last week we
had some visitors…
grandma candee, grandpa tom and
auntie debbie came
out to la
to spend some
time with us.
though we just
saw them a
month and half
ago, it had been
almost a year since
they were
last in our neighborhood.
time certainly
does fly…
not only did
i wanted to spend some
time with them,
but i had a plan…
(more on that soon).
everyone arrived on
friday, and the first thing
we did
(after the hugs)
was release the butterflies
maddy had been
watching since they
were just caterpillars.
after her friends
flew away to freedom,
she sang a few
songs and played the
guitar with auntie debbie.
saturday morning
we went to
silver lake for
some playtime,
and a trip to
the farmer’s market
where maddy played
some percussion instruments
and listened to
some music.
then she made
a very special
princess wand
which she later
used in an
attempt to make
her cousins ava
and isla appear.
after a header
into the sidewalk
(thankfully no injuries),
i tightened up her shoes
so she could go
shopping for some berries.
she did a
little dancing
before getting a
little tired and
jumping in the stroller.
we stopped for
a snack
and soon her restlessness
and tiredness
made it obvious that
it was time
to head home for
a nap.
during nap
time i talked to
everyone about my plan…
i thought it was
time to get maddy
a big girl bed,
and i really want
the goodmans to
be here when
i did it.
why?
well, they were
here back in january
2008 to help
paint maddy’s room
and assemble the crib that
liz
and i bought.
the same crib
maddy’s been
sleeping in since she
out grew the bassinette.
it was important
to share this moment
with them.
and as tom
pointed out, it’s
not actually about
building the bed,
instead it’s about
sharing these
experiences together.
and i know that
liz
would be so happy
that we were
doing so.
so after nap time,
we headed to ikea
and let maddy
try out a couple
of beds…
but she didn’t
really give a shit
about the bed
so much as she
cared about the bedding.
she insisted
on the
colorfully striped sheets,
which i was
more than happy to buy.
with her new
sheets and bed
in the back of
my car, we
stopped for some cupcakes
at her favorite
cupcake place.
as much as i
wanted to get maddy’s
bed set up,
we first had a
lot of cleaning/organizing
to do before
we made the change.
and i wanted maddy
to have one
last night in
the crib her
mom
picked out.
i thought maybe
i would be sad
to be making this
transition, but more
than anything i’m
thankful that maddy
is healthy and happy.
i’m just incredibly
sad that
liz
is missing it all.
***
the next morning as
we waited for
tom, candee, and
deb to arrive,
maddy sang a song
to her doll.
after some coffee
for everyone but
maddy and me,
it was time to
get to work.
brooke and tom took
maddy to the park,
deb studied for
the bar exam,
and candee and i
waded into the
mess that was
maddy’s room.
the plan was to
take everything out
and sort through it
in the living room,
which seemed like the
only possible way
to tackle such an
immense task.
how immense was it?
well, even though
we’ve given away
or donated countless
boxes of clothes,
toys and books,
we still had
a ton of stuff.
like three dresser
drawers filled with blankets
(41 blankets in all, many handmade and personalized, most now boxed up to be shared with maddy when she’s much older, to prove just how incredibly loved she was by a bunch of stranger friends)
and 73 pairs
of shoes.
yes.
73.
the photos alone
speak to the
absurdity of that
number of shoes for
anyone at
any age, but especially for
a 2+ year old.
in my defense,
a few things led to
this awful display
of conspicuous consumption/hoarding.
* her mother and i both loved/love shoes. i bought more than a few of the pairs you see on that table, but i didn’t buy them all…many were sent to us by stranger friends.
* it was impossible to know how many pairs she actually had because they had been stashed in various boxes in her closet, dressers and under her bed.
so know that
i know i have
a problem,
it was time to
do something about it.
of course, i’ll keep
some for maddy, but
i plan to donate
many of the shoes
to a local shelter,
and of course auction
of some for the
upcoming liz logelin foundation auction.
(more about that at the end of this post).
after her room was
emptied, it was time
to take down
the crib
and put together
the new bed.
maddy was thrilled
to test it out
and had no
intention of getting
out of it.
when bed time
finally came around,
she was excited to again
get into her new bed.
i had a few
concerns as i kissed
her goodnight.
i was worried
that she would:
1. roll out of bed in the middle of the night.
2. take her new found freedom and crawl out of bed in the middle night.
3. be scared about the changes.
to deal with
the first issue,
i placed some
pillows beside her
bed in case
she rolled out.
i prepared myself
for a long, sleepless
night if the
the other two
things happened…
she woke up crying
twice before 10:30pm,
but slept through
the night after that.
(i’m happy to report that it’s now thursday night and so far she still loves her big girl bed, continues to sleep through the night and has yet to roll out. even better, she hasn’t quite figured out that she can get out of her bed whenever she wants. (i hope she doesn’t figure it out until she’s through her teenage years). in fact, each morning calls my name, staying in bed until i come to get her).
***
monday
we took tom, candee
and deb to the
airport and i continued
revising my book.
tuesday and wednesday
were spent trying
to get rid of the
cold maddy gave me,
and wednesday,
i sent my editor
what should be the
final set of revisions
on my book.
(i’m awaiting her final read-through for confirmation that i’m actually done).
i can’t begin to
tell you how
excited i am
to be finished.
i don’t have an
exact release date yet
(i’ll be sure to let you know when i do),
but i can
tell you that it
will be come out
in april 2011.
***
tomorrow we’re
flying to minnesota
for a week
with our families.
speaking of that…
we’re having a pool
party at tom and candee’s
house, and if you’re
in the mpls area,
we’d love it if
you can join us.
drop me a
line at
mattandmaddy (at) gmail (dot) com
and i’ll send
you the details.
please include
“pool party” in the
subject line.

and don’t forget about the 5k the next day:
Make plans now to participate in our second annual 5k, Walk Run Hope, sponsored by Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 6 pm at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, MN.
The race entry fee is $25 for pre-registered runners/walkers (postmarked by 9/10/10 or registered online by 9/12/10) and $30 for race day registrants. Race t-shirts can also be purchased through the online registration site for $18 (which includes shipping). Race t-shirts and race packets are guaranteed for the first 300 pre-registered participants.
An award ceremony will be held following the 5k, and overall male and female winners, Masters (40+), Grand Masters (50+), and the top three finishers in each age group will be presented an award. The age groups are 0-14, 15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65+.
Please bring your families to enjoy some kid-friendly activities before, during, and after the race, and please plan to join us for an ice cream social immediately following the award ceremony.
This year, there are two ways to register: (1) Sign up using your credit card using our online registration form. (A service charge will apply.) You can also order an official race t-shirt without actually registering for the race using the online registration form. (2) Print, complete, and send our registration form in to the Foundation with a check for your entry fee. And if you’d like to raise money through pledges in support of your participation in the 5k, please check out our pledge form; the top individual fundraiser will win a prize!
Kids 12 and under who want to participate in the 5k can (1) pre-register for the race for $20 using our online or paper registration form (please note on the paper form that the participant is under 13 and remit $20, rather than the adult entry fee of $25); (2) run or walk in the race with their parents free of charge, provided a waiver of liability (included on the paper registration form) is completed on their behalf (if you choose this option, the children will not receive an official race-tshirt or race number and will not be eligible for an award); or (3) purchase an official race t-shirt through our online registration form and run or walk in the race with their parents, provided a waiver of liability is completed on their behalf (these children will not have a race number and will not be eligible for an award).
If you’re interested in helping sponsor the race, or know someone who might be, please download the Sponsorship Commitment Form.

It looks like you guys had a fabulous time with the family.
And please let Maddy know I am jealous of her new bedding!!
So sweet. Man she’s getting so big. Liz would be proud!
It is amazing to me how much she looks like a mini Liz! Yay on the big girl bed! My twins are about to be 5 & to this day they still wait for me! Hope everything for LLF goes awesome this weekend!
Will there be any fundraisers for the foundation in or around New York? I would love to help out in any way that I can.
Thanks!
-Carly
OMG – her room has a FLOOR!
I swear she gets more beautiful every day.
The video of her singing to her baby made me cry.
Safe travels to MN!
I think it would have been better for me had you just announced on the day of your book release that you published a book because the wait is going to be too painful
As for the first time in the big girl bed. I was instantly transported. My daughter discovered she could empty her dresser of every article of clothing and I lost her for the first time, she had crawled under the bed and chosen that as her sleeping arrangement. But really it was mostly uneventful.
A bittersweet moment for sure. Liz would have been so proud of how you have nurtured her baby girl and created a life for both of you that is full of so much joy and love.
that video of maddy and auntie deb is priceless.
dude, i’m jealous. my first baby was the only one who ever waited for me to come get him. the other three – STILL – climb out of their beds and into ours. my youngest is the worst, repeatedly smacking his skull into my chest and cheekbones. is a fantastic way to wake up.
and my god. i don’t know you, and i didn’t know liz, but i cannot IMAGINE liz being anything but hugely proud of everything you’ve done and are doing, for maddy, for llf, for the world with your book and site… it’s just incredible.
Love the updates and can’t wait to read the book!! I still feel I have an unfair advantage than most but I’m glad it’s all finally coming together!! You’re doing such an awesome job as a father and your love for Maddy has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen!!
I have been so bad at reading blogs in the last few months. I’ve missed three of your blog posts. Which…as I just said on Twitter, is roughly equivalent to 1.5 years in non-Matt Logelin blogging.
I can’t believe how much Maddy has changed since I’ve last read an update. She’s such a big girl. And as awesome as ever. I’ve loved reading the updates and seeing the photos.
P.S. I can’t wait to buy the book. As a writer, I get hives just thinking about the editing process (which I’m currently putting off for the last thing I just finished) and can imagine what it must have been like to tackle that process with your editor. But I cannot wait for April 2011 and am so glad you’re sharing this journey with us.
Great to see Maddy in a big bed. I would’ve had the rail on the outside
Barnslig bedding! Great choice
So stylish, that Madeline…
(longtime reader, sometime commenter, I’m working in the kids section at Ikea now and felt the urge to comment, haha!)
congrats to maddy on her big girl bed! i love that you are sharing all the little (and big) moments with liz’s family…
I love love love all the Maddie pics. I especially enjoy the ones of other people takings pics of her. Her own mini paparazzi! I hope the book will be available on kindle
Liz is not missing any of it.
She is there with every little moment. Every smile. Every tear. I know she is there. I would be if it were my kid.
What a big girl! I was thinking you were going to announce an engagement ;0)
Enjoy your week away.
Glad you had such a good time with the family.
I LOVE the bedding Maddy picked out – that girl has taste!
As for the shoes, a lady can never have too many pairs
x
Awesome new bed Maddy!
See you guys in September! We’ll be at the Gala and the 5K
Take care!
My daughter turned 2 in June and we have yet to make the toddler bed transition. I too am worried that she’ll get up at all hours to play once she’s “uncaged.” I think you should put some of Maddie’s dresses up for auction, I’d definitely buy some for my daughter. We have serious wardrobe envy. Where is the dress in this post from? By the way, I’m also from MN and your posts make me homesick!
Can’t believe how big she’s gotten! I took a bit of a break from the blogging world for awhile and she’s in a big girl bed! Wow.
If it’s any comfort, my 11 year old daughter still doesn’t get out and wander around, until I come to her. She will call out to me if she needs me. I remember my friends used to marvel at that when she was little, and said she would outgrow it. But, they were wrong.
A. One can never have too many shoes.
B. Big girl bed, sweet!
C. Yay, book completion.
D. LLF events, awesome. Looking at calendar, hope to do one of them.(daughter getting married in Oct. so really hectic in September)
E. Have a great visit!
I’m glad to see another parent who isn’t in a rush to move to a big bed! So many people, by 12 – 18 months are talking “big bed”. I plan on keeping my son in his crib until he’s at least 8
Hey Matt–
I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been loving your blog for ages now, and I only came out of lurkerdom because I recently went through a “Big Girl Bed” transition, and I know that anxiety very, very well. What I did was broker a deal (once she figured out she could get out of bed herself, which was unfortunately almost immediately) with my wee one that she had to stay in her bed until the sun came up. Then she could come get me or her dad, but she couldn’t go anywhere else. Just a suggestion, to maybe help.
That said, my love to all of you for sticking together, for Maddy (and Liz’s) sake. You and your family continually amaze me with your love and devotion.
-K
We made the move to the big boy bed in October, and my little guy called for us to come get him until the end of May. Of course it was one week before his new brother was born. Go figure. I turned around and there he was. Scared the shit out of me! She looks so proud of her big girl bed, I am so glad you shared it with Liz’s family!!!
Oh, Matt, seems like yesterday that you put Madeline in her crib for the first time. She slept in her bassinet for so long. I can’t believe she is now in a big girl bed.
So happy to hear about your book being ready for publication.
Very happy you had your in-laws in for the big bed celebration.
You are doing such a great job with Maddy.
aww a big girl bed. That is precious.
Yeah for Maddy! It is important to share these milestones, you’re a great dad & it seems you have wonderful in-laws. Take Care!
I was marveling about how grown up she looks in that brown skirt and then I read that she is in a big girl bed. Wow, just wow! I’m so glad you were able to share that experience with so many special people.
And, Maddy is a girl after my heart. 73 pairs of cute shoes is awesome!
holy shoes! That is amazing. I’m so excited for your book to come out! I love her song to her baby…sounded like she was saying, “rock a bye daddy”awwwwwwww
Your comment about the experiencing the transition from crib to bed with your family really touched my heart. Maddy is such a lucky girl.
YAY for Maddy! I remember when I put my first daughter in a big girl bed. It was more traumatic for me than it was for her! And it took her a good while to figure out that she could get out herself, so I think you have some time with that. My youngest girl was born in November of ’08, so I still have a few months before I need to worry about that event again!
She is just so adorable, and really does look just like her mommy. You must be so proud of her. I can’t wait to read your book.
And I’m sure you don’t sit around contemplating how awesome you are (or maybe you do?!) but you really are. Maddy is a very lucky girl.
I don’t know why, because I don’t have feelings and it normally takes a stunt double for me to cry, but this entry made me cry. I’m so, so happy for you. She’s such a big girl now.
You said it…the hardest part is knowing that Liz is missing it all. I know that she would be so proud of you and Maddy…especially since Maddy has an eye for decor and seems to be pretty girly. She totally picked out bedding that matches well with the art work in her bedroom walls.. Thatta girl!
We’ve only met once, and I know it’s probably totally creepy to hear (read) this, but you guys have made your way into my heart, and every time I read an update or see pictures of Maddy, I can’t help but feel love for the 2 of you. I really wish you all the best. You are doing such an amazing job with that little girl. She is so well adjusted, happy, and healthy! Maybe it’s the mom in me, but I just feel pride in every milestone Maddy reaches.
I hope we can make some time to get our girls together the next time we’re in CA (or if you are ever in Boston). I think it would be an amazing thing if they could form a friendship for years to come.
That bed is too cute and I would love that bedding for my bed! Of course my husband might not be on board with pink stripes, but he could learn to love it. Maybe.
I know I”m not alone when I say how much I am looking forward to the book- already on my list to buy rather than just wait for the library to get it.
Also, most importantly, good luck to Aunt Deb with bar exam studying! That was my own personal h-e-double hockey sticks last summer. The relief when you walk out the door of the last day of testing is incredible!
What an absolutely fantastic weekend! Yes, Maddy is looking so grown up. And, wow, a Big Girl Bed! My five-year-old has been complaining about her sleeping quarters, we have one of those cribs that converts to a “bed” except, well, it still pretty much looks like a crib, but missing one side. Gotta get her one of those.
We had that same butterfly garden. My kids kept the larvae in our kitchen, of all spots. And I’m squeamish. But it was a fascinating thing. We tried the ladybugs this year and, er, I somehow killed the first batch of them, had to get a rush shipment so kids wouldn’t know I was a ladybug killer.
While I cannot attend either of your amazing events, I am going to find some sort of good donation for the silent auction, promise.
Oh my how she has grown. And she did great picking out her own sheets and bedspread to match her room.
oh man!! the pink guitar robeez! the purple fancy-pants ones! the only ones i can’t spot are the super tacky free sneakers from the awesome family near the robot spot. keep them all!!
Great post. Love her big girl bed! Can’t believe she’s already out of the crib. Time really does fly.
I’m positive Liz is incredibly proud of both of you. Can’t wait for the book.
Have a safe trip.
WOW – a big girl bed! How amazing to look back at some of the pics of how big she is getting. I will remind you that there will be many many more sleep less nights (wait until she is a teenager).
My hope is to be at both the 5K and Gala.
Hope to see you then
~Jenny
You are so, so lucky with her easy transition to the big-girl bed. My almost 3-year-old transitioned a few months ago – and she is still wandering in our room in the middle of the night. And she knew right away that she had freedom – which is why, most mornings these days, she gets herself a popsicle appitizer for breakfast.
how awesome is it that she picked bedding that matches the paintings you made when you were waiting for her to be born?
I think that is great.. and it makes me happy all over.
She is mad huge.. and she just seems to get cuter and more wonderful everyday- who would have thought THAT possible ..
thanks- as always for sharing Matt.
I think I have said it before- .. but if i was ever granted super powers I am not sure what I would sacrifice- but would love to time travel to show you a glimpse of this blog today..
I don’t think you stumbled through parenthood- lucking out.. I think you are raising a wonderful child because you are a caring and devoted parent.
Heh, Mimi picked out the same bedding when we moved her to her big-girl bed. Ikea knows their hipster toddlers!
She’s not missing it. I just know it.
I gasped when I saw the picture of the shoes! Love it!!
What fun you had with the Grandparents and Auntie Deb! Mady is such a big girl in a bed already! Love her bedding, too. I’m also loving Auntie Deb’s new ‘do! It’s super cute and fits her so well. So excited about the book!
Have fun in Minn. and with the pool party!
Matt,
Love the post. Can’t wait for your book release. Trying desperately to bring you to our facility (Cerritos Library) for a book signing event. Would love to have you!
If you get a chance please contact me. We have an amazing facility and would love to play host for an evening.
How sweet that you included the grandparents in the Big Girl Bed excitement! I cried when I read that. I have to admit that in following your blog, my heart has always broken for all of you, but you and Maddy have been my focus. Reading this post and seeing the pictures just really got to me. As a mother of two girls, I cannot imagine the pain of losing one of them and then watching her baby grow up without her. If they read this comment, extra prayers are going out for them right now!
so glad the big girl bed transition has been smooth!
Having had to fight for visitation rights to my nephews, (after both parents were killed in a crash), i am happy that you include Liz’s parents and sibling(s) in everything you do with Maddy. It shows how much love there is in your families and that they accept Brooke also. Caring, compassion, understanding are just a few descriptive words for your family. Good Luck to auntie deb on the bar exams…How long before she hears anything?
Maddy is growing so quickly….enjoy every moment as time flies by. I look at my 2 “kids” (ages 32 and 26) and wonder where the years went.
Can’t wait for the book to come out in april. i’m looking forward to reading it. Have a fun trip…take care and stay safe.
Glad you’re back- missed the updates on you and that adorable girl. She’s getting so big, and you’re doing an amazing job.
How’s the potty training going? I will be so jealous if you have been successful at that too!!
Great update, as always!
For when Maddy’s out of diapers…I highly, highly recommend you get a waterproof mattress pad. In fact, get two…for when you’re changing her bedding in the middle of the night. AND, if you let her into your bed, then get a waterproof mattress pad for your bed. They really do work and they are much improved that you don’t actually hear the plastic.
I am just in love with Maddy. She is so beautiful and so smart. I am so amazed at her transition to the big bed. Way to go!
First of all, what a brave family you have to head to Ikea on a holiday weekend but it looks like it was the perfect idea in the end. I am glad that we have another year before we take the step to a big girl bed.
Second, what happens when Polaroid stops making film? I’m a little concerned myself. Should we be stockpiling some now in our freezers??? I fear my land cameras are going to simply end up collecting dust on a shelf as a display and no longer a working model.
Very cool new bed! And even cooler that you made it a point to involve Liz’s family in that process.
I love her choice in bedding! I can’t get over all of the shoes!
Maddy is such a big girl! I’m so glad the transition went well.
I can’t believe how many pairs of shoes that girl has! WOW!
“i’m just incredibly
sad that
liz
is missing it all.”
I am too.
This post was awesome. The pictures were amazing. Aside from Madeline displaying her musical talents. I think the part that touched me the most was that you waited for your in-laws to be present when you made the transition to the big girl bed. Madeline is blessed to have a family that loves her as much as hers does.
And…holy shit…big girl bed ALREADY?
P.S. 73 pairs is NOTHING! Wait till she’s 16.
congratulations maddy for the new bed!
time fly so fast…
More closer to God – that’s what we pray for you.
God bless you – as always…
Awesome collection of shoes, a girl really can’t have too many
Glad she still waits for you to come get her in the morning, that will change soon. We had to move my son to a big bed when he was 16 months because he was a climber and we wanted to avoid potential head injuries.
Got a little teary eyed reading about how you wanted to have the grandparents there to share in the big girl bed transition. So thoughtful and heartfelt.
Congrats on the big girl bed! I know we moved our youngest in her big girl bed around the same age (just before she turned 3), and it was a good 10 or 11 months before she realized that she could get out by herself! Every morning we would awake to the sounds of my girl yelling, “Hey, I’m awake, I’m awaaaaake!” So cute–and even now, she is still very good at staying in bed until it is light outside and not waking everyone up!
OMG!! I forgot you were from MN!! We just spent the 4th of July holiday there. We went to a Twins game and of course the Mall of America. Minneapolis is a great place!!! BTW, how many Twins shirts do YOU own? I think everyone owns at least a couple!!
Congrats on the book deal. Can’t wait to read it!! Congrats on doing such an awesome job raising Madeline. You are an awesome dad and I love following your blog!!
Holy Havana, that’s a lot of shoes! But really, I don’t think you can ever have too many.
I’m jealous of a 2 year old! She has more shoes than I do! Go Maddy!
Way to go on the big girl bed!! I moved my daughter (now 18 months) into one a couple of months ago and she still yells for me in the am!! Perfect for me …the longer it takes her to figure out she can actually get out ~the better:-)Great pics as usual!
Congrats on the move to the big girl bed. I was fortunate to have smooth transitions with both of my boys.
If you are concerned about her wandering the house at night you can always put a baby gate at the door to her room. We have done this for both our boys – mostly because our bedrooms are on an upper level and I didn’t want them trying to get downstairs in the middle of the night. Otherwise the gate stays open and it’s worked like a charm for us.
Maddy has good taste in bedding and holy cats on the shoes! I gotta say, I’m just a little jealous.
I want to buy some of those shoes for my little girl– when are you going to be selling some to raise money for the Foundation?
Matt — just curious, are you still wearing your wedding ring?
Congratulations on the book–how exciting! I wanted to ask you where you get Maddy’s clothes? She has the most beautiful dresses! My daughter is 2 years 8 months so close in age..we don’t have 73 pairs of shoes, but still way too many for a 2 year old! When I packed up her clothes that don’t fit anymore into plastic bins to put into the basement, I was stunned to see how many clothes she had had over the course of her short life! I easily packed away over 10-12 large plastic bins overflowing with clothes.
Love reading your blog and getting a glimpse into your life. You are a fantastic father. Can’t wait to read the book.
Her bangs have grown back nicely…now leave them alone, Matt! Your hand with scissors should stay far away from your sweet girl’s hair.
I love that you got her big girl bed with Liz’s parents. You’re very thoughtful and I’m sure that they love that about you.
Oh…and I saw the photo quilt that I made her in the stack of blankets in the photo. I hope that she loves it someday.
I love reading about your adventures Matt, and I said to myself while reading half way through “they are the coolest, hippest parents alive!”…..
I REALLY think your GF is so adorable pushing maddy in the stroller. What a hot little piece! I’m so so happy for you guys!
AND THAT DRESS on maddy? omg. can i have it in my size?!
(cant WAIT to read your book! I’m super excited about it!)
I always like how Brooke looks, the way she dresses
I like her style (pls tell her that… haha)… I want to be like her when I grow up.. LOL
Congrats to Maddy!
