challenge.

over the past few weeks a few of the women who follow me on twitter have been having a little bit of fun at my expense.

actually, they’ve been having a lot of fun at the expense of my beard.

me with beard and horses.

they’ve been saying things like:

@Buck21 said: “I’m scared of the swine flu.Perhaps I’ll just curl up in @mattlogelin’s beard & hunker down for the duration of the flu season.”

@essembee said: “Any remaining shreds of my dignity? Hmm. Probably in @mattlogelin’s beard, with all the other hopelessly lost stuff.”

@rachelanna said: “$50 billion invested with Bernie Madoff…did anyone check in @mattlogelin ’s beard?”

and my friend, sara jensen has taken to calling me, “beardo”

now, this beard of mine has been around for years, but it’s current incarnation has been growing for a few months, unchallenged by my clippers.

it has become part of the family.

i love it like maddy loves throwing apples.

(that’s a whole lot).

and while the teasing is all in good fun, i figured i could part with my friend beard just to shut these smart-asses up and raise money for the foundation.

so. i told the ladies that i would shave my face clean if we could sell 100 tickets to the liz logelin foundation gala by next friday, sept. 4th.

consider it a challenge.

(oh…and i’ll get a kate gosselin reverse mullet haircut and wear some ed hardy gear to the gala if we sell 200 tickets by the 4th. for reals.)

and finally, a letter to my beard:

dear beard,

i will miss you.
but this is for a good cause.
and besides, i can bring you back whenever i want.

your pal,

matt

beard - i will miss you if you leave me.

(and while you’re at it, don’t forget to sign up for the llf 5k).

Could we make it interesting and start up a ‘keep the beard’ fund?

It’s almost tempting to buy a ticket to something I can’t attend just to this.
I would definitely miss the beard too.

While the demise of the Face-Yeti is reason enough to buy a LLF Gala ticket, the possibility of you sporting the reverse mullet blows my mind.

    What a brilliant idea.
Must have been someone mega-excellent who came up with that one.

If I had a rich uncle I’d totally hit him up for 200 gala tickets…maybe I do?!?

For all of you out of staters who can’t be at the Gala…feel free to still buy a ticket to “sponsor” someone who can’t get one on their own.

Love the video of Maddy. I think you should have people cast a vote with each ticket bought…either it stays or it goes. But, 200 tickets = a kate gosselin reverse mullet haircut and wearing some ed hardy gear (and pictures of you appearing in that get up) is a must

Matt, long time reader, first time posting…Just wanted to pass on some information that others may find helpful to maximize donations to Liz’s foundation.
My company will be holding their annual Giving Campaign in the next month. I think many companies run theirs around the same time of year. Ours is an open campaign which allows us to donate to any 501 (c) 3 charity. The company matches employee contributions 50 cents on the dollar. So a $100 donation becomes $150. The Liz Logelin Foundation is getting my contribution this year.
Maybe some of your thousand’s of followers should keep your foundation in mind if there is a company campaign in the near future that allows employees to specify their favorite charity. And be sure to check with your HR departments to see if there are any processes in place to match charitable donations.

Wow Matt! I just looked at the video and I can’t believe how many of Maddy’s smiles look like Liz’s smiles from your pictures… it really is breathtaking.
On a somewhat different note- I’m 32 and I have never seen my father without a beard… nor are there any pictures of him as an adult without a beard. As far as I’m concerned that is just his face. One day he got it trimmed… waaaay too close, I could almost see skin… I almost threw up, it walked and talked like my dad but it was totally NOT my dad… this reaction from a 30 year-old. Point is- Maddy may not recognize you for a little bit, she might think that’s how big your face really is! Good luck! I hope youu raise 300 tickets but I say, keep the beard.

Oh you’re so in for it, Beard! Our youth minister did this growing up…he said he’d shave if the youth could raise $500. We ended up having a serious competition the youth “Buy the Beard” campaign vs. the older adult “Save the Beard” campaign. Over $2500 later, the beard was gone and no one recognized him!!

    WAIT!!!

    Just found this:

Halloween may be four months away, but it’s never too early to come up with a costume.

And if you’re going as the sure-to-be-popular Kate Gosselin, don’t pull out the hair clippers.

The mom-of-eight’s signature reverse mullet can be yours at buycostumes.com – thanks to a wig.

The online costumer retailer is now selling the “Kate & Jon Plus 8″ star’s asymmetrical hairdo for $14.99.

Dubbed the “Eight Is Too Much Adult Wig,” the blonde hairpiece is “smooth and face-framing in the front with a short and puffy back that’s full of volume.”

The “sleek and so stylish” wig “will make people think you have eight children,” boasts the site.

Controlling personalities and ne’er-do-well husbands are not included.

Although Gosselin’s bizarre haircut has been heavily scrutinized, the mother of eight defended her ‘do earlier this spring.

“It’s my attitude! Everybody wants it. It’s work,” Gosselin told Entertainment Weekly.

She added, “It’s not going to work for everybody. I’ve seen people come through the book line with thin hair and [it] just won’t work.”

And for dads that want to look like Jon?

Just stock up on Ed Hardy t-shirts and blonde 20-somethings as arm candy!

so…maybe everyone attending the Gala can wear the wig?

When your daughter can use it to rappel off the couch, it’s time for a trim. That should have been your first clue.

In a related story, the ZZ Top guys are looking to add a band member….

(PS: Thank you for posting videos of Maddy. So many of us out here love your little girl, and getting the chance to watch her grow…start walking and talking….well, I consider it a privilege and am very grateful you continue to share her with us.)

I was at the Minnesota State Fair today at the Kare 11 area. The Momslikeme group is sponsored by them and they were handing out bags. I thought that was the online site you had gone to for advice after Madeline was born. I talked about you, thinking that of course they would know about you and Maddy but they had no clue. ( I looked up your past blog and it was actually “cribsheet” that you turned to for advice.) I briefly told them your story and about the LLF. They said that you should go onto their website http://www.momslikeme.com and post info about the gala. They would love to hear from you and would support you in your efforts to raise money. I hope this helps your cause.

    Hey Matt-

Gail got me thinking. At my work(a local credit union here in Fresno) always finds any excuse to wear jeans on Fridays. We pay $5 per Friday and it always goes to a good cause(United Way, local schools, March of Dimes, etc). On Monday I am going to contact the person in charge of all the jeans days and tell her about the LL Foundation, hopefully we can get some serious cash raised for such an amazing foundation. I encourage everyone to do the same!

And I do have to admit that I have always wondered what you would look like without the beard, hopefully I will get to see what you look like without it.

When my children were little and were aware of our wedding photos for the first time, they said, “Mommy, that’s you because she has red hair…but who’s that guy?” Cleanshaven Daddy, of course! Their Dad has pretty much always had at least a moustache all their lives, some 34 years. I love the beard, but agree that yours needs a little trim..

Dude, I love your beard. You look just like Sam Beam from Iron and Wine during the earlier years. Now all you have to do is catch up to him now by growing out a lion’s mane for your head hair!

    Posted 8/30/2009 at 9:34 am | Permalink

maybe a compromise. Just trim the beard back to a normal length and promise not yeti yourself again. Don’t shave it all off, that would just be strange. But, if you do shave it, take the moustache too. You’d look like a criminal if you left it and took the beard.
We bought our tickets already and we can’t wait.

  88. Posted 8/30/2009 at 1:34 pm | Permalink

my dad had a mustache my entire childhood (hey, it was the 80s) and when he showed up to pick my brother and me up from daycare one day clean shaven, we refused to go home with him. hahaha… be prepared for maddy’s reaction!

I can’t afford a gala ticket, but it’s just as well — because if it makes you happy to have the damn beard (or even just not cringe-y and uncomfortable), I think you should keep every last hair, and grow it to your toes. (And not just because of all those studies that show the benefits of having pets…)

Nothing personal, but as long as you’re not bawling, I don’t give a flying fuck what you look like! I just want to see you (and Maddy) as happy and comfortable as possible. And besides, you know you’re going to get just as much ribbing for looking dorky without it as you’re getting for looking unkempt with it. (And what’s Maddy supposed to practice braiding and hair dying on if it’s gone?? Not to mention the hassle of traveling with mismatching visa photos…)

So when I send in my registration for two for the Walk tomorrow (sorry, two is all I can swing, so Bailey’s going to crash!) please credit it to the do-whichever-you-want column.

    See you next month!

Matt: After going back to the begining (3/24/08) and looking at you in past pictures I really think you should be happy to shave off the beard. Poor Maddy, she doesn’t get to see the face her mother fell in love with. Really, you look 100 times better without the beard. I hope the foundation sells at least 200 tickets.
Have you had time to watch the video yet? Would love to complete it with your music of course and maybe you can play it at the Gala Dinner. Let me know what you think.

Give maddy a kiss from her Chicago Friends. Hope to meet you guys soon.

I can’t believe those women said those things! That’s not nice. At all!
I do, however, think a clean-shaven face would be nice, as it’s been very, very hot here in L.A. Maybe it would help keep you cool???

  96. Posted 8/31/2009 at 3:38 am | Permalink

I’m feeling slightly ashamed now! I’d just like to point out that my tweet was more of a dig at myself than at Matt’s beard, which I have just shown to my mum who says she loves it and that it makes him look like Ulysses S. Grant.

for the love of all things holy, at least trim it. LOL

I’m torn about the beard. Current state–NO; trimmed–maybe. I will miss reading about the things in Matt Logelin’s beard on Twitter. I’ve burst out laughing at work and need a diversion and pondering what could be lost in there is highly entertaining. Whatever happens, just let Maddy watch, ‘k?

Your face is going to be SO cold!! Whenever my boyfriend shaves off his ’stash and goatee he always says his face is so freezing and says “why did I do this!?” and then decides to grow it back and keep it forever. Hopefully it won’t be cold that day, but I am sure it’s going to feel really weird!

Here might be another option Matt: my girls said they had two daddies…a winter one and a summer one, because in November, he started his beard on one daughter’s birthday and wore it all winter. Then, in April, we all watched as he shaved it off – on our other daughter’s birthday! Clean shaven/bearded…he was beautiful both ways. And they were never caught off guard or afraid of the change in him. This idea might work for you too! I like your beard like the one you wore in April 2008.

However, if you decide to go ala Kate Gosseling, I will give up my Starbucks addiction for one week and donate all the money to the foundation. Trust me, I have Starbucks at least twice a day so it is a pretty good chunk of money plust I love Starbucks and I will be on withdrawls :) You can quote me on that. :)

There’s an extra $100 in it if you shave one-half of it off (I leave it to you; either from the mouth down or up OR the left or right side) AND you’re seen (aka photo-documented) in public for a min of 1 hour (somewhere busy dude). evil, i know.

And PS > Eh, it will grow back in time for Christmas, yes? Think of the kiddies.

Can’t you up the bid by allowing someone to decide if you shave it, how you shave it, if it gets shaved into the shape of a robot, etc? I say auction the fate of the beard off at your gala. I’m sure the twittering ladies would agree that this is much more fun. You could agree to put the beard up for auction if the women sell the requisite number of tickets.

Just be warned. . . Maddy may be scared. My husband had a beardsimilar to yours one cold Minnesota winter (he claimed it was because it kept him warm, I think it was because he was too darn lazy to shave). When he finally did shave (head and beard both) and came downstairs my 18 month old daughter wouldn’t quit screaming. She kept hearing Daddy’s voice, but it was coming out of some younger-looking version of Telly Savalis (pardon my spelling). It took her an entire day to warm back up to him. Let us know how it goes. . .

Ok, I read your posts often but have never commented, but this just has to be said!

You’ll be happier when I’m gone
I’m much too busy to worry
I’ll be sad and you’ll feel bad
But I know you won’t be sorry

And as I turn to go
    Please don’t wave goodbye
    I refuse to cry
    On roads that are paved
    With men who behave
Like they know where they’re goin’

And I’ll stop along the way
And it’s then I’ll think of you
And I’ll wonder if you knew
    When I got blue

    And things got weird
    And I started growing
    Bob Dylan’s beard
