I did that once, only I realized what was about to happen as I was shutting the door and tried to grab it but of course being the selfish parent that I am I jerked my hands back at the last second so as not to smash them. Hehe!

Once when I was about Maddy’s age my mom locked me in the car… in the garage… in the dead of summer in Phoenix, AZ… not to mention said car was a Fiero. Worse has definately happened… no but really, accidents happen. When she’s older i’m sure she’ll appreciate that story as much as I appreciated mine, and tell everyone she can think of…

don’t feel bad. i totally locked myself out of the house with my children inside. Not once, not twice, but three times. 2 of the times were my 3 year olds fault and once was mine. We called the fire department all three times. they broke my door once, my window once, and once I found a key.

Just want to say THANK YOU, Matt for this post, because as I this morning locked my own daughter in the car, what helped to keep me from totally breaking down and feeling like the worst parent in the word was knowing that it has happened to others and our children still love us.

Oh Matt, I totally feel for ya. I have had similar things happen and somehow managed to stay calm for my kids. My daughter Misty (2) and I have been in three accidents (not my fault) and have had one flat tire and three dead batteries (I swear my van has the worst bad luck) and I have called the necessary people, remained calm, and fed her snacks and kept things level for her. It is funny how most people would think “why didn’t you panic?” but well… Sometimes it’s more important to keep the kiddo from freaking out. And our instincts take over!

Glad it all worked out okay! It is nice to hear that AAA and the locksmith both took things so seriously!

I would have freaked out. I’m not good in those situations. Good for you for staying calm — at least on the outside.
