we’re back in
los angeles after
a couple of weeks
of travel.
we had to fly
back to minnesota for
for my friend nate’s wedding
so we made a
week of it.
the first saturday
was spent on the
golf course, in a backyard
and at a bowling alley
as we celebrated
nate’s bachelor party.
an awesome time
was had
by all, mostly
because we hadn’t
all been together since
my cousin josh’s
wedding reception in 2008.
brooke worked in
her old office
in st. paul and
maddy spent most of
the trip traveling
between the grandparents
while i was
stuck in a
hotel restaurant/bar
working on
finishing up my book.
i was able
to sneak out a
couple of times
to take some
photos around town.
i also took a break
to do a little
swimming with
maddy.
aj, sonja and emilia,
and maddy’s uncle
adam and auntie holly
brought her cousin
ava to join us.
it took maddy
a few minutes
to jump in,
but she eventutally
got changed and
into the pool.
it was a ton of
fun and a much
needed break for me.
saturday rolled around
and it was
time for the wedding.
it took place
at nate’s grandma’s
farm in wisconsin.
after nearly a full
week of rain and
shitty weather,
the skies cooperated.
lots of sunshine, few
clouds, and most importantly,
no rain.
we took a couple
of photos before the
show started
with his wife
in the crowd
and just one day
from her due date,
josh officiated the ceremony
(he got ordained on the internet in 2002 and has now performed three weddings, including my brother nick’s wedding in alaska a few years ago)
after a short
ceremony, josh
pronounced nate and stacey married,
and then it
was time to party.
aj was asked
if he was a
quarterback in high school
which drew a
laugh from everyone,
but no one laughed
louder than his wife.
after the
football game,
we jumped on the
tire swing
and relived our childhoods.
then it was time
for the reception…
into the barn
we went
where we had an
incredible meal
prepared by an
award-winning chef.
after dinner
we rushed out
to take a
few photos
while the sun
fell from the sky
after the sun set,
we headed back
to the barn for
the reception.
we had a couple
of drinks
which lead to this:
by 11:30 we were
all exhausted so
it was time
to go.
stayed in a hotel
in the town
of new richmond
where i talked
to the owner about kerala.
after a few
hours of sleep
we were up and
on the way to
the airport.
my mom and stepdad
met us there
with madeline
so we could fly
back to los angeles.
the plan was to
stay for a couple
of hours then
head to san francisco
later that evening,
but we had
to delay our trip
a couple of days
so i could do
some additional
work on my book.
since maddy has
been showing some of
the signs that
she’s ready to
get started,
we went out and
bought her a potty chair.
let the fun begin.
by tuesday night
we were in
san francisco to help
grandma candee and grandpa tom g.
celebrate auntie deb’s
law school graduation.
the first night
in town found us
eating an amazing
dinner prepared by deb
and her roommates.
just as last week,
maddy spent the
majority of the week
with her grandparents
and of course, her auntie deb.
i took a short break
to get some
fresh air
while maddy took
a sort nap.
the next day
we braved a bit
of rain

as we went
out for lunch.
the next day
maddy crossed the
road with a chicken
and auntie deb.
later in the week
we were joined
by brooke
and by
liz’s
cousin nichole and
her boyfriend rob.
brooke’s friend
kari and her kids
derek & mckenzie
met us where we
were staying.
they hung out
with me
for a bit,
but for some
reason found me
a bit boring,
so they headed to
the park
where maddy
and derek became
fast friends.
(i almost wish brooke hadn’t sent me that photo).
by saturday it was
time to head
to san mateo to
enjoy the maker faire
it was full of nerds
(i say that lovingly)
and as
tom pointed out,
he really felt
like he was with
his people.
i broke off from
the group and took
maddy to have some fun
we caught up
with everyone for lunch.
afterward, madeline played.
under a
rocket ship.
afterward, madeline
was exhausted so
while she
slept on grandma,
i did a little
shopping, picking up
a build-your-own
phonograph, gramophone and
vacuum-tube radio kits.
i will now
have something to
do when the book
is finished.
speaking of that book.
the writing is
now complete,
but that doesn’t mean
that i’m done.
now the bulk of
the editing begins,
which should
keep me busy for a
couple of weeks.
i guess i won’t
really consider this thing
done until
it’s on the shelves
(you can expect that to happen in march 2011).
that evening,
a great friend of
liz’s
stopped by with her son.
i hadn’t seen
chandra since she
was pregnant with quinn,
and i was
eager to
finally meet her
little man.
and so was madeline.
she helped him
remove his shoes
then everyone played.
after tons of fun
and tons of catching up,
grandpa demonstrated for maddy
something he used
to do when
liz
was her age.
soon enough it was
time for chandra
and quinn to
head home,
so of course maddy
helped him
get his shoes back on.
on sunday we
flew back to los angeles

and things have
been moving along
as they have been…
brooke at work,
maddy at daycare

and i was working
on some edits.
that is, until yesterday.
the day started off
normally, but
i got a call
from maddy’s daycare
saying that she hurt
her arm and that
she was crying.
i dropped everything
and made it
to north hollywood
faster than i
ever have
(thanks to some fast driving and some amazingly clear freeways).
when i got to the
place, maddy was
sitting quietly,
holding her arm
while listening
to one of the daycare
folks read to her.
as soon
as she saw me she
said, “daddy. arm hurt.”
then she said
something about oliver.
i don’t think
she was trying to
implicate him
in any sort of
malicious behavior…
i really think she
was calling his
name so he would
comfort her.
we drove home
where we met brooke.
she picked up
some non-recalled
pain medication.
then we all went to
the doctor
(but not maddy’s usual doctor).
i assumed it was
another case of nursemaid’s elbow
(she’d had that condition a few times now)
and if it was,
it would be an
easy fix.
in fact, last time
this happened, the doctor
showed me how to
fix the problem myself.
that said, i refuse to
try to do it.
i mean, i’m no
doctor and i’m afraid
that i’d do more
damage than good
so i’ve
determined that
the experts should
do the arm twisting.
maddy got checked
out and it didn’t
appear that it
was a case of nursemaid’s elbow
so we were sent to
the hospital up
the freeway for a
couple of x-rays.
as i got
maddy checked in,
she sat with brooke
and recited her
colors to the
woman seated next
to them, then
i heard a hospital
code over the loudspeaker.
fuck.
haven’t heard those
words in a little
over two years.
(i fucking hate hospitals).
maddy was brave
and sat still
through her x-rays
(i helped a little bit by holding her down).
the x-rays were negative,
so we went home
for a bite of
a cupcake

and a short nap.
she woke up
and it was obvious
that she was still
in a lot of pain.
we headed back to
the doctor

and this
time we saw maddy’s
usual doctor.
in fact, she stayed
late so that she
could see maddy personally.
after a quick exam,
she tried
the ol’ arm twist
thing, and on the
second shot,
she felt the
tell-tale pop.
brooke and i
both cried as
we heard maddy
cry, but our cries
were cries of relief,
because we knew
that after 6 hours
of pain,
maddy would soon
be feeling a
lot better.
to celebrate, we
went out and bought
maddy a big
yellow and black
dump truck.
then we took her
to play at
a playground and then
a ride on
a trolley.

maddy went to bed
with a smile.
and i was happy
that my little
girl was back
to normal.

also, wanted to mention that we were featured on the cover of the los angeles times last sunday in a story about the rising rates of maternal mortality in the u.s.

you can read the article here.
as always, i’m happy that our story can be used to help bring more attention to this troubling trend.
and of course, if you want to help us help other families who’ve lost a parent, please consider donating to the liz logelin foundation.

I try not be a downer, but I just wanted to say that this post made me weary. I cannot fathom the endurance one must have (or not beat themselves up for *not* having) to keep your pace.
I hope the next pop you hear is from corks celebrating your finish line.
So happy to hear Maddy is ok, and you guys have been having some fun. I love hearing about Brooke. You deserve this happiness.
I’m glad Maddy’s arm is feeling better. Poor little thing. What an ordeal! Wish the first Doc would have tried the arm twist thing to help ease her pain.
Sounds like you all have been super busy! So many wonderful adventures you go on. What will you do with yourself when she goes to school? You’ll have to travel less, unless you homeschool her. The world could be her classroom!
So glad she is ok. Matt it is so nice to see you happy. You and Maddy deserve it and Brooke seems to be a great fit!!! I cannot wait to read your book! Good luck with the last bit of it!
I think back to the 2 years + being a faithful stranger/friend/follower of yours – it is true what they say, Weeping comes for a season – but then there is JOY!
So happy for you 3!
S
Oh one other question – is there going to be a book tour?
@Sandy
maybe…that’s all up the publisher.
So glad to have re-found your blog. I love it and it’s been such a joy catching up with your posts.
Great update! My husband took the kids to the Maker Faire last year & they had a blast.
Poor Maddy’s arm – I would have cried too!
Photos in this post are epic. I absolutely love the polaroids and the barn reception scenes.
1.) I want Brooke’s job. I don’t care what it is, I want it! It’s awesome that she has so much flexibility and is able to travel with you two so much!
2.) You are a huge nerd. (I say that lovingly)
3.) If I would have been seated next to you guys in the airport when Maddy was lounged out and coloring, I would have been the annoying/creepy lady staring at her and smiling at how adorable she is! Such a cute picture:)
4.) That picture of Maddy crying almost made me cry. Poor thing! So glad she is feeling better. I can’t imagine watching my child in pain and feeling helpless like that.
5.) Do we really need a #5? I think it’s time for me to shut up! Thanks for the update! And continued luck with the book!!
Long time follower here. So happy that Brooke is in your lives. Got a little misty-eyed when I read the part about you, Brooke and Maddy all crying. Can’t wait until March 2011- might be the first book I’ll had ever read without CliffsNotes!
I’m going to have to get a photo of me from my parent’s house. I’m in London visiting my Nana, and in a stroller holding a big umbrella. A circa 1970 duplicate of the photo of Maddy–brought a smile to my face.
I can’t believe you stayed in New Richmond. I was born there 34 years ago.
BOOK TOUR! Be sure to come to Portland. I love reading your blog and seeing pictures, and I can’t wait for this book.
I’m SO relieved they fixed her arm!!
And holy shit – you DANCED?? Glad you have that on record! =)-
Love all the pictures, especially the ones that look like Polaroids ! Glad to head Maddy is feeling better !
Just read the LA Times article. Great piece- glad that it is being discussed and hopefully our rates will begin to decline soon !
WOW, that was a lot of traveling in such a short time. Glad you all enjoyed yourselves.
Poor Maddy. I’m glad she is feeling better.
Can’t wait for the book.
Love the tire swing pics! And oh man, I miss being that little so my daddy could throw me up in the air too…
Good luck with edits!
OH I would so meet you if you had a book tour.
Thanks for the update and happy editing!
Arm twister and hair cutter you are not. Great Dad to Maddy you are. The polaroids are neat. Love your sneakers.
Great post! So glad your book is almost finished! I’m still patiently waiting
I’m also glad you were able to figure out what was wrong with Maddy and that she is now feeling better! That picture of her crying is heartbreaking! I would have been crying too…
Any more travel plans for the future?
Your article was in the Chicago Tribune, too! You and Maddy looked great.
I read the LA Times article the other day, and it broke my heart all over again for you and Maddie and other families who have lost moms after childbirth. It makes me enormously grateful to have had two healthy pregnancies and births (and hoping for another great one is 6 weeks or so). It also makes me want to move to Norway or something.
Wow. You guys certainly dont lead a boring life! But I sure feel like I do after reading all that….
my daughter who is the same age as maddie has had her elbow popped out twice….the 1st time i took her to the hospital but the 2nd time i did it myself. made me a little nauseous but you’d be surprised how easy it is to do!!!
oooh…my daughter had that same arm thingy when she was two! YIKES! Poor thing, and poor you. Things like that are almost always harder on parents then the kid. Can’t wait for the book.
Book tour for sure! At least a signing at some fabulous books store in the Twin Cities!
Poor Maddy! My sister’s elbow pops out every now and then and pain can be just so much! Glad it is feeling better!
Found your blog a week ago… you are one amazing father and I cannot wait for the book to come out. =)
What a wonderful article – and I am so glad to see that this disturbing trend of maternal death is being brought to light. Too often, I hear of women choosing c-sections because they are “easier” or getting induced because their doctor will be on vacation when they are due. That is insane! Of course, none of this was the case with Liz, but I think the trend is going up because of this lax behavior towards childbirth. I am so glad that you bringing this to the forefront!
Whew,,,,,,I’m tired just from reading about all of that, practically, non-stop traveling, but it’s obvious that it’s in your blood, and you love it so much! So glad that Maddy’s arm is all back to normal, and my heart ached when I saw the pic of her crying. When you speak of Maddy and Brooke in the same sentence, and we see pics of them together; it’s so very clear just how much they love one another. I wish sooooooo much happiness for all 3 of you!!!!!!!!
Oh my. What a schedule! I got home from the first ’6 day vacation’ I can remember in a long time and I am exhausted. I cannot imagine how you feel after traveling SO much over the last 2 years.
As always– Maddie and darling
Happy to hear you’re on the editing portion of your book! Woo-Hoo!!!
I’m so very happy for the three of you. You better be taking good care of Brooke
I know how hard it is moving and adjusting without family nearby.
We are patiently waiting for Brooke to write a post about the real matt! LOL.
Best Wishes,
Lori
I am so sad from watching that video of Grandpa and Maddy. I am wondering how he is doing after losing his daughter. Obviously, it is wonderful that he has you and Maddy, just felt sad for him.
Oh poor Maddy! I am glad she is feeling better, the pic were she is in pain made me wince thinking about that arm pop. I am so glad Brooke is there for her. I know Liz is somewhere smiling and I know she is happy that you have found someone that cares about Maddy and buys her big frosted cupcakes =)
I swear, you do more in a day than I do in a month and that means that you’re full of the AWESOME.
Poor Maddy!!!I’m so glad that it wasn’t something serious with her arm! You are busy busy busy as always!!!
Wow, Matt dancing and it’s recorded for posterity!
Sounds like a great couple of trips.
BTW, that is a great article.
phew! what an update! you two (well, three, since brooke counts!) travel a lot
so great you get to spend so much time with your and liz’s family.
so glad to hear that madeline’s arm is all better!!
So….we have the same potty chair and to make it sing you have to cover the two little sliver pieces in the bowl of the chair. Took me a while to figure that out and by now you probably have too but just in case, thought I’d help you out!!!
So happy Maddy is all better. So sad when they are in pain and we are helpless! Good post, looks like alot of fun had by all here in the MN and in Sconny!
Oliver and the elbow. Not to point fingers at anyone, but he may very well have been yanking on her arm to come and do something- it doesn’t take much at all. My son was 2 when his first went out- and it was from another child at daycare trying to get him to wake up from naptime and play.
Bet I’m the first to ever tell you Maddy is a doll, right???
And I bet Oliver is the first of MANY boys that will think so, too.
Please excuse me if I’ve missed something, but are you and Brooke dating exclusively? Or is she family/nanny? It’s not important, and I know this question is personal, but enquiring minds want to know.
So glad your book is almost finished. You’ve worked so hard on it – can’t wait to get my copy! So when are you coming to Cincinnati for your book signing???
w00t w00t! Glad to hear that you’re onto the next stage of your book – it has to be a huge relief to have the first stage completed.
I told my nerd/geek husband, “Honey, you have Dragon*Con to go hang out with all your nerdy/geek friends over Labor Day weekend. At some point in the future, I want to go to the Bay Area Maker Faire.” That was before I saw your pictures of the event. Now I think that he would also find some of his own kind to hang out with and be perfectly happy too!
Oh, that photo of Maddy crying is so sad! I’m glad it ended up being an easy fix in the end.
Okay, the big question – where did Maddy get that adorable pink floral coat?! It’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen and kind of wonder if it comes in my size.
the photos in this post were epic.
i’m glad that maddy is doing better. you’re doing an excellent job with her, i hope that you realize that. & brooke is an excellent addition to your little family.
Aw, poor girl. I’m glad she’s on the mend.
And….I have to say that Wisconsin girls are the BEST (I may be biased on this) so I’m in love with Brooke. I don’t know how you two are going to figure out that Packer vs. Vikings thing though. I wouldn’t budge and Brett ain’t coming back so…good luck with that whole thing.
Can’t wait for the book!!!!!!
I’m happy that she’s OK and soon to work on potty trainning. I mean, seriously, I would love a potty like that for myself. It SINGS if I do it! HOW AWESOME IS THAT? LOL
Also, you’re such a great dad, Matt. I’m proud of you. I’m sure Liz is too.
Hugs!
It’s so cute that Maddy has two boyfriends. Luckily at that age it’s harmless!
I am also a huge nerd and would’ve been asking R2-D2 where Han Solo was because I am his Princess Leia (not that skinny bitch, Calista Flockhart!).
My friend’s husband painted the mural at the beginning of your post. Weird seeing them here.
Have you seen Exit Through the Gift Shop (Banksy’s movie about street art)? So good. Your first photos reminded me.
Thanks for the update. Glad you’re all doing well. That pic of Maddy crying is heartbreaking.
Great post. I was bummed I missed the article in the Times. I swear it was not in my local edition down in south OC–I know, a world away from LA. Was it a Sat/Sun combo edition?
At any rate, thanks for the updates, photos, and I’m so glad Maddy’s arm is better. Good luck on the editing phase.
Matt-my husband and I had that same potty chair for our son (blue-not pink!) and after awhile it became possessed and would start singing for no reason when no one was in the bathroom. I’ll tell you what….it will scare the s**t out of you the first few times it happens! We finally had to take the batteries out of it. Good luck with the potty training, you cannot believe how much easier it makes life!
So glad to hear that Maddy is ok….just reading you describe the arm twisting gave me chills! Poor thing! And can’t wait to hear the stories/adventures of potty training! Can’t wait for March 2011!! Be blessed!
Thank goodness Maddy’s regular doctor was able to help her with her arm. Poor sweet baby.
Hooray for seeing friends and family and safe travel.
Congrats on finishing the book. I can’t imagine how relieved you must feel to have met that deadline. I look forward to buying a copy next year.
Thanks for sharing the LA Times article. I cried when I read the last several lines.
Any ideas on how to make regular digital photos look like poloroids? I love the pics – you have an eye for a great photo!
Good luck with the book!
Are those real polaroids?
Wow, you guys have been busy. Glad Maddy is ok.
Have a great holiday weekend!
@Danielle
yes, they are real polaroids.
The video of X marks the spot just made my day. I haven’t heard that rhyme in forever, and Maddie and her no, no, no, *GRIN* when he started it is fantastic.
Poor Maddy! So glad to hear she is on the mend. I absolutely love the video of Maddy and Grandpa, she knows exactly what she wants! Keep us posted on the potty training. My daughter just turned two in May and I’m wondering when we should start this process. Congrats on finishing the book, I can’t wait to read it and I really hope your publisher wants to do a book tour.
Matt
I love reading your blog!! It makes me smile to hear about the happiness in your life now. I have read it from the beginning to now and what a journey you two have been on!! But with all the pain, its so nice to read about new happiness. Great update!!
xoxo to you and Maddy!!
Sabrina
Also I don’t think I can wait until MARCH 2011!!! Ugh so far away!!
my daughter is the same age as maddy and she has also popped her arms out a few times. The last time our dr. sent us to a physical therapist who said she has double jointed elbows and they hyperextend and there is no much we can do about it until she outgrows it. Awesome. They also showed my husband how to fix it but he, like you declined- he also thinks that stuff should be left up to the drs. ALso my neighbor told me it was because my kid doesn’t eat enough vegetables- also awesome.
here is my potty tip…
,
while the pink little seat is very cute
I would also have her sit on the big potty, too.
because sometimes, you have to re-train them to use the big one, after being used to the little one…like in restaurants, etc.
Plus, who wants to clean that out after she’s successful? yuck
did you hear that Gabba will be in LA Thanksgiving weekend??
I am thinking a nice big BBQ complete with lots of beer and yummy food is in order once you get your nose out of your book.
Good luck. Can’t wait to read it.
congrats to auntie deb on her graduation!
Hi Matt,
Your posts are few and far between now, but completely worth the wait and chock full of adventures. I love reading them!
Seeing Maddy with her grandpa made me wonder what Liz looked like at that age….any thought to posting any pictures of her? I’m just having a feeling that Maddy is a spitting image.
Have a wonderful weekend!!
I have been reading your blog for what seems like forever, but have never commented before. As soon as I see a new post, I can’t open it nearly as fast as I’d like to.
The video of you with Maddy melts my heart. You are such an amazing father. I love, love, love your blog, and I cannot wait to read your book. Keep up the amazing pictures, awesome stories, and post more adorable videos!!!!
Such a beautiful tribute to Liz in that article. Really touching.
Hey Matt! I just wanted to say that I’m happy that you and Maddy seem to be doing so well and are so happy (besides the whole elbow incident). You deserve nothing but happiness. Brooke seems like an awesome lady and seems to fit in perfect with you two (and she has an amazing fashion sense!). Maddy always seems so happy with her.
I will be first in line to buy your book next March!
OMG…you were in New Richmond, WI? I live in New Richmond and have read your blog since the Startribune introduced me to your story some two years ago. I love your posts and pictures! I cant wait to read your book also! You are doing such a great job with Maddie! My two year just potty trained too and he did much better on the big potty!
Maker Faire is awesome. We missed it this year, alas… Glad you got to go and that Maddy loved it too! (maybe she will be a maker geek someday!)
Glad that Maddy is doing better. Sad picture. I’ve been meaning to take my husband to the French restaurant that we met at oh so long ago—we should double some time. Happy to see that you guys are doing well!
The potty chair video is so cute. She sure loves Oliver! I am starting to potty train my daughter soon to, any tips? Maddy is turning into a beautiful young lady. You def. need to do a book tour and come to Indianapolis! Bring Maddy with you, we will have play date!
i really miss seeing the comparison photos between liz & madeline! it was so neat to see pictures of the two of them in the same place!
I’ve been reading your posts for awhile and as a new mom, I got talked “guilted” into taking a trip by plane to meet up some relatives since they have yet to meet my son. When I read the posts of your travels with Maddie, it made me realize that I can do that and she started younger than my own son.
P.S. Lucky you, starting to potty train
would you share what your tattos say?
congrats on completing your book and good luck with your edits. I can’t wait for March 2011.
Maddy looks wonderful. You look happy. and I think Brooke is part of that. You all deserve happiness. plus there are more pics of you now on your blog
i have to say, i never thought i’d watch a video starring a potty chair and say “awww.”
beautiful pictures. congratulations on being *almost* done with the book.
matt, are you trying to bring the polaroid cam back? only you could make those resulting pics look good, you know that right.
glad Miss Maddy’s arm is better =)
joy and peace
My husband grew up in new richmond, wi. small world….good update, i can’t wait for the book!!
The pic of the 3 of you is so damn cute! Heading over to read ur newspaper article now but after clicking the link and seeing the pic, I had to head back HERE to ask what the tats on ur upper arms read? Also? That pic is incredible!
nursemaid’s elbow totally sucks.
especially when accompanied by the guilt if you happen to have done it-
Lorne poped our little one’s shoulder out when she was tiny- and i think he might have felt worse than she did..
I remember this happening to Maddie when she was tiny- good thing she is a tough cookie.
You deserve to have someone share those tears weather they be relief or fear…
As a faithful follower/stranger…I was so excited to read a brand new post!!! (Little like Christmas…) Very happy to hear that everyone is happy, healthy, and thriving. The LA Times article was great and the photos were even better. Your story will be immortalized soon and I’m counting the days till March. All my best to you and yours.
i hope your book isn’t as long as this post.
Poor Maddy. I used to experience this same thing with my arm when I was a little girl, but my doctor called it “Supermarket Elbow” for all of the times that your mother pulls your arm at the supermarket:). Poor girlie, I know how much that hurts. My parents were also not willing to pop it back in, meaning that I spent many a days at the doctors. Luckily it stopped happening when I was about 4.
Looking forward to the book. Hugs to all three of you from Canada.
So glad to see you all looking so very happy!
Those videos of her… she is yummy!
I love their language!
I can’t decide what I love more your blog or everyone elses comments (well most of them…ben and please answer amelia. inquiring minds want to know.)? I feel like one big stalking family.
And for the record: I love both equally.
I am WAY behind. Is Brooke Matt’s girlfriend??
Oooooh, the arm story made me cringe. Why, oh why can’t I wrap my child in bubble wrap for the next decade or so?
i always love coming here because you save up your stories and photos, and your posts are always full of maddy goodness! so sorry about your day of baby girl being in pain, and of course having to be at the hospital. last month my daughter smacked her head on our fireplace and cut her eyebrow open – it was a horrible feeling having to hold her down while the doctor treated it. i saved my tears for later in the day after she was asleep. what a helpless feeling as a parent.
maddy is so incredibly beautiful. love the swimming pool photos and the outdoor ones that show off her blue eyes & her pink sneakers! (:
cheers!
ouch on the arm.Our friend was at the Marker faeri. He was the dude with a Zebra tail and was running the giraffe
Hey Matt,
I live here in Minneapolis, and I am really curious as to where all those pictures were taken. They are amazing and would love to go and check them out!
Ooof, poor Maddy! That photo with her eyes welled up with tears says it all. She’s such a beautiful little girl—glad she is feeling better now!
Thanks, as always, for your wonderful blog. :::sigh:::
FYI- -that same article was in the Chicago Tribune, too. I gasped when I saw the pic of you & Maddy. I’m like Hey I Know Them! Well, not really…but feel like it. Weird, huh?
I’m WAY WAY behind as well. So Brooke is the new love in Matt’s life?
Lovely to see pics of you all hanging out in the Bay Area! And you made the trip to San Mateo for the Maker Faire! Yes, it was nerdy but fun, wasn’t it (that’s my neck o’ the woods). Great to see you all so happy.
The potty chair video is gorgeous <3. I love that she says its "our" potty chair, like you're all going to use it. Good job with the sharing, Maddy, but I don't think that's a good idea
And OMG it sings to you while you wee!?!
Also, your photography is amazing (though i'm sure you know that)
Great LA Times article.
Awesome pictures, as always.
P.S. I sent you an e-mail about this before. Not sure if you got it or not. Anyhoo. Just wanted you to know that I’ve followed your journey pretty much from the beginning of your blog. I was always wondering how someone would get through something like that… Then, in January of this year my boy-friend passed away, just 3 weeks after we found out that I was pregnant. I think I’m still a mess on most days… Thank you for sharing your journey.
hi matt and maddy!
i’m watching you on cbs2 right now. i’ve followed y’all for quite some time. i love following your journey!
i’m a volunteer for comfort zone camp ~ a free camp for grieving children. you would make an amazing volunteer! check it out http://www.comfortzonecamp.org
you are amazing!
love,
melinda
I saw you on the CBS 2 news last night. I felt like I know you. The interview was amazing. You are doing such great things in Liz’s memory. So glad you’ve found happiness again.
I’ve been reading your blog for forever now, but haven’t ever posted. I love checking in and reading your updates…when I was looking at the wedding pictures from your friend’s wedding, I kept thinking, that farm looks so familiar….then when you mentioned you stayed at a hotel in New Richmond I had to laugh….see I was born and raised in New Richmond!!! So good to see pictures of back home as I haven’t been back for almost a couple of years now. Hope you enjoyed your very short stay in the City Beautiful
You need to update more!
Just a comment on a memory that sticks out- for me Matt, hands down it was the wedding picture of you and Liz, rose pedals at her feet, your comment that you must have said something funny- the look on her face, her hands up on her cheeks- such a private moment that got captured in picture. It touched a lot of people Matt- your mother had the most amazing comment about it and about Liz. If your words could capture that moment saved forever on film- you will have written about the essence of love.
Maddy is just precious. I’m sorry that happened to her arm, but I’m glad to hear it was an “easy” enough fix.
I too am happy to hear that things are well with Brooke too. Good on you.
As for the potty training….that’s an adventure for sure. My oldest daughter is 3.5, and my youngest is 18 months. It took my oldest about 3 weeks to get it. She was ready, and that was at 2.5. My 18 month old is no where near ready. It sure is an interesting journey though.
Hugs to you. Looking forward to your book.
@cadi, so sad to hear that news. I hope it all works out for you in time. What a tragic thing combined with the best thing in the world…Best wishes for a good journey.
Beautiful photos. I’m glad Maddy is feeling better and her arm is okay!
I love your polaroid photos – where do you get your film??
