i love this
photo, taken
yesterday by your
nanny in india, rachel.
i saw it this
morning as you
sat on my
lap, crushing cookies
into crumbs,
crumbs that are now
stuck to my socks.
but back to
the photo…
when i saw it,
the lines from
a song immediately
started playing
in my head…
“we can ramble hand in hand across the grasses of our land
i’ll kiss you for each leaf on every tree”
your mom loved
this song, and i
can still remember
her
face lighting up
when this song
would play.
and i can
just picture her
face lighting
up as she
watched the two
of us,
you and me,
walking through
the grass toward
nothing at all.

tears are falling down my face. And probably Liz’ face, too. Who sang/wrote the song?
Beautiful, as always. As a mom, I can tell you she would be lighting up at this sight. You are doing such a wonderful job, Matt.
absolutely beautiful!
Not walking towards nothing, you’re both walking towards a new perfect. Together.
Wow…that’s all I can say. Wow….
this is one really stunning photo. thank you for putting it up. the colours, the space, the sheer beauty of your surroundings…
so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once….
What a beautiful photo – love it.
What song is that line from? I love how much you loved and appreciated and knew Liz.
I think its a Wilco song…
This photo speaks volumes about the times and the days to come.
Well done, Rachel!
Thelicia got it right…you are walking hand in hand toward the future, even it’s a different future than the one you had planned.
Rachel~this picture is priceless. I’m so glad you captured this tender moment for Matt and for Maddy (and selfishly for us/me).
this makes me smile. the picture is awesome in so many ways. your words add so many dimensions to your photos.
i wholeheartedly agree with kristen when she says “i can tell you she would be lighting up at this sight” because i smile

i see anything remotely like this with my daughter and husband.
you know, i feel like an ass even relating my life to yours and thinking of the ways that our lives are similar but so aren’t. but i guess that could be one of things that initially draws people to you and maddy. we are all very lucky that you allow us, the strangers/friends of the world, to observe your lives. you are actually making us better people by sharing your lives with us.
lucky us.
The song is Hesitating Beauty by Billy Braggs & Wilco.
This amazingly beautiful photo takes my breath away, and I especially love the comments you leave under the photos…
You are on your way…beautiful
Liz would be so happy to see that. I know that, because I am so happy when I see my husband and son walking like that.
There is nothing better then seeing a Daddy love on his child.
Love these “from behind” pics. Like great photography, they allow the viewer to tell the story.
Such a great picture, and I am positive Liz would have loved it!
I love this picture. This brought tears to my eyes. Such a great memory and more to come for you and maddy.
Wow, just wow! Awesome picture, and the words you put with it are just powerful. Thanks for sharing your lives with us. I have to say this little moment has totally made my day!
Wow! Amazingly beautiful picture of an awesome father/ daughter bond! I’m sure Liz would love it too! and she’s so proud of you, Matt! Thanks for sharing! (thanks Rachel for capturing this tender moment)
I had to add “walking towards your future”
goosebumps…….so amazing!
What a great picture! As a Mom, there is nothing I love better than seeing my Husband and my boys together. I have pictures of him like this, holding their hands and it always reminds me what is good.
precious picture of ya’ll…i think liz would approve
dammit, Matt, you make me cry almost every day! Thanks for that.
So happy for you guys that you seem to be enjoying your home-away-from-home so much!!
This is a beautiful picture of the two of you and I think it is wonderful that you are capturing these moments for Madeline. You are an amazing person and father, I know Liz is so proud of you!!!
Even though you cuss like a sailor, you’ve got to be one of the best daddies ever made. Thanks for inspiring me to be real and love my kids and show them my true self.
Beautiful picture Matt….I know Liz’s face would light up with delight seeing you two walking hand in hand…off to a new adventure
This picture had me in tears even before I read your words, and then I REALLY cried. All good. Just beautiful and perfect.
Rachel is taking the most amazing pictures with her two perfect subjects!!!! Great job, Rachel!!!
Matt,,,the words that you write are just breathtaking!
I got chills and tears welled up in my eyes when I read what you wrote for the beautiful picture. Damn it Matt, I wish so much Liz was still here for you both
Know you are doing a great job w Maddy and strangers are all here for you always!
Ok, now I am crying – so precious. You sure do have a way with words! Can’t wait for the book. I just keeping thinking about the person Maddy is, has become and will become because of you and all of your adventures and life experiences. It would be pretty cool to hear from her in 20 or so years from now…and to see the person she has become…awesome.
i am so enjoying these photos from India! I love it! Never had the desire to go but now I am getting there. Have fun!
The song that comes to my mind is Neil Diamond’s “Headed for the Future”. Wow. Awesome photo!
