maddy is in nyc.
(i’ll am here as well, but i’m far less interesting).
do you live in or near the city?
are you visiting the city?
would you like to come meet my child?
if so, a few of us will be enjoying some bar food and drinks on friday 5/22, from 5:00 – 8:00ish pm at this place:
joshua tree
366 w. 46th st. (between 8th & 9th, closer to 9th)
new york, ny 10036
space reserved on the first floor, towards the back (it should be obvious).
dinner up the street afterwards, maybe?
oh.
and last tuesday.
maddy got a
bath in the morning.
10 minutes after
getting dressed,
she poured 3/4 of
a bottle of root beer
over her head,
and down the
front of her shirt.
(no photos…i was too busy cleaning up).
time for her
second bath in
less than 20 mins.
that evening we
went to amoeba for
then…
later that night,
i went into
the kitchen to
get her a snack…
i returned to the living
room to find madeline
pouring an entire
bottle of iced tea
over her head,
and down the
front of her shirt.
(once again, no photos…i was too busy cleaning up).
fuck.
as i wiped
up my second spill
of the day,
i thought about
how much i hated the
sticky mess that
she created.
but i wasn’t upset
with maddy, because
it was
really my fault.
and as i
gave her
her third bath
of the day,
all i could think was…
this child is,
never, ever
allowed to go on
spring break.
(more on our nyc trip as soon as i get an internet connection from my hotel room…too hard to write a long post on my blackberry).

I’m the first one! Awesome! Hope you are having fun!
LOL! Oh my God, that is too funny.
LOL it’s hard to get mad when they are cute!
Well, no white t-shirts for HER any time soon.
Wish Heather, Jayneoni and I were in NY right now. How much fun would THAT be?!
Funny!!!
I work at Apple… you need an iPhone! :p
I’m so bummed… I’ll be in NJ/NY 1 week after your get together! Our Madeline’s could have met!
The Srping bresk comment is VERY funny! I love NYC. Glad you’re having so much fun!
Spills. They happen. Buck up!
hahahaha.. i was actually laughing out loud when i read the spring break comment. sooo funny! and you should set up a meeting like this in LA (if u guys are actually HOME haha) around the time im visiting the area!
PS-The young man at my school was scared, but when I shared your story with him, he was hopeful. As always, I’m humbled by this.
I got to hold his baby. Ah, sweetness.
hey matt,
my name is jo and i must say that i LOVE ur blog.
i’m a newbie but i literally sat at my laptop and read (almost) every entry from top to bottom
as a writer myself, ur words, realness and rawness really inspire me
ur an amazing dad with a beautiful little girl
keep doing a wonderful job
i kno that liz is so proud
We’re not planning on going to NYC until July, my family and I would’ve loved to meet you and Maddy.

Maybe we’ll have to plan a trip to sunny LA instead.
Hope you and Maddy are having a great time!!
It’s funny what men think when their daughters do “naughty” things. I would have never thought that she would have potential to be a wet t-shirt contestant during spring break, but my husband would. When our oldest was 4, we took her to Fuddruckers and they had this pole and she started dancing around it. I thought it was cute but my husband couldn’t stop her fast enough!
She’s too much fun, you guys always put a smile on my face!!
that’s awesome.
Maybe she was just … ahhh … hot?
ha ha aw, i guess sticky drinks are better then a massive diaper blowout lol..
Pretty funny, and of course once they do one thing and like it, they do it over and over again. Hope you are having a good trip!
That’s so funny! Sticky drinks are hard to clean up!
Come to Seattle!
See? She’s just entering the really fun part. My 2.5 year-old nephew is getting funnier and most fascinating by the moment (as did his elder siblings). Unfortunately, for us adults in his life, that also means more mess, more trips to the emergency room for stitches, etc., and much better photo ops. It also means big juicy kisses and hugs with a little voice saying: “I love you so much, Aunt Talea.”
Then when they hit 3, you have to be prepared for things like…when they turn into a dog for a year, complete with a “dogsuit,” inisisting all food comes in bone shapes, calling the parent the owner and insisting on being taken for walks (”don’t forget the poop bags!”)
She’s now 9 and perfectly normal. And fully human. Honest.
You’re gonna (mostly) love the next few years. I’m so glad I moved out to Oregon so I could catch these years on a daily basis.
OMG…that is too funny…I can laugh because I have been there…not three times in one day, mind you!! They are quick…and you can’t get mad as they are so darn cute….all you can do is laugh…and remember to keep beverages out of reach
Hope you guys are having a good trip…wish we lived in NY to come and visit…if you ever come to the West Coast of Canada, let us know!!
OMG! too funny!!! I wish I were visiting in NYC so I can meet Maddy & you of course! Can’t wait to hear all about this trip and see the pictures!
Have a great time in NYC! Enjoy
I don’t know if anyone has ever told you this, but I love it that you swear. I think sometimes you are reading my mind!! I have a 4 year old and an 8 month old, and the messes I have to clean up (poop up the back, ever have one of those) and my son basically goes from mess to mess to mess and I barely have time to clean one up and he’s made another one – it’s exasperating! They can be so frustrating sometimes, but at the end of the day it’s always “I love you” before they go to bed, and I have to remember sometimes to just live in the moment, and laugh at them sometimes. Hard to do though while you’re trying to get a shitty shirt over their head without getting it all over them lol Have fun in NYC!
Well who doesn’t love to pour a cool drink over their head?
Clearly our dear Maddy is embarrassed by all the photos you take of her passed out everywhere and she’s trying to jack up on caffeine to stay awake.
I literally just spit water out of my mouth! Thanks for the laugh!
Plus, I am right there with you, my daughter is 14 mos. today and wow…she’s into everything!!!! EVERYTHING!
20 minute bath intervals is pretty good going.
Should I send you some baby scotch guard?
oh man, we’re going up next weekend. (Actually we’re headed up to see Niagra Falls as I’ve never been.) Too bad we’re not there now as it would be so much fun to meet you guys! Hope you enjoy the rest of your visit, it’s such a fantastic city!
This is hilarious!! I almost spit up my coffee when I read the comment about never letting Maddy go on Spring Break. I wish I can meet you guys
Yeah, root beer. iced tea. Who knows what she’ll do when she’s 18! I have a feeling she’ll be fine. Maybe you wont be, but she will be.
she’s been watching those girls gone wild commercials when you’ve been out of the room hasn’t she?? hysterical
Man I would so drive from Philly to NYC if I didn’t have guest coming this weekend :*(
It would have been so nice to meet you two! Bummed….
Hopefully there will be another time~
So funny about Maddy and her spills!! I know the feeling with having 3 kids!! My 2 year old keeps me on my toes! He just spilled red wine all over my mother in laws carpet…..but I thought to myself…”why did you have red wine sitting on a coffee table with 3 kids around???” Anywho…
I hope you two have fun on Friday and I cant wait to read about your adventures in NYC~
Sounds like someone loves her bath!! Hopefully she’ll learn to just ask instead of continuing to dump drinks when she wants a dip! Too cute!
I hope you put the sham-wow to good use!
Have fun in NYC!
So, when #3 smashed raspberries all over his white sleeved shirt literally 5 minutes before #1 had to go to the bus, I should not have been totally pissed? Damn, played that wrong. Thanks for the advice, my parenting guru friend:)
I can totally relate to your daughter’s new found fascination with pouring drinks…my son is so into that too (plus he wants the straws and ice out of our glasses) It can be such a mess. Funny how they train us though…we’re learning (perhaps slowly) to put our drinks out of reach-challenging since he climbs really well too! Good Luck!
Wow, twice in one day? That’s a record! When my kids were little, those innocent expressions of curiosity (that ended in a huge mess for ME) just made me laugh (well, at least after the mess was cleaned up…and if I wasn’t completely sleep deprived.) Hope you brought lots of extra outfits!
when you come to ct let me know lol
Was she thirsty?
She might have been trying to drink from it…via the top of her head.
see this flying all over the world..the parties.. the fame…
she isn’t even a year and a half and she has a drinking problem!
HA
that is too funny, yes no spring break for Maddy. I wish I could meet up with you guys but I have an amnio tomorrow morning and I’ve been told I have to stay on the couch the rest of the day. Boo.. maybe next time?
hugs from NJ,
Erica and Landon
I am right there with you re: spring break. My 19 month old daughter has perfected the act of pouring any sort of liquid down the front of her shirt… including water from the dog’s bowl.
That is way funny! Willow likes to take cans of Diet Coke and pour them over her head (not sure why only DC, maybe Maddy is more advanced).
The toddler stage is one of the most fun but also the most frustrating stage.
We live so close but so far from NYC. If you are ever in Boston area tho, Maddy would have a playdate set with our daughter!
Maddy is awesome! (and you don’t suck)
I’ve been saying I want to go in to the city… hmm My Maddie could meet your Maddy. We’ll see, either way enjoy your trip
That is hysterical!!
Ha ha, that is great! I mean, great that it wasn’t my child I had to clean up that many times.
And great that you realize that she can’t go on SB trips.
Wish I was in NYC…great city! If you are ever in Dallas/Ft. Worth, I’m there!
oh the joys of toddlerhood!!! You’ll survive! Wish I was close to NYC! Would love to meet you guys!
Damn, it’s memorial day weekend, we’re heading out of the city Friday. You can use my apt (and internet connection) if you want. Hope you have fun, can’t wait to hear all about it.
That is too funny! It really is a learning curve for the parents. My daughter is 19 months and just the other day, I walk into the living room to find her sitting in the chair crying “I all wet”. She, along with the chair and the floor, were soaking wet with the pop I had left on the end table. When will I ever learn?
ok that is too funny, and than god your camera was not close to the drinks. She will get ahold of your camera some day, so just be mentally prepared for that. Maybe you need to start using a sippy cup for all your drinks…I am telling you take a trip to Charleston, SC..a very hip little spot…
Hahaha!! I guess the writing is on the wall, eh? Maybe she can go on Spring Break…just make sure she doesn’t have any white t-shirts?
You are such a wonderful dad! Maddy sure seems like she is keeping you on your feet! Just enjoy it because they grow up way too fast! I am sure you have many more spills to come! Have fun in NYC
It’s good that you are thinking of all the future dangers (spring break included) now. If you ever see Madeline with a funnel and a beverage, you know that you are in trouble.
*Thanks for providing a laugh on an otherwise ho-hum kind of morning.
Aw..I live in the city but won’t be here! Enjoy!
you’re such a wonderful father! good call on no spring break…unless you’re the chaperone!
i’m laughing about maddy only because it’s not my jack-jack this time! happy day to you…
Did she seem to enjoy this stuff being poured over her head? I ask because when I was little, I loved cool things being poured over my head and did it often. I’m 33 and my family still teases me about it every now and then.
You just made me laugh so hard!!!!!!!!! No easy task as i feel like shit!!
:)
No need for pictures our own imaginations do the job just fine:)
LOL, that is hilarious!
I’ve been a silent blog follower for a while now, since you are in my hometown I thought I would make myself known. Your Madeline is so cute!! I have my own Madelyn who just turned a year old on Tuesday, is this what I have to look forward to, her pouring liquids in herself? I really do want to meet your child and then our Maddy’s can play together, but I get out of work too late and by time I can get my Maddy to the city…well it would not be an easy feat. But I do live here and work in the huge Macy’s in Herald Square. Enjoy NY, there is really no place like it!! And also know that my thoughts and prayers are always with you. It has been an amazing journey watching Madline grow, she’s beautiful, and you are an amazing father.
Umm…yeah. I would have to agree on the no spring break for Miss M! LoL. How funny! Hope you are having a blast in NYC. Wish I lived closer!
I just noticed your rock star experiences under “what I’m doing” (haven’t caught up with the Twitter thing yet)…totally cool!!
I think you may have met your bath quota for the rest of the week. On second thought, if it were me, it’d probably take another 5 spills before I figured out that my beverage freedom had been irrevocably suspended.
I’m coming there today! We are celebrating a friends 40th bday. We’re from The MN. I will try to get the gals to come w/ me to meet you, and of course, Maddy!
ROFL…my boys were constantly knocking over my drinks, so I became a big fan of cups with tops and straws. It minimized the mess and was a life saver.
as i got to the end of your post, and as the mother of a daughter myself, i was thinking the same damn thing! cheers!
LOL!! What made her pour it over her head?? Like, what was she thinking, you know? These kids..they seriously crack me up!
SO happy you’re both having a great time in NYC. I wanted to Thank You for bringing the warm weather (finally!). Wish you were down by Chelsea Market as I work across the street!
Have tentative plans for tomorrow..if things change, I will definitely try to stop by for a little while with my 2 daughters who really want to meet Madeline!
Christine D.
hahah this is too funny. My little guy is only 9 months – these are the “fun” things I’m so looking forward too! Love the blog – I read it everyday! I so wish I was in NYC this weekend! Come to Maryland!
Hilarious!!! My chickie (Isabel) loved having me waste 3 diapers in one changing. I would be in the process of throwing one out and she’d be messing herself again.
Wish I’d knew about your NYC trip – we’ll be traveling in the opposite direction on the same day. Have fun while you are here.
Maddy knows how to party! You’re right–no Spring Break for her!!
My sister is in NYC this week. I just called and told her where you were going to be this Friday. Her play starts at 8 but hopefully she’ll make it by there for a few. Her hotel is only 5 blocks from the Joshua Tree. Will Chrissy and Jack be there too? When is your book coming out? We are patiently waiting your news of why you are in NYC again. Well maybe not patiently but eagerly waiting.
Maddy was just having a little fun with the root beer and tea. Don’t be so hard on her daddy. LOL! I bet that was a sticky mess to clean up off the floor.
Isn’t she a little young for wet t-shirt contests? LOL!
Yeah, once they’re mobile things have to be kept up.
You are doing awesome Matt. It’s been a pleasure watching Madeline grow up and change.
Being that I am in Minnesota, can I take a rain check until you travel here? Are you planning a trip to MN anytime soon? I think the same set up needs to take place..a big group in a park (weather permitting,,.it is MN..90 one day 40 the next) or a restaurant. I hope your trip to NYC is a success…you deserve it!
Great Maddie stories..she cracks me up..they are all fun ages..but 1 and 2.5 might be my favorite!
LOL! That’s awesome!
Sorry, I know the mess part isn’t funny, but seriously…I’m giggling loudly! Good job Maddy!
Looking forward to hearing more about your NYC trip! Hopefully there’ll be no more beverage-dumping incidents…
Hahaha that’s too funny! I love your re-tellings of what happens!!
awesome. Reminds me of the time I left the room for a moment and came back to see my son covered in Vaseline…..
Hahaha! Yes, it seems she’s already practicing for the wet T-shirt contest!
The spring break comment made me maugh out loud (not good when you’re trying to be sneaky at work). I work in the city so I will definetely try to make it. I would love to meet you guys.
That is so funny, and so typical of children… Have fun with her, just wait till she starts talking, then let the REAL fun begin….
lol! you are awesome!
Isn’t it crazy how much patients you have for your child, and not yourself? My daughter knocked over a cup of lemon aide on the coffee table where my cell phone, laptop and camera were located. I had no idea what to grab first, but what did I choose? The CUP! Of all things! Beware! None of those items should be near a drink, let alone all three at once.
I love it!!! Thanks for sharing, Matt. You will find parenting more and more interesting (and challenging) as time goes on. Thank God for a sense of humor!!!
ROFL! That’s probably a good idea.
Seriously, I think we have the same child only 5 months apart. This just gives me an idea of what is to come for me since Mia is younger than Maddy! Kids are the perfect reminder to have patience and laugh off the frustrating things that happen to us. Have a great time in NYC, I wish I was there!!
guessing you pour water out of a cup on top of Maddie’s head when you are rinsing her hair….
here are some pointers from my own learning experiences
-after Maddie has a hair cut or bang trim, hide very very well anything that look or work like scissors (my daughter was as blond as Maddie and those few snips she did at the scalp took FOREVER to grown out)
-after she watches you paint a room, hide everything that is a permanent magic marker (actually anything in my house that made a mark went under lock and key)
-make sure she doesn’t watch you put anything into the oven to bake, or keep an eye on dolls, toys and stuffed animals when you have something baking in the oven
(a melting plastic doll ruins an oven)
My kids always seem to be messier after we let them destroy the “1st Birthday Cake”. Maybe just coincidence or maybe we’re teaching them that bad habit.
The spring break bit was hilarious…and sooner than you think it will be a real concern. It really seems like it was just a matter of months ago my teen was in diapers!
Thank you, Matt… I was having a rough day yesterday/this morning and this made me laugh out loud.
I won’t be in NY til saturday
Driving through the night from Cincy to NYC to see my family with 3 kids 5 and under. Should be a blast (insert sarcasm) If there is any other get togethers planned let me know, my brother has an apt. by Columbus circle. Have fun!
Matt,
Will you be in the NYC on Sat?
-Minneapolis stranger that would love to say hi
awww, been exactly where you are and kicked myself the whole time!
How funny!! the T-shirt/Spring Break comment made me *snort* (I do that a lot). You need to stop by Portland OR one of these days, weather is BEAUTIFUL and there’s great things to see and do here.
“would you like to come meet my child?”
i wish i had a nickel for every time i’ve said this to strangers.
maddy may be sticky, but she’s a CUTE sticky mess!
Ha ha ha, thanks for the laugh this morning! Hope you’re having a blast in NYC. My fav city
I second the previous poster who said “Let me know when your in CT” haha. If you ever do, count me in. I’m over 2 hour drive from NYC, but have a blast!!!
Aw man! Of course, when you are in NYC I am still in NC. Maybe next time you visit the east coast I will be up in NJ and a short train ride to NYC. Oh, and if you ever want to go to the Bronx Zoo, I will totally join you!!
Oh and laughing pretty hard at your daughter spilling drinks over her head. I believe she has a drinking problem
I wish I lived in NY.
Bring that Spring Break Bound girl to Florida, Matt!!
This happens daily at my house. Lets just say my dog gets a lot of treats when my son is around.
Matt,
If I still lived in NYC I would most certainly be there to meet you and the rootbeer wearing Madeline. Hope you’re having a great time! Eileen
Love it, love it, love it!
I am cracking up right now picturing this…was she wearing a white t-shirt? did she start dancing on the table? Ok, im done hahahaha
Bella likes to take the water bottle (why I let her hold it, I just don’t know) and she shakes it and it sprays all over herself and me….yeah, locking them up is sounding better and better. We’re in trouble my friend LOL
Hope to see you guys soon and we’re glad you two are having so much fun.
xoxoxoxoxo,
Tricia and Bella
I would love to come meet you guys! I live two hours away, though. I am directionally challenged, so I shouldn’t try to make this trip on my own. LOL I like how Maddy is keeping you on your toes. Enjoy your stay at the NYC!
Glad to hear you are only going to Joshua Tree for drinks as the food there sucks. If you want good [affordable] Italian and yummy sangria, head to 44SW on 9th at 44th. We won’t be able to stop by as we will be heading to R.I. My husband now knows who you are because he is also an Iron & Wine fan (and bought Mr. Beam a beer in Brooklyn last year!), so let us know when you will be in NYC again
LOL
I was wondering how you were going to end this one!
thank god you’re funny.
LOL! too funny!
Have fun on Friday night!
Just moved out of NY!
Would have loved loved to meet you and your adorable Maddie. I have been following your blog for awhile and really love it. Well if you guys are EVER in Colorado let me know!! Cause that’s where it’s at!
Maybe she is practicing to be a winning coach. You know how they always get coolers poured on them after a win
I rather have that thought than Maddy on Spring Break
Woohoo! Seeing you and big girl Maddie after work will be great inspiration to slog through my day tomorrow with 1st trimester fatigue and reflux. You think if I hold Maddie against my belly I’ll get one with her awesome temperament?
SEE YOU TOMORROW!!
The girl knows how to party…and stay cool!
I hope you are having fun in NYC! You and Maddie both. I would love to meet you but I’m in TN. This is the first time commenting on your blog. Your story is so sad, yet so inspirational. Maddie is a beautiful little girl with an AMAZING father doing the best that he can. She will be so proud of you when she’s old enough to realize what has happened. God Bless you!
Oh I also meant to say I love the comment that you made saying that she wasn’t allowed to go on spring break when she gets older. Hahaha.
Maybe you should get a child gate to keep her out of the kitchen?
glad to have the laughs… next thing you know, she’ll be streaking. get the camera ready.
thank god Maddy poured cold drinks on her and not hot drinks. My sister poured hot water all over her at Maddy’s age and had some burns for sure.
be careful now that Maddy is crawling and walking soon to keep hot drinks away from her reach.
wonder if she will swear too like you once she starts talking…lol.
You guys make me smile!!! I live like a 3, maybe 4 hour drive away, depending on SoCal traffic, someday, I want to visit just to give you both “thank-you” hugs for making me smile every day!!!!!
I wish I lived close enough to meet the two of you. Three baths in one day. Good times. We have had that happen here multiple times!
maddy did it as she enjoys her baths…cute!
I also loved the comment about Maddy never being allowed to go on spring break. Probably a good idea.
Would love it if I were in NYC and could meet you and Maddy. If you decide to have a meet and greet next time you are in Minneapolis, I will be there.
I will need you to provide me with some paper towels to clean my screen….. thanks!
Your comment about spring break made me spew my drink on the screen.
hahaha you are going to be such a funny and cool dad and you will give Maddy such a good sense of humor!
“all i could think was…
this child is,
never, ever
allowed to go on
spring break.”
cold drinks all over Maddy are fine…be cautious with keeping hot/warm drinks at her reach.
her photos would have been neat with drink all over her.
Your spring break comment made me laugh out loud. Thank you. I have a 16mo daughter and I don’t even want to think about any future spring breaks.
Hillarious! Too bad there were no pictures!
rootbeer and iced tea spills as a 1 yr old TOTALLY = no spring break for her later.
wish i could be there. *sigh* my daughter and i are completely smitten with maddy.
I think the trick here may be something to do with putting the top back on the bottle when you put it down….
Oh, how I love Maddy stories! My son is almost 10 months and know that this is in my future. I guess it is a good thing since he loves taking a bath. I would still love to meet you and your beautiful Maddy. Hopefully the next time I am in LA you are also:)
You should come to Toronto sometime so we can have a maddy meet and greet for all the canucks!!
patiently waiting
hope she doesn’t do this with a beer..ha
my daughter did that too so many times ….terrible 2’s and clean up was always messy, but i learnt to have patience from her for sure.
maddy is cute.
I am so sorry to hear about the messes! I feel your frustration. I am laughing so hard about the fact that Maddie will never go on spring break. Too funny!
No time for pictures? Is that a Matt and Maddy first? She must have made quite a mess!
Wait, you’re in New York!? I wish I had known!
Ahh just kidding. See you tomorrow, dude.
Can’t wait to see Maddy.
I can’t WAIT to hear why you’re in NYC!
Sounds like Maddy is going to be ready for a sippy cup soon!
HA!
And, the pink mountaintops are RAD.
LOL spoken like a true man and father.
Look at it as an important developmental milestone. There’s only one way to find out what it feels like to pour a drink over your head…you have to pour a drink over your head. And if it’s fun to watch Dada clean everything up, why not do it again??!
Just be careful not to leave unfinished beers around the house. LOL.
Well at least she’s consistent! I think it would have been funny to see a picture of that, but even more so, a picture of your face after the 2nd incident!
Matt – You are so genuine, I so enjoy reading about your “dadventures.” Truly an inspiration. Maddy is a very lucky little girl.
Classic! That is hysterical! I love the city and hope you are enjoying yourself…if I was closer, I’d be there!
Love it! Yup, just practice for the big Beer dump dad!
Yes, ShamWow, you have a couple right?
Beats vomit all to hell too, I imagine. Root beer, vomit, ice tea, vomit. Take your pick. Yup, the oh my god onsies have arrived.
take care
That is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh, I really needed it right now!
Hey Matt,
I’ve been reading for a little while off and on but have not yet commented. Your journey with Maddy is inspiring and your humanity is reassuring. I’m so sorry about Liz.
Let us know if you are ever in “the Philadelphia”, as you put it, and want some company. Or if you’re interested in checking out local bands. I happen to play in one — original music with a rock sensibility and world music influences. The band leader is amazing — Bill Koutsouros. Google him if you’re interested.
Come on out, if you’re in the area!
Hmmmm, at least she is consistent?
Anyway, new reader here and I can’t remember if I have posted before… whatever, hi! I am Jessica. Really enjoy your stories and your daughter is a gem.
Ah, the timing is off! We were just vacationing in the NYC a few weeks ago.
My niece used to make a huge mess with her food just so she could have a bath afterwards.
I love reading your blog!
Your daughter is absolutely gorgeous and so very lucky to have you as a daddy.
I live in Minneapolis– somewhat similar story, but also truly unique. I lost my fiance. But, there isn’t a baby involved or anything like that. I grieve for you everyday, just as I grieve for myself and everyone else out there that has lost someone they truly loved.
Take care, dear friend.
Aurelia
I guess I’m just wondering if this blog is a full-time job for you… how do you keep up with 150+ responses???
didn’t realize it was so hard to put the lid on a bottle of soda. geez!
or to learn a lesson the 1st time!!
glad you’re enjoying nyc. i love joshua tree!! have a great time!! and eat some of the hummus. it’s delish!
Good laugh for the day…..spring break is a long time off for Maddy!
i wish i was in nyc!! i love nyc!! my 26th month old little guy would love maddie b/c she’s blonde:ODhehe. i know you are in the LA area do you ever come to San Francisco area? have fun in nyc w/ maddie!!!
That’s really funny – my daughter and I are visiting NY from CA too! If toddlers are allowed (she’s 2 2/3) and she’s not falling apart by then, we might try to stop by and meet Herself!
i may just try to come hang out! i’ve been meaning to take emma to joshua tree
haha. i’m sorry but i don’t mean to be happy at the expenses of your pain. But I think maddy likes the feeling of cold liquid running down her head! If anything, keep only plain water near her!
Welcome to having a mobile and FAST child!
I would love love love to come down to the Joshua Tree, but I can’t make it! Next trip out here.
Have a great time!
I love reading your blog, matt!
always see happiness in maddy smile. its bring me happiness. Thanks for share, everything!

I so wish I was going to be home this weekend….going camping! I guess I will have to wait until next time you guys are in NY
NO FAIR!!! When will you ever come to MN to show that cute baby off?
I wish I would’ve checked the blog sooner! Won’t be in the city until tomorrow. (and even then, i’ll be in long island, not manhattan). Would love to meet Maddie next time you’re in New York!
3 baths in one day! She was a very clean little girl! Of course your trip to NYC is two weeks before mine….but I hope to make it down to LA again soon!
Sorry, but I had to laugh at your story. I think my mom can sympathize with you though because when I was about Maddie’s age I put my breakfast (fried egg with runny yolk) on my head…then I put my lunch on my head (don’t know what that was)…and apparently because I thought I was extremely funny, I had to put my dinner on my head too. All in the same day! That will be a story (Maddie’s story, not mine!) you will tell for ages!
I would seriously consider coming to New York to meet you guys. The only thing is I have plans tonight. darn! I live in Philadelphia so only a few hours away. I love the city so I do head up there a few times a year.
If you and Miss Madeline are ever in Philadelphia please let me be your unofficial tour guide! I will show you the city from a life long philadelphia girl…(ok I live in the suburbs but do head into the city a bit). So I will show you the fun side of the city…and of course the regular famous land marks. Of course you and Miss Madeline will have to have the unofficial cheese steak testing!
LOL
Fucking hilarious!!! Although I’m not sure it was so funny for you at the time. Think about you two often! Glad things are good. XOXOXO
hahahahah! love the spring break comment!
LOL! Too funny… and great idea!
Another new reader here btw… hi! Found your blog a while back, I think through the Spohr’s site. Will be looking forward to hearing more adventures.
LOL
Will you guys make anymore appearances in L.A. soon? I would love to meet you guys!
Tried to make it, but my 22 month old had a meltdown on the way. Would love to meet you and Maddy at some point!
Great seeing you and Maddie again. Even as tired as she was, she’s a charming girl. Some of it is just who she is, and some of it is the great job you’re doing.
I have a feeling she’s going to go straight from almost walking to running. Good luck!
I’ll post some pics next week, as my camera cable is in my desk drawer at work. Doh!
i wanted to come but i’m only 21 so i felt like you all would think i was weird. hope you’re enjoying NYC!
Did any pull the ‘Alabama’ line on you, “omg, you have a baby-in a bar.” We attempted that in L.A. when Vida was less than 9 months old. We simply wanted to watch a game in the middle of the day, Sunday! It was like going through the CIA, it worked out in the end.
My daughter is almost three. I have started taking note on how many messes she makes in a day. If I would have started when she was younger I would have a book by now! Have the wipes in arms reach AT ALL TIMES!!!
Balls!!! Grrr. I can’t believe I missed you guys *again*!! Hope you’re having a blast. We need to set up some kind of NY’er connection- a kind of first alert sort of thing- so we don’t miss you!
Hope the trip is going well. The weather is spectacular this w/e.
spring break comment has me ROLLING!!!!
Oh, sorry I missed it. One of these days I will be in the NYC when you are there…dang.
Well, there was no chance of meeting you in NYC to see if you actually do smell like money and cocker spaniels (although it would have been a real joy to), and let her go on spring break, Dad — with lots and lots of BLACK T-SHIRTS!!
Love the post! Loved the spring break comment. When i read it to my Husband, he said it was Fucking Hilarious! It so sounds like a comment he would make! LMAO!!
Love the spring break comment!!! Glad to hear things are going well!! Be blessed!!
Hi- I have been reading your blog for a few months now. I am so sorry for your loss. Your wife was really beautiful and she didn’t deserve to die. I would like to ask you to please talk with Jehovah’s Witnesses the next time that they come to your door. They will show your from the Bible that you can see your wife again on a paradise earth (God’s original intention for mankind) very soon.
you learn as she learns….altho they seem quicker than us…
she learns about her surroundings…daddy’s glass of “whatever” looks so shiny and fun…..you come in and find it all over her. You learn to keep things higher….it will work for awhile….
You do a wonderful lovin’ raising of that lil girl……
haha so cute!!!
So Maddie’s trying to tell you she likes showers, I think.
“… ya take one down and pour it around, 98 bottles of root beer on the floor! 98 bottles of root beer on the floor, 98 bottles of … “
I know, can we do meet and greets in LA?
I have no kids of my own but I taught preschool for a few years, I’ve babysat forever and I’ve nannied for a few families.
Let me know if you ever need a babysitter!
Matt I have now caught up on your blog, I started reading it after you appeared on Oprah, and I read it from the beginning, you are great dad, and I talk about you all the time, just like if I knew you!! If I ever make it out to the Los Angeles I would love to meet you and Madeline, I have a little boy who is 15 months old. Take care and I’ll be waiting for your new posts.
And never let her get her hands on baby powder. Unless you like the look of snow inside of your home…
You should just start a tally of all the messes. Then when she’s older and she thinks you’re totally uncool, you can be all LOOK WHAT I PUT UP WITH FROM YOU, YOUNG LADY.
No?
Hi Matt, I’m new to your blog and am catching up to the present by going through the archive – I’m right about August 2008 and will catch up soon. This is not related to your latest blog but I thought you’d appreciate it. While I haven’t been reading your blog for long, I have taken notice of your love affair with robots. Saw this on msnbc today and thought you’d want to read it.

interesting article in the NYT about polaroid film. instantly thought of you.

My Madeline (22 months) loves to pour stuff on her head, too!! Also, any food she decides she doesn’t like (applesauce, Laughing Cow cheese) go straight to the hair! Isn’t it nice to know it happens to everyone:) Last week, it was yogurt. We were on our way out the door, so Maddie had to have cotton candy yogurt head for about an hour. That’ll teach her!
That is hysterical! From this side of the fence anyway.
Hey it is time for a new post!
Ok. This does not end. My niece is SEVEN and whenever we have a pitcher of soda or tea ordered for the table everyone jumps up at the table in a panic if it winds up within 2 feet of her. She SO wants to pur for people, unfortunately if she gets to it before we do, she does in fact wind up pouring on ALL of us.
Hi Matt: I wanted to share a montage I made for Sophia’s First Birthday. She will be a year old on June 13th. We are at the same place you were in March. As the days get closer the anticipation gets worse. We decided not to celebrate Sophia’s Birthday on the actual date the 13th since it will be the one year anniversary of Jackie’s passing. We will be holding a small memorial at the cemetary on the 13th for a few of Jackie’s friends and family. We will be having a family party for about 50 people the next day. I don’t need to tell you how we feel because you know. Thanks for sharing your life with maddy with us, your blog helps so many people I know because I am one of them.
Let me know what you think of Sophia’s first year.
Rosann
P.s. if you have any words of encouragement for my brother you can e-mail him at

LMAO at the spring break comment! I live 20 minutes outside NYC and would have loved the opportunity to meet you & Maddy on Friday, but I only caught up on my reading today and missed you guys. Damn it. I’m a single mom with a 13 month old boy, so I would have tried my damndest to teach my son to say “hey baby, can I spill you a drink?” The probability of success would have been slim to none, but worth a shot for comedic effect.
Your daughter is absolutly adorable!! You are one heck of a father and she is blessed to have someone like you!
Matt come on over to my blog and grab your award
http://orionsmama.blogspot.com/
Matt, you’re killing me… I spent a full week doing practically nothing but reading your blog and becoming obsessed with your life (in a non stalker way, promise) and now your silence is killing me. I know you’re busy but I need updates!!!
You just made me laugh, and then like two whole minutes later made me laugh again…funny guy.
You just made me laugh, and then two whole minutes later, laugh again–funny guy.
Last night I dreamt I cheated on my husband with you.
You were great.
It was nice meeting you and Maddy in NY! She really IS that cool a kid.
Hope the rest of your trip was good too, and that she avoided further beverage-related disasters.
LOL too funny! More messes will come, all you can do is laugh it up!
LAUGHING MY ASS OFF! Only a father would think that!
