yesterday.
maddy sneezed
an entire mouthful of
strawberry yogurt
at me.
i said, “shit” outloud.
then i remembered
that she’s trying
to mimic my words.
like on thursday
night i said, “goodnight”
and she said something
that sounded like, “nye”
or like saturday
when i pointed
at a barking dog
and told her
what it was,
she said something
that sounded like, “dah.”
so as she sat
in her highchair,
i pointed at
the yogurt [...]

she loves that thing.

that toy looks harmless, right?
