***wednesday***

another night

of sleeping through

the night.

(at least for madeline).

it seems that

the one week

of waking up at

5:00 am, demanding

a bottle was a

bit of an anomaly.

lucky me.

we hung out

for the morning,

and madeline

got locked into

her little pink prison

as i did some

stuff around the house.

she’s learned a

new trick…

pulling on the

blue handle attached

to the mobile of

the bouncy chair

gets daddy’s attention.

why?

’cause it plays a

song that sounds

fine once, but

on repeated listens

it makes me wish

i were deaf.

even though i

hate the song,

i think it’s awesome

that she has

figured out how

to make the music play.

plus she seems

to love it.

i just wish i

could teach her to do

it on command.

we spent the afternoon

watching baseball

and catching up

on our sleep.

around 5:00

i decided to get

things set up

for madeline’s second

attempt at eating

solid foods.

this was no easy task.

i wanted to make

sure we utilized all

of the video cameras

in the house.

madeline waited patiently

while i positioned the

cameras around the kitchen.

i thought it

would be fun

to get all of

these different

camera angles and

edit them together

to make a rad video.

we spent the

rest of the evening

watching the debates

(republicans without a sense of humor may not want to watch this…remember! as aj and fog once said, we’re in this together…).

after the debate

we watched

some more baseball,

seeing the dodgers

take the first

game of the nlds

from that other

team from chicago.

we both went to

sleep early,

madeline before 9:00,

me before midnight.

today was great

because i only stepped

outside my house

long enough

to grab my mail.

relaxing is good for us.

***thursday***

madeline slept until 8:00.

i was not

so lucky.

we got ready and

went to the

montrose to meet

rhonda for breakfast.

we sat at the

tables on the sidewalk

and madeline caught

the attention

of every woman that

walked by.

i heard,

“ahhhh…she’s so cute”

at least 10 times

(what do people say to parents who have ugly babies?).

we had a nice

meal and conversation then i

thought that, since we

are in the neighborhood

we should

go visit the doctor

who delivered madeline

i called the office

and had to explain

the story to the

woman on the

other end of the phone.

(i’m sure she wondered why a guy was calling the ob/gyn office).

she got the doctor

on the phone and

she said it would

be great if we

stopped by.

said goodbye to

rhonda and drove up the

street to the office

where i spent

a lot of time with

liz.

my chest got

a little tight

as i took madeline

from the back seat,

but this is

something i’ve been

meaning to do

for awhile so

it’s time

to face it.

walked into the office,

remembered the way it smelled,

remembered sitting there

in the lobby with

liz,

remembered being excited

about each pregnancy milestone

we were about

to learn about.

i went up

to the counter and

the woman said,

“you must be matt”

i said,

“yes”

she then told me

that she had heard

our story and she

wanted to share

one of her own.

the father

of her child

died when

she was 7.5 months pregnant.

fuck.

not another one.

we talked for

a bit and i told her

about all the wonderful

support i’ve gotten

via the blog,

friends, and family.

i gave her my

info and told her

to contact me if

she needed anything.

then i went back

to see the dr.

it was so nice to

visit with her

and show off

my beautiful baby.

i also got to show

madeline off to

the nurses and

some of the doctors

who checked on

liz

while she was

on bedrest in

the hospital.

i promised to bring

madeline back often.

i left the office

and knew what

i had to do.

i drove straight to

the bank,

withdrew $1000

from the lglm5k fund,

drove back up

to the doctor’s office

and gave it to the

woman who

knows my pain all

too well.

she thanked me,

but i told her to

thank all of you.

to date i’ve received

$3688.87 in donations

(still waiting on a few checks to roll in…i’ll share the updated amount asap).

from friends, family and strangers

alike and i

can’t think

of a better way

to use it.

the rest will

be distributed soon,

all of it going to

people facing similar circumstances.

after the second visit

to the doctor’s office

we went home

and took naps

then spent the evening

watching the dodgers

come within

one game of the nlcs.

a difficult day

but one that led

me up the path to

feeling better about

my life.

people around the

world united in

remembering a woman

few of them ever knew.

she

would be so proud.

an amazing tribute

that, in some way,

helped ease the pain.

it was so nice meeting/seeing you.
