two bits of unbelievable news.

looking at the birds.

below are two things i never imagined would follow my name.

first.

“madeline and matt on oprah

as some of you know, we taped an episode of oprah a few weeks back. i just got word that the episode will air next monday, april 13th. check your local listings to see when the episode airs in your neighborhood.

second.

matt logelin named “dad of the month” by iparenting.com

seriously?

yeah.

seriously…

madeline’s “da da” is good enough for me, but this “dad of the month” thing is really a nice honor. (thanks to kelly burgess for a great article).

i’m not sure i should ever be crowned “dad of the week day minute second” by anyone, but i did have that one amazing day when i may have deserved the designation:

*trimmed her fingernails and only drew blood twice

*took the dirt-covered leaves from her hand before she put them in her mouth

*bathed her for the first time in weeks

*heated up (in the microwave) an awesome dinner of apple pie and vanilla ice cream

*in my sweetest mommy voice, read her that article on bonnie ‘prince’ billy in the wire

*changed her into pajamas before bed

*let her stay up late to watch tim and eric awesome show great job!

(some of those things are fake, some of them are real…you decide which are which).

(also, today is the one-year anniversary of madeline coming home from the hospital. how did we get here? i really have no idea, but i’m pretty fucking thankful for how far we’ve come, and for what we’ve become).

then:

i had to be wheeled out.

proud papa and madeline.

first bottle at home.

now:

her favorite spot.

on the train.

holding on.

What a crack up you are, Matt. Congratulations on being Dad of the Month, and for not breaking Maddy this past year. (FYI: Providing therapy fodder doesn’t count until she can call to book her own appointments.)

One of these days you’ll figure out that truly great parenting is almost all about truly showing up (even and especially when we’d rather stay in bed with blankets over our heads), and then you’ll finally understand how few parents really do and why there’s such a fuss over the guy with the filthy kid, bloody fingertips, and no shift key.

And even then, it’s nice to know fame won’t make you change anything…not even your shirt. xo :)

I know the greatest thing to come of the Oprah appearance is going to be the massive exposure for the Foundation, but still it’s pretty damn cool you meeting and being on Oprah. And Father of the Month is more than deserved, I’ve said it before (I believe) Liz knew what she was doing when she chose you her as her husband and future father of her most precious treasure. Liz would be smiling her often spoke of smile, with pride, for all that you are doing and all that you are being for Madeline. It continually overwhelms me the love you have for them both. You so deserve that award! It’s not about being perfect. It’s about loving so much it hurts and trying to do your best by your kid and just getting up and breathing every day, especially on those days when you want to lay down and die, but you don’t because that little piece of humanity needs you (well, and breakfast).
You are an amazing Dad, Matt, and you and Maddy have come so far in a year.

Congrats on Oprah! I can’t wait :-) Also, big congrats on the dad award! That’s sweet and you should be very darn proud of yourself. It all shows in that little girl’s smiles. Keep it up Mr. Superstar and the Little Lady……

A few others commented that perhaps your writing a book? HBG? If so, I can’t wait for that!!!!

Wow – the photos of you two leaving the hospital are pretty powerful – you have come a long way. Despite all of your pain – look at how happy and healthy your daughter is. You are dad of the year in my book.

And I dream of the day that I will have the fashion sense that you have. That little girl is the best dressed baby I think I’ve ever seen – and I have two girls my self. This makes me very embarrassed. In fact – will you teach me how to dress myself?

I have never commented before. Today, I just had to say, that I think you are awesome Matt….in a very innoculous way. You would trade anything for this “awareness” you have been able to bring to the rest of us fortunate ones, but still you are making such an incredible impact. Only because you are YOU can any of this be possible. YOU make me proud to be a parent and a partner to my husband. Everyday I count my blessings because of you…thank you. I would wish you luck with Madeline, but you don’t need it…not because of all your friends and stranger friends…because Liz knew when she picked you, you were it. Now that’s something to be proud of!!!!

Oh shit. I am a blubbering tearful mess over here after looking back at some of your pictures from a year ago.Your amazing strength and courage in the face of all of this is beyond me, and so completely moving.

You are absolutely deserving of an award for being a phenomenal father and a phenomenal husband as well. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself, and for being exactly who you are. Liz and Madeline both are, and always will be, so extremely lucky.

Near the end of the iParenting article, Matt, you are quoted as saying that something is “not being very manly.”

What you have accomplished and how you have conducted yourself in the past twelve months is, in my book, just about as manly as it gets.

    Congrats, best dad!

I’m certainly proud of you and I don’t even know you. But you’ve done an outstanding job of stepping up to the plate. All Madeline knows is she’s happy, healthy, secure and loved.

And statistics show that girls well loved by their fathers (well, in the proper ways) are miles ahead of most girls in self esteem as they reach adulthood.

Maddy may be unlucky to have lost her mom, but she was triple blessed with her dad. I mean that, sincerely. You also have documented your love for Liz in a way most don’t. And Maddy will have all of that to help her get to know her mom who loved her so much.

I think everybody has tragedy in their lives; what matters is how those who are left deal with it.

I am so pleased because I know how much attention it’ll bring to the foundation. You know what I really love? That even with Oprah, People, etc., I know you’ll still remain the Matt you are now – just a Minnesota boy who loves his wife and daughter. Congratulations Matt on your Dad of the Month honor. You have been doing such a great job for Madeline. She is really a beautiful baby who looks so much like her mother especially in that picture of her on the train. You have come a long way in a year. You had done what most men could of never done.by being Mom and Dad. Beside losing Liz you had a premature baby to take care of. Your Blog has made people look at life in a different light. Maybe not to take things for granted and to be happy for the little things in life, (and for us nervous mothers, we learned eating sand will not kill you nor will going to bed dirty or in your clothes!!! lol) I look forward to seeing you and Maddy on Oprah on Monday. matt, you totally deserve the respect and honor you are getting. I am so proud of you. You always stay humble and real. And this is AFTER Rachel, Salma, Oprah…and who knows who else is in your future?? Looking at your photos was great: Then and now. . . your facial expressions changing from overwhelmed to overjoyed; madeline growing from tiny preemie to happy, healthy toddler; your world moving from two to…(how many million is that now, anyway?!). Thank you for taking all of us on this wonderful, awful, astonishing journey with you. Congrats on your strength, gentle nature, and perseverance that brought you to this moment and place. It’s all good.
I figure all the ‘things’ are real..ha. And if she was covered with dirt and leaves, then, for sure you did good to give her a bath…LOL! Count on you to know when! Reading your list and then looking again at my most recent favorite-photo-set (maddy as a mousepad) just cracks me up. I enjoy your drollness and it always lifts my spirits. still i wonder if the celebrity status can keep up with ya.

I hope the title of best dad can penetrate you somewhat- it isn’t all fanfare blowing smoke up yer ass..people out there really *are* learning and being inspired to be better people thanks to you and your wee muffin.

Matt, I have never commented and I don’t really know why. I have been a follower from way back, I think like the 2nd or 3rd blog posting. I guess at first I just didn’t want to seem like a stalker and after Liz passed away I felt like anything I would have said wasn’t even adequate if that makes sense. I have prayed for you, for sweet Maddy girl for over a year now. I have cried sooo many tears reading your posts, laughed harder than I could imagine, shared your story countless times. Heck I have even shared your life with our pastor and friends at church lol. You more than deserve this award. Madeline is so lucky that you are her father. You are raising her to be a rich, loving, kind, sweet and honest girl. One day she will thank you for all that you have done for her. Enjoy this award and what lies ahead. I truly believe that this is JUST the beginning for you my friend. The doors are just starting to open and I can’t wait to watch and see where it leads you. Stay strong, and know that you have a family of 7 (yes I have 5 kids) here in Missouri praying, cheering, laughing, crying but most of all admiring your strength and we all think you are a HERO!

I wrote once, but I again wanted to say congratulations to you. You just amaze me from day-to-day. I think that you said how some would just crawl up in a cave after a situation like this, and I have to say that this is def what I would have done. I can’t possibly imagine having to go through the hand that you have been dealt.

And dad of the month is the least that you deserve…

Isn’t it amazing? What a difference a year makes! You go from scared shitless and completely clueless to semi-confident with a dash of uncertainty mixed in. It changes from wishing you could bring the nurses home with you to take care of this being you know nothing about- to believing that no one else in the world can take care of and knows your little one like you do. It’s an amazing transformation. So much changes in just one short year.

Raising a child is extremely difficult…but as children grow older, they only get more and more fun. You have definitely come a long way through a very difficult period…kudos to you and congrats on all of your accolades.

You are quite the duo and have really shown us all what it is to love. I have just recently started following your blog, and have been so deeply touched. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous daughter and powerful story with us all.

    Hi Matt and Maddy,
I saw your story on Oprah and I wanted to tell you what a great job you are doing. Your little one is so sweet. I know her mommie is looking down on both of you and smiling. It does show you that people are kind and they do care. Just stop sometimes and take a breath and take a little time for yourself too. Maddy needs you to do that. She looks like a beautiful little girl and so sweet was your story. I wish you both the best. Just know that you are never alone. So many people are here for you. God Bless you both.

Not only are you a remarkable human being who has endured more than I can imagine, you are a giant indie rock fan! Caught your Arcade Fire shirt on Oprah this afternoon, and now the Bonnie Prince Billy comment. I’m sure you already know this, but Will Oldham appears in one of the funniest videos I’d ever seen. http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/451fba17e0/cant-tell-me-nothin-from-zach-galifianakis

The show was great. Because of your story I found the sad story of your ( And Madelines friend) Maddy. They must have needed two angels in heaven to take them both. I sent a small donation via paypal because of you to the family. Hard times will be a head for them, I hope they can do something nice with the money and that because of you they will have a little less to worry about. You both are blessed. Thanks for making me think today….many more are worse off then I am. I am out of work right now but got more fullfillment out of giving back and hearing you share your story today then any paycheck could give me. I bought a website called cheerupyourlife.com and have not done anything with it yet. Maybe your story and blog will inspire me. I have wanted to use it to just post stories, hints, tips etc.. to cheer up peoples life… but am not even sure where to start! So many deaths, Divorces, jobloss, hardship.. I just want it to be a place to share stories about all of those things. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. :)

    Take Care and Cheers!

    Matt (&Madeline),
I watched you on Oprah today after I got home from work (I teach high school English). I was so moved that I begged my husband to watch the episode with me — and, yes, begged is the word as watching Oprah is not his thing.

He was so drawn into every father’s story, especially yours, since we can relate in age — we are in our mid-thirties, currently childless but want babies, and have been together for several years now and can’t imagine life without each other in it. He was also deeply touched by your story. It’s amazing that what we could never imagine we could ever live through or make it through emotionally, we somehow just trudge on and survive despite everything.

Having your beautiful and precious daughter helps — we both loved the Minnie Mouse dress at the end — that’s one for the picture frames and one that both sets of grandparents need to have a copy of if they don’t already!

Your journey has been amazing so far and I’m so glad you’ve blogged and shared it with the world. I look forward to reading your prior posts now that I’ve found it.

    Keep on’ keepin’ on…
I wish the best of life and happiness to both of you.

    Matt,

Saw you on Oprah yesterday – you are a wonderful father. I can totally relate to the single parent bit. I have been a widow for 6 years now and our kids were 15 and 5 when my husband passed. I work hard everyday at giving them a happy life even though they do not have their dad here in their life physically. Hardest part now is that my son (now 11) is struggling with remembering his dad since he was only 5 when he passed. We look at pictures and talk about him all the time but he still gets sad that he cannot remember a lot of things about his dad.

    You are a great dad!!!
