clothes from yesterday

before daycare.

(yes, sometimes i don’t change her into pajamas before she goes to bed…does that make me a bad father?)

and still looked

cute the next morning

so i left her in

the same outfit.

before daycare.

(yes, i sometimes she wears the same outfit two days in a row. does that make me a really bad father?)

we got out the

door really fast

and made it to

daycare in record time.

i brought a

smiling maddy inside

and lupe said,

“she’s so happy to be here! i thought she wouldn’t want to be here after being away for so long!”

yeah. me too.

but she was thrilled

to be back

amongst her friends.

i said goodbye

and went to work.

tough to concentrate

after so many

days away, but i

i got a call

in the morning

that gave me something

to look forward to.

katrina, my old friend

from grad. school

called to let me

know that she is

in the so.cal

and hoped to take

us out for dinner.

i assured her

that we had nothing

to do, so

we planned to

meet later that evening.

the rest of the

day went by

fast, and soon

enough it was time

to pick maddy up

from daycare.

she was on the

floor trying to

crawl when i walked in.

i said,

“hi maddy”

and she spun

around to see me,

liz

sized smile on her face.

and there were

those teeth…

i can sorta

see them.

i was so scared

she was gonna

look weird with teeth,

like maybe she

wasn’t going to

be as cute

anymore, but i think

the teeth are actually

going to enhance

her beauty.

we headed home

and i tried my

best to pick

up the house

before katrina arrived.

no luck…the cab

dropped her off and the

doorbell rang before i even

got one suitcase moved

into another room.

katrina came in,

carrying a bag of

groceries and a

gift for maddy.

she offered to cook

me dinner, which

was sweet,

but i told her that

we better go

out to dinner

because all of the

tables in my house

are covered with stuff.

she took one look

at the kitchen and

dining room tables

and agreed that

going out would

be a better option.

before dinner, we

spent a little time

catching up

(we haven’t seen each other in a few years)

and talking

about the past.

she insisted that

maddy open her gift,

and we played with

it while katrina

took some photos.

playing with the toy from katrina.

then it was

time to head out.

we decided to hit

the indian restaurant

in the los feliz.

maddy slept through

the entire meal,

giving us a

chance to finish up

our conversation.

we talked about

a lot of things.

the sociologist in her

had so many questions

about the blog

and the community that

has formed around it.

we talked a lot about

liz,

and how maddy

and i are doing.

after dinner, we dropped her

off at union

station and headed home.

went to bed

around 1:00am.

fell asleep satisfied

that i got to

catch up with

an old friend.

tuesday.

day six of the new year.

we woke up early

and i actually put

maddy into a

different outfit today,

an outfit that

made me beam

with pride.

before daycare.

before daycare.

i layered a onesie

under a dress,

with a pair

of jeans under

the dress.

before daycare.

(what the fuck? i can’t believe i just wrote that, let alone did it.)

i’ve said it

before and i’ll

say it again…

i was not cut out

for this fashion shit,

but for

liz,

and madeline,

i’m doing my best.

we went to

our respective offices

and spent our day

doing our work.

during my work day

i got an

e-mail from someone,

inviting madeline

to an extremely

cool event this saturday.

(details to follow).

i called the woman

to accept the invitation,

and thanked her

for the incredible opportunity.

later i picked

maddy up and we

went home.

we spent the evening

on the couch,

hanging out on the couch.

we have the same smile.

hanging out on the couch.

reading and listening to

some music.

maddy’s talking evolved

from “da da da da”

to “ma ma ma ma” tonight,

which made me cry.

this is fucking hard.

she fell asleep around

8:30 and i set out

to do a little writing.

went to bed

about 2:30,

worrying again how

i’m gonna explain all

of this to

our daughter someday.

wednesday.

7 days into 2009.

the day started

off great.

i got maddy dressed

and we worked on

her xylophone playing,

before daycare.

and by xylophone playing,

i mean eating the mallet.

before daycare.

we laughed and smiled together

before daycare.

before heading out

the door.

i made it to

work and in my

inbox i found

an e-mail from our lawyer.

(creep becky’s husband).

a lawyer

working pro bono on

behalf of

the liz logelin foundation.

the e-mail

let me know

that he had filed

some of the necessary

paperwork to get

this thing off the ground.

wow.

after months

of discussion and

hard work by creeps

around the world,

(and very little help from me),

our non-profit org.

is taking shape.

soon we’ll be

finalizing some fundraising

events, getting a

website up and

running, and organizing

a big event for

the second annual walk/run

in sept.

(lots and lots of details to follow as they become available).

and to see my

name listed as “president?”

scary.

(and yes. it’s too early to call for my impeachment).

within months we should

be able to start

helping young families that

have lost a mother or a father.

thanks to everyone

who has helped

so far, and thanks

in advance to

all the folks

i’ll be putting

to work in the future.

feeling great,

i got back to work.

at 1:30 i got

a call from

maddy’s daycare.

“is this madeline’s dad?”

“uh, yeah. this is.”

“madeline has thrown up 5 or six times in the last hour.”

“shit. i’ll be right there.”

i ran out the door,

as fast as i

could, got to my

car and realized

that i didn’t

have my keys.

fuck!

i never forget my keys.

why now?

ran back in,

got them and

made it back

to my car.

i’m not sure i

touched a step

on my way down,

up or down the stairs.

got to the daycare,

and found maddy in

lupe’s arms.

madeline looked really pale,

but she started smiling

and laughing when she

saw me.

i grabbed her from

lupe and as soon

as i did,

there was a waterfall

of green vomit

spewing from her mouth.

“green beans”

lupe said.

that’s the first time

i’ve seen her

throw up like that.

i was scared.

i asked a bunch of

questions, got to

the car and started

making some phone calls.

called her pediatrician’s office.

fuck.

closed for lunch.

i started to

feel overwhelmed.

i called sonja, the

pediatrician i don’t pay,

and she gave me

the info i needed.

i felt overwhelmed again.

how am i going

to pick up the

pedialyte and the

other stuff i need

with a baby projectile vomiting?

this is where

our partnership

would have come in handy.

liz

could have run to

target while i held

maddy and cleaned

up vomit with a towel

(thought…do shamwows soak up vomit?).

or it could have

been the other

way around.

but it’s not,

and i have to figure

this shit out

all on my own.

(another reminder of how difficult single parents have it).

and here come

the tears again.

tears because i’m overwhelmed,

tears because i miss

liz.

tears because i

have no idea what

the fuck i’m doing.

two things helped…

first, i got a call

from my friend cara

in the nyc.

she helped calm

me down and reassured

me that i could do this.

second, thankfully i have

a wonder child…

she fell asleep right

before the exit for

our house, so i decided

to make a quick

stop at the store

so i could pick

up the supplies we needed.

made it half way

through the shopping

trip before she

woke up.

i was on the phone

talking to the nurse

at the pediatrician’s office.

oh shit

i thought…

but there’s that

smile again.

she seems fine.

we left the store,

made it a few

blocks before i heard

her vomiting again

shit.

do i pull over?

do i try to mop it up

while i drive?

i pulled over ’cause

it sounded like

she was choking.

i made sure

she was fine before

getting back in

the driver’s seat and

heading home.

she threw up

two more times when

we got in the house,

then she slept

for an hour.

she woke up happy

and i started following

the instructions i got

from everyone re: the pedialyte.

she took a little

the i waited for

her to vomit.

nothing.

a little more.

vomit time?

still nothing.

another nap and then it

was time for tons

of that liquid.

she drank 4 oz

and then we both

took a nap.

we repeated this

cycle until 11:00,

then went to

bed for the evening.

i hoped that

we’d be able

to sleep through the

night, but figured

that was impossible.

thursday.

8 days in.

i woke up at

4:00am, checked on

maddy and she

was still asleep.

i went back to

sleep until 6:30am

when i heard

her talking away.

i pick her up

and gave her another

bottle full of pedialyte.

she drank it

like it was her

favorite stuff

in the world.

all morning she has

alternated naps

and bottles full

of pedialyte.

as i write this, she

is in her bouncer,

bouncing away.

we go to see

the pediatrician at 3:00

today, her regularly scheduled

9-month appointment.

i think you

know what that means…

well, of course it

means that there’s

another guess the weight

and height contest.

i’ll send a prize

(a copy of my current fav. album or book, maybe both)

to the person who

gets closest

to the actual height/weight

without going over.

you have until 11:59pm (pacific time) friday, january 9th.

to get your guess in.

in the mean time, here’s a little help…

last check-up she

was 24.5 inches tall

and weighed 13 lbs, 13 oz.

(most recent growth chart below):

she\'s growing...

(sorry for the lack of metric conversion…international readers using the metric system can submit your guesses in metric units and i’ll convert them).

so get your guesses in…

we’re off to the doctor’s office.

before her 9-month check up.

It sounds like you did everything right for Madeline, as usual. Way to make it through Pukefest 2009!

oh boy – the line – i layered a onesie under a dress, with a pair of jeans under the dress – killed me, you definitely got this style thing down. the last picture is PRICELESS – and maddy looks pretty damn healthy to me, hopefully it was just a 24h thing.

    as for my guess, i’m gonna say 17lbs 10oz and 26 1/4in.

I will guess….27 inches, 19 lbs. And I LOVE that awesome dress/jeans/onesie combo. super cute. I am glad she is feeling better…the pukey illnesses are the worst!

Oh Matt – I hope you and Maddy are doing better – and your doc visit goes well. Thank goodness for pedialyte! I still remember when my middle one was about Maddy’s age and had a bout of projectile vomiting – he didn’t keep a thing down for two days. Finally I had to sit with him and spoon feed him a teaspoon full of pedialyte every minute for two hours so it would stay down (it worked).

As for Miss Maddy’s weight and height – my guess is 16 lbs, 1oz for the weight (taking into account the few ounces she chucked up today) and 25.75 inches for the height.

matt you are doing great!! I remember when I was a first time mom and my son did the same pojectile thing when my husband was out of town for the weekend!! Totally disgusting, but for some reason I didn’t gag because it was MY son, and not someone else’s.

Matt, you’re an awesome father. Liz would be so proud of you and everything you’ve accomplished with Madeline. She’s growing like crazy. I’m really looking forward to the memorial foundation; it’s a wonderful way to honor Liz and her memory, and it’s a FANTASTIC way to help out young families with just one parent. What a brilliant idea.

That feeling of “what the hell do I do now?” is totally normal. I remember all those “firsts” with my daughter. One of them even ended with an IV and a night in the hospital. She was not a fan of Pedialyte. However, during the process one of my husband’s co-workers suggested layering towels under where she was sleeping or where we were sitting. That way, if she threw up we just peeled off a towel, and were good to go. No changing of sheets, couch cushions, etc., and laundry can be done later. The throwing up in the car, you just feel so helpless. I think we’re still getting puke out of the knobs.
    My guess — 16 lbs 2 oz, 26 1/4 inches.

You are a great father, Matt. My personal philosophy is that if the outfit is still clean after one wearing, it goes back in the drawer. Otherwise, I can’t keep up with the laundry.

You wondered how you’d ever be able to explain to Maddy what happened to her mother, I’d say that this blog would be perfect. (Older as in, not 5, but 18). In the meantime, keep on doing what you’re doing, answering questions as you go. Your love for your daughter is practically tangible, she will be able to get through it all with you by her side.

Oh…one last thing…a parenting tip for you. I forgot to mention that when your child is projectile vomiting, it’s best to keep your mouth CLOSED when you are close to them and unaware of when it might be coming. I learned that the hard way when my 6 year old (now 9 year old) suddenly vomited in my mouth when they were sick. NOT a good memory or one that I care to repeat. :)

Maddy is getting so big and just cuter and cuter each day. I see a lot of Liz in her but I also see a lot of you in her. Give yourself some credit!! You are doing an amazing job and better then most parents would do in your situation. You are living life the fullest with your daughter and I am sure Liz is watching over you smiling each and everyday. Hence I know she is, her heart lies in your daughters. Hope she’s feeling better soon!!

I just wanted to let you know that letting your kids sleep in their clothes does not make you a bad parent. This morning when I went in to wake my eight year old up for school I noticed that he still had on his clothes from yesterday. I asked him why and his answer was that he and his dad forgot to put on pajamas.

And her outfits are always too cute. You are doing a GREAT job!

My son is 8 and still goes to bed in the outfit he’s going to wear the next day. It saves a hell of a lot of time in the morning! I’ve sent him to school in the same outfit several times on consecutive days. Isn’t that smart parenting?!? Keep up the awesome work…you are truly doing a great job!

p.s. Pedialyte is not only good for projective vomiting…it’s good for hangovers too. Not saying you’ll ever need that of course! :)

Shamwows definitely clean up puke well. And other bodily fluids that leak from my babies. I read your blog all the time and I think you are doing amazing with Maddie I’d love to say “Hang in there, it will get better.” But that’s bullshit and we both know it. It will be tough every day for the rest of your life. Every first, every moment, you will think of Liz. But thats not horrible either. Horrible would be if you DIDN’T think of her. Been a reader for a while now…first time commenting. Love reading your blog…it definitely keeps me in check when my 3 kids start driving me nuts…How blessed I am to have this time with them. I know you know this, but what a BEAUTIFUL little girl you have. When you write about not knowing what to do…..from the pics of her no one would ever think you didn’t now what you were doing. She looks so happy and so in love with her daddy. I think to her you know everything. As for the outfits…she looks fabulous!!! Oh and sometimes my girls wear the same thing one day, to bed, and the next day too. Hope she is feeling better.

phew – i am so glad you said 1159pm and not midnight. when people say midnight i get all thrown off – would midnight friday mean the beginning of friday or the end of friday. i always say the beginning of friday, but folks i know argue with me and say the end.

enough of my silly ramble babble – glad madeline is feeling better and keeping things down for you. what an impression you would have made had this happened on the airplane. had i been sitting next to her it would have been chain reaction… well, probably not with baby greeen beans, but definitely as her foods get thicker… mmm… dinner anyone?

since she puked most of her weight off, i am going to go with 14# 8oz and 26 inches long.

Puking children are scary, period. Any and every parent feels helpless and distressed when having to care for a sick child, I salute your resiliencec in dealing with this situation the way you did. I’ve been lurking on your blog for a while, but never commented before. My kiddos were sick over the holidays (too much “indulgence” food, not enough sleep) and I spent a night laying on the bathroom floor with one of them curled up on my lap in a big towel (there were no blankies left after so many explosions!), rocking back and forth, humming a lullaby. In that moment, alone with a moaning, quivering toddler, in the dark, I felt so immensely alone and incapable of doing anything to help, as if the night would never end, with fear oppressing my heart… and yet I was surrounded by my sleeping family, in a safe place, with many resources at hand…
While my mind knew all of that, my heart was still so worried…
Yet the sun got up the next morning, a new day starting with a little ‘un full of life and smiles. These are precious moments, these new mornings and renewed smiles, they fill me up with new hopes.
I can rationalize your grief in my mind, and I often feel sad and overwhelmed with a feeling of loss for all that could have been when I read your posts, but in all honesty, I simply cannot imagine living it, going through the motions, facing it everyday. Your pain is immense and your strength matches it. I admire your courage and I thank you for sharing your story with us. It makes me a more grateful person and you inspire me. I guess you are probably tired of hearing that, but it’s true to me, so there you go. Thank you.

Matt – when you said that you didnt’ know how you were going to explain this all to Maddy I just about cried… You will never really have to explain anything to her – she is a well loved, well cared for child. The fact that you live your life for her (and liz) will be more than so many other kids get. And truly – I do not know how single parents do it. I admire you every day for that. Parenting is hard enough when there are two… Hang in there! (My husband was a stay at home dad and he was proud of every outfit he ever “put together” on our twins when they were infants – I have a photo album full of babies in different outfits – I think it’s great that you’re showing her and everyone else that dad’s can dress babies too!)

Matt – I’ve been reading your blog for months and never cease to be amazed by the raw honesty of your posts and the obvious love and devotion you have for Maddy (and Liz). I have never commented before but your wondering if your letting Maddy wear the same thing two days in row made you a really bad father (don’t know if that was a serious thought or not) compelled me to respond.

I will tell you what I tell all the new fathers I have spoken to who are concerned about whether or not they will be a good dad to their daughter. . . just try to be the kind of man you would want your daughter to marry.

Based on your blog and how happy Maddy obviously is, you’re doing just fine. I’m sure Liz’s parents would agree.

It was hard not to read the comments, but I wanted to make a guess on my own :)
I am going to say 16 pds 13 oz and 27.3 oz.
You did great with Madeline’s first sickness. You are right it is not easy to not have a tag team especially during times like that. Your fashion dressing is good too. My husband has taken to dressing our daughter in Matt style as we call it. He puts her onsies on the outside sometimes too.

I am so sorry to hear that Maddy is ill – I hope she is back on the mend. That is scary to have an infant throw up that much. Hope she’s hydrated and well. She’s in capable, loving hands – you are doing an amazing job. Hang in there. I hope you don’t catch what she has!

My guess is 16 lbs 4 oz, height of 26″

Hey Matt! I have been following your blog for a few months now. I’m a missionary in Perú and we have 3 little boys, so I always love seeing your little princess! She has got to be the cutest, most adorable little girl I have ever seen! You two make quite a pair- loved the pics of the 2 of you chillin’ on the couch! Just wanted to say that I think you are doing an AMAZING job raising her! She is going to have the coolest life with such great stories of the great places you take her and cool restaurants she sleeps through! :) I really do think you’re doing an amazing job! You love her so much and that is so evident! It’s always scary when they’re sick, but I hope she will all better super soon! Projectile vomiting can be very scary! I’m praying for you both regularly and I am especially praying for her tummy to get all fixed soon!! Just wanted to say Hey and I think you are doing AWESOME!!

First off my guess…..16#4oz and 26.25 in.

Secondly, you are a funny man Mr. Logelin. The whole outfit comment made me laugh out loud! (That you were talking about layering in the first place, then that you couldn’t believe you were either!)

Lastly, I am very impressed with you re: waiting for your luggage in your previous post. It made me think of a quote from Maya Angelou (when she was on Oprah:)) , “I’ve learned that you can tell alot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.” Just from what you have said, sounds like you’ve come a long way my friend.

P.S. Madeline looks so cute in your “layered” outfit standing by the wall I just want to eat her up!!!!

  142. Posted 1/8/2009 at 8:10 pm | Permalink

If you are a bad dad for letting Maddy sleep in her clothes, I am an awful mom. Griffin (who is 8) sleeps in his jammies and just puts clothes on over them so they become long johns. At night, he just takes his clothes off and his long johns become jammies. I usually only let him do that a couple nights in a row before fighting with him to change the underlayer.

I’m sorry you have to do this alone.

Sending you peace and light, Nena and Reese

Wow, it exhausts me just reading about the throwup night/day. Good job daddy. Heck ya on leaving clothes on for a couple days. Seriously, how dirty do they get? (well, minus the throw up). Just think when she’s a teenager she probably won’t change her clothes anyway. My guess…27.2 tall…16.7 weight

Madeline is beautiful, as always. She is such a smiley baby, and her smile looks so much like Liz (although she mimics some of your faces too). So sorry to hear about her being sick. Hopefully, she’s all better now. She might not like green beans for a while. ;-)

Letting her sleep in her clothes is not a bad thing! I’ve done it several times, but only in soft clothes. Not in denim just because I would hate to sleep in denim.

Poor baby! Stomach bugs suck. When my kids get them, I put beach towels under them on the bed so that if they puke in their sleep, it’s easier to clean up. If you put down several layers of towels and catch it quickly, you can avoid having to change the whole bed (which is especially good when they’re in YOUR bed, and you can only fit one set of king sized sheets in your washer at a time…).

Surely there’s a pharmacy in your area that delivers… These are the times when you should call all your wonderful IRL friends and say, “Hey, can you bring me over some Pedialyte and a six pack of beer?” Just make sure that you each get the right beverage.

    Hugs,

Even though the situation is so unfair, you are kicking single parenting’s ass! That little girl is the most important thing in the world to you, and it’s so sweet to see it come across in your writing – in obvious big ways, but also in the small ways too. Especially with the intensity that you ran out of your office, forgetting your keys. She is SO lucky to have such a wonderful father. Okay….now I’ve read past the adorable outfit photos. :-)

So sorry Madeline had the stomach flu. Sounds like it was just a 24hr thing and she’s on her way to feeling better. Holding down all that Pedialyte is a good sign! Whether it’s their first or hundredth time being sick, it’s always a little scary.

The expiration date on Pedialyte is usually at least a year out. After having to take kids with the flu to get it while they were sick, I decided it would be best to keep a bottle or two in the cabinet. Of course, if you have it you’ll never need to use it. That’s the rule, I think. :-)

I will guess 17 lbs 9 oz. and 28 in. long. I swear that girl just gets cuter and cuter by the day. Glad you made it through your first time of projectile vomiting…blech! Happy to hear she is doing better too.

  211. Posted 1/9/2009 at 1:29 am | Permalink

I hope little Madeline is feeling better by now! By the way, I think you ended up doing great eventhough you were overwhelmed at the time. I still get overwhelmed often with my two kiddos….why did I think having them so close together would be a good idea?? Parenting is a big challenge- that’s a constant!

Anyway, I’m going to guess that Miss M is 26.1 inches tall and weighs 18.8 lbs. By the way, she has the cutest, longest toes!! At least it looks that way in one of the pics you posted- the one where she’s standing against the wall modeling the jeans/dress outfit.

Can I sneak in under the wire? I’ll go with 17lbs 2oz, 26.75″ — but take off an ounce if she hurled again on the way to the doctor’s office. :-)

Though of course I hope she didn’t! (B was such a puker I just ended up a little blase about it, and took a lot of comfort in the fact that bugs work their way through their little bodies relatively quickly.) I hope that Maddy’s well on the way to fully mended by now.

Yeah, that single parent have-to-be-everywhere-do-everything-not-miss-a-single-fucking-trick-because-there’s-no-one-else-to-pick-up-any-dropped-balls thing can be pretty fucking daunting at times. It’s all on us. And that does suck (especially since most days I feel barely qualified to operate a toaster). And it sucks moreso for you because your situation is probably one of the few exceptions to an adage I hold near and dear: The only thing worse than being alone is wishing you were.

Thing is, there are upsides, too. Even in your situation. They don’t fully compensate, but they can mitigate. A little. I’ll just leave those for another comment, cuz this overworked, exhausted, stressed out single mother needs to get some sleep now so she can remember to appreciate all the ways she’s so fucking lucky when she drags herself out of bed tomorrow to do it all again… :- )

PS: So exciting about the non-profit, Mr. President, and to see your reach extend in that direction. But foundation or no, I hope you realize how much non-quantifiable goodness you’re already responsible for in Liz’s name: every wife or husband who holds their tongue or their spouse because your words opened their eyes to how much they have; every mother or father who finds a little more patience for their children or more motivation to get them out and about because of your experiences; everyone who reaches out to strangers because they see what you’ve done with that; all the good that results from those little actions; and so, so much more — It’s all in your column, Matt, just as much as the “concrete” measurable dollars that will, before long, flow to widows and widowers. AWESOME. :-)

Well shit it’s a little past midnight here in Oregon on the 9th. Didn’t get here in time. Oh well! I hope she grew some and she is feeling better right now. Right now myself and my two kids (Lilly who is two and Ben who is five months) have this flemmy cough throw up, stuffy nose thing. So not fun. Running off of very little sleep for the past few days. My husband works so I can stay home ( he works nights too) and I will NOT bug him to lose any sleep. He works hard so I can stay home so I deal with it. :P

But pedialyte has been a LIFE savor for me these past few days for both of my kids. I’ve never seen so much puke in my life now that I have two kids. And sucking out my sons nose, yikes I’m sure the neighbors think I’m beating him because he screams so much. Lilly is old enough that she can actually “blow” her nose a bit for me. Ack ok I’m ramblin on enough now.

I’m glad Madeline likes the pedialyte. My daughter likes it, my son makes this awful face and looks at me like “what in the hell are you trying to feed me?” LOL Got some great pictures of that face too! lol

But we do pedialyte, humidifier, cleaning out noses and loads of sleep when we can. lol

I hope she starts feeling like herself soon! Sounds like even when sick she’s a happy baby! Thats great!! Can’t wait to hear about her 9month appointment!

OH and I laughed very hard about you describing her outfit you dressed her in! I think you did great!!! Ok it’s 1am and my kids are finally out, time for some sleep for me……

One more thing: Be careful — that Candice is obviously nuts.

Okay, I’m going to sleep now for real.

You are an amazing father never think anything less! I am currently a single mommy of a 2.5 yr old and a 7 mth old as my hubby is in Iraq so I know how stressful handling this on your own can be. Just a few nights ago my 2 yr old fell and split her forehead open bleeding like crazy. I ran down the 3 flights of stairs to my neighbor who helped out but it was very upsetting as I had to lug both kids around running to the ER. I hope Maddy is feeling better!!

    Hey,
been reading your blog for a good three months now, spend the first week catching up on all the posts from the beginning, never commented before but thought I should say hi at some point and why not now while taking a guess in the contest.

So HI, this is Irene from Germany, mom to a little girl named Jennifer who will be 2 years old in two weeks and currently 25 weeks pregnant with a little boy.

Can’t tell you anything that someone else hasn’t before…You are a great father! I guess my hubby would be hopelessly lost if I wasn’t there anymore.

I absolutely ADORE the dress and Jeans outfit, it’s so cute! And those cute little naked toes sticking out of those jeans…Maddy is such a cutie (oh my the word cute is used way to often in this sentence I guess but oh well)

Anyways, keep up the good work and my guesses are (converted from the metric system)

Matt your an awesome DAD!!!!!! I hope Maddy is feeling much better. The first time your child is sick like that is scary. I kinda freaked out the first time also. I remember the first time my kids fell and hit their head when first starting to walk. Those egg size knots on their heads. That freaked me out too. You have lots of good family and friends and you will always do fine. You need to give yourself more credit. You are doing an amazing job. Ok for Maddys Dr. visit I say 16lb 12oz and 25.5 inches.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but after dealing with my son throwing up on me while holding him (because I didn’t know what to do with him), I asked a more experienced mom of 3 what one does with a vomiting child since they can’t put their head over the toilet. Her response was that she sits in the bathtub with them. Freakin’ genius! I’ve tried it and it works wonders (if you know when they are about to blow). I also added a towel underneath both b/c the tub is cold and b/c it soaks up the vomit. Thought I would share…

I’m not going to guess because I’m pretty sure someone already guessed what I would have guessed (make sense?)…

But I’m delurking to say that you are an absolutely amazing parent. As I was reading this post, I just thought “what a fucking awesome dad.” I’ve thought that before, but this post just amazed me.

Matt…you are growing up man. I know that sounds so silly… but…you are…as a parent! I know it is so hard…but you are doing the best you can…and doing an awesome job. If you ever doubt yourself, look at Maddy to see so you can kick yourself in the ass for even questioning! ;)
The throwing up is weird…wonder if she got a back to daycare bug or something. Towels work as great vomit catchers…I remember experiencing the same thing you did…we didn’t make it through the store without some vomit and I had to go to the freaking meat dept to get wipes…fun times!

Ya’ll are always in my thoughts. I can’t wait to read more info about your foundation. I think it is so awesome!

You are only a lousy parent if I am — I let my 11yo ward go to sleep so nasty that I had to wash his sheets the next day — I’m pretty sure that throws me off the parenting pedastal :o ) I’ve taken in my young friend since his mother was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia the Saturday before Christmas. I’ve always spent a lot of time with him – but this quasi-mom thing – this is all new territory… bumpy, rocky, hissy fit laden territory… praying for you both, and don’t worry, they make it through puking.. just make sure she doesn’t choke… my guess is 26-3/4 inches and 17 pounds 3 ounces…

Matt – this post made me laugh so much because I know exactly what you went through! I just spent my yesterday with my daughter throwing up on the way out the door of the dr’s office. Then again in her car seat on the drive home (same choking scary moment and all), then again once we were home several more times. Tried to get some pedialite into her but she’s too picky to drink it. I’m a single parent myself and since I was alone covered in baby goo, her covered, the carseat, my car, any place I moved her, I just thought where do I begin! Do I clean everything up, do I comfort her while instead while we’re both dripping in goo, do I try and give her pedialite?! ahh, the joys!
So just so you know, you are so not alone, everyday is a whole new wonderful challange.

P.S. I had planned on writing to say that I always love the outfits you put Maddy in, very creative and adorable. You two are a great team. Thanks for sharing your amazing stories. Its nice to hear from other single parents out there in the world.

I also grew up right near where the photo at the bottom of your page was taken….small world.

I must admit, I’m a little bit jealous of Maddy’s wardrobe! She is always dressed so great. Myself I could never understand why parents would change a child’s clothing so often even if the clothing was perfectly clean. So why wake a peaceful sleeping baby just to put them in pj’s. Hopefully she’s feeling better and whatever she had has worked its way out of her system… besides by way of her mouth that is! As for her measurements, I would say 16 lbs 12 oz and 26.2 inches tall.

Beans, beans are good for the heart
The more you eat, the more you…

Darn it. Projectile vomit just doesn’t scan.

And they never tell you about that in the Contented Baby Book, either. All that stress when they are ill makes up quite a handful, and sometimes a pretty smelly handful at that.

But on the upside, at least that lovely new dress was green.

Some might imagine there’s no time for tears when you’re mopping up the green stuff. But it really makes that worse — so very hard to quell the panic attacks about managing all on your own when everything’s all mixed up with grief. Thankfully all Maddie’s smiles can help a bit.

Here’s my best guess (weight has been scientifically adjusted for recent fluid loss):
    15 lbs 2oz
    26.3 cm

Those are scary moments when we know that our child’s health is out of our control. OVERWHELMED is the right word. The only way I get through those moments is prayer. Seriously, life as a parent—let alone a single parent—is waaaaaaaay overwhelming.

i hate to comment when there are like 500 but after scanning the first couple hundred, i noticed no one admitted this (or maybe you and i really are the only two parents who are actually lame enough to do this) BUT…
if she’s wearing something comfy, my daughter ALWAYS wears it to bed! and if it’s still relatively clean (ie: looks decent after one swipe of a wet rag) she definitely wears it the next day. i even pushed it to three days over christmas break.
so…i don’t know, we may be bad parents, but at least we’re not alone.

Who invented pajamas and decided we had to sleep in them anyway?? When one of my kids was a toddler, he liked to sleep naked. I’d check on him in bed to find he’d taken off all his clothes . Like a good mom I would dutifully jammie him up again only to have him peel himself buck naked again the minute I left the room. I finally caught on……it doesn’t matter! Sleeping little people are happy little people. Hey also Matt, I travel for work a lot and wanted you to know, I used to wander airports looking for Starbucks. The past few months when I’m in an airport, I find myself scanning the crowds of people looking for you and Maddy. Next time you’re in the tunnel at O’Hare riding the moving sidewalks past all the neon, don’t be surprised if you hear a shout-out from someone waving on the other side. Happy New Year to a great Daddy.

Hey Matt and Madeline – no guesses here, but I look forward to hearing the results! I know you probably get more comments than you can read, but just wanted to stop by and say that I’m still reading, still amazed and inspired, still enjoying every word, always rooting for you both and happy to hear that all is as well as can be. And a couple comments on the parenting stuff – keeping her in the same outfit for more than one day means slightly less laundry, so if it’s clean why not, right?! And unfortunately, those illness never become less worrisome with time or experience. I can tell you for a fact that whether or not you did it alone, the emotions would likely be the same (I’ve done it both ways, so of that I am sure). I’m honestly just hoping that your next post isn’t about you throwing up green beans and more about you dodging that bug and having fun with your smiling, happy, healthy baby.

Thanks again as always for sharing your life with us strangers.

14 lbs 12 oz, and 24 3/4″. No worries on whether she sleeps in her clothes, one of the couples I babysit for their 4year old sleeps in what he wore that day, and depending on the damage done to it, may not change all of the outfit the next day. And the puking is hopefully done, and won’t return for a while. She’s beautiful.

haha about wearing the same outfit two days in the row. We do it here as well. If they are clean why waste the money, time and envirerment by cleaning it when it really doesn’t need to be yet? Scary about the throwing up. My kids didn’t doi anything like that until they were almost 2, so I wasn’t so worried. But I know why you would feel overwhelmed without liz there. I could not begin to imagine how hard it is for you. By the way, I loved your thoughts on baby teeth. I also think your fashion choices for Maddy are awesome. Do I just keep driving? Ugh, it sucks! FWIW, I pulled over the first time it happened to me, but then I realized that I couldn’t do anything anyway, so I just drove like hell towards home with the windows down…..

I’m late on this one but Ava bean just had her check up last week and she’s 4 months younger that Madeline but I wanted to use her height and weight to see how close they are. Ava is 27″ and 19 lbs 1 oz. So that’s my guess.

    28 1/4 in

Number 1…. You are not a bad parent at all for letting Maddie sleep without putting on her PJ’s…. Why Wake a sleeping child for that? I do it all the time and i think my kids are Ok for it… Number 2… if you haven’t heard of the BRAT diet… here it is…

Vomit marathons STILL freak my shit out, but it sounds like you did GREAT! The best part is that she is too young to even care or notice that she was so barfy. Hope all is well now!

I imagine now that the story has been printd in People that you will be overwhelmed with new posters. I just wanted to say I think you ar amazing and I am SOOOOO sorry for yor loss. I too had complications at the end of my pregnancy and ended up with emergency c-section. It is scarey and you wonder if it will be OK, you just never know. I am sorry for your and maddy’s loss and lizs’ loss for that matter. To have the love you 2 had (have, I do not consider it lost in death) and to make such a beautiful creature from that love. You are blesssed even in your pain and for whatever you believe spiritually, you will not be given more than you can handle. You 2 will find strength in each other thru the years as you remember LIz and as you tell stories of your love, you will teach maddy what love truely is. MY heart goes out to you, it truely does
I have 2 little ones of my own and I can not imagine what it would be like for them had i been lost in childbirth or even if something happened to daddy. Loss is always heartwrenching but inspires deep growth and spiritual developement>

Hey Matt. Elizabeth in Seattle here again. Your comment: “what he fuck I can’t believe I just wrote that!” about Maddy’s outfit description made me laugh out loud. My son had the projectile vomit gig at about 8 months, it sucks. Luckily there’s the fact that you’re getting more practice at baby fashion than you bargained for to keep you laughing through all of this!

Hey, if the Liz foundation would like to do a walk up here in Seattle in the fall, I’d be happy to help organize. I recently left a non-profit board, have a bit more time. Let me know. All best. Elizabeth

Hi my name is desiree i read your story in people… so sad. I can never say i feel your pain or fully understand. i am lucky not to be a single mother my son has a great dad. We do have a few things in common and from your story i wish i would have known more. My son Tristen was born 9-11-08 he was 6 days late and only weighed 4lbs 15oz, i also lost all my fluid but didn’t know untill the ultrasound the morning of my c section at 9 that morning i had 9% and when the dr busted my water there was nothing so after they tried to induce me and no progress my son was taken at 11:24pm, he was perfectly healthy thank you God. It’s kinda funny i was reading how Maddie went to the dr for her check up and in sep and weighed 13lbs 13oz on 1-12-09 we went for our four month and Tristen weighed 13lbs 12oz, he caught up fast. i just wanted to say you have a beautifull little girl and you have done a great job being a mommy and a daddy and sometimes Tristen wears the same outfit two days in a roll too lol. it’s people like you and your story that make life so much more worth while you sure have made you spot in heaven right next to your beautifull wife, but remember you have a whole life with her through your daughters eyes.

Dearest Matt, I came across your blog via AOL and thought wow, I have got to see how this guy does it! Because I, too, lost my fiance of 12 years (a year ago Feb.) and have been raising our two children, eight yrs old and five yrs old, as a single parent. And I want to know how do I teach my children the coping skills to get thru life with out their dad if I don’t know how to do it either?! I often find myself getting upset and angry because I didn’t plan on being a single parent, he and I were suppose to do this together! That was the deal, you know? And while I was reading your (past) post about Maddy being sick and you feeling overwhelmed… I couldn’t help but cry because that is exactly how I felt when that same stomach bug whipped thru our house the night before Easter Sunday of last year! Picture my son laying on one couch that was covered with towels and sheets and his blanky and the same set up for my daughter on the love seat. Both with big buckets, on stools mind you, on the floor close to their heads (or mouths,) sippie straw thingy cups full of ginger-ale, tissues galore, and lysol spray and hand sanitizer on the coffee table. Oh and also three old milk gallon jugs full of three parts water and one part bleach willing and ready to be poured into those buckets for rinsing and repeating! All the while I am trying to sleep, sitting up, at the end of the couch that my son is occupying, evenly between both children, waiting patiently for the first sign of who was going to be sick next, trying to ward off my own symptons of an upset stomach! And I coudn’t help feeling overwhelmed, I mean the tears just poured out Matt and I couldn’t stop them! It was the first time since his passing, two months earlier, that I realized my life had really changed and that I was really in this for the long haul with out the help, support, encouragement, patience, words of reason, love (etc.) of the man I had trusted to be by my side thru it all… even throw-up! And there have been millions of times since then that I have become overwhelmed and upset because I just wanted to (and still do) feel his arms around me and hear him say “Everything will be ok, your doing a great job, I am so proud of you and I love you!” I just want to feel that security and that safeness that I felt with him because I knew that everything really would be ok as long as we had each other! The kids and I have amazingly some how made it thru the year of the firsts (aside from his one year anniv. that is a week away) which was no easy task and I can’t help but think of all the other milestones that he is going to miss out on and that we are going to miss him experiencing! For instance, I turn 30 this year (as would he) and we had been talking about going away to celebrate us entering this new chapter in our lives since we hadn’t really done much for ourselves in years and had committed ourselves to being the best parents we could be. And our daughter starts kindergarten in Sept. and it is going to break my heart with it just being me standing there smiling, waving, and taking pictures because that was def. something my fiance was good at, being there for his family! He never missed anything that had to do with our kids because he knew how important it was for us (we both had absent parents) and our children. Also our son, he was the star soccer player this year! I was so proud of him because he worked hard out there on the field, Coaches are still calling to see if he’ll be on their team this Spring. And I know that not having his dad there affected him, because he was our sons biggest cheerleader but, I think (or I hope) our son took that sadness and turned it into determination. Especially when at the end of the season he was recognized as the MVP, he asked me if I thought his dad would be proud of him right now? I guess I really need to know how to not be so angry at him for leaving us and to somehow be able to, not necessarily move on (I hate how that sounds) but, start to live our lives again and learn to live them with out him? If you have any advice please let me know, we could trade stories and I could possibly help you with the next time Maddy gets one of those (terrific) daycare/preschool sicknesses considering we have had them all. I have become a pro at those and boo-boo’s LOL! Hope to maybe hear back from you but, if not I wish you all the luck and you and Maddy will be in our prayers. P.S. I was telling my son about your blog and your story and my son said to me and I quote “That makes me sad because atleast I got to have 7 1/2 years with my daddy and she didn’t even get to be with her mommy! I hope her daddy will tell her that she will always have an angel with her to watch over her and to keep her safe like my daddy does for me!”

Acutally I know a few people ( mostly single parents) whohave thier kids go to sleep in the clothes they will wear the next day. It lets the kids sleep in a bit. I don’t see that much differnet then letting them sleep in the clothes they wore all day. Espically if they fell asleep in them. Never wake a sleeping baby!
