tonight…

(jumping ahead a bit to post a video of madeline).

we got a little play time in before our friend, melanie, arrived to watch maddy for the night.

they’ll be in the living room with all of the musical instruments, i’ll be in my office trying to finish up a few things.

this is what i’ll be missing out on while i work…

Aww, so freaking adorable! I’ve been reading your blog for about 2 weeks now, and it’s really inspired me in ways I never thought possible (as I’m sure it has countless others as well). I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and you both have definitely been in my thoughts. That little girl right there is just pure sunshine, and you are an AMAZING father! You both are very lucky to have each other. I’m sure she’ll appreciate all of this one day.

Thank you so much for sharing these little bits of Maddy with us. This video made me giggle with joy too. My Lulu is 9 months and she loves being tickled like that too. This is such a fun age because they’re learning so much (and they can’t yet talk back). Maddy knows just how much she is loved.

Gawd Matt…..I admire you. Somedays, from your posts, I feel the burdens you bear on your shoulders, then other days I feel your hope. How you manage, I dont know…you probably dont either…all you know is you have to…period
Maybe your dreams are from your fears….fears of forgetting her…..but you have the best reminder….that beautiful little girl you share and always will.

your daughter is absolutely precious. i am sure that watching her is a bittersweet thing. every milestone, every giggle, every wistful glance. . . how her mommy would have enjoyed being a part of that. it’s the grieving process that just will never quite go away.
you are grieving in style. i so enjoy reading about your heart and how you are processing. and venting. and just celebrating little maddie.
you are doing such a great job, dad. and i love the celebration of a baby’s giggle. may it bring you much joy.

I am pretty sure I have told you this… But my Nana would have belted you and said you are going to make her stutter.

But my baby brother doesn’t stutter and he has 4 older siblings that are at the least 13 years older than him so pay the Nana no mind. She also used to worry about charcoal colored shit so keep that in mind.

  87. Posted 2/20/2009 at 7:37 am | Permalink

As much as this fills Maddy’s heart, I know it fills your heart too. Beyond belief. Just for a split second, everything seems and is perfect. When that giggle goes off, everything else fades and your world is how it should be.

Adorable. I love those baby belly laughs. :) I remember with my little boy, all I had to do was shake my head so my hair flipped around and he’d bust a gut. Ah, the memories.

    So, so cute. :)

That was pretty frickin’ adorable. I even broke the rules and turned my speakers on at work.

Matt, I read a gay dad parenting blog entry today, and thought of you when the dad referred to himself as a “baby roadie” as he went through the airport hauling his and his baby’s gear. “Roadie” or “Sherpa” fit equally well. ; )

    Hi Matt,
I’ve been reading your site ever since I read it in People Magazine, but I’m the stalker reader type LOL. I usually just read and don’t comment but first time for everything! I wondered if you have ever heard of Animusic? My son LOVES it. I think your daughter will enjoy these and you can get lots of work done because they are in such awe and must watch it!

Matt, It is so apparent to all of us that Maddy LOVES her daddy! My heart aches for you, and I am shocked and amazed at how well you’ve handled the past year. My own baby girl is about Maddy’s age, and I couldn’t do what you’ve done. You don’t know me at all, but as a mama myself, I am SO proud of you.

I don’t think there is anything more pure and wonderful than a baby’s laugh. Your blog, photos and story are all so touching. Six years ago when I had my daughter our lives almost took the exact same path as yours. I think it’s something so few people realize happens.

All I can think when I read your blog, is what an AMAZING parent you are, and what a fabulous job you are doing raising Madeline. I can not even begin to think of how proud Liz must be. Thank you for sharing your story and life with us. You are touching many people and I think you are going to make a big difference.

I got the same hit off her laugh everyone else did…

I will admit though-that sometimes i read through the comments here- and I wonder about how father’s are viewed by the masses.
Or even harder to admit- sometimes I find myself thinking about the actions of said parental male types..
not to swing so off topic from the wonderful- happy- mood altering – tiny bundle of giggles- truly convivial clip….

    just a curiosity…

    Hi Matt,
I stumbled upon your blog a few days ago, and have been truly touched by your story. I have been parked in front of this computer screen every time my 4 month old son sleeps just so I can read through every single post.
I am blown away at what an awesome job you are doing with your baby girl. So many people would have just curled up in a ball and shut the world out after experiencing the loss you did. I admire your ability to get up everyday and make life so very special for your precious Madeline.
The way you write of the love you and Liz shared is not only touching, but inspiring. After reading your blog I have held my husbands hand a little tighter, and snuck in a few extra kisses this past few days.

    Aloha,
    Michelle

There’s an actual word for blowing raspberries on a baby’s bare tummy. It’s called a bnerfel. You won’t find it in any dictionary, but that is what my dad called it, and what I call it to my daughter. Bnerfels are the BEST!
